Maria Ana Cecilia Sophia Kalogeropoulos (New York, 2 of December of 1923 - Paris, 16 of September of 1977), more well-known by the stage name of Maria You are silent was a soprano of Greek origin, considered like the most famous singer of opera of the period of postwar period. You are silent combined an impeccable technique of the bel song with a great dramatic talent, qualities that did the most famous actress-singer to him of that one time. He was extraordinarily versatile, since its repertoire went from the classic serious opera, like the Vestale de Gaspare Spontini, until the operas of Giuseppe Verdi, or Giacomo Puccini. Their studies of the coloratura allowed him to sing so different papers, but this effort accelerated the deterioration of its voice and it carried manifolds to him critics.

I am hip-hop fan, and never listen to opera or classical music. But i just heard this woman by accident and felt her. She is soulful. The sound coming out of her mouth maybe 'classical', but where shes singing from is her soul. And that is something that connects us all.
She died so young, but I can imagine her up there, looking down at us and smiling over how we still appreciate her work.

How I cry everytime I see that last part, like a part of me dies when I see that image of her. It truly was a "farewell" concert on her behalf, as she would soon past away after 2 years of an unsuccessful comeback.

Quando ho ascoltato questa registrazione per la prima volta ho pianto.... la voce di Maria non è la stessa degli anni '50-'60 ed è stato doloroso soltanto immaginare come dovesse sentirsi lei. Poi dopo qualche ascolto ho capito che ero stata superficiale e non avevo saputo cogliere l'estrema bellezza e raffinatezza di questa interpretazione così ricca di emozione, esperienza, tecnica, intelligenza, sensibilità... insomma ricca di Maria...e solo per questo è una gioia ascoltarla.!

This is in my opinion her finest evening, her last night at covent garden. A dying woman out of the prime of her career, singing from her soul, her heart, her guts or whatever we like to call it. On this night Maria Callas poured herself into her music, many say it was not her best performance and technically they are correct, but the emotions were dripping off the walls, and music is an expression of feeling thus she was magnanimous that evening.

Among the Callas singing "o mil babbino caro" videos on youtube, this is my favorite. Why? Because her declines the notes, but the emotion doesn't.
It just shows her sense of musicality, that no matter how hard it is for to sing at this time, she still gives us the proper emotion.
I saw her at the academy of music with Robert Merrill in RIGELETO. literally, when she sang, her voice went right through my heart. it was in 1972 [?] and I will never forget it.

Giacomo Puccini would have been very much honored if he had only lived long enough to witness this lovely "la divina" performed this aria from his opera "Gianni Schicchi" in her prime. I am not trying to antagonize anyone, I am just merely expressing my humble opinion. Maria Callas rendition of "O Mio Babbino Caro" in monophony still outperforms all attempts of today's artists.

The first time I heard an opera live I was 18. It was Twilight of the Gods (the last part of The Ring of the Nibelungs) and I cried the last 40 minutes of it because what I felt inside my body I had never felt it before. Maria Callas has the same magic, she inspires me because she sang her heart out even though she grew up when there was war around her and faced many obstacles. Her voice was born from training, but also from suffering and imperfection (she was called the "Great Ugly Voice").

Indeed this was a performance of 'Mio Babbino Caro' Maria Callas hated the most. In an interview she said, that she never sang that bad and that she is ashamed of her performance. Actually I can't understand why .. I saw several Videos where she performed Mio Babbino Caro (and I love all.. Callas was and IS a divine human being) .. but this is my favorite because for me it's the one with the most depth and at least for me it seems she put her whole heart and soul in. I love her.
She never had the voice for Lauretta and, worse, her voice here is only a fraction of what it once used to be, but the magic of Callas still remains. There is just something about her lyrical interpretation through her phrasing and diction, and her stage presence through her charisma and mannerism that just makes me look past all the imperfection I hear and just love this performance. Truly Callas was an artist to see and not just hear. Also that white dress with the blue cape makes her silhouette very regal and statuesque, evoking this image of a true queen. Simply La Divina.
