    Just a little note for edumacation:
    The pocket on the back of the Beaufort is a leakproof game bag meant for holding things like birds. This is also why the cuffs are different than the Bedale. The wool style would get pretty nasty and cold if you were picking up birds you'd just shot and got blood on you. You can just rinse these cuffs off and they'll be fine. But it'd be much more difficult with the Bedale.

    The word is BEdale, not beDALE. Emphasis on the FIRST syllable. Bedale is a small town in Yorkshire, England. 4:01 It's called a poacher's pocket. Traditionally used for carrying small game, such as rabbits, and upland game birds. The front lower pockets are shaped as they are to hold shotgun shells.

    Olaf can I please ask, why Americans give weight of one self when wanting to know the size & fit of a jacket?
    Surely height & chest is all you need.

    • @olaf2046
      @olaf2046  8 лет назад +4

      26FHM height and chest are two dimensions of measure. Having the weight gives a third and more detailed description of build. For example two guys both weight 200 lbs but the first man is 5'2" tall and the second man is 6'9" tall. The short guy has a 46 inch chest but the taller guy has a 36 inch chest. On the flip side you can have two guys with different weights but have the same chest width and and height. Have the three details lends a bit more information for the fit and tailoring.

    Please help. I received my first beaufort, I have a bedale already but wanted a larger winter coat. So i first got a medium 38 and it was very stylish fit and fit peeeerfect but it just wasnt what I wanted it for, my bedale fit is stylish and I wanted a winter coat so i went up to a medium 40 and it is not as much of a stylish fit but functionally it is perfect and not too big. I noticed behind the shoulders the jacket sticks up alot (along the shoulder stitching) is this common or is my jacket too big? It looks like ai have giant shoulder blades haha but will this die down the more I wear it and the jacket relaxes a bit? Driving me mad! 38 or a 40!? Ive never had a jacket that has such a difference in just 2 inches.

    • @olaf2046
      @olaf2046  3 года назад

      The Bedale and the Beaufort has sloped shoulders when it fits. The Ashby and Bristol have boxy shoulders. I would size down to a 38 Bedale. Also the Beaufort, with its open cuffs, is more of a layer friendly jacket but the Bedale with its elasticated knit cuffs and shorter fit is not the best for tucking in layers underneath.

    thanks for helping me choose
    From what I can gather the Bedale is a beaufort minus the game pocket at the rear, that only really will be used by game hunters. They are really high quality well made garments, and feels like it will last years

    6'1 here and just returned the Bedale. You are 100% correct, they are not for tall people. Just ordered a Beaufort. I have long arms and the Beaufort has slightly longer sleeves by about 0.5 inches. That should be just about my bare minimum. I also hope it will cover a suit jacket. If not, I'll go for the Border.

      @@olaf2046 38L. Sometimes 40. I've tried on Beauforts in 42-46. The 42 looked the best of them naturally, but they didn't have 38 or 40. I'll order a 38 or 40 and send one back. Now I'm debating between olive and green.

    • @trevbarlow9719
      @trevbarlow9719 4 года назад

      Well, I received a 38 and 40 Beaufort last week. The 38 fit was spot-on, but the sleeves were crazy short by about 3 inches. The 40 had a baggier fit (still good) and longer sleeves, but still too short. Sent them both back.
      Now my dilemma: Border or Bristol.
      Bristol, pros: perfect fit, I've tried it on. Feels like Barbour made a Beaufort just for me. Con: made outside of the UK.
      Border, pros: made in England, is just about the most classic of the jackets in terms of length and cut, could comfortably fit a jacket underneath. Cons: not available in stores to try it on, presumably less refined cut compared to Bristol. I'd have to pay shipping costs just to try it on.
      If the Bristol were made in England, I'd get it in a second. Do you have any knowledge of any differences in quality between the wax jackets made in England vs. abroad?
      EDIT: just realized you did a video addressing the difference between lifestyle and classic. You even mentioned why you didn't by the Bristol.

    Trying to figure out the difference between the Bedale and the Asby jacketS?

