Di Stefano did not just have a sweet voice. He was always incredibly musical, too And in performances like this, every cell in his body sang and acted + he had the best diminuendi among tenors. As if his full voice was not sweet enough!

This is simply stunning. Why doesn't musicality like this seem to exist any more? No sign of strain, everything beautifully supported, and those gorgeous diminuendi...thank God for recording technology or we would never know such artistry. It certainly isn't being displayed by anyone nowadays. I don't blame the audience for going wild! And singing it in Italian just seems to increase the passion and drama. I'm sure Goethe would have approved! Who is the Charlotte?
As I’ve started learning Italian I am so enraptured by the natural emotionality that it expresses. I see di Stefano carrying with him the emotionality of not only his language but his culture. Such heart ❤

Il grande Pippo è meraviglioso , UNICO e in questo brano è veramente commovente con il pubblico toccato dalla sua interpretazione.. Il suo fraseggio è così inconfondibile , così scandito che si potrebbe trascrivere tutta la pagina che esegue! Conosco la sua grande generosità per il suo pubblico tanto da concedere tutto sè stesso con ardore e calore , ma desidero comunicare con lui come fosse presente, come fosse accanto a noi tutti perchè la bellezza del suo canto ci regala sempre forti emozioni .Che brivido questo ascolto!

Il suo fraseggio è così specifico che se uno volesse prendersi la briga potrebbe scrivere sotto dettatura tutto il brano che esegue, perché la sua generosità verso il suo Pubblico?? È risaputo che invariabilmente dà tutto se stesso e concede i suoi Bis con slancio e disinvoltura!! In my opinion, it is not length of career that matters, and nor is it careful tending and pampering of the voice. It is passion and generosity and communication and drama. If that shortens the career, so be it.
This performance is all about "heart". We have a full dose of this commodity as we do when Di Stefano is at his best. No surprises here.
I think certain singers have a permanent place in the 'golden age of opera', which transcends time and geography. Di Stefano is one of them.
