One becomes the center of the music, then the other wrestles back control, until, during the fight's peak both tracks synchronize in an amazing crescendo of strings and emotion. Really awesome stuff
Tanjiro: "Oh man I'm sure glad we stopped the demon train and everybody made it out of this movie okay!" Rengoku: "Hey, who left all this animation budget over here?"
One thing that demon slayer excels at is keeping an established power balance. So many Shonen anime introduce an MC that starts weak, but wins every battle, surpasses all other characters, and eventually is proved to be the best of them all. Particularly frustrating is when a new side character gets introduced as “the strongest”, and then easily gets overtaken by the protagonist to force some sort of tangible “growth” that is entirely unearned. Demon slayer is fantastic at giving Tanjiro his moments, but it never lets you forget that he’s a kid. The Hashira are introduced as the strongest and the best that the demon slayer corps have, and that distinction is clear right up to the very end. Tanjiro’s perceived victory over Rui, and then Giyuu’s subsequent rescue is exactly that. And then here with Tanjiros victory followed by Rengoku’s protection of him and all the other passengers. Tanjiro still grows and learns new skills, his fights are emotional and hype as hell, but the Hashira are the ones that almost always do the heavy lifting. And really that’s how it should be. *EDIT* SPOILER WARNING : SOMEONE IN THE REPLIES TO THIS COMMENT DROPPED A PRETTY HUGE SPOILER. So you know. Don't proceed unless you've already read Demon slayer or you don't care about spoilers.
Love this 💯 I was just talking about how I love the way Tanjiro’s strength is written. It’s clear that his training wasn’t a waste of time like a lot of shonen characters. Its established that he’s very strong, smart, and determined but it isn’t blown out of proportion because he’s the MC. He truly is talented and strong but not to a ridiculous degree. There’s room for real growth and not just introducing a “rival” to make him better. Can’t wait for the rest of the show
What, you mean you don’t want to see an obnoxious child ninja who can barely throw a punch become a god who can create a thousand clones, destroy a planet and create nukes with his bare hands? But whyyyyy?! Goku was a monkey boy who punched real good and now he’s…. I honestly don’t even know anymore… lmao I gave up ages ago. Power scaling is so absurd. I think MHA does a pretty great job because there are always real consequences and they’re at a literal school learning to get stronger. We see powerful heroes and we never really surpass that level established, and the story is only happening because the strongest guy around… isn’t… anymore. We get a taste of how powerful super hero’s can really be, but start from the bottom and work our way up slowly. It isn’t perfect and has some cliche moments, but it has some of the best power scaling out there IMO.
Going into this movie, I didn't like Rengoku. Like, at all. His character did not jive with me. Coming out of it.... I was bawling my eyes out at the beauty and tragedy of the whole thing. Demon Slayer keeps doing that to me...
Going into this movie, I thought Rengoku was ... fine. His character didn't really jive with me, but he didn't rub me the wrong way either. Coming out of it .... he was fine. He still didn't jive with me, and he still didn't rub me the wrong way. Final verdict: That was definitely a character that existed.

I, as an individual, relate heavily to that sort of character, and therefore I am capable of mourning his tragedy. Point is, everyone is different. I was lucky enough to see this in the theater and let me tell you, it was absolutely breathtaking on a big screen. I'm not even super huge on Demon Slayer, I like it fine, but like the show the movie is just so good at cutting to the core of blood-pumping shonen action. The final battle especially had me on the edge of my seat and I was kind of sad when it finally ended. On that note, the fact that this was rated R is kind of hilarious to me since it really is no more intense than, like Geoff said, a standard blockbuster or even the show itself. In line to pick up my ticket the lady specifically pointed out "Mortal Kombat to the left and Demon Slayer to the right" and I just couldn't help but think how odd that sentence really was.
It's rated R because the MPAA hates, and I mean dispises, dismemberment. They let it fly if you can't see the cut or its mostly hidden (like how End Game handled it), but you can't really do that with this film, especially in the final fight. I agree it shouldn't be rated R. It's not particularly gruesome or gross as some rated R films when it comes to blood and guts. But the MPAA will continue to be the MPAA as long as Karens exist.
All the people saying this or something similar have got me SO PUMPED to see how this anime develops in the next seasons. Although I will now avoid all these comment sections like the plague to avoid spoilers.
@@abdulscharifi8398 It's also how KnY does things. You learn about the Demon's human past as they are about to die, or are dying. The human past that as much as they try to push it down and forget it still effects their actions. Also complaining it's the last arc is kind of weak since the last arc is fucking massive, including 4 Upper Moon fights(all as relevant as previous major fights) and the fight with Michael Jackson.
