Hey guys, thank you so much for watching and hope you enjoy the episode! as usual please NO (unmarked) SPOILERS IN COMMENTS, as I'm still going through the game! Because of this, I may wait a while before reading your comments, so sorry if I'm not replying right away but I will do so in the future! thank you!
Hahaha you really are the most scared player I've seen in all playthroughs, that message about reduced frights really messed you up. In some cases it makes you have tunnel vision. But dw, do it at your pace, we don't want to watch you suffer in sake of the content
Ahaha it really did, but I'm just a scaredy cat in general I guess! as for the tunnel vision, I know I can miss stuff pretty often, but that's not so much being scared as just, while recording a Let's Play my mind has to focus on a lot of things ahahah
I think the whole point of the scene where you watch all the stars die is to show that the eye waits till the universe ends and only then blasts a new one. Coz time doesn't exist in the eye so millions of years can pass so quickly there.
I could maybe see that being the case. Even if we assume you're right, of course, the observer themselves therefore is yeeted straight to the end of the universe, and goes out with it - Which may as well be the eye murdering you, personally and specifically, even if the rest of your species is unaffected. Maybe that was enough. Maybe they misinterpreted their vision because of that - Because of their own fear of personally dying. That might have been enough, you know? Enough for them to say "No, we're not doing this. Screw this, screw the Eye."
Yea the player observing the death of all stars at the Eye and the stranger's future vision of the Eye instantly destroying everything are kinda contradictory. I'm personally more inclined to believe that vision at the Eye could be more metaphorical, that it all happens in the player's mind after they have ascended to a higher plane of existence as they shape the next universe (hence why the people they've met materialize as their memories, even being able to converse normally) ... And that the Eye does indeed immediately collapse the instant the player observes it. Though of course, Solanum's quantum existence surviving the 100K years since she should have died sets a precedent that the Eye could totally potentially keep the player alive indefinitely, just that imo it makes little sense for it to do so literally, like it senses "oh yeah it's all dead now we can get to work" - rather than the whole thing being a hallucination/event that occurs outside of tangible reality & time.
@@atkvin yeah, that's also my view - that the vision in the Eye is mostly a 2001: A Space Odyssey type metaphorical head-trip, and it's showing the universe dying *because* you happen to have already entered it at the end of the universe when it's all dying anyway. I think that the Eye waits until the end of the universe to start calling out its signal, inviting observers inside to start a new universe ... but that "end" is defined in more cosmic terms, like a mere half-million years or so to the end.
He guessed that with no clues other than he didn’t die, while so many players even see the command room table and still cant piece that together. Impressive
There *is* a way to take a picture of the hatchling - you can place the scout using the suit's launcher, inside the cockpit looking at the driver seat; then return the suit and snap a picture from the ship controls.
Kind of spoilers I guess, it’s me commenting on something you did I thought was funny: I love how you’re like, there’s a door opening! then don’t go look in the most obvious place
I think is mostly the fact that he is scared. Apparently he read in some comments that at some point something chases him so he's been on the edge all the dlc
2:10 - Probe Canon is fun! The probe passes through all solid terrain, and annihilates everything it doesn’t pass through. Including, sometimes, your ship within a few seconds of the loop start!
Now I'm just imagining Probe Cannon having a bug, where all the randomly selected points are aiming at somewhere on Timber Hearth, so it's just pelting the poor Hearthian's planet with orbital probes and never actually finding the Eye. Man, imagine if everything in the game was the same, except for that. ... there are mods for this game. Someone could do it.
6:45 I'm not certain if you figured it out in future episodes yet, how the Nomai never found the Stranger, but the Stranger was cloaked stationary 40° above the Sun, and the Nomai were VERY concerned about environmental impact, and as such NEVER used any kind of fuel for interplanetary space flight. They never made any kind of space propulsion tech that could explore the empty regions or create vertical orbits like the Hearthian Satellite. Their shuttles relied on slingshoting around all the planets gravity wells (NASA would be quite jealous) If the Nomai DID find the Stranger, things would have been VERY different concerning the Eye. It's possible that the Gravity Cannon probe found it when the time loops started, but the probe wasn't programmed to identify the Stranger, so it didn't bother logging it.
