She had the brains and wisdom to never give up (sell) her copyrights to this great song. Bravo Dolly & you all showed them that you are not a dumb blonde!
This is not about comparing versions or somebody's being a hundred times better. This is about appreciating a wonderful song written by Dolly Parton. She has never criticised anybody's cover of her song and countless people have done it. She has at least another 4000 penned songs to her name and there must be a few hundred greats among those. She has always thanked Whitney Houston for her version, never fails to mention it. After, it's just subjective. Dolly's own version or Whitney's are tops.
I loved seeing Dolly sing this to Porter Waggoner, (the inspiration for the song, she broke up with him as a singing partner) on the GOP stage during the tribute to Porter before he died.
Years ago Dolly had a 15 min show, after the nightly news in the mid-west. This was used as her theme song for the show. You knew immediatley she and the song were something special. I'ts not neccessary to compare Whitney and Dolly on this song. They sang in different musical era's so they are gonna be arranged accordingly, back-up s are different etc. Both beautiful and perfect in their own way. RIP beautiful girl.
Love her or hate her (and I just love her - she is a real human being and honest about the work she has done - unlike some), ya gotta respect the talent in voice and writing! She is as American an institution as Marilyn Monroe and Betsy Ross!
Dolly wrote this beautiful song and sings it like a angel!! Whitney did a remake and today Whitney lost her singing voice but Dolly at 65 still has her beautiful voice and still sounds like a angel!..This song will always be the legend Dollys song!!
Dolly and the late Whitney have their own style of singing this song....Whitney sings with full expression which i think is fantastic....Dolly is good for countrymusic type of singing!
My U.S friends, you would be amazed at the reception she got on her last U.K tour, sold out months in advance, possibly the best show I've ever been to, a genuinely gifted woman, your country should be proud of her.
dolly wrote this song to say good bye to her friend Porter Wagner. They sang togather for years, and this is her goodbye,,,,I think it is just beautiful....and so is she
At the peak of Bodyguard's popularity, Whitney's version was the worldwide anthem and is an undeniable success. As a Filipino and not really aware of Dolly's songs, I was suprised to hear this version in a Bette Midler movie. Went out to find it and there it was. While Whitney's rendition is great and iconic, Dolly's was haunting and touching.
This song has been good to Dolly. Wish more people knew she wrote it. But every time a singer makes it big with this song, she getting some money. Now Lin Yu Chun the Taiwanese singer has brought the song to everyone's attention on RUclips.
Its so sad and it is so true. I will always love you no matter what you do to me or say about me. I know you don't mean it. I am sick of everyone telling me stuff about you and sick of everyone just having an opinion. We could have avoided all this if we could have talked. I think Dolly sings this song so beautifully. I hope you will listen to it...
Dolly and I grew up together and "Coat of many colors" is my favorite but this is a close first. She was a great singer, actress, Hey anyone get to Dollywood in Pigeon Forge TN? Worth going to.
Apesar do sucesso com a Whitney, a Dolly Parton verdadeira cantora da musica arrasa, ela é demais, é adoro a Dolly Parton. e Whitney otima tb que vc esteja em um otimo lugar.
No she wrote it in the 1970's after she was ready to leave Porter Wagoner show and did it two times in 1974 and 1982 on both occasion it became number one hit for her. She later had a number 15 hit as a duet with Vince Gill in 1995 of which they won the CMA vocal Event of the Year the following year.
@TheLathanual ...Thanks, I'm a musican, and have been in the buissness for over 35 years, and when it comes to talent, there is no other like Dolly......tw
@cedrickster40, UM, Whitney actually was granted permission from Dolly to sing and use this song. Dolly recorded the song for the musical movie "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas." Mona (Dolly) sings it to Sheriff Earl (Burt Reynolds) after he tells her that he loves her. Both do a good job at singing the song in thier own way. I'm a HUGE country fan, and I like the way Whitney sings it also. And enjoy both singers performing this song.
@jkcsdaddy - Nope was written by Dolly in 1973. She has told numerous interviewers over the years that she wrote it for her one-time partner and mentor Porter Wagoner, with whom she was having a business splitting at the time
@85hisboobear Well, actually, Dolly put it on the Billboard Charts twice. Once around 1971 and again in the '80s. Both times it went to #1. This will always be Dolly's song.
I admit that while Whitney brought a wonderfully new and soulful aspect to this song, nothing compares to the raw emotion Lady Dolly puts into the original version.
@Falcon6977 Sorry for your loss .....take care... remember she is just a breath away..and watching over you always.. her memory will live on in many ways for you.
Whitney herself gave homage to Dolly and said that she took an iconic song and gave her own interpretation to it. What a beautiful song that came from from her decision to venture out on her own, it is amazing how healing money can be. Love you Dolly !!!!!! I will Always Love You !
@Donnysaxman Wrong. They didn't have an affair. She wrote this song because she wanted to get out of his show to be on her own in the showbiz but he wouldn't listen to her. That's when she wrote this song. It was a goodbye to him not an actual lovesong.
for those of you that dont like dolly's version, you do realize she wrote this song. !!! and she has always thanked whitney for making her alot of money, and getting her the grammy for this song, and the oscar for it. !!!!! so i dont think dolly much cares what ya'll think. hahaha
This is my favourite overall 'live' performance of watching Dolly sing this song. She is just the Greatest singer/songwriter/performer ever! Thanks for sharing.
Dolly can sing...Dolly can write music...Dolly has an amazing business head on her shoulders....not bad for a poor country gal...that had second hand clothes and comes from Tennessee... She has Dollywood and brought jobs to her own town....Dolly Parton is an amazing woman....the TRUE lady of Country....Amen to you Dolly your a true inspiration...
She´s one of the most beautiful women I´ve ever seen and definitely the most talented one. She´s amazing!! Her beauty, her voice, her talent and not to mention that stunning body of hers. God, I love this woman. I would marry her right away.
I absolutely love this song sung by Dolly. I even remember the first time I heard it and where I was at the time, in Ridgemar Mall in Fort Worth. I just stopped and listened as did a lot of other people. Thank you for the post and the memories.
well im not het biggest fan but i like her songs and way she sings them het duets with kenny are great and she brings songs written for her (by teh beegee;s and others) with the same power and entousiasm as her own material.. great class.. just a she she playpacks to often al "live: preformances heronly bad part is you aks me.. but who am i..
Well, correct me if I'm wrong all of you who thinkof Whitney. I was of the understanding Dolly wrote this song when her business partner and she parted after many years... But Whitney did take it to another level.
@RileyTennessee , yeah, Dolly gets the money alright, especially how with Whitney's passing and everybody is buying that song again. Dolly didn't have to do thing. She can just sit back and collect.
Dolly is the best female volcalist to ever grace a mic in the history of music......
She had the brains and wisdom to never give up (sell) her copyrights to this great song. Bravo Dolly & you all showed them that you are not a dumb blonde!

