Vlog 53
This vlog encompasses 3 days of travel. The goal was to get from Luang Prabang, Laos to Hanoi, Vietnam. We started off in Luang Prabang, which is in the north of Laos. We took a train that was supposed to be an hour and a half from Luang Prabang to Vientiane, the capital of Laos, which ended up being over 3 hours.
In Vientiane, we stayed one night at an Airbnb, before taking our bus the next day. However, we still had not received our Vietnam e-visas, even though we had applied 5 business days prior, and they are only supposed to take 3 business days. We ended up paying $80 to expedite our visas, but they still hadn't come in by 4:30 PM. At this point, we had given up on getting to Vietnam in the next few days, as our bus left at 6 PM, and the next bus wasn't until 4 days from then.
Luckily, right as we had given up, the visas came in at 4:35 PM. We quickly mobilized into action. Patricia threw all of our belongings into our bags, and Matt sprinted to a printing shop. The print shop ended up being extremely far, but a nice local let him into her house to print the visas. Once we had the visas secured, we took a taxi and made it to the bus station at 5:45 PM. Miraculously, we made it onto the bus!
The border crossing at Moc Bai land port was relatively smooth, although to cross the border we had to walk over a kilometer on foot through the freezing rain, and the Vietnamese customs agents only stamped us in for 15 days instead of 30 like we were supposed to receive. We were just really happy that we actually made it to Vietnam!
We arrived in Hanoi almost exactly 24 hours later, and were greeted with a super luxurious Airbnb that we only paid $14 a night for!
We hope you enjoy the vlog even though it is super long, and we are excited to show you more of Hanoi over the next few days!

I'm exhausted for you, but everything did work out in the end.... Love you!
Everything worked out well thanks to the kindness of the Lao people and pure luck!
Fantastic share guys . I'm just about to start a big adventure with my eleven year old daughter doing Nepal then Thailand Cambodia veitnam and we'll have to jump into Laos too as Cambodia and veitnam only get fifteen days each on visa so have three days to kill on Laos . I hope to have less stress than you seem to have got but I expect ours like all journeys will.have it's own dilemmas
That’s so awesome!! It really was amazing and worth the stress. Once we got our visa that is 😂😂. Glad you watched the vlog and hope you had/have a great trip with your daughter! Sounds amazing
Love your hair Pat
I'm seriously considering doing a Southeast Asia visit. Id really like to go through Laos and Cambodia, but if that's not feasible, I at least want to go to Vietnam. There's a train that goes from From top to bottom.
Laos and Cambodia is definitely feasible!! Laos was amazing! Vietnam too so you really can’t go wrong haha
You guys went through great challenges to experience in life. You made me anxious as I am going there (from Hanoi to Vientiane) in March. did you go through Bueng Kan, Thailand? Also, can you share the address of the person who printed the visa for you?
Haha we went the other way, from Vientiane to Hanoi! And I have no idea her address, I was in such a hurry that I ran back as soon as she printed it for me! The Lao people are just such great people. Always helpful and very nice! We have not been to Buena Kan Thailand. We crossed the border of Laos and Vietnam at the Cau Treo Landport! Let us know if you have more questions though because we'd be happy to help!
if you apply for the evisa, do you have to give the exact date you enter vietnam? or doens't it matter?
Yes, exact date you enter and leave Vietnam!! We got into issues with this 😂
where does the bus go down to?
The bus went from Vientiane to Hanoi!!
@@patriciaandmatt i completed my backpacking trip last august yup it went down somewhere in hanoi
Helped me to make the decision of taking flight instead