I never really stopped to think about WHY they never found it, but now that you mention it, it makes perfect sense! the Nomai did rely mostly on warp technology and flying straight with their shuttles, so they had no real reason to ever find this thing
You're the first reactor I've seen realize the two sides thing. Some have noticed, but didn't quite think it through. The side you hit coming from the satellite has a more `wow` reveal I think
Shows how clever they are with designing the game! They know you're gonna enter it first from the satellite side and prepare this crazy reveal, and then the other side of the station is perfect to get back to exploration very quickly! they're so clever. Also I love being called a "reactor" 😂 hope I don't go nuclear!
Something to keep in mind: nothing you do will screw up your save file. If you have an idea but you’re hesitant to try it because you aren’t sure if it’ll mess up your save, don’t worry about it. You can always try it to see what happens!
My interpretation of how the Eye works (based only on information from the base game, no DLC spoilers here) is that it acts as a sort of singularity, similar to a real-life black hole, so as you fall into it, relativistic time dilation effectively "fast forwards" you to the end of the universe regardless of when you entered. So it doesn't trigger or accelerate the end of the universe when you enter it, but that's what it might look like from your perspective on the way in, e.g. the galaxies fading out faster and faster during the ending sequence. (I also have thoughts about whether/how the DLC fits in to this interpretation, but that's spoilers.)
I've had similar thoughts about the Eye, I think that's a good theory of how it works... though of course, I think the mystery of it is part of the point! it's meant to be left kind of ambiguous
@37:30 - "... that doesn't make sense with the technology we have." - Worth noting that your ship computer was made from a piece of nomai statue. This is why it remembers things, and also why it has nomai blue wires going into it. One of the things I love most about this game is how many things are there for a reason that isn't simply for the player. Fe: All of the routes from teleporters are from things like the mine site, the forge, etc. The elevator in the mine? Notice that it's the same size, and sits within one of the removed cores. It's the conveyor for the ore. The nomai shuttles are simply that... their spaceships. You can use them, but they're pretty simple 😅Etc, etc
Mmmh, I guess I meant more like... the fact the computer knows about the Stranger shouldn't technically be sufficient for it to accurately locate it at all times, especially considering it's cloaked. It's something you'd normally need to leave a scout on it for, I think it's really something that's more so for player convenience from a gameplay perspective, but it's very minor and you can still buy it as possible ahaha
@@LukaelPlays Ahh, yeah. I see what you mean. I suppose one way to excuse it would be to say that the satellite is able to track any place, and it's only your being there before that gives your computer the reason to ask for it? So more of an address book that you use in conjunction with the satellite that can track it all?
Hello! I found your channel the other day while looking for Outer Wilds playthroughs! I gotta say you're doing an absolutely fantastic job exploring this game. It's my favorite game of all time, and I was so scared to even play the DLC because "how could they add to the base game without ruing the story and experience" and without spoiling anything, the DLC took this game from top 5 for me to #1, easily. What you learn from The Stranger recontextualizes everything and basically answers all of the "why" questions left unanswered. Good luck! The DLC is a little harder to really figure out than the main game, but the realizations are so so good. Thanks for the playthrough, and thank you for respecting the game for what it is and not getting frustrated with it.
Also, I don't think it's a spoiler to say this, and it's a common question among lets player for this game: "How does the ship log remember?" If you don't want to know, stop reading, but it's explained in a missable dialogue option, only on your first loop: You can only get it if you talk to Hal a second time before getting the launch codes in the first loop. The dialogue prompt is: “Why did the Nomai make this statue?” The response is as follows: “Good question! So Gabbro found this fully intact statue on Giant’s Deep, right? Well, Hornfels told me it’s made from the same type of special stone as that statue fragment Chert brought back from the Hourglass Twins. We know the stone from Chert’s fragment can store information - that’s why some of the stone from that statue fragment was repurposed for your ship’s computer. Maybe the statues were made for storing information, too?”
