My grandfather's favorite aria. I don't know if he ever heard Stefano sing E Lucevan Le Stelle en encore, meaning this performance but I can imagine his pride, and his tears over its beauty. FYI, At La Scala, the audience has the last word. If they want you to sing it twice, three times - you do! As a trained opera singer myself, in rehearsal, you sing the entire opera over and over, for hours, day after day. The difficult thing here is that he knows he must live up to the first time. - what was it in particular they liked best, he is not sure? He wishes the second to be better! I believe the audience asked him to do it again after the second. This was in 1952. I do hope this was heard in America via radio. I know there was an opera every week. If it is La Scala, then maybe he did. I am sleeping in the room my grandparents died in. If Michele (Michael) Angelo Basile did not hear it then, he hears it now.

Cose d'altri tempi..........
Di Stefano`s sound was not "constructed" like Del Monaco or Corelli . He sang with his natural beautiful voice. This was his great appeal but also his great vulnerability. Pippo for ever !!!!
Lohengrin O maybe Corelli might sound more constructed than Del Monaco in beginning for instance because of some mannerisms like the lisping, the sometimes slurred consonants and scooping
@@marcotariello4792 When Corelli was asked by a caller on the Zucker radio show, "''Why do you use so much portamento"? Corelli's response was "To be sure.'' I think some of Corelli's critic's say He scooped a lot, but are confusing portamento, when not written in a score with scooping which he did do, but only when hitting high Cs or the D- flat that F.C. interpolated in Poliuto. I occasionally heard him lisp, but was more noticeable when he sang in French. Yes, sometimes he did slur consonants & had some sloppy phrasing, but the majority of his performances were fantastic, using mezza voce`, diminuendo while caressing the music with a warm quality of voice, and ending arias and duets with thrilling high notes. I saw him at the Met circa 1961 in Trovatore, where he lit up the standing room opera house, combining his pathos, great high notes and good looks. I'm not sure if I understand how the word "constructed" coincides with mannerisms?
sugarbist I can’t possibly disagree on Franco’s greatness. Yes, portamento and scooping is different, and Franco did scoop a lot, even on notes such as Bb4, but, to be honest, many singers did (Di Stefano often scooped as well). I think that Franco definitely had the ability to hit the notes perfectly and efficiently without having to prepare them with scooping. About lisping, I can hear it in almost every recording, especially studio recordings (in the opera house it was probably much less noticeable since it appears on consonants which are not sounds). Well, I would interpret the word “constructed” as something that does not induce the feeling to be spontaneous or natural and, concerning singing, a voice or timbre that does not sounds exactly like an extension of speaking, so maybe mannerisms can have a role in that
Try his Salute, the diminuendo at the end, he created himself, stunned and wowed Met manager Bing to pour that in his book, "I should never hear that kind of voice again in my life..."
@@dimitrigiok Franco Corelli is also masterful, he is the finest Prince Calaf. For Diminuendo, Fleta did it all the time, but the most dramatic one, to me, it is still the Salute by GDS... so long so impressive. ruclips.net/video/j6rfvfw8M_M/видео.html

