I absolutely loved the original TV series All Creatures Great and Small as a young girl. Firstly, I love animals, and it followed the life of a vet in the 1930s and 1940s. The North Yorkshire scenery was beautiful, people lived in cute, little cottages, the women’s fashion was feminine and stylish and the men wore tweed suits. There was a real sense of community too. That’s when and where I should have been born - I’ve always thought that I was born too late, as this modern world doesn’t suit me at all.

So good. I love that you are unapologetically leaning in. You are reminding me of those childhood books/movies that just fed my soul. Most of them also centered on cozy families and spaces, timeless occupations and hobbies, natural beauty. At 60, I am inspired to recapture some of that childhood wonder.

I was a child in the 70's and 80's and grew up watching old movies on a Sunday afternoon on an old black and white portable tv. Films from the 30's/40's were my favorites. I also love watching any period drama and especially All creatures great and small ( l can even recognize the makers of some of their tableware!). I love charity and antiques shops but it is so easy to overspend when it's all such a "bargain". Also the vintage online community can often be about look at what I bought! So I'm very much looking forward to your membership and especially the getting a vintage lifestyle on a budget.

I grew up with Laura Ingalls Wilder books. Little House in the Big Woods and the more well known, Little House on the Prairie. Those snug little cabins with the fire in the fireplace, nestled in the middle of the great forest and surrounded by snow. I have loved winter ever since. A small space with little, but everything you need to be safe and comfortable, with the people you love around you. But, I am also inspired by my Nana's house and her decor from the 40's and 50's. Sometimes is seems odd to have a nostalgia for a time I never knew, but it also seems perfectly natural.

Iv watched Goodnight Mr.Tom countless times. Never get tired of it and it really does bring to the screen the atmosphere of the 1940s. John Thaw, who plays the title character is sadly missed. That film though is a real gem

Living in America and probably close to twice your age, I was also influenced by some of the same things as you. I read the Borrowers book when I was probably around 7-8 years old. I loved it and it sparked my imagination around all things miniature. Another book that influenced me was The Boxcar Children. I loved how the children made a home from found objects in an abandoned boxcar. My daughter introduced me to The Secret World of Arrietty.
After my husband passed away and my children moved out on their own, I now have a small 1930's bungalow. When I spoke with the realtor about what I was looking for in a place, I told her I wanted a grandma house and I found the perfect one. I am now working to make this place cozy and welcoming to everyone that visits. Your videos inspire my as I work on my home and I just really enjoy the content you create. Great job!

I loved the borrower's book's as a child, the borrower's aloft, the borrower's afield, the borrower's afloat etc. Heidi was my favourite, l could smell the hay in the loft as l read. I went to Switzerland as a young teenager, and it reminded me so much of were Heidi would live.

I grew up watching Dad's Army and have now got the DVD boxed set to dip into occasionally. As a child I just regarded it as a sitcom but now I realise it's also a rare and unique insight into everyday life at the time. It was made in the late 60s and early 70s so the 40s were fresh in the minds of most people involved, so that gives it a lot of authenticity as a bit of social history.

Your home would be my dream home. I live in a more modern home, which I don’t care for, but it is what is available for me. I have always loved the beauty and nostalgia and the architecture of older homes such as yours so you are living my dream! Isn’t it funny how that works out so inside my home I tried to make it look very Victorian and I shop at the thrift stores a lot and pick up a lot of old pieces so I can feel like I have my own little oasis and happy place. I’m glad I’m not the only one that lived vicariously through TV shows Beatrix Potter and so on… And I’m 61 now I think I’m finally getting there with my decor. I love your channel and I’m so happy I found it. Thank you for all the hard work you put into them. Many blessings.🙏❤️

The absolute choke hold that both the novels and the Kevin Sullivan miniseries of Anne of Green Gables has had over my entire life cannot be underestimated. I absolutely decorate like a cross between Anne and Marilla. I even got to meet Megan Follows once, and my inner little girl wept with joy.

