I was about to say the same thing LOL. I have always had faith in Darnold, but his career was rookie year, 2 years under Gase, traded to Panthers where he played 2 years, and then traded to 49ers to sit under Purdy. This is the first year he's actually had a chance to succeed and I love it.

This makes me think of a weird future where 15 years from now Lamar loses his mobilty to an Achilles tear and turns into a Drew Brees style quick release passer and wins CPotY and Josh Allen comes out of retirement to finally get the Bills a ring.
Allen didn’t break out until year 3 either. Playing quarterback in the nfl is not easy and teams are too quick to move on from a guy they thought had potential. Consistency in coaching is one of the most important factors in quarterback development.
McCarthy was never going to start for Vikings this season, they wanted to sit him a year, for Darnold sitting and learning San Francisco’s offense, learning how to put effort into the smallest of details helped him immensely. Vikings offense is very similar to 49ers. So it was a very nice transition. His arm, knowledge of the offense and having Justin Jefferson plus Brian Flores Defense… makes a very nice recipe.
But they’d have started him midseason very likely. With him out and Sam having low expectations they’ve already surpassed expectations more or less and could be a playoff contender. Kevin is a really good coach and get darrisaw in the pro bowl!
@@spidamitchell8311JJ wouldn't have been in at all with Darnold balling like this. JJ wasn't even a top 10 offensive player on that U of M squad, he was just there to make easy throws to a top receiver and give Corum a break.

Literally what I’m thinking with both Caleb Williams and Justin Fields. The Bears are literally throwing talent out the window with how they are handling their rookies given that Justin Fields is 3/3 with the Steelers when starting and Caleb Williams is literally looking like a bust.
@@hellowhirled you entirely missed the point of the comment. I was one of the hardest “Justin Fields is not a bust he is on a bad team” proponents. I was proven right immediately when he began starting for the Steelers and has gone 3/3 with very solid QB ratings. Similarly Caleb Williams is on a bad team and he is beginning to look like a bust because, again, he is on a bad team. Once he gets out of Chicago (inevitably will happen because the organization is a heaping pile of garbage) he will flourish and play well. If you would’ve put the context together with the video, you would’ve seen that what I was saying is that the 5 really bad teams in the NFL (Bears, Browns, Titans, Panthers, Raiders) have pretty horrendous organizations that do not allow players to grow and flourish. That’s why teams like the Eagles, the Chiefs, the Vikings, the Packers, etc can be expected to be good no matter their starters -because they are just run better.
I also think the 2020/21 college seasons may have been hard on QB prospects as the weird covid schedules hindered development. Plus defenses have caught back up to NFL offenses, so being a rookie QB is going to be hard again if you're not CJ Stroud.
@@griffin8er845 you're right, i did misread your comment. i think i agree with you, i just don't feel comfortable judging anything like this so early in CW's career. i WILL say that he should start painting his nails orange for games. maybe he'll play better. who knows.
I feel like part of it is that worst teams get to draft these high talented QBs without any structure thinking it will save the franchise, it kills the development of the player because they can’t get better when they are constantly being brought down by the lack of talent and coaching.
The most important aspect of making a great QB will always be the situation he's in. If a QB is drafted to a bad situation, 99.99% he will be a "bust".
I gained mad respect for Jameis after his 30 turnover season when he was very forthcoming about his issues and saying he needed to go to QB school and back up Drew Brees. I think Jameis is a genuine dude that needs a coach to believe in him
