Hello Lonely. I am 70 years old. As an insurance adjuster for 35 years, I met thousands of people. Some of them were farmers. Even unsuccessful farmers were very talented people. Not necessarily college trained, but abundant in practical wisdom. Farmers are carpenters, mechanics, weathermen, accountants, metal workers, welders, electricians, plumbers. The list goes on and on. I am disabled, and I can't tell you how much I enjoy watching the farming operations on you tube, and yours specifically. The city folk, and town folks couldn't manage a whole day in your world. Your base knowledge of how things work is inexhaustible. Regarding your French, that is your business. Keep up the hard work. For your next project, try cleaning up and organizing your shop. Hey Wes, Thats to bad about the head gasket. Dont feel bad my friend my friend. Dad and I Have dump truck that we bought, and turned in to a fiasco. We wound swapping motors 3 times before we got a good motor for her. We were having block issues to start with. The original block was junk come to find out. So we decided to get a used block that was supposed to be good. NOT! And after that second go around we bought A new virgin block that the cylinders had never been cut for pistons, got that done built the motor, stuck her in and bingo. Fixed that issue. So, dont feel alone man we all go through it at some point. Its always the unseens or unpredictables. Anyway, You have a tractor there that I would love to see you work on and get running. It was outside in another video, and it showed up in this video inside. And thats that ole bolens husky. Man what a tractor back in the day. Dad id everything with that tractor, had the snow plow, rear tiller all kinds of stuff for it. It was the very first tractor I learned to cut grass with. I know its kinda stupid for me to ask that. But a tractor is a tractor in my eyes. Take care and look forward to the next one.

I would love to see one of your ih tractors in your barn now fixed up . instead of buying another . that way we get to see you and your family using it from time to time. just a thought.

I have followed all the episodes of the life on the 4960 and loved it.Here is an idea that you may want to consider. You have already covered what happens on a farm over the winter months. How about finishing out the rest of the year on what happens throughout the planting, spraying, cutting hay along with baling and the hauling, county fair( if your kids are in 4H), and so on. Just mainly the daily life of a farm.

On your comment about a burnout, I agree with you completely. Years ago, I bought an old Avery 3 wheeled tractor that had burned completely when the barn is was in caught fire. I bought it for junk price way back when scrap iron was at a penny a pound, I paid 10 dollars for it the way it sat, hauled it home and completely rebuilt it from ground up. I figured I had close to 900 dollars in it after completion, I used it for about a year then sold it for a lot less than I had in it, due to my need of a PU truck. My feelings on doing another one is a definite NEVER again, I have to commend you on the job you had undertaken and completed, not only on the labor side but mainly the monetary portion. Parts are not cheap, like they were when I did the Avery. I have 3 tractors now, all are Massey Fergusons, a MF 175 (diesel), a MF 35 Deluxe (gasoline) and a MF 10 Vari-Speed 10 horse power, which means that it has a 4 speed tranny with a lever that directs the drive belt pulley onto a 5 stage secondary pulley to cause the tractor to have 20 speeds forward and 5 speeds in reverse. The MF 10 is basically a lawn and garden tractor, which I use when going to various Plow Days of Lawn and Garden tractor clubs in the area, it will pull a double 10 inch set of plows as if they weren't behind the tractor with plows at maximum plow depth. Without a doubt, it is my play toy that I rebuilt from scratch after I inherited it from one of my uncles after he passed away. As I stated before, I am in complete awe that anyone operating a farming business such as you can find the time to undertake such a task and expense. I own a small farm myself (54 acres) but at my present age of 71 years, would never contemplate such a task if a situation does arise. Well done may you always have the ability to do such jobs well beyond my age

Well Wes, I call it a job well done. With the head gasket being the last thing you do before getting 4960 to work you should give yourself an atta boy ribbon (that's all anyone not rich and famous gets) as you did more then most people can do. The reason that you need to over-torque and wait and what have you is so that the bolts re-stretch and so that they don't loosen up whilst you are pulling the ol' plow. I give you credit my friend on the whole rebuild, while you spent much more money, I know the feeling of walking into a dealership with a long list of parts. I rebuild motorcycles in the free time that I have not in a cab. Keep the great videos coming! Cheers!

