    Oblivion Durex photo in the thumbnail posted to Reddit by u/SoCalCoaster521 . Original source unknown. Also, I have no intention of shaming people over condom usage/promotion. Safe sex should be promoted and nobody should feel ashamed for talking about the subject. Apologies if the condom segment came across that way; it was more about expressing bewilderment at condoms being used to promote a roller coaster.

    Merlin is a VERY Marketing driven company. The CEO at the time of all this, Nick Varney, was the Alton Towers Marketing director when Nemesis opened, and his entire ethos was around USPs and driving press coverage for the parks.
    Alton Towers in particular had a period, about 2007 to the early 2010s, where they were really aggressive with PR stunts, and there were multiple a year. A few others not mentioned here include announcing plans for a ‘Babycoaster’, installing security devices to stop kids wearing lifts to cheat height restrictions, ‘cloud seeding’ to prevent bad weather, developing a ‘guaranteed stay-down breakfast’ for guests in the hotel and finally sticking a load of underwear models on Rita to ‘test bra support’.
    It was a wild time to be an enthusiast 😂

    The thing to understand with Thorpe Park is it’s not a family park and doesn’t market itself as one. Because Merlin own both Thorpe and Chessington and they are only a few miles apart they concentrate on the family market at Chessington and the teen plus market at Thorpe. This means Thorpe has a totally different vibe than the average theme park.

Like Chessington still has rides for quite young guests but is mainly in the middle ground of the 3 southern Merlin parks be ahse you have LegoLand which caters for those young guests. Also the fact you do get alot of guests who bring their little kids along and get annoyed when they can't get on the bigger rides they do need some rides to go on but even then certain guests get annoyed there isn't enough for young guests, coming from someone who used to work at Thorpe Park. Also the fact is while it is a lids ride my time working on the Flying Fish, a good 50-60% of the guests were teens or older (not including parents with small children).

    • @WhaddonSnep
      @WhaddonSnep 9 месяцев назад +8

      @@ThemeParkCrazy Agreed. Th13teen is a good themed attraction and coaster, but it's biggest cock-up was how heavily it was being promoted spookier than it was. and also dubbed a 'psychocoaster' once. I think another major reason for this was how much Merlin at the time were pushing for a dark aesthetic to their rides around then. 13 released the year after Saw, and two years before The Swarm (another Thorpe Park ride, a wing coaster themed to an insectoid alien race abducting humans whilst causing the end of the world. It also being 'the world's first ride to have an original single for it).
      One other big thing of note for it, was that Th13teen can be seen as a somewhat poor replacement for the legendary Corkscrew, the park's first coaster, and the first double inversion coaster for the UK and Europe (the first being the still running Revolution at Blackpool Pleasure Beach.). So seeing an original thrill coaster being replace by a family coaster is a huge let down.

    Nemesis Inferno still has the world record certificate in the station to this day. It is seen as funny over here but is definitely weird. Around the late 2000s to early 2010s, Merlin Entertainments exclusively built dark themes on their coasters which they probably should have avoided for 13, although the drop track is the best I have experienced.

    This was so interesting to see! I'm British and never really realised that what I grew up seeing here was so unique to here I guess. To me, I think the marketing here is a play on shock factor a lot of the time. These theme parks (especially Alton Towers) play on the "anything can happen, prepare for the unexpected" trope, and the juxtaposition of some of this advertising is just an extension of that. I will say that Alton Towers also seems to struggle a bit with balancing its more extreme rides with the height limits placed on the park by surrounding town and city planning permits, which has led to some of its creative development (and I think one of the reasons for Oblivion going underground to get the full height of the drop(?)). Regardless, loved the video and can't wait to experience some 6 flags TX later this year :D

    I don't know how the first "most naked people on a coaster" record came to be.
    But I know how subsequent ones happened. They said "We can't allow for any other country to steal this record from us", and so they one-upped the previous record. Not that anyone else would have attempted to break it to begin with...
    But in that instance, the term "dangling coaster" (shoutout to who once went under the name "GP2Enthusiast") gets a wholly new meaning... 😏

    I do want to also specify that the nudity record was beaten at night, during a scheduled closed event. This is confirmed with Grand National, and although I don’t think it was the case for Green Scream, they did it to raise money for Southend Hospital.
    Oh and the people that did the Grand National record have been doing things like this for over 60 years. They have weekend stuff nearly every week, and one annual weekend trip since 2007, where they took the record in 2019. They’ve also been to Alton towers where they reserved the place and had activities such as swimming and socialising for a weekend, and did so in 2022.

    I did one of the Th13teen scare rooms in 2010 (your footage is from that year, not 2008!) and had the tap trick pulled on me. I asked my friend if they had left the tap on… and found that girl behind the shower curtain!! There was an entire corridor designated for scare rooms, so that other guests wouldn’t be disturbed and so that guests who paid extra for the scare rooms were together. The actors would go from room to room until 12am (or until you chickened out and put the door on the sign!). One of the craziest nights in the hotel… and I’ve had a lot of them there 😂
    In other years they used to smash mugs, wreck the room interiors and then during closed season they would refurbish the rooms.

