So many people are moved man, trust me....for you to talk about Tebaldi as "just voice, nothing else" is so shallow and ignorant, La Tebaldi sang with great diction, feeling every word she sang, divine phrasing, volcanic strength or angelic softness according to what the score required. To you Callas is the best, and to many others too, but to me, and quite a few other people, they were equally great in their own areas and it's completely pointless and stupid to look for a virtual winner.

Tebaldi had the rare (excellent or horrible) chance to live in the time of the greatest operatic divas of all time. And yes, Callas. I'm just one more person inlove with her genius - in a way, her art was something like a parent and a teacher to me - I grew up with it, eager to always hear more.
With this said, Tebaldi is a remarkable artist - the kind that, unfortunately, is nowhere around on the world stages, nor will be, considering the mediocre level both on, behing and in front of the stage.
Tebaldi shouldn't be shadowed by Callas - they are two different artists, each one with a unique and distinctive artistic signature. And this rivalry should have never taken place - there aren't too much Tebaldis, nor Callases, so anybody had got to choose between them.
In fact, there are no more of their kind.
I'm very thankful for this remarcable rendition of hers.

    LYRICS
    Un bel dì, vedremo
    levarsi un fil di fumo
    sull'estremo confin del mare.
    E poi la nave appare.
    Poi la nave bianca
    entra nel porto,
    romba il suo saluto.
    Vedi? È venuto!
Io non gli scendo incontro. Io no.
    e aspetto gran tempo
    e non mi pesa,
    la lunga attesa.
    E uscito dalla folla cittadina,
    un uomo, un picciol punto
    s'avvia per la collina.
    Chi sarà? chi sarà?
    E come sarà giunto
    che dirà? che dirà?
    Chiamerà Butterfly dalla lontana.
    Io senza dar risposta
    me ne starò nascosta
    un po' per celia
e un po' per non morire
    al primo incontro;
    ed egli alquanto in pena
    chiamerà, chiamerà:
    "Piccina mogliettina,
    olezzo di verbena"

I am immensely fortunate to have seen live performances of Madama Butterfly with Leontyne Price, Renata Scotto, Yasuko Hayashi... the list goes on. However, this video of Renata Tebaldi is astonishing. Those who fault her as an actress must see this. I was artistic director of a professional regional theater for nearly thirty years and I am here to say that Tebaldi's performance here is not only vocally ravishing, but I have never been so moved by "Un bel di vedremo" as I was watching this video. She is utterly connected with every word, every gesture, every moment. Her "meanings" are perfectly articulated throughout the aria. I have always loved Renata Tebaldi as a singer, but this video reveals a dimension and a depth to her that, frankly, I didn't know existed. Perhaps she simply needed great directors to access all that she had inside. I would do anything to get my hands on the complete opera video, if it exists. I'd appreciate any suggestions. In the meantime, thank you, Renata... this is astounding! It is art in its highest form.

  • @Zva26
    @Zva26 8 лет назад +936

Just to add to what I previously posted, I am really at a loss to understand how these two sublime artists could have ever been compared. Tebaldi was a modern Twentieth Century soprano whose repertoire was rooted in Puccini and the verismo composers, as well as a few Verdi roles. Callas's art was rooted in a much earlier period (bel canto) and she had a three octave range which enabled her to undertake everything. Callas did not have the vocal velvet of Tebaldi. She was a different artist altogether. Bashing one against the other is stupid and shows an innate ignorance about music. Two different artistic approaches COMPLETELY.

    • @jennifermason9557
      @jennifermason9557 8 лет назад +58

EXACTLY! I personally prefer Callas - she put bags of personality into her performances which made them so electric. She became the characters she portrayed - and she is the standard for the acting. You weren't watching someone play Cio Cio, you were watching Cio Cio. She's heartbreaking in every performance. Rebaldi's voice is of course divine and when she hits 'that' note, well, it's sublime. Let's appreciate the total gorgeousness that each performer brings.

    • @DrGNavarro
      @DrGNavarro 8 лет назад +23

Well, I love Maria but mainly for her "hard" roles as Fioria Tosca (for me the best one) but, for Cio CIo...I reaally prefer Tebaldi and much more, Victoria de Los Angeles, whose voice and technique is absolutely perfect for such a role. In fact Victoria is , for me, one of the best of the history, with a perfection you can barely listen to. But, as I said above, I also do like Callas, Tebaldi or other ones (Freni is a wonderful and credible Mimi).

