Zeronality Zeronality ok, I partly agree and I partly disagree; My first car was an E34 535i, (used of course, picked it up with 78k mi.) By the time I got rid of it (like an idiot) i had put 120k mi. During that time I went thru 2 sets of tires, one transmission, two sets of shocks, front and back, a radiator, a water pump, an oil pan gasket, a headlight and a fender. Mind you, some of these repairs were not because of the built quality of the car but because my youth and inexperience at the time. Meanwhile my brother had a 325i from 1982-83 I believe, and he only put fuel and air on the tires and that thing lasted him almost 320,000mi. After that i bought a brand new camry ( base, manual) and that was the most dependable and boring car I’ve had. From there on I’ve had mazdas, nissans, more Toyota, MB, cadillacs, VW and even Hyundais and I must say the worst I had was a brand new Mazda 3 which was a base model; tranny went out at 7k mi, computer failed twice and rear axle had to be replaced as well (very little moving parts in this car) plain garbage. So I believe it really depends on the class of the car, manufacturer and treatment, few moving parts do not mean least trouble if the manufacturer’s quality is garbage. Precise engineering could be a 50-50 thing, my S-class has asked me for nothing but fuel since new, in contrast my Escalade has taken me to the dealer more than my old e34 did, and it was purchased new as well. :( :(

Back then, BMWs were expensive products made to be purchased. Now they're made to be leased and swapped every 2-3 years so they cut costs to shift more cars to plebs in 320ds.
I have an e34 and the thing has had a tough life but it's so reliable and relentlessly enjoyable to drive. The difference with BMW's of today is they don't have soul maybe this is purely to do with age, however BMW's golden years were back in the days of e30, 34,36,39. Turbos are great for big BHP but an NA straight six or V8 was what BMW stood for.
When I was 13 years old one bloke had one brand spanking new and kept it on his drive made me late form school 100 times...I couldn't get enough of looking at it! Those wheels that design is timeless. Simply the very best propositioned saloon car had ever made. Super timeless! That colour is just a cherry on top.
The BMW e34 is easily the most reliable BMW ever made with many of them on the road today. Nevertheless, many other BMW’s, especially newer BMW’s are also quite reliable. The e34 was a bench mark sedan with class leading safety features, braking distance, and performance figures that put the M5 against the Ferraris and Porsches of the day. It was also featured heavily in pop culture… the two biggest shows of the day Frasier and Seinfeld featured e34s as the main character’s vehicles. It is a perfect harmony of modern technologies mated with classic BMW styling. In Eastern Europe, it was known as the Kamatarka for being vehicle of choice for loan sharks and crime syndicates… if you saw one in your mirror you moved out of its way! However, BMW is lagging behind Mercedes, Porsche, and even Jaguar in offering classic owners a good stock of parts. Many parts become NLA so if you are into classics be mindful of that fact. BMW Classic really only caters to the popular models like e30 and 2002 etc…
1seipai my father bought a new z8 back than and still has it today and I can tell you for what it is it drives shitty, but it is so fucking beautiful. It is more of a look how cool I am car, than a driving Maschine
GanzcastGermany Yes that's what I understand. It's superbly built with aluminium, bespoke switchgear and I think one of the first LED rear lights. I think it took 10 times longer to make than other BMWs at the time but not good to drive, not as good as an E39 M5 but as an investment!
My dad bought an 89 model year 535i back when I was 12. That thing was a beauty and a beast. That was the first time I fell in love .....with a car. My first love was a BMW.
@@Heretic_Wolf Try driving 240++ k/h for any time on the autobahn, there are not that many stretches where there's no speed limit, I drive on them all the time. And 150 m/h is more than fast enough for any sane person. But the effortless acceleration is a real pleasure - and also, I'd say, an extra safety factor when you're pulling on to the freeway or overtaking, anywhere. The E34 passenger compartment also has fantastic acoustics, using just the four basic-issue BMW speakers, BTW, real pleasure to drive while listening to good music.
Mälli Fair true, my first e34 was a blast to drive and thru long distances, I happened to have the 535i and the acceleration was real specially when the time came to overtake big 18wheelers or your usual asshole with a V-tech engine. My current 525i wagon is also good even tho I feel the engine has to work a little harder to drive the car.