While watching the film, I couldn’t help but read a message from the creators of the movie to its audience in a time where many people are struggling with abruptly losing loved ones to an unstoppable, vicious, force of nature… to not dream too much of the past and focus on the future and the gratitude for what we DO have, whether it’s our lives or our family or our memories. Thinking about COVID as I watched Tanjiro plead with Rengoku at the end of his heroic life is what brought me to tears at the end; that despite everything we’ve all lost, we must move forward as best we can, if only to honor the path we’ve taken. Great vid, man.

It's literally a review, but the fact that I keep listening to your videos is do to the rich vocabulary. Love your work and keep YOUR heart ablaze through this pandemic
Man I said this before, but it really sucks that this got snubbed at the Oscars. Like, it’s not the best animated movie of all time, but come on, the competition was super slim in this year’s animated category, this should have at least gotten a nomination.
The Oscars and other awards shows generally pick dramas over anything else, which is why you get the same type of movies that are nominated. They tend to do a better job of showing off emotions and thus are considered as better acted. The one thing that Demon Slayer definitely does well are its action sequences. Unfortunately, there isn't a category for that last I checked.
This movie so was beautiful. Nothing felt rushed and characters were good as in the anime. People are pretty stupid for thinking this series is carried solely on animation. Rengoku is the goat and the fact that he lost is SO unique to me. Tanjiro didn't even save the day here.
"People are pretty stupid for thinking this series is carried solely on animation." If you _actually_ paid attention to people's criticisms, you would know that "carried by animation" does not mean "the story is shit." Most people who criticize it acknowledge its value... which is why people say that it is carried. The story isn't bad per se, but it isn't ground-breaking or amazing. Even in this review, he said that the movie would be a "B movie" were it not for its high production values. Though the fact you see Rengoku losing and Tanjiro not being the hero as unique means that you really don't read enough light novels or manga. To you, it is unique. Loved the review! Hearing your thoughts is always great. I personally thought the movie was really deep and the best moment in the story so far (when it comes to the anime). The thesis to me was that the struggle of the demon slayers is a COMPLETELY unfair one. Their battle against the demons is almost downright impossible. They have human bodies that decay and no magic abilities, so they're always at a disadvantage. This is something that would lead many to despair and give up, but the demon slayers go on. It's a really powerful message that I've never seen explored this deeply in any shonen anime. Sure, many deal with overpowered villains but this is not discussed much since the power of the villains only comes to create hype or to add stakes. The movie actually deals with the psychological and philosophical implications of this fact. The most powerful demons live for hundreds of years. They don't even change, whereas we get a literal graveyard full of demon slayers in the opening. The whole film explores this idea, with Rengoku's backstory specifically focusing on how his dad reached ultimate power only to become disillusioned and discouraged, even to the point of dismissing the importance of hashiras and the demon slayer corps. (Spoilers) But the ultimate example of this is the end fight. As you've said before, in Demon Slayer, the ideas are expressed through the action and here we see Rengoku, the pinacle of human strenght, been pretty much useless in front of a high ranking demon. Sure, he's strong, but his energy is not infinite, his wounds take long to heal. in the end, he's only kind of able to turn the tables because the freaking sun comes up. The human condition is unbearable, but the fight must continue. It's all said in Tanjiro's speech at the end. Even when the fight is unfair and full of pain, we keep fighting. Of course that's something that applies to real life as well and I think that the brutality and honesty the movies uses to express that message is what makes it an espectacular work of art.
I saw this movie in theatres on opening night here in Tokyo. Theatres were as packed as they were legally allowed to be. Everyone had already read the manga, including myself, so they were talking along with the film as it was taking place. Everyone in that theatre has a bonding moment - one of the few times I didn't feel super foreign in Japan. Was good feels, man.
"Demon baddies aren't quite as interesting or multifaceted as those we met in the last season" You're going to eat you words. And when you do, we all expect a livestream of you solving a sudoku.
No, he wouldn't. Literally, the only good "Baddie" in the manga (and show) is Akaza. The rest of the enemies are fucking carboards, including BBEG in face of Muzan
Plus, the Lower 1 was really not flushed out at all. We know he has a murder boner and that's about it. I was surprised when they gave him the standard slow drawn-out disintegration death when the point of those is usually to focus on the tragedy of the demon's backstory, and with him it was just frustration at not getting to become more powerful.
Zenitsu was underutilized. Everyone else had a big climactic payoff to their caricatures, but Zenitsu, who's entire premise involves being badass when unconscious, didn't get to be badass against the one demon who's entire schtick was to put people to sleep.
I think that's because Zenitsu got a whole bunch of time dedicated to his solo spider fight just one arc ago, so it didn't make sense pacing wise give him the spotlight again after he had just left it. inosuke needed some time to shine after his stint in spider mountain.
