I am so very grateful to you for speaking out against unnecessary consumerism. I am 70 years old and have been in and out of debt for all my adult life because I never questioned why I was buying things. It is only very recently that I have had a sudden understanding of how I have been the perfect consumer all these years and have astounded myself with the realization of how manipulated I have been to living a life I really do not respect or want to live. I would have no debts, no mortgage and have lived a comfortable life for 40 years now! lol. I hope my comment supports anyone who reads it in starting to question consumerism. Again, thank you, for speaking out. ❤
I definitely agree with you. Hannah has made me realise that I have been the perfect consumer. I’m moving soon due to divorce and will definitely have to watch what I spend on something don’t really want or need. I’m 66 this year
Thanks! This was such a good video, thank you so much for making this video. It makes me feel good about the work this community is doing to make, do, mend and thrift! Thank you!
I work 35 hrs a week, and that is enough. People don't acknowledge that work also affects non-active work time. I try and sleep 8 hrs a night to feel good and be productive at work. I get up 1.5 to 2 hrs before work to prep for work. I spend Sunday meal prepping for work. So 35 hrs paid but also many hours related unpaid to still struggle.
I’m American but work for a tech company that has international employees. We asked our CEO based in Amsterdam if he would consider a four day work week. He said idk if it would be better to work 4 ten hour shifts a week. He totally missed we were asking about a reduction for total hours.😂
Fun fact: in America, certain labor regulations like 8 hour shifts don't apply to jobs in the domestic realm such as caring for disabled or elderly people. I've worked multiple jobs which required at least one, but sometimes up to four, 15 hour shifts per week. Those jobs were absolutely awful and I can't imagine working those shifts 7 days a week
Fellow NHS worker here. I work for NHS England and I agree we are like yourselves expected to meet the highest expectations and standards but are severely lacking in resource meaning we are doing 3x the amount of work we used to do for the same wage. It really does need looking at as they can't continue to expect fantastic results when they keep cutting funding
You all deserve a 5000% increase in wages. I dread the day when we lose our NHS but I'm sure we eventually will as that's what the government would prefer. Hats off to every one of you. Xxx
When I said I don’t check my work email when off the clock and was given a look that screamed What. Then was asked why. Really? I’m on my personal time.
One of my favourite books is "How to be Idle" followed by "How to be Free", basically manifestos for more relaxed living, not stressing about striving, just bring happy and aiming for a good work-life balance. Something I follow to this day.
A business is a team effort, an it is such a slap in the face when you and your team are working butt off for minimum wage to make a business successful and then a couple of managers get thousands in bonuses and you ‘might’ get a thank you. If I was a boss and could afford to give a few people large bonuses id rather give all my employees a smaller one.
enjoyed this video, like hearing about the history in your videos. Over the past few years I have been lucky be to able to cut my hours at work, going from 5 to 4 days per week, it has made all the difference. Life is very short.
Thank you for your breakdown of the situation that is happening in your job. I think back to how stories of workers in the Alexander Smith Carpet mill in Yonkers would be working 50-60 years. The kids started working before they were 10. All of this changed, like you said in the Depression. The work was 12 hours and day and on Saturday 6 hours with Sunday off. During the war effort it went to 12 hours swing shifts as they had converted the looms for naval bunk beds and hammocks. You can't imagine how hurtful it is to me 15:22 to have people now criticize those people as being lazy and unproductive just because they didn't have a car or refrigerator or tv set or ultimately living as cushiony lifestyle as the complainers.
I think it was John D Rockefeller who said " we don't want a nation of thinker's, we want a nation of workers". If you look into the life story of Kellogg, he was rather a strange character. Henry Ford produced war materials for Germany in WW2, it's always about money. I hate the fact that people are just seen as a resource now, it's disrespectful. I used to work for the NHS as a nurse in the 70's, I'm horrified to see what's happened to it.
This was such a good video, thank you so much for making this video. It makes me feel good about the work this community is doing to make, do, mend and thrift! Thank you!
Very interesting but I have to add that, as a self-employed person until I retired (yay!), my hours weren't always in balance either. I think the newly self-employed should be aware of succumbing to guilt and peer pressure and working longer than they have to so they don't look "lazy" or "entitled" for having a shorter work week than their friends. (Maybe friends should be in quotes too, lol).
A great point! And on my journey to (hopefully) self employment, I fear this greatly, that I won't be able to effectively manage my time and I'll just work constantly 😅❤
You produce informative and with humour videos. . We’re in the deep of winter in Canada. So glad I found you. Your interview with Diane shiffer was where I started. Love her too, as I know you do as well.
Well presented. I have chosen to live semi off grid, and remote to be able to work part time, I have Fridays off. It is worth the 40minutes commute to work.
Ford also knew the more leisure time and increased wages would mean more demand for purchasing his cars. That is as people had more leisure they wanted to go out rather than staying home.
I absolutely love your channel, Hannah. It is so nice to know there are people out there who think like me and share similar values. Your videos keep getting better and better. Thankyou for all the content you create. ❤
8 hours work (hahahahahah, I wish, there’s always more than that) 8 rest, 8 recreation. So where do we fit in 4 hrs commute due to the state of public transport, sorting out ‘life stuff’ that seems to pile up endlessly, eating, cooking, personal care, exercise, medical care, caring for others, etc. we need at least another day in each day. I do well if I get 6 hours sleep, mostly it’s 4. Exercise and any nonsense along those lines went out the window long ago. All the things we’re told to do to replenish ourselves etc, no time. It’s crawl to work, crawl home, fulfill obligations, crawl to bed, start again and pretend I’m grateful. I want to enjoy the people in my life but I never have the energy. If I carve out the time to see them It’s at the expense of something or someone else and I’m always the one at the bottom of the list. It’s turning me into a bitter old crone. I’ve no idea how anyone else is coping but I’m certainly not.
Well said! Working to live is a much better philosophy than living to work. Trouble is, the World's economies are all run to continually increase their GDP to pay for the services people require and employers want increase their profits - this means workers are pressured to work longer for poorer wages and benefits - it's a cycle we somehow need to break.
This is the common media narrative, but the reality is that the management level is also chronically understaffed. This pushes tasks that should be done by admin or management staff onto frontline staff, which exacerbates the underresourcing problem.
We have choice to consume or not to consume. However has our productivity really increased? In Australia we have constant demands from unions for more wages yet little increase in productivity. Many employees do not want to return to the office yet expect the same wages/salary. How do you then measure their productivity?
The choice is thing is not that simple, actually. We have a choice to some point. Productivity has zero to do with sitting in office. And you measure the value they bring, not how hard it is to get things done.
You measure productivity by what is produced, not by ass-in-chair hours. What your question asks is how do you know whether it’s taking long enough to produce or whether there are gaps where you can shove in more production by adding more responsibilities to any given worker (presumably without a commensurate rise in pay). It’s the common underlying assumption that nobody else is busy unless you see them being busy, which is just rude.
Try the Japanese work ethic! Luckily it doesn’t affect me as I don’t work in an office . As you must go for meals and drinks after work! Even if you don’t want to ! I work in vintage fashion so we just do what we want. But if we go on holiday we have to bring food gifts back to say thank you for letting me having a holiday. A small sacrifice I don’t mind . Plus my dog comes to work with me "