Oliver Toronyi I had an E39 for about a year.. a beautiful drive but all the computerised mumbo jumbo made it cut out for no reason. At any time. Apparently, after months of trying everything out and getting a diagnostic kit plugged into it, we discovered it was something called a cam position sensor that wad faulty.. One of the first bmw's to have computerised technology and obviously s prototype. Never again! :(
I disagre, I love a car with a steering wheel that is effortless to operate. It just makes the driving much more smooth and pleasant. Now add some soft dampers, a quiet cabin, and a powerful v6 engine connected to a buttery 6 speed manual transmission... that's a dream car to be honest.

They actually have them in Left Hand drive for the UK. I've met one recently, when delivering a parcel to a man in a residential house. When I was walking to the door, I'm looking at it, looked through the window to make sure it's a proper M5 and then I saw a stick shift 6 speed - I was sure. Then an old man, around 70 years old opened the door. I appreciated the car, we chatted for a few minutes, he said he owned the beauty for around 27 years now, I believe he bought it from new. Had around 200k miles on it, never broken down. It was incredible, dark blue color with white leather interior. E34, mhh. I loved, though for my younger generation, I'm looking to achieve an E39 M5 :)
I had an E34 525tds Back in the late 90's. The engine was a bit to weak for that size of a car, but had no issues for years until the head gasket blew at 300.000km. But I loved the car, great design, great interior. Really a car I miss today
What a beautiful gorgeous machine. The engines back then had a divine noise , the hand made mechanic was simply sharp and steady. I can’t get enough of these cars , absolute beauties.
The best car in series of BMW 1990s. With 2.4 lt engine it can reach up to 240km/h. Love it. In my country tried it so many times that feeling can't explained well
i got a e34 520i vanos 1994 still running so well, so comfortably. and i'm crazy about how the m50 engine roars !! spacious cabin & comfortable seats. really love this one 😍🔥😍
Now they are just a luxury brand for rich businessman or Chinese elite to drive around in. They used to stand for unlimited fun that brings a smile on your face.
In the 70s BMW was on the verge of bankruptcy when they came up with the model that would help pull them through. All car makers except a few have always started business building cars for the masses. Studying brands and how branding is done helps understand why businesses gradually change. Maybe as the German economy grew the car companies thought of making a transition...
Completely disagree, they've just upped their game in terms of cabin appointments and design. They still drive fantastic and are much more comfortable than they used to be. I personally still love Audis more but no German auto manufacturer is slipping right now.
Aristotelis Mitsiou Who cares about the FWD 2 Series Active Tourer? Unlike you people i respect other people who owns a FWD BMW. But yeah most BMWs should be and stay rear wheel drive. Front wheel drive doesn't really suit on a BMW, only on Audi, Volkswagen, Skoda, SEAT, Toyota. Peugeot, Citroën, Renault. any family cars
Yes, but at least you can still get RWD only BMW’s. I have owned two myself, a 1996 325i stick shift, and a 2004 E60 525i auto, which I still drive. Had to know how to drive that 3 Series as it didn’t have traction control.
Martyn H Indeed, though I suspect RWD will slowly die in the BMW range. The 4, 5 and 6 series might get away with it but I'm not too sure about the rest. The new 1 series is another car pulling the RWD plug.
Die hard BMW and Porsche fan. But BMW today is boring same turbo motor in every car and series . I love the older BMWs e30,e36,e46 maybe e92. And love the older 5 series especially e28/e34 and e39s. Such classic design and emotion and build quality. And real S Motorsport Motors
Did drive these M5's and M5Touring many times. friend of mine sold these kind of cars. They still ARE REALLY AMAZING. The feeling when you stepped into this car and turned on the engine...................
Me, I have and still driving both e34 & e39 with 6 cyl engines. My e28 I used to drive for 4 yrs was disposed due to bad rust. All these machines have their own pro & cons. All I can say, the newer the progress, the lesser the 'mechanical driving experience' it became. I can recall, the e28 was the best to churn tight windy hilly roads due to its short wheelbase.

Red Pill Intelligence indeed
@Red pill exactly lol
Modern BMWs are infinitely better made. The whole it's better because its old thing is naive and tbh a bit sad.
When BMW was still BMW.
Modern times, they make cars for much larger audience unfortunatley, but i still love them.
Zack Smith That's why they make shit now?