    • @olaf2046
      @olaf2046  6 лет назад +5

      The Bristol and Ashby are the Lifestyle Collection versions of the Classic Collection Beaufort and Bedale jackets To understand the main differences between the jackets you have to understand the differences between the Lifestyle and Classic Wax Collection.
      Lifestyle Jackets tend to be more expensive, slimmer cut, letter sized (…S, M , L…), practical features are sacrificed for stylistic features, they are seasonally sold (or sold out rather) and tend to be Made outside the UK.
      Classic Collection Jackets tend to be cheaper , broader cut, numerically sized (…97cm/c38, 102cm/c40…), have more practical features, can be purchased anytime of the year and, for now, MADE IN ENGLAND. The Bristol and Ashby have a strong appeal to younger trendy buyers who tend to want a good looking jacket for urban living. The biggest practical features I miss on Ashby and Bristol jackets are the articulated sleeves that make the Bedale and Beaufort more comfortable to wear.
      All four jackets are 6 ounce medium weight wax cotton, have two way zips and have about the same amount of pockets. Ashby is 30 to 31.5 inches, slimmer and longer cut than Bedale which is 28 to 32 inches. Ashby lacks the Sleeve Articulation, lacks true raglan sleeves because of the extra seam on top of the shoulder , lacks a storm cuff, and lacks true riding flaps. The Ashby’s rear vent flaps are mere decorations on the Ashby and quite silly to have on a jacket that is relatively long. The Bristol at 32.5 to 34 inches long was for me too impractical to purchase. To make it the slim and sexy modernized Beaufort, the Bristol lacks the big rear game pockets, lacks articulated sleeves, lacks a proper neck gaiter, lacks sleeve gaiters, and lacks true raglan sleeves. I also found the corduroy collar to be quite floppy and cheaply made compared to the Beaufort.
      This is in no way saying the Ashby and Bristol are bad jackets over all. If you only want a cool jacket to wear for a year or two and high cost and low design-quality are no issue for you then these are your jackets. If you want practical features, high design-quality but don’t mind a broadly cut jacket that you will want to keep and wear for decades then the Bedale/Beauforts are for you.

      Thank you for the time and effort to share your knowledge. I look to your reviews quite often and thankfully I did because I posted this question months ago and you replied and because I just came back from my local brick and mortar Barbour retailer (quite a ways away from me I might add) shop and didn't have any sales associate with even a fraction of the practical knowledge you just shared I decided to check back. This is very helpful, I did not walk out with the Bedale, as intended but know I a bit more practical upfront knowledge to chew on before I "pull the trigger" and make the purchase, tentatively. Although reading an other review on your channel apparently there is a company by the name of Belfast that I may need to check out -- but I honestly don't know the history of the firm, and I'm fairly set on a Barbor jacket. Again thanks the excellent replay. I do appreciate your time.

      you kinda know what to expect with waxed jackets as opposed to jackets that have waterproof layers. wax jackets are great for dampness, wind, drizzle, SHORT downpours. if you have it properly waxed, it should work pretty well, but it's not a straight up rain jacket. wear some merino layers underneath if you're being active outdoors; you might get damp, but you'll be safe & warm. or get a waterproof breathable liner jacket, which are usually uncommon if you're looking for the fashion aspect.
      you just have to have a quiver of coats - with clothing, you can never really have your cake & eat it too. it's either fashionable that can be work in london & nyc, or you can find something that's crossover that's "good enough" in both the style & functionality category, or if you're gonna be outside in the elements, you're gonna look a little more sporty like arc'teryx or patagonia.
      or get an umbrella! they're so underrated.

Country Attire and many UK sites still have the best prices but all no longer ship Barbour products to the USA and The End prices for Barbour Jackets have quadrupled since December 1st, 2016. How are you suppose to clean the jacket if you can't wash it in the washing machine? I mean even in winter months you will sweat, release body oil and body odor.

    • @olaf2046
      @olaf2046  7 лет назад +3

      The jackets themselves are very breathable and in a weird way self cleaning if you turn it inside out and hang it under the sun with the lining exposed for a few hours. At least once in ever three to five years (depending on your usage) I would send the jacket out to get rewaxed and cleaned at your local Barbour site cleaning and rewaxing costs less than $50 USD with shipping included AND you get a brand new jacket back in the mail when the work is done. Barbour will also repair tears ($15), worn out buttons ($5) and zippers ($10) for a fraction of the cost of a new jacket.

    • @jtcber
      @jtcber 7 лет назад

      I have thought of sunning the jacket in the summer months when I am not wearing it. I only worry the extreme heat will melt and dry the wax more quickly even if you turn it inside out and decrease its waterproofness when I need it in the winter months.

    • @olaf2046
      @olaf2046  7 лет назад +1

      Just one day is all it needs. Do it on a sunny day and not a necessarily hot day. Like a sunny bright 70 to 80 degree Spring/Early Summer day is best. Only one day is all you need then hang it back up in the closet for the remainder of the summer. Also if you find the jacket is smelly the hit it with a few squirts of Febreeze and slightly saturate the lining (not the wax side) and it will clean it up nicely.
