- Semi Truck Hits Railroad Crossing Gate, Radar Used To Check Train Speeds, Railroad Shoo-Fly Update, Train Crosses New Railroad Bridge & New Railroad Track Close Look. 3 Norfolk Southern trains are seen in Richwood, Kentucky on the NS railroad main line known as the Rathole Line. Railroad tunnels were numerous until the 1950s and that is how the line gets its name. The line owned by Cincinnati runs to Chattanooga, Tennessee and this video was filmed at MP 17. Last week I filmed the line at MP 193 near the Tennessee border.
This video starts with a fast southbound intermodal train. Due to popular request, I brought the radar unit out again and checked the speeds of the first two trains. The second train was a southbound grain train. A semi truck went over the crossing with the gates going down and got the crossing gate hooked on the top of the trailer. That bent the gate sideways enough that the gate got caught on the flashing lights above it and would not go all the way back up. That made the lights continue to flash and created a problem for other semi trucks. Trucks wanting to turn right had to go in the centre of the road in order to prevent hitting the gate. I called the number on the crossing gate to report that the lights were still flashing and the one gate wasn't all the way up properly. I heard the dispatcher talk to someone about the crossing gate and a couple of trains had a slow order of 15mph until they got over the crossing. The third train is a northbound grain train going over the new bridge. Notice how the dirt behind the bridge is being dug out for the future road. The last time I was here the dirt was up to the top of the bridge and it made a big concrete cave. Lol. Don't miss Chessie and Norfie along with the slide show after the trains!

You calling in the gate repair is a fine example of someone taking responsible action to prevent an accident and injury. Well done!
Solid live action! No teleprompter. No producer feeding you info in your ear monitor. No script. Heck you're the camera operator! 👍🏽 All dayyyyyyy 👍🏽
Tip of the cap to NS for their quick response to a rail fan's call.
Some other railroads should learn from this experience.
Most of us are more interested in safety rather than trespassing or doing damage
Thanks for watching!

Jaw Tooth isnt a Mr Run-n-Tell-it like you, nobody respects people who specialize in weak weasel tactics....
"The permanent line is now in use permanently" - love that Jaw Toothian wisdom 😉 Great video JT!
Thanks for watching!
From the Department of Redundancy Department😆
@@sanddabz5635 Let it be agreed that I agree 😉
Sounds permanent to me.
Being at the right place at the right time. Calling in the crossing issue. Personally interacting with the RailRoad.
I like how comfortable Chessie and Norfie are at the end of the video! They have it made!
Hey Jaw Tooth I really appreciate you being out there Consistently and setting the EXAMPLE of our Freedoms your a Great American 🇺🇸 GOD BLESS YOU TODAY!🚂🚂
Thank you very much!
True!
Great Catches!
Thanks for watching!
Awesome railfan videos that certainly lived up to “WAIT! THERE’S MORE!” You do know how to provide the extraordinary. Thank you.
Love your video’s. I’ve been a rail fan my whole life. Lived a block from track when I was a kid.
Good Saturday morning to you JT!!
NS needs to install cameras at crossings. The damage done to gates and signs can be followed up by bills sent to the drivers causing it.
Thanks for watching!
It would be far more expensive to install and maintain that across the system than they’d ever recoup from sending invoices.
Drivers worried about dropping loads instead of safety
Good morning everyone from Upstate New York. Have a great Saturday, and its getting off on the right track with Jawtooth
I remember another time you filmed a truck hitting the same gate. Then a train came through and finished it off, lol. Another great video!
Thanks for watching!
Brian, fellow that was awesome job calling the 800 number posted on the signal post you set a good example of why that blue safety plate is there and you used the identifying number associated to that crossing and mile post location, as far as the “grain shuttle” ( hss ) the crew had to come to a complete stop and flag the crossing and because of the stop the previous signal aspect is no longer valid, the restart is made at restricted speed 15 mph ( your now operating with out a signal indication) and cannot increase speed until the leading end reaches the next signal with a more favorable aspect…..40 years retired ms~~~
Thanks for calling Jaw Tooth. What a great bunch of people at NS for their quick action.