Blimey. You need to change company. Where I work they actively forbid reading work emails in your own time.

I try to cut out quite a bit this year that's unnecessary. Its hard but will be rewarding
Schools were invented so the kids could be moulded into the next workforce and both parents be the current workforce
True, and to make sure they get the right indoctrination.

@@katemarie4667 Oh my goodness Kate, I am EMOTIONAL over this 😭 thank you
Fantastic video. I really liked how book 'Four thousand weeks' spoke about time is seen now vs in long gone times.
I really enjoy your videos, your channel is great!
Everything is deteriorating now though because of the constant push for growth and not maintaining anything

Seven days a week, fourteen hours a day. Sounds like the film industry.
Haha I bet! 😂😮
Interesting Hannah 😊
Yes we have plenty to change in how our work shapes our reality... Unions help somewhat but there is so much to do to make it better.
And what is it all about giving the highest earners, company cars? That’s never made sense to me😂
Golden handcuffs. You get stuck in your stuff
Nhs would do better with less managers and pen pushers lets be honest
Agreed!
Problem is most NHS workers become really lazy and take on a feeling of being ‘hard done by’ within months of starting in their roles.
This is the common media narrative, but the reality is that the management level is also chronically understaffed. This pushes tasks that should be done by admin or management staff onto frontline staff, which exacerbates the underresourcing problem.

Do you HAVE to, or is it just the norm? Would you get fired for not bringing in food?
That’s ridiculous
Meanwhile Elon Musk promotes working 90 hrs a week haha
Are you a history teacher, what do you do?
I work in Bereavement services, my degree was in psychology ❤❤
@ your so smart❤️