I loved this video Hannah! And your house is so sweet. I think my favourite things about your house are 1. The cooker! 2. The pantry and 3. The fireplace.
As for me, my personal influences would be as follows.
Anne of Green Gables...oh how I love the gentle aesthetics of Marilla Cuthbert, making jams and pickles and raspberry cordial in her cosy kitchen whilst looking out into her orchard of Apple trees and pretty blossoms 😍 and yes, I totally want that to be me one day.
Call the Midwife definitely evokes those fuzzy feelings of nostalgia and simpler times, taking joy from the little things in life that make up the fabric of our being. I do love the quintessential British influences of Paddington Bear, Wallace and Gromit and Beatrix Potter too. But, being German born and having spent much of my childhood there, was also influenced by the Scandinavian childrens programs such as Pippi Longstocking (who wouldn't have loved living in her colourful house) The Moomins and Nils Holgersson.
Like you, I am a maxinalist, preferring cosy cottagecore and snug spaces. I find open plan and minimalism very cold and uninviting.
As for my plans for my home this year I also have to work around the fact that I dont live in Green Gables surrounded by Apple trees, but in a suburban area..however that doesnt mean I cannot make the inside of my house to my liking. Projects for this year include a 1930s inspired downstairs toilet makeover, and a downstairs hallway refresh with panelling and wallpaper and lots of art and quirky things to look at. Main inspirations will be 1930s/1940s, a touch of Marilla, and a generous sprinkling of Practical Magic! ❤

I grew up and lived in houses well over a hundred years old, until my current house, which we've been in for twenty years now. I love my house because hubby and I make any home we live in a haven, but I do miss the big, more decorative woodwork. I really miss the large window stools (the ledge that sits at the base of the window). More modern homes do not have them. Older houses the stool is large enough that you can sit small plants on them to catch the sun. Or cats can lay on them when the windows are open to peruse their kingdoms. It's on our list to add to our home, we just haven't gotten there yet!

I love your stair railings. Have you thought of gel staining them a different colour and just changing the fittings? You'd save a fortune. Those wooden railings are so beautiful and hard to come by.
Thanks for the recommendations. I was trying to place a film I watched as a child and loved It's the original Borrowers!!
I bought my 1940s home end of may 24. It was falling apart and needed urgent repairs. It was all I could afford and I love it so much. So far New roof, rewiring, cladding to cover the fibro. I live in rural alpine Aus and have cows as neighbours.
I'm currently taking my time painting inside. Its all in Dulux Heritage sage green.
My biggest job 2025 will be the book room. I've never done wallpapering before and will have a go. I just purchased some rustic pine bookshelves can't wait for them to arrive. I've got books piled up everywhere.
    Sylvia ☺️

Firstly, weird is great. I used to be a Wallace, but certainly now a gromit. I grew up watching a lot of films with Deanna Durbin, I can even match the one raised eyebrow 😅 Victoriana and 1940s is certainly my era's, from knitting/crochet to rich colours, dark green, wine red. Plans for my house isn't too much as we did a lot in the first year we lived here. In our second year raised beds for veggies/fruit will be the next challenge, I saw challenge as I seem to have the ability to kill hardy plants. Frugal is another thing and finally, being more mindful. As I'm medically retired I need to concentrate on us as a family with our pets, our no 1 priority. Slow paced and eventually living in a cottage, I want my last move to be no 33.. my last one now. A rescue sanctuary would be amazing. Thanks Hannah! P.s it is pronounced ghibli with the g sounding as a J ❤

My house was built before 1742 when it was painted on a map. But we have no idea when before that. It was probably 2 cottages and a small barn when it was put up. I always, always wanted to live in a cottage. I was born and grew up on a main road near the centre of Coventry, so nothing like my dream. But my Nan (paternal) owned a small farm on the outskirts of town which I adored and I was there as often as I could be. When I was a child dad had an allotment there so we spent most weekends there. School holidays I’d go stay for a while and help with haymaking, and once I could get that far on my bike I was always there. The house was big, 3 stories and a cellar. Full of antique furniture and wonderful old things. Yet the ridge of the roof was missing so it rained in all over the place and was rotting things. It didn’t matter. I loved it. My other Nan lived on a 2 up, 2 down, outside loo, no bathroom little Victorian house in the city centre, but she had a good eye for nice antique glass and china which she found in junk shops after the war. These 2 wonderful women, chalk and cheese though they were, have always been my inspiration. I mix modern in with my old. I don’t mind that. But my dining table was my great grandmother’s. My sideboard and China cabinet and lots of pretty chins things a pretty old glasses were my other Nan’s. I have bought at antique auctions and yet my beautiful brass bed is a reproduction design called the Austin from And So To Bed. We are high tech because it is our work. But we don’t have a TV.
My literary inspiration is Rupert Bear and The Famous Five. My goodness both live in perfect cottages with striped flannelette pyjamas and feather filled eiderdowns. I still have a Rupert annual every year and look straight for the Christmas story at the end which will most probably feature Rupert in his PJs on or in his bed (so cosy) and with a gift filled stocking hanging on the end of it. Those pictures are wonderful.
I’m a carer for my mum who lives in a small barn conversion in my garden. I have a busy job and some health issues knocking me down at the moment. But sat here next to the inglenook fireplace with the wood burner doing its thing and the cat asleep in front of it, all is well, and slow, in the world.
No major plans, we are having some windows replaced and some repaired shortly. Apart from that we are trying to recover from the expensive job of creating mum’s retirement home!

