- Sweet Banana was the anthem of the Rhodesian African Rifles (RAR), the regiment was made purely of blacks, although the officers were generally white. The RAR was formed in May of 1940, and was disbanded on December 31, 1981. It saw service in World War II, the Suez Crisis, the Malayan Emergency, and the Rhodesian Bush War.

As essentially the only infantry formation of any actual size and strength to survive the sham election, the RAR prevented Civil War from breaking out in 1981 during the Battle of Bulawayo. Ironically, they, along with a few other former white led units, likely kept Mugabe in power as the war would have likely forced him out. Even more ironically, they did this on their own, without orders from the central government according to most witnesses. Their reward was to be disbanded, as they were seen as unable to be controlled by Mugabe and ZANLA, and loyal to the whites.
I had the honor and pleasure of working with them on many occasions. A brave and proud regiment. Goodness knows what has happened to these men now. Bless them.
The RAR has the catchiest song of all the branches of the security forces
Definitely!!! The RAR had the catchiest anthem of all the Rhodesian units!
Indeed
What a great tribute to the Rhodesian African Rifles. The visuals clearly show the truth: Black and White Rhodesians proudly fought side by side with mutual respect. Please remember.
I will remember them.
wow , well done , cheers mate
One of the best Regiments of the Rhodesian Security Forces, I had the pleasure of working with this group of warriors in the late 70's
I was too young to fight in the army. But we found ways to help. I don’t know if your school had a “pen pall” thing then but it really helped us. I was really looking forward to be RSAS. But had to move to Canada and joined The French Forgien Legion because nothing is left is Salisbury, Bulawayo or Wankie. I don’t know the rest of the country.
In the Rhodesian African rifles black and white soldiers lived, fought and died along side each other in the heat of Egypt and burma to the cold of the Arden
Easily the best Rhodesian march, bar none!
5:18 the professionalism of the Rhodesian Army
10/10 landing 10/10 bones broken so 10 stars
thats actually a technique taught to all paratroopers to disperse the weight of landing across their body rather than directly on their legs called a PLF.

Proper Rhodesians.
