- Mackenzie Phillips really has to stand up against this really pushy interviewer on the Today Show.

[I see a lot of 'ignorant comments' about Mackenzie Phillip's career and musical legacy, and I decided to leave a short informative update to bring her Baby Boomer "fans" up to speed.]

Actually she IS a singer, performer, musician, and song-writer... she has had a very loyal and dedicated fanbase and cult-following with Millennials, like myself for the last 20 years. She sang 3 seasons worth of original music as the character Molly Phillips on Disney's So Weird, [that is streaming on Disney+ NOW!] She also wrote a bunch of songs with her dad John Phillips as one of the new and last member's of The Mamas & the Papas during the latter years of the band's album releases and concert touring (mid 80's to early 90's). I'm a huge fan so forgive me as I continue...
She sang backup on her dad's album Pay, Pack & Follow, on her sister Bijou's album "I'd Rather Eat Glass" as well as Peter Tork's - "Stranger Things Have Happened". It's funny because the only reason she got the role of Carol in American Graffiti [her break out role] was because an exec has seen her perform with her childhood band back when she was 14. She still writes music with her son Shane Barakan and recently had a performance at Agape International Spiritual Center in Beverly Hills, California. It's crazy to me that most fans from her breakout era know very little about her musical legacy. So far as thinking she hasn't made her mark like her two sisters and her parents did in the industry. It's actually quite far from the truth. She's a musical genius and an icon silently standing right along side her very musical family. Currently she is a drug and alcohol counselor at Breathe Life Health Center in Hollywood, and she is a co-host on her own recovery podcast called 𝘈𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢 𝘙𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴. New episodes are uploaded on iTunes and Spotify every Tuesday. FUN FACT: Her younger brother Tamerlane Phillips has also put out his own record in 2008 entitled 'Spiritual Blossoms' with Andru Cann. Her son seems like such a loving and understanding soul. God Bless them both. Chynna believes her and also openly spoke of very disturbing memories of her father, not incest but disturbing. John was a very heavy addict. Keith Richards even stated how bad John was and that's saying a lot. One can only wonder if he even knew what he was even doing. Amazing how Michelle puts down Mack but yet puts down her life with John...but that's ok I guess at least for someone like Michelle. I feel Cass would have been there for Mackenzie if she were here.
When the interviewer asked Mackenzie why didn't she write the book while her dad was still alive and could defend himself, what Mackenzie had to say was so true. If she'd written the book while he was still alive people would criticize her for not waiting until after he was dead. Sometimes people can be such thick-headed assholes.

She's an outsider in her own family, and an outsider in the world because of experiences - not of her choosing - which marked her forever. But she's wonderful - no matter what her stepmother or sister or anyone thinks.
Unfortunately her family is in denial of what happened.They do not want to believe her. Her family is victim shaming her.
She sounds sane to me. Noone wants to here negatives about someone they saw as upright and decent. Denial and even hostility is common toward the revealer.
A very unsympathetic interviewer trivializing and victim-blaming .

I think the interviewer tried to stay neutral. You can say she should've been more sensitive, but the media's only real job is to stay neutral and let their guest speak their mind.

I believed then and now that she was sexually abused by her father, John Phillips, which, in my opinion, is the reason she sought solace in heavy drugs. Her addiction to them is a different topic. God bless you, Mackenzie and your son Shane.

Unhealthy sexual relationships such as incest and pedophilia generally have more to do with control and power than attraction. Mackenzie also describes "waking up from a blackout... in that horrible truth" and "compartmentalizing, boxing away difficult memories". These are symptoms of DID (multiple personality disorder), where the psyche splits into numerous distinct identities (frequently separated by amnestic barriers) in order to cope with traumatic situations.

100% believe her. Michelle Phillips took up with John when she was 16... yeah, no denial of daddy issues there... he was in his 30s. So there's her axe, as well as jealousy. The younger Phillips half sisters ... who knows what they may be keeping quiet, and in Chynna's case, she's going to go along with her mom.
Michelle Phillips was the one who initiated the relationship. And back in the 60s women acted a lot more mature than they do now

i filled myself with alcohol, drugs and wanted to die, as i found myself in this nightmare that i felt trapped in, now im trying to recover and been sober and drug free for 4 years now, although its still hard knowing and remembering what ive done,
I don't understand. Help me. How do you do this for 10 years?? If it's so bad ... how do you continue? this question is not answered in this interview.
The important thing here to understand is that there is a giant parent struggle between father and daughter psychologically. Also remembering that Mackenzie initially stated it was complicit, which there IS NO SUCH THING in this dynamic. It was a romance in a sort of way that goes beyond the norm and only someone who has been through that type of damage can understand. It's like a Stockholm syndrome in a way. You love your parent but he was the authority figure in this relationship, he was the parent. Not setting aside that he was a mega Star. A person can't understand the dynamic of a young girl being abused by her father, it goes beyond the physical and is rooted in a sickness in human nature. To harm those we love, to lust after a family member it's sickening to many but facing facts it's been happening since the dawn of time to all age groups. It's something we have to mend by discussing it out in the open in hope of better understanding and ever striving to hopefully one day end the danger of this form of rape and neglect in our society. One cannot forget either that Mackenzie was admittedly under the influence of highly psycho effective drugs and said drugs have been known to numb a persons sense of moral self. Your values go out the window when your both floating on a cloud in your mind. Like she states in her book that on one occasion she "woke up" to him being asleep next to her but her panties were down. They'd shoot up together probably for days alone and she'd wake up abused by him and was as complicit as a person can be who is the daughter of the abuser. I hope I helped shed some light.