I’m so happy for Sam Darnold as a Jets fan and as a football fan in general. I’ve always been high on him since his USC days. It’s incredible to see how he’s been performing and how confident he is now. Same with Geno Smith these last couple seasons along with Justin Fields. These casual football fans say that coaching does not matter at all and after 2020, I would say it matters very much. Same with teambuilding because I look at Patrick Mahomes and I look at Joe Burrow, as well as Jalen hurts and Lamar Jackson. Guess what those guys have in common? An organization that knows how to develop players, sign players, draft players, and good coaching. The Jets have not have neither in the last decade, and as a matter of fact, I feel that the last two starting quarterbacks proceeded in error. Rogers did not have the talent that was needed to make the team better and the players. I remember Sam Darnold in his last season with the Jets and that team was so terrible. Anytime your weapons are Jamison Crowder, Breshard Perriman, Braxton Berrios, and Denzel Mims you’re not winning shit at all. That offensive line was absolutely fucking garbage and it’s a miracle we won any games at all that year. Now compare the 2020 Jets with the Chiefs and even the Colts, it’s like night and day.
As of the time of my comment, Allen already has 3 TD passes in the MNF game and they're destroying Jacksonville. This could be Allen's year. And Buffalo might really being an afterthought.
Great video! Whenever I see these QBs having a comeback moment or reviving their careers, I feel like the media and fans are just too quick to judge. Any QB needs proper time and development, after all.
Best one will ALWAYS be Jim Plunkett. If he had quit after being released by the 49ers, Plunkett would be a top 5 draft bust. Thankfully, he got his chance when the starter Dan Pastorini broke his leg in 1980. Gave him the chance to go out there and prove himself which he did. Won them the Super Bowl as a wildcard and then came off the bench again in 1983 and won his second Super Bowl. The sad thing he is the ONLY QB to NOT be in the hall of fame after winning 2 Super Bowls.
To be fair, he's one of the more incidental Super Bowl winning quarterbacks of all time. HOF quarterbacks should be real difference-makers, and I don't think simply not losing games for that defense and Marcus Allen is enough.
@@Kdizzzzz9999 I was talking about Plunkett, not Gannon (although I'm pretty sure Gannon never won the Super Bowl. He got there in '02 but lost to Tampa Bay.)
You’ve gotten the Vikings situation COMPLETELY wrong. Sam was brought in to be the starter, that’s why we paid him 10 million dollars. The plan was always to sit JJ McCarthy and give him a redshirt, JJ looked way better in camp than we thought he would but Sam was always named the starter. With JJ hurt though unfortunate, Sam doesn’t have pressure to perform though he’s doing great.
Same. Darnold had way too much pressure on him with the Jets, and it wasn't all his fault. Poorly constructed team, bad coaching and crap front office. Now he's grown, less pressure and more relaxed.
@@georgelucas2571 Ehh, the problem with the Falcons pick is the guy they picked more than anything. They picked the second oldest QB in the league. Had they picked up McCarthy I'd be more comfortable with the pick. Also the glaring holes on the defensive side, even if they were saved by a last minute free agent and a trade
As an eagles fan I still sometimes go back and watch highlights of that guy Carson Wentz and he could flat out make some impossible plays. Obviously, there were impossible plays he didn't make too which is is reputation but the guy played like he was fearless and like he was far more athletic than he really was. And now he's in Kansas City. One of if not the best coached team in my opinion. I hope this guy gets another chance he was just so much fun to watch.
Trey Lance comes to mind. Like Willis he didnt have a ton of experience in college, didnt play against a ton of FBS competition, but had lots of of raw talent. If he had a chance to sit and learn the same system for several years, he might turn into something. But Willis is a rare breed. In terms of athleticism and arm strength, hes on the level of a Michael Vick. Also had a 32 wonderlic score. He was just played way too soon, benched way too soon, and played for coaches who had little interest in developing and adapting to him. And that's foolish. If you judge a cheetah based on its ability to swim rather than its ability to do cheetah things, youll be disappointed with the results.
What u me a Willis didn’t face a ton of FBS talent? He went to Auburn for his first 2years and Liberty was in the FBS when he transfer over their in 19’
I don’t think they were ever “washed up” just seriously underdeveloped, most of these situations these guys were thrown to the wolves to save a team in a horrible situation

