Never saw a documentary of a heli carrier before and this ship is a lot more than "just" a heli carrier. Great documentary, which covers so many interesting parts in detail, the ship sounds amazing with a lot of capabilities that it can cover. Surely not a ship for every country/navy, but very interesting. The Netherlands share the Karel Doorman with Germany and the ship seems to cover some of the features of the Thunder Boat, we (Germany) don't have anything close to it, but we do have a very different approach to missions abroad than the French mind you. Anyway, so much thought went into the design of this ship and experience, seems like a fantastic versatile ship. French navy can be proud of it. Thanks for the very interesting look behind the scenes, I always wondered about these ships and this documentary gives soo much more insight than your regular wiki entries of course.

A lot of investment in one place, but for the uses spoken of, not combat with another navy, you do indeed have a very impressive design. ( spoken as an ex-USN Navigator). France has the widest sea territories in the world, above that, France mainland is surrounded by 3 seas, so it is meaningful to be able to use this field. Germany used to prefer invading by land so I understand you don't put much importance in Navy technologies :)

OK let me correct a major mistake here. Its not "the thunder boat". The ship is called TONNERRE which means "Thunder" in French. TONNERRE is part of the MISTRAL class. MISTRAL is the lead ship, TONNERRE is her sister ship as is DIXMUDE. There are two other MISTRAL class ships that were originally to be sold to Russia but after Russia invasion of Crimea the sale was cancelled (as punishment) and sold to EGYPT instead. These ships are called ABDEL NASSER and ANWAR SADAT. There is also a smaller version available for export called the "MISTRAL 140" for countries with smaller budgets, although there are as of yet no orders.

Actually the indian navy is looking that buying 4 for those or bigger, this one is 16 500 tons empty, the bigger version is 25 000 tons empty. An other lighter version 13 500 tonnes is also offered by naval group.
Don't worry, Indian Navy is already ordering four such ships, they will have additional capabilities over and above what this French Mistral class has. Would be great if they modify the French Mistral class for those additional capabilities. France has good relations with Indian MDL, they can make the ships in India. Either them or CSL.
For the record, this class of ship is already proven in most of its possible mission, even when it was just barely accepted into service: - evacuation from Lebanon - disaster relief after hurricane in Lesser Antilles islands - sending combat helicopters at night for raids on Libya
The us navy uses RAST gear. A weight and cable drop[s down and is captured by a skid that locks the cable and the helo can winch itself down and then rides in a track. This helps capture the helicopter in rough seas and then pulls the helo into the hangar bay on smaller ships.
It's a pretty decent ship with some excellent features and capabilities, its only flaw is it's severe lack of defensive hardware but obviously it will never be on its own in a high threat area.
As a French it is nice to see positive post about this multirole design and how France can still cope with few money to keep an acceptable military capability in diverse fields (Howitzer, Navy, Aircraft) . However the truth is we were urged to do our best with fewer budget each year which explains such "swiss knife" design is not reallly a choice but mandatory... Keeping a fully autonomous military capabilities (including own Nuclear weapons not to depend on US decision in case our Nation existence could be jeopardized ) while other European countries were still 100% counting on the US nuke umbrella led to a decline of our economical performances while others could invest in other fields all the money they did not have to invest in the army. This has created an economical competitive advantage within EU and unfair competition which partially explain German economically overperformance for decades (partially...) and finally led to anti European feelings among some workers in declining economical sectors... As a consequence it has been like a viscious circle ... fewer money ... have to struggle to keep military performance anyway ... fewer money available then... struggling more to keep a decent army ... etc... etc... . and a viscious circle decreasing trust in real European partnerships in the same time... It is a pity European nations did not decide to have same position as for civil aircraft with Airbus balancing Boeing and sometimes beating it in some aspects ... European partnerships in the military are never successful and countries always choose US equipment instead... We had some decades to be ready and able to protect ourselves against a threat for our civilization and values as we are facing right now from diverse parts of the world ... With proper European leaders which could have been a decent European capable force beside US ("beside" and not as vassal) but we have wasted this opportunity. This would have been in the US advantage too to let its main partner becoming stronger and reach a more balanced role in the Western partnership. However, as often, the US prefer friendly countries acting like vassals rather like real partners because they think keeping a dependance link is more trustable for them...I think it's a strategic mistake. They made sure by several means (example available on demand) its partner does not become too strong and too independant capable while claiming in the same time he should invest more in its own defense capabilities... Now I wonder how countries like Baltics would react if someday more and more US leaders get closer to Trump line and agree to shift from "America first" line to "America only"... (It would be by the way also a bad move from the US since current events show how much the US, alone, is struggling to cope with anti Western democratic model forces from diverse parts of the world...)

I do like this vessel for its multi role capabilities and it’s surprising that more naval forces in the world don’t have exactly the same in their inventory

@LOLO / VAL Just the conversation of you two is interesting as well. A lot of investment in one place, but for the uses spoken of, not combat with another navy, you do indeed have a very impressive design. ( spoken as an ex-USN Navigator). I only worry that. as evidenced in the Black Sea, shore-to-ship portable munitions are getting very dangerous.
France has the widest sea territories in the world, above that, France mainland is surrounded by 3 seas, so it is meaningful to be able to use this field. Germany used to prefer invading by land so I understand you don't put much importance in Navy technologies :)

Now that's called a purposeful vessel. War, Humanitarian ground whatever you say!!
For the record, this class of ship is already proven in most of its possible mission, even when it was just barely accepted into service:
- evacuation from Lebanon
- disaster relief after hurricane in Lesser Antilles islands
- sending combat helicopters at night for raids on Libya
SF raids in Somalia too
Operation Sangaris and Operation Serval in Africa too.
Quick deployement of entire company teams on land.

I've been in a lot of ships and I say that the RMC De`Couverte was built with navy personnel in mind, because the halls and other passages are much wider and their work and living spaces less crowded.

they are financed by tons of compulsory taxes directly taken from salaries. moreover, the quality of care is poor and it is often difficult to obtain. More and more French people are turning to private hospitals where the service is paid but of better quality. For education, it's the same funding and the level is one of the lowest in Europe, many French people prefer to pay for private schools. In the end, we are forced to pay for an outdated system that is only truly free for those who do not work
@@saumonvenernot to talk about how nurses and doctors are paid badly and often leave france for the USA. Only a current minority of government workers really benefit enormously from the big pensions and the little work
I believe this is the same type that French built for russian navy around year 2014.
it is a helicopter carrier, with a workshop for the maintenance of these helicopters, it is also a ship for transporting military equipment, it can carry around 40 Leclerc tanks, it can transport infantrymen or evacuate civilians in the event of an emergency. disaster like a hurricane, it is a hospital comprising 2 surgical blocks, it is a command center and conventional or satellite radio transmissions, it can balester by filling tanks in order to adapt its level of buoyancy, it can carry 2 transport catamarans of 100 tons capacity each (L-CAT), it is equipped with pods and a bow thruster, which allows it to maintain its GPS position automatically! it can also stabilize itself using rudders! he even impressed the Americans who have much larger ships!