@@SoWeirdBoy And also -- the dad was incredibly negligent and would leave MacKenzie with no warning for months -- YEARS -- which is why she had to pound the pavement looking for work to support herself and her brother when she was a teenager. So the idea that he would suddenly be "paying attention" to her -- even through this toxic eroticization of his own daughter -- probably kept her in it for much longer than it might otherwise have. But whatever her reasons, she had to experience and go through what she went through for as long as she did, whether or not it makes sense to us. People are super complicated.
It was a film.Also if you were 12 then how come you were so aware of how fast she came across? Most 12 year olds I know dont think about these things & certainly dont anylise things in that way unless they may feel some empathy or identify with the character.
Amazing, how the liberal press approached Clarence Thomas and Justice Kavanaugh and how they questioned MacKenzie! Who cares what Michelle thinks!

It’s hard to sympathize with Michelle here. She saw the horrific abuse, neglect and exposure to drugs that Mackenzie went through as a child. She was one of the adults in the room. It’s hard to imagine someone witnessing that then blaming the person who grew up like that for becoming addicted and dismissing her very believable story of further abuse after she managed against all odds to become clean and sober.
I whole heartedly agree. Given that context, you are perfectly correct. She was also a (step) parent to her and is the mother of her sister. If anything she should have been protecting Mack by refusing to comment, or to at least be supportive of her own personal path. We know now that everybody in the family was aware of it because Mack told her family very early on, like when Chynna and Bijou were young adults. So, it was nothing new. She should have not let her personal views be used to bash Mack publicly. But, in 2023 bygones are bygones. Now, Mack owns the rehab that got her clean and cohosts an addiction podcast. I’m glad the family is no longer estranged and getting along. Mack is an eternal optimist, and rightly so. 🫶🏽❤️🔥😭
as of the date of this video, her family is mad at her because now they are the "incest" family. they feel intense shame and blame her. they are human after all. I hope that since this time they moved beyond themselves and rallied around her. I do not know the current status of the family.

If somebody is accused of something he or she ought to be allowed to defend him or herself. Nobody should ever be judged simply on accusations. Crimwes shall be settled in courts. Not in books.
As Mack said, if she accused him when he was alive, people would say why didn't you wait until he was dead. HE'S DEAD. What are the unjust courts gonna do? I agree that someone should be accused in person when they are alive, but this is a special case. Incredibly famous people. Mack needed to tell this story because it was apart of the depression keeping her addicted to heroin and coke. And how was the crime settled in her book? She has every right to tell her story and she should NEVER have to apologize or show ANY SORT of kindness to her abuser, her father. He dug his grave, now he's laying in it. Who on earth told her: wait till he is dead? plz give me one name. I am not defending anybody, or any crime, I am just keen that life should contain fair trials. Maybe someone didn't say that directly to her, but she addresses your exact point in THIS video at 3:28. This is her thinking. She's trying to heal from YEARS of trauma. She's also a public figure and preyed upon by her famous father. I think she needed this public revelation. She now doesn't hold that guilt or pain from "keeping it in the family". It's not enough that her family knows he's a predator. He's a well loved famous man, the world deserves to know. And who's to say he ONLY DID THIS TO MACK? Maybe that's another reason her sisters became upset with her, we don't know if this cycle repeated with his other daughters as well... we don't know. How could she have accused him back then? She was using even after his death. It was eating her up inside the lies and the secrets she was holding on to. Now she is a licensed councelor and helping other people who struggle with the same issues as her. She's stepped away from acting to help others. Mackenzie is telling THE TRUTH. She deserves to.
It is just her fantasy. Nobody has a view likethat,"wait till he is dead!", nobody. My view is absolute in cases like these. And if it was the case that her father absued other women too, it was MacKenzies - or everybody elses duty - at the time to speka up and to stop that while it was time to do that.. My absolute view is that everybody on this eartyh has a right to know what he or she is accused of, and should be given the chance to defend him or herself. If crimes are commited it is best for all to get people convicted, and in cases of abuse to get treatment. I do not think we are getiin any further in this discussion. I can see mucjh of your point, but I think you are wrong, and consequently I think she is.