    The best market campaign we’ve had for a rollercoaster in the UK is definitely the one for the updated version of Nemesis that opens this year that started with the head of a fictional Private military company called the Phalanx, who were previously featured in the somewhat short lived mini drop tower Nemesis: sub terra and (I think) the scare maze Sub Species, high jacking the park’s 2022 fireworks display. Where at the end of the display’s final night the head of this company showed up on video basically saying there was something wrong with Nemesis while people who had won a competition to be the last riders were being escorted up to the ride as test subjects and the video ended with this person saying “Goodbye, Nemesis”. Once people got up to the Nemesis side of Forbidden valley there was various actors dressed as soldiers and scientists in hazmat suits who were inspecting the area, there various tents dotted around where actors would walk out with samples or looking like they’d been injured by something. After that people who had signed up for updates on Nemesis received various emails and videos that were meant to look like they had been leaked from someone who worked for the Phalanx that showed what was going on “behind the scenes” including the new track, which in the story of the ride is a cage holding the Nemesis monster down, being transported by an armoured convoy. They also did various things throughout last season as well such as opening a viewing platform and reopening Nemesis: sub terra which had an opening ceremony hosted by the guy from the video from the previous year’s fireworks video. After this various videos and emails kept getting sent out including one where the head of the phalanx is visiting their base at Alton towers and is dragged away and likely killed off screen presumably by Nemesis. This part marketing has recently come to an end with the park announcing the rides new logo and name “Nemesis reborn”

    @ThemeParkCrazy I would love to see an updated video on your top 25 favorite roller coasters you’ve ever written. It’s been two years since you’ve done a video like this, and several new roller coasters have come out, so I would love to know where your opinion stands on your favorite roller coasters. Love your videos and keep up the great work!

    I don't think it was a direct ad for a theme park but I think it was for a type cheese in a sandwich and it was this elderly couple that then went a roller coaster and the guy said at the end " what sort of cheese was that" 😂

    The center part of Alton towers park is a large wooded valley with many nooks and cranies and very little supervision, they play the "If you go down in the woods today" song a lot especially round scarefest, supplying 'rain jackets' on site is not the stupidest idea they've ever had, we'll leave that for the fanta sponsorship

    First off alot of that is interesting. First one was funny was the Fanta one. The Thorpe park commercial made it seem like something differnt then a family park. Also for the condoms well I have no words. Reason why parks here in the us can’t do that is due to sponsorships, etc

  • @bretton_woods
    @bretton_woods 9 месяцев назад +1

    We may not have the fastest, longest, tallest, most thrilling coasters, but a lot of that is down to restrictions in height (alton towers) or space (blackpool pleasure beach...and pretty much everywhere else TBH). Only Flamingo Land doesn't have those problems, but that park is in the middle of nowhere, at least as middle of nowhere as you can get in this country. Hence, we have to make up for it with all the crazy OTT advertising.

    Nice to see you giving some recognition to our theme parks and our somewhat dark senses of humour. Are you aware of UK-based RUclipsr Expedition Themepark? Would you consider doing a Crossover episode with him?
    BTW the naked roller-coaster thing is permitted because in the UK it's not actually against the law to be naked in public. We have much more relaxed public indecency laws compared with the Puritan-ruled United States.

    Funny enough Alton Towers isn't even the only European park to have sold park branded condoms at one point, Walibi Holland used to also have them in the gift shop for years with the slogan "Hard Gaan" (going fast) on it. It's always kinda funny telling Americans this fact and then watching their shock haha

    I love being in Britain as a coaster enthusiast.
    Though it's not as crazy as piss sampling and nude riding;
    I feel like the decision of using spray painted talking sheep for marketing The Smiler (when the rest of The Smiler's marketing was about a brain washing facility that looks like 'We happy few' collided with The Joker's laughing gas,) is still a pretty bizarre choice that we should talk about more.

    As a person based in the UK and have been to Alton several times I can confirm 13 was a massive failure but the biggest issue is that Alton has it is restricted on how high the roller coasters can be built to. They can only be built as high as the tree line so it really does stun and limits what the theme park can do so when they can they will build the track underneath to make up for the high limits. Kinda disappointed as Alton could have higher and more interesting rides if it wasn't for these restrictions.
    I just hope universal studios will definitely be making their park in Bedford as they won't be restricted like Alton is and will be far more themed and interactive compared to Alton.

      I was more shocked at using flavored condoms to market a roller coaster, but the more I think about it, the more I agree with you. This country has a bad habit of shaming people for even mentioning sex. Promoting proper condom usage encourages people to be healthy.