So very glad you called that in. W.W.O.T. had showen how rails were lose and the track bouncing up and down. I asked him if he reports those defects when he sees them. He never responded. Another one said they know that the track is in bad repair. So he just let it up to the track inspectors. I think it ought to be a railfaning law, that if you see a defect, you ought to call it in, to prevent a future accident or derailment that could injure or kill someone.
So my hat is off to you J.T. for doing the right and responsible thing!
Thanks for returning to the shoo-fly area again. Love it!!
That was awesome, my favorite spot and the radar gun. 50 was the fastest I have seen so far. On the last video with the cars running the crossing and now this truck, I'am a retired truck driver who retired early just for those reasons. I had way to many close calls with these type of drivers, Great video!!!👍👍
Thanks 4 sharing the radar gun, it's fun to know how fast they go...
All kinds of live action going on Jaw Tooth! Props for looking out for the drivers safety at the crossing gate!👏👏👏👏👏👏
I'm glad you addressed why there was such a loud noise from some of the joints. Those joint differences were very noticable. I was initially surprised because I thought te new rails were welded. But your description makes sense. Thanks!
Thanks for watching and commenting Lee!
I heard that too - those joints definitely need welded before that issue causes a derailment - that would be messy there!
Yeah, JT; my grandfather used to take me to watch trains a LONG time ago. I am in my '70's now and still love it! In fact, I watch the "Railroad Archeologist" down in Florida, too. He found the last remaining rail section that was the connection point to the Florida Keys railroad. That mostly- bridge to Key West was destroyed by a cat 5 hurricane, I believe in 1935. In fact, it cleaned the Island of Islamorada almost off the map.
That Roli from Florida
There's nothing unusual about that joint. It's temporary until a welding crew does a thermite weld on the cut-in. Welded rail is laid in quarter-mile sections and even when laying long stretches of mainline, it isn't always immediately welded at some joints, like at switches, control points, etc. A temporary joint is initially used and a MoW welding crew comes along later. At least that's how it was done when I worked on the Santa Fe.
Good morning to all from SE Louisiana 6 Aug 22.

@@williamcoulston7788 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for the shoo-fly update. Nice to see the new alignment all worked in and handling normal track speed. For all the work you put in to document this location every crew should give a long and loud toot salute. If I could I'd give you one! Good job on calling that damage in. A thoroughly enjoyable video, thanks!
Thanks 👍
Good morning Mr Jawtooth. I’m glad you called it in .
Excellent film JT, top work calling in the gate issue so the proper action could be taken. I do the same when I spot water leaks in my local area.
Good video. I liked the way you covered the progression of putting in the new main and the shoo fly. Great railroading coverage.
Thank you very much!
Back in the late 1970's, there was a similar where the crossing gate came down on top of a city bus. The lights were flashing, and the crossing gate was messed up. The, train to stop before the crossing gate was on the same track that the train was on.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for showing the bolted rail joint. The wheels on every car in that first train clacked loudly going over that joint.
No problem 👍
A great picture is taken at the right time at the exact moment something happens. Or just a picture/ video that is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
You know you are doing great when you can do that time n time again.
Great job Jaw Tooth!
GOOD MAN FOR CALLING IT IN.
Hello from the UK and to other Brits watching. It is as if the shoefly never happened!
Alas, poor Shoo-Fly!! I knew him well!
JT lookin' pretty fly in that shirt too!
Live Action!!!
Definitely carrying the mail. Critters chilling inside today. That's the longest that Chessie stayed still. 😺
THAT truck driver that hit the crossing gate actually ran the crossing lights. The lights actually come on before the gates come down. Idiotic drivers like that put everyone lives in danger. THANK you for calling it in avoiding a possible catastrophe.
Awesome update Jawtooth! Love seeing the progress at the Shoo Fly, it will be missed but it's still such a interesting spot to see how things turn out there! Thanks for the update!
Thanks a ton!
Good morning!!! Jaw tooth, from the Hunter Harrison Special !!!! The longer the train, the better!!!!
Awesome, my friend. 😍 💕 Thanks for sharing. 👍 Have a nice day. 🤗✨
Thumbs up for calling in the damaged gate!