These comments are a cringefest. Yuck
Michael Farah They still are BMW, but as most companies they have gonne to computers and lowered build quality so they won't last as long
@KAYWEN LI They've probably never driven an old nor a modern BMW LOL
The last of the hand made M5s. Let's have more of these. I'd love to see a review on the Z8!
GanzcastGermany Your father must be delighted at the price increase!
GanzcastGermany Saying fucking means that you hate the BMW Z8 or any cars
E34 M5, the best looking BMW sedan.
And E39 M5
E34 > E38 > E39
E39
Nope E39
Prefer the E39, but this car started it all. Tech and simplicity. Solid as a rock.
Just FYI- The E28 was the first model M5
That is one of the best cars ever built
This is one of my most favourite cars of all time. Just perfect. Thank you for making this video, Matt.
Back when the term "German engineering" meant something!
What the f are you talking about?
it still does lol
Tell me another car that comes close to the current M5. Germans still make the best cars.
Guarantee that if that cat was owned by a normal owner, everything would have broke on it
Back when the M badge meant something and not just cheaply slapped on your average company 520d.
So damn clean
0:26 The hood insulation is off the charts.
My dad bought an 89 model year 535i back when I was 12. That thing was a beauty and a beast. That was the first time I fell in love .....with a car. My first love was a BMW.
Not fast by modern standards but a true driving enthusiasts car which brings a smile unlike the video game cars of today
But fast enough - above 150 mph, who needs faster - and where can you use it, legally? The acceleration is what really counts.
Mälli Fair autobahn
Please, try take an E39 M5 for a test ! We would love to see it :) Thanks for this review :)
It took you a year to try scanning the car? Are you dense?
Nice car! I bet that has great steering feel too. I hate the numb, ultra-light crap that passes for steering in a lot of new cars.
@@AL-SH but does your man agree with that ?
@@kenlee-97 ahahahah =)))))
@@AwesomeMusicDude THANKYOU, my most excellent friend- I'm happy and appreciative of you taking the effort to actually write back to me about my comment, also I just couldn't resist because the comment above thinks the BMW has an V6- !!! LOL!!!.
I love the solid sound of an old BMW door
i have a 2006 e90 330i, and although the build quality is. not as good as this car, the doors still shut with that solid "thunk"
@@edombre4637 This past Sunday I purchased a W140 S class... heaviest doors I have ever touched haha.
@@edombre4637 I had an 06 E53 4.4i. Awesome doors on that thing too.
That's the sound of German superiority, and i'm a brit haha
I had a N plate 1995 in green... this car is the bomb...
RONIN watch it if you haven’t, to see this car in full glory
Except isn't a guy in a Pug keeping up with it?
The one in the film is a fake ;-)
@@mel2401 woman driving BMW..
The Peugeot is a 406 with a 3.0 lt v6 engine which in the real world traffic conditions would be fast enough ....... 😎
@@visionist7 incorrect... they did actually use an M5 for some of the chase scenes and visuals... then it was a 535i M5 clone, and the final crash scene where naturally they sent an old 520i or similar over the edge.
Such an iconic design. Modern BMW's on the other hand are so hideous it hurts my eyes.
Subjective, the current generation BMW 6 series probably the best silhouette BMW has designed in both Coupe form and Gran-Coupe variant
Stop fucking lying. You old people are cringe as fuck.
@@stackzbeats9344 maybe to you, but at least we have taste ;). Seriously though, the modern mega-grilled BMWs are a styling disaster, aimed at the Chinese and American markets, where taste doesn't matter.
Audidude I actually like them, they look like they are making a point
@@Audidude I think that the new styling is globally hated. Even the americans seem to despise the thug like looks of the new BMWs.
I had one of those, and It was an amazing car, I sold it when arrived 345000km, but still running
I just feel love when I see this car. I would rather have this M5 than any Lamborghini or Ferrari. It is just like a mirical❤️
RIP Giorgi Tevzadze
check out his videos guys.
what a georgian legend ❤️🙌🙌
1:30 jesus what a quality sound
I tried to trade my 95 525i for a 95 6 speed m package 540i but it was gone when I got there, ended up with a later model 540i which is awesome but I still kinda miss my old 525i and with the upgrades it wasn't hardly slower. Damn good cars and run forever!