My first two movies in a theater were The Nine Lives of Thomasina (a Disney cat movie set in Scotland) and the original Mary Poppins. They were both set in the Edwardian era and I've also been influenced by British tv comedies (1970s - 1990s), Masterpiece Theatre and Ghibli films. I rent an apartment but my furniture is vintage plus a Victorian wash stand. I've thought of my home as cozy eclectic. I've always been a Gromit. Just watched their new film on Netflix.

The TV shows that most influenced me, my home and garden were The Good life and the 1940's house. A place absolutely loved to visit was St Fagans near Cardiff, with all the beautiful old buildings, in particular a 1940s farmhouse and some little miners' cottages. They felt like warm and safe homes, solid and reassuring. I particularly loved the rag rugs and an elderly curator there actually showed me how to make them, which started me off on a colourful creative journey for years. A children's book, which I read many years ago, and is currently inspiring a new garden project is The Secret garden.

You basically talked about my most coveted and precious childhood influences and everything that still inhabits the most "me" part of my mind😂 You mentioned pretty much everything that inspired me most except for: The stop motion films of Jane Hissey's "Old bear" stories, the "Postman Pat" claymations, "Believe" (a wonderful movie about a handbuilt house for fairies, "The Labyrinth", the old stop motion films of Sylvanian families, the illustrated "My naughty little Sister" books and the 'Indian in a Cupboard' movie and books. But you got about everything else on point! People often compare my room to Howl's bedroom. It feels like a mix between an old library, antique toyshop and the house of a world travelled, old wizard that collected treasures from all of his adventures through time. I think we share the same kind of longing for a wholesome, peaceful and whimsical life in old time England❤ You are much closer to living it than I am but I am doing my very best to fulfill my dreams with in the limitations I face. And I am mostly very content and happy even though I am objectively poor, stuck in a tiny room without being able to leave for 13 years ongoing, am severely disabled, chronically ill and in never ending physical pain stuck in a pretty much useless, deteriorating and grossly malfunctioning body. But my mind and fantasy keep me going. The remnants of all these childhood memories lifting my spirits when I create a kinder world for myself in my head❤

For me, David the Gnome was hugely influential. I don't know if you had that in the UK but it aired on a network called Nickelodeon in the US, which was (and still is) a network for children. It had many of the same features that you discussed: an older (but spry!) couple living in a cozy house in the middle of the forest, with animal companions, and the occasional run in with slightly-threatening-but-not-intelligent-enough-to-be-genuine-threats trolls. It had major cozy cottagecore vibes, but also adventure, and just overall whimsy. It was enchanting. I can't wait to show it to my own children someday.

Have you watched The 1940s house? It's on RUclips but was filmed about 2001. A family volunteered to spend 9 weeks living in a 1940s house. You'll love it. I love your channel and ... Wallace and Gromit. I'm a Gromit. Keep your posts coming 😊😊😊

That is a great show. I was fascinated by it for a lengthy period of time after I watched it. Seeing them triumph through so many struggles helps you visualize just how difficult life was for people back then.

Today, I bought nine super cheap pictures from a store (by the way, my experience was horrible because the interior was chaotic and looked like a very dirty garage). I’ve already put them on the walls, and the interior has been automatically transformed; it looks better and cozier now-all for just 40 pounds.

We live near a lake in the suburb of Kingsley in Western Australia. We don’t walk to the lake as it’s surrounded by bush with snakes including Tiger snakes that are vicious. While other snakes will disappear when the feel the vibrations of your footsteps, tigers will stay and fight so it’s a no no. However on hot days the ducks fly over to our home and swim in our pool. We have birds who sit on our pool fence and dive into the pool to keep cool. At the end of our street we have a delight park with a wooded area of gum trees. It’s delightful to walk the dog there and of course children love to play Aussie football kick to kick. Families picnic there and dog owners gather to chat with each other. We are fortunate that our street, including our home, 22:03 have beautiful gum trees which shade the street and our home. Birds make their home there but the crows and parrots love to throw the gum nuts down on our colourbond roof which sounds like gun shots. We accept that as this street feels so much like a country street in a country town in WA.

