- Video Report: At Sea Aboard French Navy Air Defense Destroyer Chevalier Paul.
The Horizon-class destroyers (classified as frigates in the French Navy) are multi-role surface combatants specialized in air defence. There are two vessels of this class in the French Navy, Forbin and Chevalier Paul both built by French shipyard DCNS (the vessels were launched in March 2005 and July 2006 respectively, and commissioned in 2008 and 2009).

I wish Hellenic Navy had such a nice ship. Thanks a lot French Navy. Happy New Year
If only friend...
don't worry if someone touch Greece we will fuck him up

Great video...a beautiful ship...impressive interview especially the fluency of English.
Gratz to the French. Beautiful ship! Love it when our boats work together.
Très intéressant..! Et très beau bateau..!
Thanks Xav ;-)
Really great video video thanks.. I really laughed when the French captain said wafer 03:34 , its pathetic of me but it held a small amount of comedy value that made me chuckle.
I guess he wanted to say "warfare" ! As we say in French : he's "Speaking Yogurt" ! At least, he didn't make grammar mistakes.
Who cares ? English is just a world work tool now : everybody uses it, but nobody speaks it !
can you speak French? not because it's too hard for English peaple ,so don't be critic!
@@ShinoxSturmreiterDesTode French, Spanish, Catala and English. Chill out not intended as a criticism.
I hope i can them soon
Wow our guys are using english now...that's a major evolution for the French Navy ;)
for OTAN !! OK ?
@@user-ww7wz2gs4s NATO in English 🤣
Sympa et en version française ?
Hello from Brasil, please answer me about the Horizon Class, is Frigate or Destroyer, tks and congratulations, greetings for all.
Hi, in France they don't call destroyer as international say but Frigate DXXX (D for destroyer rang) or Frigate FXXX (F for frigate rang). So the equivalent is destroyer but in France destroyer class doesn't exist anymore.
FREGATE = DESTROYER !! FREGATE in French and DESTROYER in English !!
Nope, not all french frigate are destroyer only french frigate with the nato code beginning with the letter D. Endeed "Destroyer" is an english word that why they don't call the frigate Chevalier Paul (plate D621) as an destroyer but in NATO code it's like a destroyer rang. All coutries in NATO have to use the same designation model so the french choose to call their heavy frigate as destroyer. The french navy used to call them destroyer(or anti-torpedo) when they bought american ships (between 1943 and 1967).
It's a destroyer ,but they class all their escort ships as frigates
It’s officially a frigate but international navy would call it a destroyer
amazing , morocco should buy horizon-class or fremm freda frigate .
We will trade it for haschiesh!
FREMM is better ! multi role frigate !! horizon class is AA defense !!
We should buy zebi no?
Beautiful ship, but why so little of them in the Marine? And why is there no CIWS against antiship missiles (Goalkeeper/Phalanx/Mantis or RAM) and the likes to be seen?
There is some ciws missiles...see properly in the starting of the video.
That's because all the Project Horizon partner nations cut their orders in half, probably due to the high costs involved.Even the RN cut their Type 45 buy from 12 to 6.Each Navy has its own Weapons fit which negates the need to fit a dedicated CIWS,the RN being the exception with two x Phalanx mounts.
See the pair of 76mm OTO Melara guns on the front? They're state of the art and can fire multi-fused, guided AA shells. Watch a RUclips video on them; don't need Phalanx, as this is doing the same job-but is more modern.
Mostly because FREEM can do 80% of what Horizon can do and is much cheaper, plus Horizon replacement is already being planned with a Displacement of 10.000 tonnes
French didnt have the "faith" in canon CIWS like the Phalanx, even if the RAPIDFIRE now exist and the 76 have a antimissile set, it's not his main role.
So we use mainly the Mistral small range missile against Missile Threat and high efficacity decoy (IR/EM)
I dont say it's a good thing...
10:11 lol it has Horn
48 lanceurs verticaux (ASTER 15/30 + MdCN) + 2x 9 lanceurs latéraux (exocet) + 2 canons et mitrailleuses + 1 lance torpilles + un Caïman ? Putain ça rigole plus là!
Finally, a Frenchman speaks some other language then French :)
Horizon class ....is good for indonesia navy .
the FREMM is better !!
Its a frigate or destroyer????
Well it's both, destroyer is how they are called in most navies but the French navy call them frigates, different names but same job.
Wait, what? In the intro the announcer clearly states that, at 7000 tons, this ship the the largest surface combatant in the French Navy. Shortly thereafter it is shown escorting the nuclear aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, which has a displacement in excess of 42,000 tons. Are we to assume that the carrier is NOT a surface combatant? How do the French define this?
This is a little language ambiguity, yes a carrier is commonly classified as a surface combattant, but....
What the announcer wanted to say is that the primary role of a carrier is to
carry a fleet of planes or helicopters. Basically the role of a carrier is not to attack plane or other ships, but yes it will defend itself against such threats with a lot of missile, but this is not the primary role of a carrier.
Frigates are more specifically designed to attack other vessels, planes, in this meaning 1st rank Frigate (if we use the NATO terminology) is "per se" a combattant ship.
The "combattant" role of what you call "carrier" is specfically held by the on-board fleet of planes.
There is just two way to understand the term "carrier"
- you can first understand it as "global" so including the fleet of plane, so it is a combattant.
- you can also understand it more strictly as only a carrier, in this case this is not specifically a combattant. Only the "context" can give element on what meaning should be.
Just note that you could perfectly use a Carrier to carry civilian helicopters for example in an humanitarian scenario, or use a Carrier to carry all other kind of thing, so a carrier itself isn't "per se" a combattant vessel...
"Groupe aéronaval" is the equivalent of CVBG (Carrier Vessel Battle Group), so it includes Carrier, planes, escort (frigates, submarines....)
The fact remains a carrier is a surface ship, and with the use of its aircraft is one that can perform every task this frigate can, and can do these with greater power and at a greater distance too. Were the opposite true their roles would be reversed, and the carrier would be deployed to protect the frigate.
That said, neither is the most powerful ship in the French Navy. This is the four Triomphant nuclear ballistic submarines . . . which are NOT surface ships, of course.
the CdG isn't supposed to go in the front lines the plans it carries will.
differences between French and nato names
With women on board , i doubt there is any real discipline on board the destroyer
Surface combatants include cruisers, destroyers, frigates, and corvettes, and several older types including battleships and battlecruisers.
The category does not include aircraft carriers, amphibious assault ships, and mine hunters, as these generally do not use on-board weapons. Aircrafts are not defined as on-board weapons.
Damn. Maybe a better all-rounder than the Type 45... :S
I think they're looking at the Lockheed anti ship missile.
beside it's an anti air defence destroyer with 48 aster long range SAM... there is also 8 exocet antiship missile, 8 sadral launcher short range sam and 2 torpedo launcher .. EXOCET you know the one that sink HMS shefield during falkland war... so they don't give a fuck of loockeed anti ship missile....
well so far our type 45 having hard time just staying at sea.
Type 45 is better at air Defense