Wes As we all know( people raised on a farm) Dad is ALWAYS right even when he isn't. :) As for the smirky that gave you those Briggs and Stratton torque specs, I'd be lookin for a new gasket and bolt set from him! Still, I'm glad you saved the 4960. I rebuild a car now and then for a daily driver and you know what you got when it's done, plus helluva lot cheaper than a brand new one. Oh, and Fords torque their heads down seven ways from Sunday,too. PITA Be careful on the roads getting to the fields- lotsa dingbats out there! 57
I know your blood runs green , but I know you have a soft spot for the ford N , being you own one , maybe take one of them , maybe v8 it , and make it look like a deere , kinda a cheap platform , and build with what you find as far as sheet metal , an old deere hood ... basically make a fun toy , but on the cheaper scale , TRACTOR RATROD ;)
Hi Wes That sucks with the head gasket. you would be surprised at some of the they should know better stuff, I fixed after Deere have had it in the local shop, and some of the BS, they tell customers with no mechanical knowledge is quite interesting too round here. Loved the whole series looking forward to the next one what ever it is, I'll be here watching with great interest . First highlight of this one was you got it done, The second was you saying the words, "Burned tractors suck to re build". I will only say this to you once." Told you that at the beginning", L.O.L. You did win anyways.. The tractor did start, run, shifted.. reved up and had a nice sound.. That the head gasket blew on the first test drives isn't really your fault.. Well i hope JD gave you at least a discount on the second head gasket.. And nonetheless to did a great job on that tractor by all means, i mean it looked like a burned mess and thats exactly what it was.. And now its a nice tractor again. And with all that wiring and hoses burned down so you couldn't possibly know where they go from where they were i can just imagine how much time in looking through manuals and partlists it was and how much thinking through it just to get it back together the right way.. Its one thing to tear a tractor apart, repair/replace a piece and put it back together just the other way around you tore it down.. But to put a partly destroyed tractor back together.. Thats another thing.
Wez you can recover the data with software from Piriform or any other recovery software things don't get deleted till they are wrote over with information..I've managed to recover loads of things even after 3 Re-installs.. Ty for the videos
Just go buy a JD 9560r and just drive it and video it...haha! That would save some painstaking rebuild work and should be plenty to pull your sprayer! Just kidding, but great series on the 4960. I'm sure there will be a few more hiccups before this tractor is 100% but it'll get there. I'd like to see the cab when you get the new interior kit in it. Better get the A/C vacuumed down and recharged soon...gonna be hot weather before we know it!
Reasoning behind the weird bolt pattern torque setting is, usually due to the fact, you torque it, run it till it just warms up, shut it down, let set to cool. This allows the head to "seat" to the block. At least, this is how it was with my old '61 Ford 881 Select-O-Speed. 75 ft lbs? Someone needs to get their backside chewed out for giving you those wrong specs. I'd be furious and I'd let the dealership know about it too. As for the 4960, again, you did an awesome job on her especially in her condition. Cheers
I really appreciate your hard work and it saddens me that john deere ( the one people that supposed to know what they are doing ) tells you the wrong specs on that head gasket. It is like giving you something and taking it away. I hate sending something to scrap that has potential. For instance I have 9 vehicles in my driveway that most of them was either crashed or mechanically bad. And I fixed them. So thank you wes for saving this tractor from the scrap

There's always hiccups with builds like these both on your own part and the tractor manufacturers part bottom line is that you see it through. Shop looks clean that's a bonus
At the rate you work that M ought to take you an afternoon. Even just get 'er up on her wheels running and driving. Then you can park it out with all the other farmalls and have more room to work on green ones.

Great idea! Sort of the same as i did. i bought a tractor with a broken transmission. Got i cheap because it was in such bad shape. i fixed it, and now its ready for sale. :) Problem is, i got a bit to "attached" to it, so now i don't know if i even want to sell it :P lol Anyway, good luck.
Sucks about the HG. Nice job and cant wait to see what you get with the cab kit. Have you charged the AC yet? There is an 8760 for sale up around me in Ct.... but that may be a bit bigger than your looking for and you probably would not make money on something like that. If I was going to rebuild something to make money.... I would look for a 4020 or maybe a 4450. Both those are getting ridiculous prices right now. I think your in love................................. with your 4960 ;)

I kept looking for holes in the barn where you through something through the wall. That guy that gave you the wrong specs should pay for the new gasket. I sure wouldn't want him installing it, but at least pay for the gasket and maybe a 12 pack of soda. That coulda cost you lots of money right there!
When I do the high hp deeres I usually get new head bolts and with the head gasket they send a paper that gives the head bolt length and the torque specs weather the bolts are flanged or washerd I always shellack the gasket both sides and run it till it's hot then retorque it hot never had one go twice looking forward to the video

thats a really good idea farmer ... Go with the classic rebuild of a tractor .. does it have to be diesel or gas? or does it matter i wont be helping in this i am in the east coast of canada .. farming hasn't started yet to wet.
Maybe I missed it but did your insurance company pay out when this tractor burned and if so, did you have to buy it back from them (I know it never left the farm) before you started the rebuild? Great work and videos by the way!
you did an grate job with that deer im not a big deer fan but she sounds good was wondering are u on face book i run my little family farm i just redid a 1566 international and a 1943 H farmall i am still running my dady 806 farmall diesrl 1965 model with over 9000 hrs on her i got a soft sopt for the older stuff lol
FYI, I think those are torque to yield head bolts so you should use new bolts every time you reinstall the head, and follow the torque sequence carefully. I have a friend that has a 4955 and it has had head gasket issues, I don't think it's John Deere's best engine.

That might be the strangest torque sequence I have ever heard. I don't work on tractors that is just from what I have done with cars. Sucks you lost the footage from cam, even the messing around as you call it is interesting to most of us viewers. Any tractor you get will be awesome to watch IMO!