15:00
Norfie teaching Chessie how to cat. lol
Booking nice trains 👍🏻 good place . I see Jessie and kitty hanging out . 😂 👍🏻🇺🇸🇨🇦 Robin . Be safe
Good man JT! Too many people today would just pass thru, thinking "not my problem ", but you definitely sped up the process of getting repairs made. Thanks for a great video!
Exactly!
How cool! Speeding trains and good track makes for good railfanning :) That last grain train was working on a slow order I think. I like how looking through the underpass shows nothing but ground - that's the next phase :)
Thanks for watching!
I'm surprised how quickly they have dropped the earth on the other side of the new viaduct.
The shoo- fly is officially gone and the permanent line is in permanently lol. Hat’s of to NS for responding quickly to a concerned rail fans call about that damaged crossing gate. Thats heads up on their part. Now if only other RRs take notice. Seriously the permanent track looks great. I too was wondering the same thing about how they tie in new sections of track. Nice job JT thanks for sharing bud. Take care.🚂👍🏼😎U the man!!
No speed restriction on that new mainline! (Except for after you called it in!) Good on you, Mr. Tooth.
Hello Brian! You Catch more Crossing Gates getting Broke than anyone. Reason is you’re out there Daily recording Content. Thanks! 👍
Very true, just showing up is 90 percent of success. Thanks for watching !
Train company should be saluting your diligence ...I will . Great job sir 👏
It's nice to know your conscientious calling in that crossing gate. That may have saved a life or two. Thanks! I always enjoy your videos 😊👍👍!
Glad you enjoyed it! I always try to do the right thing. The lady who I reported it to is in another state. I forgot where but maybe Atlanta? It is the NS police
Great video Brian; I have not seen any other sites showing train speeds with a radar gun. Very cool. Good man calling in that crossing gate accident; and NS answered nicely and responded.
Thanks for watching!
Alas poor Shoo-Fly, we hardly knew ye!
Hi Brian! Great railfaning video back at the Shoo-Fly Pie again.
Thanks again!
Another awesome video. Thanks Jaw Tooth 👍👍
I find it fascinating watching you videos and going on google street view to see where you were filming, I now know what the shoo-fly was, the ones where the train goes down the main street are particularly interesting.
There is nothing like the sound of a fast freight making the rails sing.
Awesome beans! Love the live action. ..Thank you for the videos!
mr. Jaw tooth, I want you to know that I certainly enjoy your videos and the accompanying narrative.
One leftover tie - souvenir time! 😂
9:00 Looks like the truck dragged the gate and rotated the entire gate mechanism slightly on the mast. Most crossing gates are supposed to rise and drop perpendicularly to the roadway. But this one got turned so it now strikes the cantilever.
The signals are designed so that the lights should flash if any gate is not vertical. That is an example "right-side failure".
Thank you for going back to Richwood, Kentucky on 5 August 2022 to record these trains, Jaw Tooth! The shoo-fly is gone, and work is progressing on building the road under the new railroad bridge. The problem with that crossing gate is the second problem with that gate that you have recorded. If you remember, last year in one of your early videos at the shoo-fly, a semi-trailer truck bent that same gate so that it was across the railroad tracks. A southbound train came down the tracks, hit the bent gate, and broke the gate. The broken gate was knocked across the road if I remember correctly.
Thank you very much for this great video! ✨✨
👍Merci beaucoup ! 🙏
Wow! That first NS was flying!!
Good show Jaw Tooth. On my guy I watch near Tampa he said there is a hole in the side of the crossing lights so the engineer can see the road crossing lights are working.
Thanks for this video!
Complete transformation of the crossing.
Glad you liked it!
Very cool train video too bad the shoo fly is gone and crazy truck driver trying to beat the gates thank again Jaw Tooth keep up the good work I enjoy it
Thanks for watching!
Call it in. Any time you see damage call the number on the blue plate, give them the crossing number
Yes I did that. Thanks for watching!
They sure did clear out the shoo-fly quick!
Awesome video as always!! Oh, two days ago I saw the Canadian Pacific passenger train go by the house. Yet, train tracks are freight lines that CN uses.
