The Rhodesian African Rifles (RAR) were a regiment of the Rhodesian Army. The ranks of the RAR were recruited from the black African population, although officers were generally from the white population. The regiment was formed in May 1940 in the British colony of Southern Rhodesia.
The RAR were officially declared the successor to the Rhodesia Native Regiment (RNR) which had existed in World War I from 1916 to 1918, and was granted the RNR's battle honours earned fighting in the East African Campaign.
The RAR were the second-oldest regiment of the Rhodesian Army, after the Rhodesia Regiment which was raised in 1899.

LOL Military marching songs about mundane things is one of my new favourite things this is right up there with that Napoleonic marching song where they talk about how much they love onion rings and how they won't let the Austrians have any.
That real?

I literally thought sweet banana would be a synonym for something. So I researched it and no its literally about a sweet banana. It seems to be usual in this culture to buy your loved one a sweet banana
@Adler Yup and I love it
LOL. To be fair, the Germans also sang about Lili Marlene and Erika.
I like Rhodesian i hate Mungabe😈😈😠
Imperial germans sailors have a song about getting rejected by Polynesian chicks in Honolulu
The RAR was largely our black brothers singing here, they too believed in Rhodesia.
No disrespect intended, but as a Rhodesian born and bred I didn't view any of the blacks as my brothers. Nevertheless, there were many fine black troops in the RAR etc.
@@glendodds3824 When men fight and die alongside you, when they sacrifice their lives against Marxism, it matters not the color of their skin only the intentions in their heart,
@@hellsing507 ZANLA and ZIPRA were cowards, going on a genocide spree against the blacks who didn't buy their communist narrative.
@@hellsing507 actually I fought alongside with the RAR and yeah, we were brothers.
@@glendodds3824 what do you mean? If I was born in Rhodesia I'd have as many natives as brothers as much as I could.
Yo, this song is pure 🔥🔥🔥...

For a minute I thought it was a parody of Rule britannia like Sweet Banana! Banana rules the waves?

"Bananas"
Cheers guys, mugabe is gone! I will buy you all a sweet banana!
@Katherine Sparkes Many citizens of Zimbabwe can afford to pay a trillion dollars for a banana, and some days that's cheap.
Good news, mugabe is gone
Bad News, Ian Smith is still nowhere to be seen.
History of the RAR Regimental March:
Though it is not known who created "Sweet Banana", it is known it was created around 1942 during the Second World War. It reportedly came about after Rhodesian African Rifles soldiers were escorting Italian prisoners of war off a boat in Durban, Natal Province, Union of South Africa. Due to the large amount of bananas being sold there, the soldiers stopped to buy some and composed a march about it. Upon the end of the war, the RAR were located in Egypt and when they were told their Commanding Officer was returning via the Suez Canal, the soldiers lined the banks to salute him and sang him in to "Sweet Banana". At the 1946 Victory Parade in London, the RAR represented Southern Rhodesia and the band played "Sweet Banana" as they approached the parade dais.
Traditionally when it was performed, the soldiers would sing as they marched. When the RAR was disbanded in 1981 following the establishment of Zimbabwe, "Sweet Banana" was performed for the last time as they marched through the streets of Bulawayo towards the ceremony where their colours were laid up. They had originally marched in silence and only performed it in response to hearing a young boy ask his father why the soldiers were not singing.
Be sure to check out John Edmonds’ version. He made covers of many of the Rhodesian Regimental Marches in tribute to them.

Oh Rhodesia! I weep for my lost Country and all the wonderful contradictions such as the RAR that made it so wonderful. 5:38
Now the same types are trying to do to Europe, Canada, US, Australia and New Zealand what they did to Rhodesia and South Africa. The masses are so effing dumb.

@@locobacano9462 and ?
@@locobacano9462 you're racist by saying that they should be officers just because they are black
@@yanmew Thats not what he was saying though. He meant that for most of the bush war and all of the unit's prior history, the rar was not allowed to have black officers.
ruclips.net/video/-SqmYYNH6rA/видео.html here one of the early Black Officers graduates
I mean its not like Rhodesia was not racist, it certainly was. But the government recognized the need for manpower as white Rhodesians began to emigrate out of the country. RLI, Rhodesia Regiment were segregated and Rhodesia was under an apartheid government anyways.
I think Rhodesia if it had not fallen, it would have followed the South African example of their own fall of apartheid. How well the country would have done after that who knows.