These E34s M5s were hand built. Also, if you look at certain parts, the builders signed their name to the components.
@dsm810 true, someone at the factory etched “A. Hitler” beneath the cam cover on mine. Awesome!
@@redbluesome2829 that's funny...
Best car review I’ve ever seen, love the way he smoothly used humour in the presentation. All the shoots were make sense. In overall, love the review so much that it makes me want to buy the car.
E34, mhh. I loved, though for my younger generation, I'm looking to achieve an E39 M5 :)
whenever i see this car it reminds me Giorgi Tevzadze
The sound from the E34❤️❤️
Now that's how you review a car; Forget costs, stats, trivia - it's all about driving experience and you captured that beautifully.
This is the car I'd have for the rest of my life. Absolutely love it. Thanks for the review and you should do more classics Mat!
I had an E34 525tds Back in the late 90's.
The engine was a bit to weak for that size of a car, but had no issues for years until the head gasket blew at 300.000km.
But I loved the car, great design, great interior. Really a car I miss today
What a car! Seeing an E34 M5 back when it came out must have been mindblowing!
Philipp Klein Herrero but it is E34 M5
Thanks, I didn't pay enough attention! I corrected it :)
Nice glasses Mat, glad you went for those!
Looks way better than todays bloated JELLYBEANS.
Lool for real
2014 BMW 550i, much better looking than this car.
@lg
Yes, good looking, but bad reliability.
better than the 2019 m5? keep dreaming
@@kemalkeza6795 You can't say anything of meaning about the 2019 M5 as it has yet to prove itself (reliability wise).
Love it. In my country tried it so many times that feeling can't explained well
That was my pin up car when I was a kid in the early 90's.

and i'm crazy about how the m50 engine roars !!
spacious cabin & comfortable seats.
really love this one 😍🔥😍
My dad had one. It was childhood most loved piece of art. I know the car has more gadgets that I still remember them all. Lovely vehicle.
BMW really lost their soul by now. they are just a name.
Now they are just a luxury brand for rich businessman or Chinese elite to drive around in. They used to stand for unlimited fun that brings a smile on your face.
What a load of complete nonsense.
In the 70s BMW was on the verge of bankruptcy when they came up with the model that would help pull them through.
All car makers except a few have always started business building cars for the masses. Studying brands and how branding is done helps understand why businesses gradually change. Maybe as the German economy grew the car companies thought of making a transition...
i would't say its just a name. they are one of the best car manufactures! but i can say that they changed the car game back in the days
Completely disagree, they've just upped their game in terms of cabin appointments and design. They still drive fantastic and are much more comfortable than they used to be. I personally still love Audis more but no German auto manufacturer is slipping right now.
Back when front wheel drive didn't exist in BMW's dictionary...
Aristotelis Mitsiou Back when people drive rear wheel drive penises...
first name last name Interesting, but I was mainly referring to the era. No FWD 2 Series Active Tourer to be seen.
Only if everyone could look after their cars like that... 😕
Well, this one is owned by *BMW*
That's why...

Die hard BMW and Porsche fan. But BMW today is boring same turbo motor in every car and series . I love the older BMWs e30,e36,e46 maybe e92. And love the older 5 series especially e28/e34 and e39s. Such classic design and emotion and build quality. And real S Motorsport Motors
this car is what made me fall in love with bmw
Same for me
1:32 that’s feels so good 🥰
Did drive these M5's and M5Touring many times. friend of mine sold these kind of cars.
Thanks Matt. Classic M5.
When BMW made this things they were legend. Not now. 1 series with FWD??? M diesel models??? M with xdrive??? Why BMW???
BMW is now moneyhungry company. Ill take E34 over new 1 series
munney
I can agree with M diesels because they are wicked, but the rest...meh
Whats wrong with an awd BMW? Would you prefer your car to be uncontrollable and overpowered?
I wouldn't mind fwd in the 1 series but any other BMW I would care
This was built during a time when people cared about the driving experience and BMW knew how to
make a BMW. Infotainment systems, indeed!
Omg, my first car was a 320i E34, with the 6 inline cylinders, what a beauty, and that sound when it got high... dreamcar. Then it got complicated.
I drive a 94 530i, it’s superbly engineered and very balanced between smooth ride and sports sedan. Great original audio from 10 speakers and 250 watts
Great car!!
