We once had a stray, half grown black female show up in our patio. She was in her 1st heat, being bullied by massive Siamese mix brothers and our neutered male, Max, decided to protect her from the bullies. She would not be tamed but Max was her hero, so she stayed. Then the bullies finally impregnated her. While pregnant, she finally tamed to our care. We gave the kittens away and kept one who was black like the Momma. At the time the kittens were big enough to give away a neighbor brought us a gray one about a week older. We kept her, too. When they were just 7 mths old, they both got pregnant. These mommies were great friends. Their kittens were born 3 days apart. We kept them in separate boxes. One day, the gray cat went on an excursion and left her babies in their box. A bit later, the black cat decided to leave hers while they napped. Soon the gray cat came back to the sound of mewing kittens. However, the ones crying were the black cat's kittens. Since hers were quiet, she decided to attend to and feed the black cat's babies. Just then, here comes black cat and hears mewing. Looks in her box to be surprised by gray cat feeding HER babies. I waited to see fur fly but it did not happen. Just then, gray cat's babies began to mew so black cat simply jumped into gray cat's box to take care of her babies in turn! They shared their Mom duties for the next 3 days. At that time, I moved them into one BIG box and everyone was one big happy family. After the babies weaned the Mommies were neutered. Sigh. No more babies but 2 sweet cats had each other.

Usually, when the birthing starts, Momma looks for a hiding place that comforts HER. Once the babues are born, she may notice it isn't exactly a safe place for her babies and she then will move them to a safer place. I have had cats give birth under my bed directly on carpet, in a closet in a basket of clean clothes, in a garage in a box of old rags and in the special box I made for her. You just never know. Many times they will sneak outside thinking they can hide better out there, particularly if you are keeping too close of a watch on them. It is always best to follow at as far a distance as you can when trying to watch where they are moving their babies to. They don't always pick the safest places.

I ended up doing a milk replacement for the kitten, she didn't seem to have a drive to live but I never gave up! However, that being said I took the kitten under my wing and she's my baby now! She's doing good. The thing I have to remember is that feral cats live by survival and the weak are discarded so mama doesn't get attached. The baby is left to die alone. It is so sad. I have 2 of the 3 babies. Mama and 1 kitten were adopted out.

I missed her very badly..when she fell from 10th floor n died.then I got a new born Heidi. just 3 months gave birth to 4 kittens..had to give them for fear of falling. But my kitty was very intelligent..she was my companion, during my lonliness..I still cant forget her for her many activities n playful nature, well trained..wont find another substitute.