    • @Zva26
      @Zva26 8 лет назад +28

You're right, of course. For operas like Norma, Anna Bolena, Sonnambula, Medea, Iphegine, Lady Macbeth, Armida, Alceste, Lucia, and the heavy Verdi operas, Callas is the point of reference. For the operas of the early part of the Twentieth Century (those of Puccini, Cilea, Catalani, etc), Tebaldi's voice was tailor made for them. It's just that Callas was able to command a much wider more far more diversified repertoire. Callas was a demonic genius. There won't be another like her...............ever.

No doubt about it. Tebaldi had a ravishing vocal endowment and she was a wonderfully disciplined artist. No reason whatsoever to compare her and Maria Callas. She sings beautifully. I stay away from as much opera as I can - at least all at once, or I'd probably kill myself - haaaa. Music and singing like this is too EMOTIVE. Makes me want to cry, which I do not often do. Still, when I wasn't listening and first heard this, I asked my mom what it was (she loved opera). I said back then, "OMG!" And so, sometimes music can just be too beautiful to bear. (Okay, is that dramatic enough, people? :)

J A McKenzie : Agree or not , that is the best comment I have read ever on this issue. If you are interested in only the sound , Renata Tebaldi's voice is incomperable . A huge voice perhaps not easy to equate with a 15year old girl. I was convinced that it was only the auditory aspect that counted until I saw Frederic Mitterands movie of Madame Butterfly with Ying Huang. Ms. Huang is a lovely soprano but it is the combination of the visual with the music that really makes it very special. I recommend watching and listening.

PAUL VESELY Thanks Paul, I'll look for it. I probably have a soft spot for Tebaldi : My Dad played opera when I was a kid. About 15 ago I heard Tebaldi on TV and loved her so that I bought a double CD set. When Dad died I went through his old records- the Butterfly I heard as a child was Tebaldi! Maybe I remembered her voice. I had never known until I found the old 45 record that it was her.

This work by Puccini is a masterpiece of creative genius. He has revealed to us what it is to love another person with all your soul. This love is beautiful and pure. Puccini shows how we should live to give all to the beloved. This is to my mind the highest purpose of the true art. I cannot praise this performance enough. Thank you for the posting.

I totally disagree with your conclusion. She lost all, not only her life, also her child, and her tradition and her ancestor, relative's connection. It is the very most sacrifice, most tragic of the saddest thing on earth. No one should live as she did.

Duh! In case you hadn't noticed it's a tragedy (as are most Puccini's opera's) He usually deals with flawed love and his heroines almost invariably are poorly treated and die a tragic death. Puccini certainly didn't see his female leads love in the way your suggesting.

Her voice, metallic, out of pitch will never reach the beauty of Tebaldi, Moffo, Caballé, Tomowa Sintow and many others. Callas was a great actress, I agree, but, opera needs singers with beatiful voices, not actresses, and Callas voice was not beautiful. When I was young I thought Callas was the number one and the only one in the planet, but, as I grew up, I realised that I was wrong. After many years of listening and going to recitals, concerts and operas, I realised what I am telling you. Callas was not the star that many people think she was. I invite you to listen carefully, without knowing who is singing.

I am really at a loss to understand how these two sublime artists could have ever been compared. Tebaldi had a ravishing vocal endowment and she was a wonderfully disciplined artist. No reason whatsoever to compare her and Maria Callas. Both had different attributes, sought different artistic goals, and really specialized in their own respective repertoires. Tebaldi was a modern Twentieth Century soprano whose repertoire was rooted in Puccini and the verismo composers, as well as a few Verdi roles. Ms Tebaldi’s voice is bright and girlish and dark and angry and hopeful and playful, as -I think- the voice of Choi Choi in Madame Butterfly should sound. Callas' art was rooted in a much earlier period (bel canto) and she had a three octave range which enabled her to undertake everything. Callas did perhaps not have the vocal velvet of Tebaldi. She was a different artist altogether. Bashing one against the other is stupid and shows an innate ignorance about music. Two different artistic approaches COMPLETELY. Both divas defined a period in Italian opera that we will not likely encounter again.

    Vedi?
    E aspetto gran tempo
    E non mi pesa
    La lunga attesa
    E uscito dalla folla cittadina
    Un uomo, un picciol punto
    S'avvia per la collina
    Chi sarà, chi sarà?
    E come sarà giunto
    Che dirà, che dirà?
    Chiamerà Butterfly dalla lontana
    Io senza dar risposta
    Me ne starò nascosta
    Un po' per celia
E un po' per non morire
    Al primo incontro
    Ed egli alquanto in pena
    Chiamerà, chiamerà
    "Piccina, mogliettina