I just noticed i have the same plate as yours (the one in the plate rack) It was my Mum's ❤ We also have a 1940s inspired kitchen, which we love. My husband and i love everything 1940's, and i really enjoy your channel. I too think you could overdo the house, but doing so could lose some of its charm. I recognize that plate as well, I know that it was either part of our cottage furnishings or my aunt in law has one of them. I live in Canada and we inherited a lot of old china from my parents in law. We renovated our in-laws old cottage and a lot of mismatched plates ended up being donated to local charities, simply because I had so much china that I had received from my mother and grandmother that I just had to start passing things along. Anyway, I love this channel Hannah. I really enjoy spending time with you and it’s such a pleasure to see this old plate.

I too am a studio ghibli fanatic. Got both my kids hooked too. Loved Beatrix Potter books as a kid and the series they made with Niamh Cusack was beautiful and again, made my kids watch it as little ones.
I adored wind in the willows books, especially the winter chapter when mole gets lost and badger finds him and takes him to his cosy underground home.
Also love the brambly hedge book series.
So many things you mentioned I've loved for years too, goodnight Mr Tom and Raymond Briggs. Absolutely love them all.
My Grandma was a huge influence on me and even though I don't have a grandma core style, I'm definitely a cosy led maximalist. Obsessed with history docs, sewing, blankets and tea, definitely all her doing ❤😂

I would fixate on the wallpaper, just be thankful that everything hasn't been covered with tons of Aertex. I took down all my lathe and plaster ceilings to get rid of it. Which is about the messiest DIY you can do. As it brought down 50 years of accumulated loft black dirt as well.

I am definitely a Grommet! But I came here to say ( meant to say on one of your other vids) but the way you speak about Japan and Japanese inspiration is how I have felt about England since I was a young girl growing up in the States in the Midwest. It may sound silly or weird but I have ALWAYS somehow felt like I belonged in England. Maybe it’s part of my English ancestry 🤷‍♀️ Now I KNOW i am a hopeless romantic and I romanticize EVERYTHING and I KNOW England is NOT the same England during the time period I would have loved which is anywhere between the 17th century to the 1900 and yes I KNOW there were HORRIBLE things ppl had to endure back then especially the poor ( which is what I would have most likely been) but life has been and IS REALLY HARD SO PLEASE JUST LET ME HAVE MY DREAMS! 💭 🥰 I am a total Anglophile and Have passed that down to my youngest daughter who is 32 and she was supposed to get to go to England when she graduated university but then the stupid pandemic hit and they never got to go. She worked so hard to earn that trip with her grades, and it broke my heart when she didn’t get to go. We still hope maybe someday! But for now I will just dream about Jane Austin, and Beatrix Potter and Brambly Hedge and will forever wish I had a beautiful British accent 😂. Love your channel and your warm cozy home ❤ I had more to say but this was already too long lol ty if you have taken the time to read this, and if you never do, I understand 😉 P.S. Love Call to Midwife also I grew up being extremely close to my grandmothers and especially my paternal grandmother because my grandfather passed away when I was 3 1/2 years old. I spent loads of time with her and spending the night with her and we would always watch classic film that came on Saturday mornings, and she would tell me all about old Hollywood and all about the old movies and I became a huge fan of silent film at a very young age. ❤

I loved all creatures great and small and love the new series. Anything from Jane Austen or the Brontes. When i was young i loved to watch the old classic films with Betty Davis, Barbara Stanwich, vivian Leigh etc. they always looked glamorous. I just love Wallace and Gromit, (I'm more Gromit). For me Christmas Day is watching them. My mum who was young during the 40s used to talk to me what life for her was like then. Which was hard, not as glamorous as sometimes pictured. But she always talked of the comardery and freindships among people was like no other. Everyone helped each other. Which unfortunately i see less and less these days.

Look forward to seeing what you do next! If you're ever visiting further south, there's a lovely open air museum in the Chilterns that has a 40's/50's prefab all decorated as it would have been with a victory garden and an Anderson shelter round the back 😍 it's gorgeous, I think it was actually on an episode of call the midwife in the first season! I like the quirks that old houses have and it makes me sad when people don't appreciate them and try to cover them up or modernize them too much.
I feel like my asygetic leanings are a bit more victorian/edwardian. I think this comes more from real life experiences than media.
My mom really likes old houses so we went on a lot of tours of historic homes when I was a kid.
My grandparents live in an old house, I can't remember when I was built but it was somewhere around 1900, and when they moved in in the early 1970s, they didn't decorate with what was fashionable at the time, they went for vintage reproduction. At that time vintage reproduction was edwardian era. So the house is furnished a bit like when it was built probably.
And reason 3 is the movie Meet Me in St. Louis, I always loved their house.
When I eventually get my own place I'd love a sort of victorian witchy cottage vibe. I also love the stories and illustrations of Jan Brett and Beatrix Potter.