Justin Jefferson makes his teammates better. He's wide open for Darnold every play, or he's taking 11 guys with him and getting Josh Oliver or Jalen Nailor open.
Maybe a blessing in disguise for McCarthy because he will not be rushed into the league and get destroyed. Many of the current top QBs were sitting behind a veteran for a few seasons before they get their starting jobs. It is very rare to have a QB ready to hit the field right away so you can hope that McCarthy can learn a few things behind Darnold.
Great work, as always. Earlier, this month was the 30th anniversary of one of the most hyped and anticipated regular sesson games in NFL history. Week 2 1994 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. 49ers at Chiefs. Student vs. Teacher. Young vs. Montana. It's not the greatest game ever by any means, but how we got there is the real story.
Geno has become one of my favorite players in the League, he has something like 10 game-winning drives in the last two years. Truly one of the most clutch qbs out there.
Sam Darnold was always going to be the starter come Week 1, but hopes were high for JJ Mccarthy to replace him once he was ready. Then he got injured, which pretty much cemented Darnold as starting QB for the entire season.
Brady, Mahomes, and Rodgers all sat at least their rookie seasons. Very few QBs can start straight from college and usually those that do are physically gifted.
@@ColtonWhite-p3k yes and no, Bledsoe did get injured but if Brady wasn't playing well and losing games, best believe he would've been benched but he didn't and now the rest is history
Sam Darnold will be resigned to a similar deal with maybe like 25-30 mil instead of the 10 mil, and he’ll be the backup to JJ. I can tell you right now with 100% certainty that the only way Sam is our starter in 2025 is if he wins the super bowl with the vikings. You don’t take a guy like JJ in the first round, never give him a chance, and then ship him one year after he got drafted. that would be the worst possible decision
I wanna note, the most common factor for these guys is moving from a mediocre team to a decent team, and then getting the opportunity to re examine their game from the bench leading to them making the most of their opportunities.
It's always amazing to me how franchises miss the fact that good coaching and a good line can make the difference between a bust and a successfully developing QB. Players running for their lives will never be able to learn
After Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco, I thought teams would have learned: you have to get at least some type of team around the QB first, not the other way around. If you do that, even Tim Tebow can have a good season.
The way the Falcons brought up Ryan needs to be taught in coaching classes. Ooo look a shiny new 1st round QB. RUN THE FUCKING BALL! He shouldn't be throwing 30+ times a game.
Unless you draft CJ Stroud, lol. Every team seems to bank on drafting the best rookie of all time and throw everyone under the bus when they aren't correct rather than just drafting a guy, letting him sit through another mediocre year before drafting him more weapons and having a fully ready sophomore QB and a real team
Been very pleasantly surprised by Malik Willis the past couple of weeks. He's not asked to be a hero but he has simply got it done. I was really happy for him to get to go into Nashville and beat the Titans like that while mayonnaise man continues throwing touchdowns to the other team. Go Pack Go!
OMG. A QB GOES TO A GOOD ORGANIZATION WITH A COMPETENT ROSTER AND HAS SUCCESS? WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT? I THOUGHT THEY WOULD BE THE NEXT ELWAY, BRADY, AND MANNING WHEN HE WAS DRAFTED
Darnold couldn't show anything with the Panthers because they had a desperate offensive line, injuries to the one or two catchers who were able to catch the ball, and even those were out due to injuries. He just wasn't lucky with the Panthers team. With the Vikings, it's a completely different cadre of catchers and runners.
Mayfield and Darnold are showcases on how, sometimes, its the ORGANIZATION that's the problem. No matter how much talent you try to accrue and try to "build" around them, if your organization is as bad as cleveland or carolina then its just all going to go downhill eventually. So happy to see Baker doing well, guy deserves it after being trashed out by Cleveland like that. Also good to see Darnold thriving too.
The Darnold/McCarthy situation could play out just like Flacco with the Browns last year and them deciding to stick with Watson this year. Flacco is way older than Darnold though but if Darnold keeps this up all season I think you give Darnold at least one more year and JJ can develop more especially after being injured in his first full season.
Darnold may not be the next best thing in football, but as a Texans fan he hurt my soul yesterday lol and he’s got those Vikings looking pretty good this year. Kind of excited to see how they keep looking now

