We stayed four days in Takayama last week and felt like we should have stayed five days. 😊 We strolled for a day. Tried hida beef & local foods. 😋Visited Hida Folk Village at night. Went to Honoki Ski resort for a day, went to Shirakawago & Ainokura for a day and the following day went to Takayama Souvenir Shop before leaving Takayama. Loving the apple chou and apple biscuit the one with the diamond taste award. If only we could spare for just another day to stroll Takayama again... Takayama has so much to offer especially for nature lovers like us. My husband and I fell in love with Takayama, we watched your videos since last year and your Takayama videos were the ones that paved our way to visit there. Thank you for all your tips. ❤️
We visited Takayama at least 6x before Covid. It was most enjoyable before the place became overly touristic as we noticed a drop in quality of simple items like wasabi soft serve etc. Our regular ryokan on a hill Takayama Kanko hotel has since closed and been bought over. I think they demolished the whole place. Lovely memories during our winter and autumn visits. We were able to see the Koi in Hida Takayama city and also Hida Folk Village in winter. Perhaps the next time if we do return, we should try your Air B&B. So sad that Hyperdia has stopped its helpful english online service for trains. Thankfully we still have Jorudan.
Takayama for four nights, April 2025! Thank you for inspiring viewers like me to plan a stunning, more rural experience in Japan. (We visited the amazing and famous big cities of Japan over three weeks in June 2019.)
Thank you for this take on Takayama. I was given a couple of projects by Gifu Prefectural Tourism Bureau to explore Takayama and wanted to see what kind of content exists before making one of their official guides. I draw inspiration from talented creators and good pieces of material such as this. You're awesome. Keep doing you!
i have plan to visit takayama at december just 1 night...but your video made me change my whole itinerary and plan to stay for 3 nights...love this video...please make video that explore hakone and fuji five lakes...thanks alot
Great video, I was planning on squeezing in 2 days in Takayama based on guides and reports but I may extend to 3 now. Planning on heading there straight from Tokyo. Appreciating the suggestions left by some of the commentators as well. Just hope I can find last minute place to stay. I'll be there in time for the Autumn festival.
Another great video. Thank you Yusuke San. Takayama is indeed a beautiful city, but in winter it is absolutely magical. As for the food, Hida beef and the ramen is great, but an unexpected surprise is Centre4 hamburgers. A unique restaurant and the best burger I've ever had in my life. Definitely a must visit.
I love Takayama. On every Japan holiday so far we've visited and stayed in a different ryokan each time. It's pretty in Spring and Autumn, but it's magical in winter under a blanket of snow. I'd love to see a Centre4 video from you. Get the Hida Beef burger. It's amazing.
Are there any places that sells food at night? I'm a night owl, I have a habit of eating late at night, and i the restaurant closes early at takayama. This makes me a bit hesitant to visit, are there any minimart at takayama?
Great video. Is Takayama really worth visiting at the beginning of December long after the Fall foliage is over, and before snow season? Is it the same for Shirakawago?
I have to say that the Takayama loses its charm a little bit in the early December after the fall foliage and before the snow season. Shirakawago on the other hand is always enjoyable. Though please note that it may already be snow in the early December. Hope this helps!
Great to know. Thank you. I’m trying to Figure out where else besides Kyoto, Nara, Tokyo, Hiroshima and Osaka in the winter. I’ve been to all of those places already
HIDA BEEF! Just my opinion bit for me its the best beef among all the wagyu. Even better than Kobe and Matsusaka for me... Its quite expensive but its a must must try!
Excellent video! I wasn't too sure about my 2 days in Takayama coming up in March, but after watching this video, I am positive it will be great! If I try to increase my stay to 3 days instead of 2 days in Takayama, then it might be at the expense of visiting Kanazawa. What do you think about that? Should I forgo visiting Kanazawa all together or should I just decrease my stays in Kyoto or other cities instead? Thank you for your help!
Thanks for your comment! Since you are coming to Takayama, the blog below may be helpful too :) japanestay.com/10-things-to-do-in-takayama Regarding Kanazawa, It is a nice city too. If you can fit it into your itinerary, I think you will enjoy there too. But all the cities in Japan are nice. I am sure you will enjoy your experience however you make your itinerary :)
Awesome video!!! Thank you for explaining Takayama. I'm planning to visit there in February and this video is a great reference. I have question though. Is it possible to make a day trip from tokyo-takayama-shirakawago?
Thanks for your comment! Regarding your question, I think you would not have time to see both Takayama and Shirakawago on one day. I would recommend staying in Takayama at least for a day :)
No, I’m current visiting Takayama today, it takes a lot of time to sight see, plus shirakawago is quite a town to walk thru, it snowed all day , very difficult to walk
Your video's very helpful. Thanks a lot. Can I ask you a question? When does the morning market start in winter? Your answer would be very helpful to me!
Hi, we are planning to hire a car from Kanazawa, so wondered what the road conditions will be in late March? Will it be icy? My journey is from Kanazawa, to Takayama (via Shirakawago), and back. I might also stop by Gero, Shinhotaka and kamikochi, depending on the road conditions. Please advise.
This is really helpful and thanks for your great video Mr. Yusuke, I’ll travel to Takayama and Shirakawago in March, I’ll stay in Takayama for 3 days 2 nights, may I know more detail on how to travel from Nagoya - Takayama - Shirakawago - Takayama, then travel to Osaka afterward? Or should I just back to Nagoya first then to Osaka? Thanks!
Hi! Thanks for your video. How should I arrange my itinerary if I wanna go Gero Onsen, Shirakwago, Takayama, Alpine Route & Kanazawa? I'm coming from Tokyo but leaving from Osaka.
Thank You very much for this video. Which is more scenic to travle, by Hida Express or Nohi Train from Nagoya to Takayama? Where can I check the Nohi bus fare?
As much as I like Takayama, it is probably too much for tourism purpose. If you come by car, maybe you can enjoy full 5-6 days with hidden gems that only locals know.
I am visiting Takayama in mid november and like to visit the onsens. Please advise how to get there and which onsen to try as I have only 2 days in Takayama. Thanks.

This awesome video is making me really consider swinging by Takayama instead of Nara/Nagoya the first week of April! Think it's a good time to go there? I dropped you a message/questions in your japanesquest Contact Us form but it kept spinning. Not sure if you got it?
Hi, sorry for the late reply! Hmm, I haven't received any message from the Contact page. Sorry, I will look into it. Thanks! To answer your question, I personally think Takayama is way better than Nagoya. In my opinion, there is not much to see in Nagoya. Nara, on the other hand, is a great place to explore. Since you are coming in the first week of April, I would say Nara is slightly better since it is a great period for cherry blossoms. In Takayama, cherry blossoms season is usually in the middle of April. But all in all, both are great places, and I am sure you will enjoy your time whichever you visit!