Regarding the technological level of the Owlks vs the Nomai, I would say the Nomai had more advanced technology overall (I am certain they could build an O'Neil cylinder if they needed it), but the Owlks posses higher potential. They remind me of the Motian engineers (given your interest in space and sci-fi, I assume you are familiar with the classic novel "The Mote in God's Eye") - they always have the technology that they currently need. They didn't need much to live in harmony with the environment on their home moon, but once the need to travel to the Eye came, they had no problem designing and building a massive generational space ship to travel to the Eye.
Amazing video as always! I just wanna say that I really appreciate the effort that you put into editing your videos, as I'm sure you don't get enough recognition for it. From the subtle edits like adding text to the screen or music when the game it paused to speeding up segments of the video that would otherwise be boring to watch, It makes your videos really enjoyable :D
Thank you so much for saying that! Makes me really happy to know some people are noticing these little things, because editing is quite time consuming but I have a lot of fun doing it! 😊
1:28:50 you CAN actually see yourself ingame without the suit on and you were pretty close: you jusz shoot the scout onto the front window of your ship from the inside, the take the suit off, pilot the ship and take a foto with the ship scout controls!
You're right that the end is kind of disturbing, but I do think the protagonist found some peace in it. After dying in the loop so many times, and learning all they do about the Nomai and Strangers, and what they tried to accomplish, I think protag is ready to accept the universe's end, and knows it's really just a new beginning. That's my interpretation anyway.
1:39:20 - That elevator, btw, is one of the only two ingress points into the Stranger that is not part of an airlock. My guess is that this is how the ghost matter got inside.
Interesting! I think ghost matter pretty much went through all matter (except water) otherwise surely a few nomai hiding underground or in closed spaces would have survived somehow
@@LukaelPlaysPerphaps... Although in that case I don't see how water is different from any other matter. If something can penetrate minerals, it surely can penetrate water. So I think of the ghost matter as a high-densitry gas that was under such high pressure that it pushed itself through any non-solid barriers. And if you remember the Nomai's shuttle, they used forcefields of some kind as airlock barriers, and those likely were not designed to withstand enormous pressure.
This game doesn't do cheap jump scares. The "dlc may be scary" warning is for other reasons not jum scares. You know when to be scared very clearly and always remember, you're in a time loop whatever happens you'll respawn, so if you get scared and run of a cliff you'll be fine.
That's good to know about no jump scares, these are the worst and I can't deal with em! and yeah, I know that I'll just end up respawning (technically I guess that's true in most games really) but it doesn't help that much in the moment when facing the unknown ahahaha
@@LukaelPlays If it helps, take a deep breath and keep exploring. It will be less scary as you strip away the mystery. Bravery isn't running away from terror, it's facing it down. One of the major themes of the DLC, in fact. By the way, if you want a handy timeline for when the dam collapses, launch your scout at it, it gives you a surface integrity reading just like on Brittle Hollow.
I watched all your main game videos at once since they were all already out. Now I get the be surprised from time to time with a new DLC video because I still don't know the schedule!
I've watched my bf playing the original game. I couldn’t really play myself because of motion sickness and overall difficult controls for me (I don't play much). We've never really got to play the DLC and he's now quite busy to play it just for me. So I'm so grateful for your playthrough. Your style of playing, reactions and logic is just so perfect for me. Thank you so much I'll continue to comment other videos so that youtube algorithms could promote your work more
I´ve seen a lot of playthroughs after finishing this game. But the way this guy´s brain works and all his thought processes amaze me :D Love your videos man. Also no need to be afraid of classic "Jump Scares"
7:22 Yes, exactly! There is dialogue somewhere that says something to the effect of "Good thing we hadn't evolved to live outside of the water yet." It also mentions how, if not for the Ghost Matter, they'd have co-existed with the Nomai.
1:43:23 I have to agree. Great progress in the DLC so far. You're asking great question and making surprising connections too. Hopefully I can finish watching this series over the weekend. :)
I personally think the houses give a sort of viking vibe. lol at u even saying theres more slides at the tower location but then leaving without checking them.
Man it is so cool to see you go through this with all your interesting theories, I have finished the game though I remember coming up with all my own different thoughts about what happened and is about to happen. Can't wait for the next one!
Hi! I enjoyed your playthrough a lot. Good work! Not sure if you notice this in the future, but let me give you another useful fun fact: If you send your scout to the Dam, you will be able to check its 'integrity'. When it reaches 0%, it breaks. This is a nice way to know when the Dam will collapse.