Frigate horizon class very good. Bangladesh going to make 6-8 frigate by Chinese Technology transfer.

I’d still rather have a Type 45. SAMPSON is a much better radar
Pack some roast beef into a French baguette and you have quite the fighting force, but who are we fighting anyway 😕

Forbin and Chavalier Paul are the 2 French Ships
Andrea Doria and Caio Duilio are the 2 Italian Ships
All are DESTROYERS, named Frigates for pollitical reasons, our people is stupid and don't like much strong armies. (I say to hell with that !!)
I would love there were 8 of these ships, 4 for each country, instead of 4.
It's not really a political reason, it's more traditionnal.
In all case, their NATO code are D for destroyer.
MERDE ALORS !
post COVID-19 the MARINE Nationale needs atleast 2 large 63,000 ton - 90,000 ton stealth (CATOBAR) aircraft carrier with stealth features that will reduce it's RCS to that of a guided missile frigate . . . it'll be conventional powered, state-of-the-art iFuelCellΔ HYBRID marine propulsion system & not nuclear . . . each of the two carrier will have to be priced less than €9.0 Bn (one time acquisition costs) . . .
Well done you just specified at least two technologies that are not able to achieve your stated aims.
Naval stealth is never going to reduce the RCS of a carrier to a ship 1/10 the size. And fuel cell technology is nowhere near advanced enough to provide sufficient power for a carrier of 60,000+ tons
Very easy to demand things that are impossible to deliver, try again with a serious and credible suggestion

Biggest problem with this ship,
France only has two. Come on France. What's wrong with you people
@MrTherealpad my point exactly. France needs to spend more on their own military rather than on NATO. Large part of the military budget goes to NATO.
We have ordered 8 FREMM, also 5 FDI which are also multi role classes
we don't take 1Trillon € loan a year to give 800 Billions € a year to the military... so, we are not dependent of the loaner as much as the USA is...
United States of Debts
Their role is to escort the CVN, we have only 1 CVN, we dont need more than 2 of them, especially when 2 of our FREMM are also AA (FREMM DA, DA = Défense Aérienne/Aerial Defense)

The military history of France encompasses an immense panorama of conflicts and struggles extending for more than 2,000 years across areas including modern France, Europe, and a variety of regions throughout the world.
According to historian Niall Ferguson: "of the 125 major European wars fought since 1495, the French have participated in 50 - more than Austria (47) and England (43). Out of 168 battles fought since 387 BC, they have won 109, lost 49 and drawn 10."