Another great one. This is a good location, shoo-fly or not. I think that's the same gate that got wacked by a truck trying to beat it, and damaged the gate so that it got wacked again by the train when it came through. As I remember, the train took it off. You got that one on video a while back. Thanks.
Good call giving NS a heads up. 👍👍
Always!
I love the end of your videos showing the animals
A fast peace of track. Thanks. Chris from England
Those two SB moving at a good clip and if your didn't see it previously you wouldn't have known there even was a shoo fly track. No sirree those UPS trailers gotta fly and within two weeks no speed restrictions. JT got the ball rolling by calling in the crossing problem - don't assume the other person will do it. Just like the dispatcher doesn't know how the gates will function so the train train had a slow orders imposed. Lovely pose by Norfie and Chessie as if they were going to be added to Mt..Rushmore. With that plaintive stare.I hope you brought snacks
Thanks for watching!
Thanks Jawtooth for the update on the overpass, also interesting when you videoed where the shoestring used to be!👍🚂🚂🚂
Thanks for watching!
You did good!!!! More videos of the progress of the soo-fly!!!!
Great to see the new track and overpass. Thanks Jaw Tooth!
Thanks for watching!
Glad you called the number on the blue sign and reported the issue.
ChainsawN&W1218, Z train was highballing, long grainer, good 👍 that You reported that so there are no accidents.
Good work calling that in.
Great locomotive power action and great Nathan horn action
Hi my friend, awesome video, I liked it!
Great 👍 video!!!
Amazing videos jaw tooth keep up the good work
Thanks a ton! I am trying to do 50 videos in 50 days and I think I am up to 41
Great catches Son ... Thx and on to another of your vids ...
Glad you like them!
Great video JT..
Thanks 👍
Awesome job J T
Thanks!
Great location great video thanks jaw tooth
Great video JT. Love the Shoo-fly updates or should I now say "the new permanent, permanent way updates" 😀 interesting to see them slowly dig the dirt out from the other side of the rail bridge.
Thanks for watching !
Isn't this crossing the one you showcased a while back where the gate had been damaged by a semi, laying across the track and then hit and destroyed by a train?
Obviously no speed restrictions on this line, of course there weren't any on the Shoo-fly either. NS has it together.
No, I think that was some little town in Ohio.
@@williamsquires3070 you just described every town in Ohio....😁😁
Top speed for the most of the Rat Hole is 60 for the IM freight. When this project is completed in late 2023, that crossing where the truck hit the crossing gate will be eliminated. All truck traffic will go under the RR.
No,It was this one
@@wow77777 - well, I don’t recall that one, but there was another JT video somewhere in Ohio where there was a Wye-shaped street, and the tracks crossed the lower portion of the Wye. A big truck came by when the crossing gates were lowering, and broke the wooden gate-arm, leaving it on the tracks, which the train promptly ran over, making crunchy bits out of it. 🤣
Jaw Tooth, the reason for the slight variation in speeds on the radar gun, is not that the train speed is changing, but you angle of your aiming is changing. The most accurate speed check is straight at the train coming at you (or going away). In other words, the degree of angle for the check, should be as close to zero as possible, to be accurate. Try googling information about this sometime, when you're killing time waiting for a train. Best regards and nice job.
Nice job JT. Great that you reported the gate and nice trains.
Thanks for watching!
Amazing train video!!
Thank you very much!
I'm happy to see that you're not afraid to use the radar gun.
Seems like ever since somebody ticked off a train crew by using his Hadar gun, everybody's been laying low for a while.
Very nice it's too bad that gate hit the truck hopefully that gets properly installed and that doesn't happen again have an Excellent weekend Jaw Tooth your videos are the very best!
Thanks, you too!
Good idea calling the number Brian. Surprised that the semi didn't completely rip the gate clean off.
Nice video Brian! Have a great weekend!
Thanks 👍 Have a great weekend also! I appreciate your support
@@JawTooth You're welcome and thanks 👍
That overpass, didn't look that high. What is the height restrictions? Great video, Brian! Keep up, the great work!
Thanks for calling that in Mister Tooth.
Wow that area looks totally different now.
Thxs Jaws nice well done.....
No problem 👍
good morning sunshine 🌞