Honestly, face cam is the best way to really enjoy lets plays. Your reactions are always top-notch, and then your brain is loading. I wish I'd played Mario 64, everyone seems to have that innate "Painting is a door" knowledge. *facepalms hard over what happens in the rest of the episode* Oh god dude... I thought Oliver had it bad. Welp give Subnautica a try next. Do it... It's good time XD
1:28:47 -- Actually, you can. Shoot the scout into the front window, take off your suit, then buckle up and take pictures of yourself through the ship's scout launcher (don't recall the scout). You've got a model and everything.
19:39 - you mention the species' technology and then at 1:23:10 you mention their names. If you think about both informations, it creates an added layer... ;) I'll let you think about it, but in case: Heartian's names are rocks, like Nomaian architecture - and Nomai's names are plants, like Heartian architecture. No wonder they get along that well :D
Really enjoying the let's play so far! I really like it when you just pause the game and talk about your thoughts. Two spoiler-free things to help you in the next episode. 1. If you throw your scout on the dam you can see it's integrity slowly ticking down. So if you don't want to be scared from it breaking, just throw your scout on it from time to time. 2.That sound at 49:02 was no coincidence
@@LukaelPlays Well, yeah, that's what I sort of meant - you could've gotten the wrong answers too quickly, thus confusing you and messing up the proper exploration path :)
** (Maybe?) Spoilers About The Ship's Log ** All I will say about being able to track and return to The Stranger is that the ship's onboard computer does indeed have the technology necessary to do so. For the same reason it retains information from loop to loop.
I'll just paste what I replied to another comment about this, but basically I feel like the fact the computer knows about the Stranger shouldn't technically be sufficient for it to accurately locate it at all times, especially considering it's cloaked? (It's something you'd normally need to leave a scout on it for) I think it's really something that's more so for player convenience from a gameplay perspective, but it's very minor and not that farfetched anyway
49:15 - "What was that?? You guys heard it?" * Starts slowly backing away from the tower * Oh boy, oh boy, someone's gonna have a great time in this DLC! 😂
Kudos to you for figuring out so much of the Stranger history correctly from just two burnt slides! A bit of my own speculations (spoiler-ish) below. . . . When the Owlks scanned the Eye with their memory/mind/emotions scanner thingy, they perceived what would happen once a conscious observer enters the Eye. Because of the nature of the Eye, time does not pass there (or to be more precise, it does not exist there). So it's not that the Eye would send a pulse that destroys the Universe. Rather, the Eye would wait till the entirety of the current universe is gone (e.g. a heat death of the universe, trillions of years after an observer enters the Eye), and then reset everything. But for the Owlks (due to then nature of their scanner and/or perception), this came as the wrong causal relationship - once anyone enters the Eye, it will destroy everything. As such, they both scared and angry with the Eye, and decided to make sure nobody can ever enter it. Thus the probe to block the signal, and the watch that they put themselves into on the Stranger. We don't know for sure, but I suspect the original idea was for the Stranger and the Owlks to interfere in some way, should any other species randomly arrive in the Hearthian system (e.g. uncloack the Stranger and let other species know what the Owlks discovered about the Eye).
@@LukaelPlays i will! Your commentary is very good, found your channel yesterday hehe. Also, i plan on watching the detroit: become human playthrough as well, that game is a banger
Okay, so... In your world, red walls = death? No wonder you get spooked easily then.😄 Joke aside, I don't think there is any official term for the Stranger's inhabitants, but players tend to call them owlks (because owl + elk = owlk, I believe?). You're already making good progress (and as always, I like the clever way you make things connect in your theories), but don't worry, there is still plenty for you to understand. The DLC is about half as long as the base game. If you get spooked by random unlit rooms, may I suggest listening to Fear of the Dark by Iron Maiden, to cheer you up?😛
Actually you may be surprised, these red walls ARE death! They actually kill you if you touch them, they are theorized to be the ship’s giant cooling system! That’s why they’re red - they’re just really really hot! This cooling is what allows certain uh… activity onboard, as you may be aware.