My dear friend, Lohengrin O! Another absolute jewel that I just now happened to "stumble" upon, a full year after you posted it! And I'm so glad I did! A few months ago, you and I were discussing di Stafano's singing, because even though I always acknowledged him as a great singer, I never really "got it" and didn't understand his appeal or his art. But listening to this, NOW I DO! This is the most perfect, heart wrenching, tear jerking performance I have ever heard! NOW I "get" di Stefano! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting this, and for patiently explaining his greatness to me several months ago. I am so very grateful!
U can click the little Bell besides the subscription and every time I upload, u get notification... Imo all the Legendary singers had Live moments that not only explain and justify their Legend but represent historical documents of how High the human singing can go as a form of Art
Art Danks - Glad you "got it." The best way I can describe Di Stefano is: other great tenors sang in a theater to an audience. Maestro Di Stefano sang into your soul.
There is a lot of music and personality in that singing. Kudos!
Azz
UNICO E INSUPERABILE!!! GRANDISSIMO PIPPO...
ONE OFF THE GREATS TENOR OFF ALL TIMES.
I am familiar with Giuseppe de Stefano's work. I thought his collaboration with Maria Callas was a plus. Though Maria is celebrated throughout the world( justifiably) a great deal of books have been written about her but none that l could find on her partner; de Stefano! For a artist of his calibre, it's seems incredible. This is beyond comprehension. I wish someone would write his biography, there's bound to be a colleague who knew him well enough to do him justice!
they were both never interested about their vocal health only about Emotion and Drama... and they both paid the price... but the Legacy they left behind them, for Eternity
Di Stefano, in every way, was Callas's equal. He was an interpretive genius on his own right.
@@ocasuista850 He was all passion and blood and guts. A very imperfect technique, but so genuine in his interpretation. I think this is why they paired so well together.
I dare any conductor, no matter how big his name, to stop that applause, and to not allow a bis. I certainly dare !!!!!
Irrepetible, sublime, hermoso y llega al alma. No sé cuál es mejor si la primera o el bis. La mejor interpretación existente.
Only Di Stefano could sing this aria so beautifully and with such incredible expression! This aria was made for him!
Impressive! His voice is divine. Only a person truly blessed by God can sing like this. Di Stefano is one of my favourite tenors and this is one of my favourite arias. May he rest in peace!
Two magnificent performances of E Lucevan le Stelle, the second, the bis, virtually an equal to the first...bravissimo!!!
I thought it was better than the first!
A most magnificent diminuendo!
Meraviglioso❤❤❤❤
Di Stefano`s sound was not "constructed" like Del Monaco or Corelli . He sang with his natural beautiful voice. This was his great appeal but also his great vulnerability. Pippo for ever !!!!
I kinda understand how Del Monaco's voice was constructed but Corelli's constructed??
Corelli's voice was not at all constructed
Well, I would interpret the word “constructed” as something that does not induce the feeling to be spontaneous or natural and, concerning singing, a voice or timbre that does not sounds exactly like an extension of speaking, so maybe mannerisms can have a role in that
Beyond sublime. How perfect....
There's something ridiculously captivating in Giuseppe's voice.
Dios besó sus cuerdas vocales!
My God, the diminuendo at 2.00 I could die hearing this.
imagine being actually there lol
Try his Salute, the diminuendo at the end, he created himself, stunned and wowed Met manager Bing to pour that in his book, "I should never hear that kind of voice again in my life..."
Then you might like this performance, somewhere around 1min 50sec ... ruclips.net/video/T-RrG4sfdis/видео.html
@@dimitrigiok Franco Corelli is also masterful, he is the finest Prince Calaf. For Diminuendo, Fleta did it all the time, but the most dramatic one, to me, it is still the Salute by GDS... so long so impressive.

Semplicemente stupendo! R. I. P immenso Pippo.
Stunning!
This is amazing and unattainable! Brilliant phrasing!!!
Semplicemente stellare!
A truly magnificent performance 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Grazie Lohengrin
Superb.I love him.❤
THANK YOU LOHENGRIN O!
Right from the clarinet playing at the start of this, it was clearly going to be an exceptional performance. But there was no preparing for what followed from di Stefano! And the audience! They went WILD! I would've done too!
...they go hysterical
Really conveys the torture of the soul at this moment in the opera.
Giuseppe Di Stefano... amazing. I wish I could've seen him perform in person... Thanks for uploading.
Shane Green I know what you mean Wishin ain't getting! LOL
Quale musicalità! E quale naturalezza! Una gioia per l’anima!
Unbelievably heartbreaking. Never the same way twice; both times heart-rending.
The best tenor for this Aria! Perfect! Thank you!
At his best a truly great tenor
Grandiose! Perfect!
Not surprising, it was SPECTACULAR.
The most BEAUTIFU voice of ALL time. No one can SIGN better THAN DI STEFANO.