You did win anyways.. The tractor did start, run, shifted.. reved up and had a nice sound.. That the head gasket blew on the first test drives isn't really your fault..
Well i hope JD gave you at least a discount on the second head gasket..
And nonetheless to did a great job on that tractor by all means, i mean it looked like a burned mess and thats exactly what it was.. And now its a nice tractor again. And with all that wiring and hoses burned down so you couldn't possibly know where they go from where they were i can just imagine how much time in looking through manuals and partlists it was and how much thinking through it just to get it back together the right way.. Its one thing to tear a tractor apart, repair/replace a piece and put it back together just the other way around you tore it down.. But to put a partly destroyed tractor back together.. Thats another thing.
Wez you can recover the data with software from Piriform or any other recovery software things don't get deleted till they are wrote over with information..I've managed to recover loads of things even after 3 Re-installs.. Ty for the videos

Just go buy a JD 9560r and just drive it and video it...haha! That would save some painstaking rebuild work and should be plenty to pull your sprayer! Just kidding, but great series on the 4960. I'm sure there will be a few more hiccups before this tractor is 100% but it'll get there. I'd like to see the cab when you get the new interior kit in it. Better get the A/C vacuumed down and recharged soon...gonna be hot weather before we know it!
Reasoning behind the weird bolt pattern torque setting is, usually due to the fact, you torque it, run it till it just warms up, shut it down, let set to cool. This allows the head to "seat" to the block. At least, this is how it was with my old '61 Ford 881 Select-O-Speed. 75 ft lbs? Someone needs to get their backside chewed out for giving you those wrong specs. I'd be furious and I'd let the dealership know about it too.

I really appreciate your hard work and it saddens me that john deere ( the one people that supposed to know what they are doing ) tells you the wrong specs on that head gasket. It is like giving you something and taking it away. I hate sending something to scrap that has potential. For instance I have 9 vehicles in my driveway that most of them was either crashed or mechanically bad. And I fixed them. So thank you wes for saving this tractor from the scrap

There's always hiccups with builds like these both on your own part and the tractor manufacturers part bottom line is that you see it through. Shop looks clean that's a bonus
At the rate you work that M ought to take you an afternoon. Even just get 'er up on her wheels running and driving. Then you can park it out with all the other farmalls and have more room to work on green ones.

the case 3394 I did last spring torqued at 220foot lbs' some of these torque specs make you wonder what where they thinking

Sort of the same as i did. i bought a tractor with a broken transmission. Got i cheap because it was in such bad shape. i fixed it, and now its ready for sale. :)
Problem is, i got a bit to "attached" to it, so now i don't know if i even want to sell it :P lol

Sucks about the HG. Nice job and cant wait to see what you get with the cab kit. Have you charged the AC yet? There is an 8760 for sale up around me in Ct.... but that may be a bit bigger than your looking for and you probably would not make money on something like that. If I was going to rebuild something to make money.... I would look for a 4020 or maybe a 4450. Both those are getting ridiculous prices right now. I think your in love................................. with your 4960 ;)
That's an aneriod on your injection pump. It controls fuel delivery during startup

I kept looking for holes in the barn where you through something through the wall. That guy that gave you the wrong specs should pay for the new gasket. I sure wouldn't want him installing it, but at least pay for the gasket and maybe a 12 pack of soda. That coulda cost you lots of money right there!

When I do the high hp deeres I usually get new head bolts and with the head gasket they send a paper that gives the head bolt length and the torque specs weather the bolts are flanged or washerd I always shellack the gasket both sides and run it till it's hot then retorque it hot never had one go twice looking forward to the video
out of curiosity what is with that john deere that's behind you ? has it got a flat tire? it seems to be leaning to the left quite a bit! you have another jd out behind the driving shed is it fixable? keep up the good work! to bad about the head gasket! pretty bad when you can't get straight answers from jd themselves!
Do your 4320! They are a great tractor (and they pull like hell when you crank them up).

thats a really good idea farmer ... Go with the classic rebuild of a tractor .. does it have to be diesel or gas? or does it matter i wont be helping in this i am in the east coast of canada .. farming hasn't started yet to wet.
Maybe I missed it but did your insurance company pay out when this tractor burned and if so, did you have to buy it back from them (I know it never left the farm) before you started the rebuild? Great work and videos by the way!

you did an grate job with that deer im not a big deer fan but she sounds good was wondering are u on face book i run my little family farm i just redid a 1566 international and a 1943 H farmall i am still running my dady 806 farmall diesrl 1965 model with over 9000 hrs on her i got a soft sopt for the older stuff lol

FYI, I think those are torque to yield head bolts so you should use new bolts every time you reinstall the head, and follow the torque sequence carefully. I have a friend that has a 4955 and it has had head gasket issues, I don't think it's John Deere's best engine.
This is why I always ask for the name of the person when dealing with customer/service care.

That might be the strangest torque sequence I have ever heard. I don't work on tractors that is just from what I have done with cars.
Sucks you lost the footage from cam, even the messing around as you call it is interesting to most of us viewers.