@@meridiasbeacon7669 Wait, they can kill you?! I just learned something years after playing the game! It's not like you can easily touch them without going for it on purpose, I remember rushing through the entire loop more than once and it never happened to me.
(MINOR SPOILERS) Damn it's so sad seeing how someone's comment about being chased ruined this experience for you :( You were not supposed to be scared of every shadow and assume there is a monster behind every corner. Well, not until a very specific thing happens that you yourself trigger and it's pretty obvious at that point.
Aaah it's okay, honestly the warning message about the DLC being scary might have been what got to me the most, but I would have probably been a bit creeped out regardless because of the setting and all the dark corners! but I still had fun regardless :)
I'm really enjoying this playthrough and all your thoughtful and intelligent commentary. But if you ever want to finish this game, il faut arrêter d'être une poule mouillée! You're going to have to go in dark places! If you really want to save them for later, at least keep careful track of which places you haven't been to yet.
oh boy, i bet a lot of discoveries were made when editing this episode. you just nearly missed two rather good leads, but at least you found one at the very end. can't wait for the next episode.
two things i want to add after sleeping over it: 1) yes, this episode "was" kinda slow, but it's nearly not your fault, and it's absolutely NOT an issue. until a certain point, discoveries will slow down for a bit. of course, it could have been faster if you saw earlier what you saw at the end, but to each their own pace, so don't worry at all about the speed at which you discover things. and bonus points for staying a full loop on timber earth, checking what the heck happens to the stranger for it not to get caught in the supernova. 2) regarding the damn dam... hmm, what if there was a way to never get jumpscared by it again? :)
This is the first time I saw somebody get this close to the painting puzzle and yet not realize it. And all because the Devs trolled everybody with the "reduced frights" message :)

We know the stone from Chert’s fragment can store information - that’s why some of the stone from that statue fragment was repurposed for your ship’s computer. Maybe the statues were made for storing information, too?”
The revelation of why there where fuel tanks in the burned temple sure was something.
Well, I never thought I'd see anyone more anxious than me because of the "reduce frights" message 😂
"It's dark in there, I'm not gonna go there".
Oh boy, we are in for a ride 😄
The music and sound design really add so much to the game, especially the reels. They feel impactful no matter how many times I watch them
You're right that the end is kind of disturbing, but I do think the protagonist found some peace in it. After dying in the loop so many times, and learning all they do about the Nomai and Strangers, and what they tried to accomplish, I think protag is ready to accept the universe's end, and knows it's really just a new beginning. That's my interpretation anyway.
Your playthrough is just so good! I love seeing your thought process, you’re absurdly perceptive and thoughtful
Aw man, thank you, what a nice thing to say 😭
@@LukaelPlays When facing the unknown the best thing to do is slap the unknown in the face and yell, "You answer to me, bitch!"
The hearthians are all very deep in denial about the sun exploding lol
I watched all your main game videos at once since they were all already out. Now I get the be surprised from time to time with a new DLC video because I still don't know the schedule!
same, lol
Thank you for watching! schedule is new videos every Tuesday and Friday 😊 (Elden Ring on mondays, then currently Outer Wilds friday)
schedule is new videos every Tuesday and Friday!
Thank you so much
I'll continue to comment other videos so that youtube algorithms could promote your work more
Also shout out to you for figuring the logic behind Heartheans surviving the ghost matter. I got it only after reading some wiki article
I'm happy to hear I can provide that for you! 😌 thank you for watching!
I´ve seen a lot of playthroughs after finishing this game. But the way this guy´s brain works and all his thought processes amaze me :D Love your videos man. Also no need to be afraid of classic "Jump Scares"
Thank you for watching! :)
Good work! Not sure if you notice this in the future, but let me give you another useful fun fact:
If you send your scout to the Dam, you will be able to check its 'integrity'. When it reaches 0%, it breaks. This is a nice way to know when the Dam will collapse.
Thank you! I did eventually use this trick, only because people had thankfully told me in the comments!
Agreed! I can't watch let's plays that don't have facecam, I just don't see much point to it lol
Glad you're enjoying the reactions!
I love your analytical thoughts!! Deep thinker!