Heres the LEGEND that other singers wish they was her!!!

both are just as romantic in their fashions.....

This song has been good to Dolly. Wish more people knew she wrote it. But every time a singer makes it big with this song, she getting some money. Now Lin Yu Chun the Taiwanese singer has brought the song to everyone's attention on RUclips.

Dolly can do it all. Her band rocks so does she. Oh, we know she plays 11 different instruments. It is Dolly's song, not houston
She´s one of the most beautiful women I´ve ever seen and definitely the most talented one. She´s amazing!! Her beauty, her voice, her talent and not to mention that stunning body of hers. God, I love this woman. I would marry her right away.

Kimberly Perry of The Band Perry will be the next new star to do well with this song.
No tengo nada en contra de la señora, de hecho me es grata, pero cometió sacrilegio al cantar una canción para voces únicamnete PRIVILIGIADAS.
Well, correct me if I'm wrong all of you who thinkof Whitney. I was of the understanding Dolly wrote this song when her business partner and she parted after many years... But Whitney did take it to another level.
Me too.. Strange they never did, though.
@siriusminx You are so right....both beautiful in their own way!
@RileyTennessee , yeah, Dolly gets the money alright, especially how with Whitney's passing and everybody is buying that song again. Dolly didn't have to do thing. She can just sit back and collect.
@davortech except that it is actually Dolly's song. She is the original singer and songwriter/composer.
This version gives me chills! Wow!
i didnt know dolly originally sang this song until today, i fail, but i love her version just as much as i love whitney's
@athanguy I couldn't agree more. What a sweet version this is.
@OnlytrueDiva THANK YOU so MUCH !!
Yes Dolly wrote and sung this song originally.
Agreed, but I'd love to hear Celtic Woman cover it.