The thing with the Darnold situation is that Sam Darnold was always going to start before JJ McCarthy. If the season was doing bad then JJ would come in at like game 8. If you followed the Vikings training camp, JJ was creeping up to Darnold. JJ is the real deal too, and way way cheaper than Darnold. If JJ can play 80% like Darnold so far, that's a win.
Mayfield took the Browns to the playoffs. He was never a bust, the Browns just decided to play him while he was injured, as poverty franchises tend to do.
Most Quarterbacks are only as good as the team around them. Steve Young is a great example of this. He took over the reigns at age 30 and became a recurring ProBowler, won a Superbowl, and a couple of MVP awards.
Lifelong Browns fan here. I defended Baker longer than any of my diehard Browns fan buddies but I had to accept the reality that he wasn’t the fit for the Browns anymore My theory is that Baker was NOT one of the boys. It seemed like he was insistent on being a lone wolf at QB and outsider with a chip on his shoulder when he had 4 years to develop the needed camaraderie with the core of the team. I hope he continues to do well but dammit I wish things would have gone better with him
That was a great hot take on Winston being good bc he’s been exceptional for the browns lately even tho I’m not a browns fan the future looks good for u guys with Winston
The reason why many of these Qb's are going better is the fact that they got an owner who knows how to run a football team so brings in coaches who know what there doing.
80% the coaches, 20% the player as far as I've ever seen. Teams only rebound from bad qb stretches when they liquidate the staff, then 'somehow' their qb woes are shortly thereafter solved.
I didn’t believe in Darnold like Cowherd did but I always wanted to see him succeed. Just when I would’ve assumed he’d be out of the league, I get the pleasant surprise of watching him play.
There are so many quarterbacks that are wasted because they are immediately expected to perform as a top 10 player in the league. There’s a reason the packers have had 3 great quarterbacks in a row, they help guys develop before giving expectations
Ok, if Sam Darnold plays like this the whole season he’s most likely going to win MVP or atleast be like 2nd or 3rd in the voting. A smart team would NEVER let someone like that go for an unproven rookie. If he does it, it’s time to look for possible trade candidates for JJ
I feel like people forget that some QBs are very streaky, and especially when it's at the start of a season, it can cause people to forget how bad they are when they're bad. No doubt people will eventually be reminded when Darnold goes on a 4 game skid where he averages 160 yds a game has 2 total Tds and 6-7 picks. Baker is a different story. He's always been a workhorse and a talented QB. He's not elite by any stretch , but he belongs as a starter in the NFL for sure. Ntm that Cleveland makes just about everyone look bad. Geno seems like a guy who actually figured some stuff out. Sure the Jets weren't great when he was there and he has a way better coach in Seattle, but he definitely worked on his flaws and Is a top 10 QB now.
Every one of these teams has a great HC. Darnold with KOC behind him (and Jefferson to aim for) is a match made in heaven. I like the look of McCarthy but I hope we extend Sam if he keeps this up
darnold was never gonna be the backup. the plan was have mccarthy sit until they are certain he was ready and while mccarthy watches darnold was gonna play.
Nick Foles had the greatest comeback story everrrr…not cause I’m birds fan 🦅 but anyone of these dudes can make a Cinderella story come true. It happened to Stratford for the Rams
As a wvu fan I've never written off geno after seeing how great of an arm he had in college the only way he'd fail in the nfl is if he got behind a terrible o-line/bad coaching staff which he did at the jets but he found his footing in Seattle. Same with Mayfield idk why the browns ever got rid of him
The problem with "washed up" quarterbacks is that they're usually put into a situation where success is highly unlikely. It is foolish for a franchise to draft a young QB in the first round and not have any parts to ensure he has the best path to success. IMO, it's more important to draft an elite LT/Rt or a Center first and a prospect QB in the next year. I think a lot of the success of young QBs comes from the ability to read the game from the sidelines their first year and to maximize their amount of reps in practice. This way they can see the speed of the game and can preserve their health and confidence a bit easier. Patrick Mahomes is the classic case of this in recent memory.
Exactly! If a franchise is in a dumpster fire situation, work on the offensive line first. You'll get a high draft pick because you're a dumpster fire. Draft a good offensive linemen with it and maybe another in a later round. Yes, the team will still stink in year 1 as it'll probably be working with a bridge quarterback, but it'll be able to pick high in the draft again next year in year 2. Then draft the prospective franchise quarterback and have him sit at least the first few games, maybe half his first year. It takes at least two years to get out of a dumpster fire situation. Teams keep putting the cart before the horse and simply drafting a QB thinking all will be well. Without a good offensive line, the run game is not as good as lanes aren't created, and quarterbacks have less time to pass. I am a Bears fan, so I have seen it happen for far too long and it is very frustrating. Trubisky wasn't that bad. Fields wasn't that bad as is evidenced by his first 3 performances with Pittsburgh as this video points out. It's just that they were thrown to the wolves too soon and with subpar offensive lines. I currently see a similar thing happening to Caleb Williams, although it has only been 3 games.
@@coinbuyer-8605 I feel you are gonna be right about Caleb's time in Chicago. I never understood why young QBs got so much scrutiny when there is only so much they can do at the beginning of their careers. People will put their loss to the Texans on him, but he virtually got ZERO protection and was hit seemingly more than he snapped the ball. My favorite example of what we have been discussing in terms of the importance of an O-line is the Rams "Greatest Show on Turf." While many people look at the extremely prolific offense of Bruce, Faulk, Holt, Hakim and Proehl, not to mention the emergence of Kurt Warner seemingly out of nowhere. It actually was built through Orlando Pace during the 1997 draft. It was that key piece that allowed the offense to be arguably the greatest ever because it allowed all Warner to find his targets with great efficiency.
While he wasn't able to get a win in Tennessee, I was happy to see Ryan Tannehill doing well there after his time in Miami. It wasn't a major game changer to my knowledge but he seemed more comfortable there and I was really rooting for them to win it all when they had their playoff run. Because of that, I've been focusing more on redemption stories like Baker's after leaving Cleveland, and seeing Sam off to a great start. Personally, if any player can't seem to get it together on one team I will always root for them to put it together on another or at least under a different system.
It’s a simple reason as to why these guys aren’t doing good right off the hop. A lot of these guys were starters right from the get go. No time to actually learn the game at the NFL level. All of the greats sat behind someone their rookie year, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Steve young etc. As a Vikings fan, sign Darnold to a 2 year deal, allow J.J. To learn a little bit longer. Sam could just be having a Keenum kind of year. Caleb Williams will probably be the next one to add to this list.

I feel like part of it is that worst teams get to draft these high talented QBs without any structure thinking it will save the franchise, it kills the development of the player because they can’t get better when they are constantly being brought down by the lack of talent and coaching.
We need to change how the entire draft works tbqh.

My favorite will always be rich Gannon reviving his career winning an mvp and Super Bowl at like 37 years old
To be fair, he's one of the more incidental Super Bowl winning quarterbacks of all time. HOF quarterbacks should be real difference-makers, and I don't think simply not losing games for that defense and Marcus Allen is enough.

Sam Darnold wasn’t made the starter with McCarthys injury. He was always going to be the week 1 starter.
Glad to say I was never a Darnold doubter.