1:28:47 -- Actually, you can. Shoot the scout into the front window, take off your suit, then buckle up and take pictures of yourself through the ship's scout launcher (don't recall the scout). You've got a model and everything.
At 1:17:50 you can see the raft with the artifact on it stuck on the rooftop lmao
19:39 - you mention the species' technology and then at 1:23:10 you mention their names. If you think about both informations, it creates an added layer... ;) I'll let you think about it, but in case:
Heartian's names are rocks, like Nomaian architecture - and Nomai's names are plants, like Heartian architecture. No wonder they get along that well :D
Correct, nice catch! I wonder if that was intentional
1:22:45 Dude this info is golden! I have never heard anything about that before, although I am hanging in the subreddit quite often. Thanks!
It's a really cool detail!
My man scared and shits himself and i love it! ♥️
1:33:00 - Yet another OMG moment, similar to your first interaction with the Ash Twin warp tower. Almost skipped half of the DLC content :)
Oh I wouldn't have skipped any of it but I might have been a bit confused 😂
@@LukaelPlays Well, yeah, that's what I sort of meant - you could've gotten the wrong answers too quickly, thus confusing you and messing up the proper exploration path :)
36:29 "reelization" /rimshot
lmaooo
** (Maybe?) Spoilers About The Ship's Log **
All I will say about being able to track and return to The Stranger is that the ship's onboard computer does indeed have the technology necessary to do so.
You guys heard it?"
* Starts slowly backing away from the tower *
Oh boy, oh boy, someone's gonna have a great time in this DLC! 😂
Kudos to you for figuring out so much of the Stranger history correctly from just two burnt slides! A bit of my own speculations (spoiler-ish) below.

Solanum means 'old Sun' in Latin.
Indeed! it works two ways~
12:10 100% seen somebody play this dlc before
1:35:38 obivously i'm 1 year too late, but you can throw your scout onto the dam and it says the surface integrity
Keep watching! 😉
@@LukaelPlays i will! Your commentary is very good, found your channel yesterday hehe. Also, i plan on watching the detroit: become human playthrough as well, that game is a banger
Okay, so... In your world, red walls = death? No wonder you get spooked easily then.😄
Joke aside, I don't think there is any official term for the Stranger's inhabitants, but players tend to call them owlks (because owl + elk = owlk, I believe?).
I've heard them called Owldeer.
WIth that beard u really started looking even more french :)
Bahaha do I? 😂 I'm not french though I'm from Québec!
@@LukaelPlays U have cool soft french accent, so I assumed that:) You just remind me so much of Aramis from the Musketeers.
He is very handsome so I will take that as a compliment! 😁
_When you're so close to something..._
looking good the new beard suits you!
May i get a clip of you saying reservoir a bunch of times in a quiet voice?
For... erm.... research purposes.
😏😂😂
(MINOR SPOILERS)
Damn it's so sad seeing how someone's comment about being chased ruined this experience for you :(
You were not supposed to be scared of every shadow and assume there is a monster behind every corner.
Little advice -- don't fear so much) You are in a time loop, so just rush. Maybe death and reloop, maybe nothing bad)
But I was more scared than you)
Ahah yeah I know technically nothing bad can really happen to me but I get so invested in the gameplay that I can't help it! X)
I know I know 😩 I'm gonna have to!
oh boy, i bet a lot of discoveries were made when editing this episode. you just nearly missed two rather good leads, but at least you found one at the very end.
can't wait for the next episode.
two things i want to add after sleeping over it:
1) yes, this episode "was" kinda slow, but it's nearly not your fault, and it's absolutely NOT an issue. until a certain point, discoveries will slow down for a bit. of course, it could have been faster if you saw earlier what you saw at the end, but to each their own pace, so don't worry at all about the speed at which you discover things. and bonus points for staying a full loop on timber earth, checking what the heck happens to the stranger for it not to get caught in the supernova.
2) regarding the damn dam... hmm, what if there was a way to never get jumpscared by it again? :)
This is the first time I saw somebody get this close to the painting puzzle and yet not realize it. And all because the Devs trolled everybody with the "reduced frights" message :)
I know you deserve more subs but since you're on 666 right now I hope no one else subscribes. 👹