Rengoku trapping the demon’s one arm in his gut with ab strength and holding the other arm as he tries to cut the demon’s head off is definitely up there as one of the most badass things I’ve ever seen. It gave me what I call hype chills
I was sad at the ending even though I knew how it ended. But i was not prepared for when his mom appeared and the music stopped, literally a waterfall of tears.
I can't lie I strongly disagree with the sentiment that after the movie you have little to think about. Rengoku's character was extremely well written in my opinion and had me deep in thought about how amazing it is that he had the opportunity to be immortal, and still turned it down due to the values his mother instilled in him. But I guess I just cared and related to Rengoku a lot more than some
"2 warriors at the top of their game pushing their bodies to and past their limits"- I don't think Akaza was fighting seriously let alone limit. Rengoku was the one barely holding against him.
My own feeling was that Akaza was fighting seriously... But limiting himself just to the level slightly above Rengoku, to test him in a way, and to further drive home his point about "human weakness" and convince him to take his offer of demonhood. It was likely still a serious and challenging fight for Akaza and not one he could take lightly, but not quite "to and past his limits" challenging, if you know what I mean. Only at the very end he was truly fighting for his life, and would propably die to the sun if he was held back just a few seconds (or would actually get decapitated by Rengoku. Hell, for a second I thought Tanjiro or Inosuke will slam into the blade and help drive Rengoku's sword all the way through Akaza's neck).
@@wojciechkowalski8061 Yeah I agree that Akaza was truly fighting for his life at the end for the sun showing up. But He was just making Rengoku go to the "Human Limit" for convincing him to become a demon that doesn't have those. Based on his expressions during the fight I figured he was not serious. He didn't even use any blood demon art (I dont know if he has any technique) like Rui did against Giyu. It's at the end he became serious. I don't know why some people thinks Akaza was fighting for fun and he just enjoys fighting.
If Akaza wasn’t trying and had total control over the situation. He wouldn’t have almost been burned/ destroyed by the sun as they were holding him. I think rengoku gave him a run for his money.
This is one of the animes that actually makes me cry. There was even a anime that made me question my humanity because I really couldn't cry, I'd feel sad, but I couldn't cry.

@@thealmightyidot4807 Tragedy can be a powerful force that either encourages people to become better for their sake and that of others, or drives them into despair and hatred. You'll note that throughout the series, the strongest characters, or at least the ones with the most potential, are like that because they've experienced traumas and suffering that ended up pushing them forward. And it's true for both demon slayers and demons. You're not expected to cry a river everytime a character has a tragic backstory, you're just being shown it because so many of the characters are driven to push themselves beyond their limits constantly, and watching that struggle would be far less engaging and meaningful without knowing about the experiences that motivate the character. It helps you to understand why the characters continue to push themselves to perform such otherworldly feats. Someone who hasn't gone through so much can't be expected to fight nearly as hard, or have nearly as much drive to succeed. These are larger-than-life characters, and they became that way because they had powerful past experiences and/or traumas that shaped them. It's just a fact of their world, and it's important to the themes of the series that it be shown and understood.

I went to watch this movie with 3 friends. Only one of us never watched Season 1 so she didn't get the full impact of emotions. She saw us cried during the scenes of Tanjiro's dream. She didn't fully understand the extent of how family is important to Tanjiro and how that dream is such a cruel act towards Tanjiro. It was really funny how all three of us tried to explain to her why we felt so emotional during those scenes. Yeah, it's better that people watched Season 1 before watching the movie.
I finally got around to watching the review and I actually started tearing up while you were recapping the ending like goddamn. I know I'm emotional but if discussion of that scene along with the background music can get me going there is just no hope for me.
Demon Slayer continually surprises me by playing with traditional shounen tropes and just making something very new recognizable but undeniably fresh from them. I mean, in the very first season we learn that there are 12 Demon Moons, we watch our young hero get his ass beat and settle in to watch him climb the power scale, killing the demon moons one by one. And then Muzan annihilates the lower six in about 2 minutes, cutting our time frame down dramatically and drastically the raising the stakes for the training arc the heroes are going through at the time because if Lower Five almost killed Tanjiro how are they supposed to face off with Upper One? Or how the core character trait of Tanjiro's is his empathy, a tried and true virtue of protags everywhere. Unlike his contemporaries, Tanjiro recognizes the need to kill demons and so his empathy materializes in a unique way of trying to euthanize demons as quickly and mercifully as he can. This movie definitely has my favorite one these though, Rengoku has immense Older Brother Mentor Vibes and withing minutes of talking to him you can already imagine how his teachings could help the main gang, possibly even developing and exploring the full potential of the Hinokami Kagura. That obviously won't happen now and the realization hits at just the right moment to give you an excuse to leave the room during the credits
Thanks for the excellent review. I just watched the movie yesterday on Funimation and liked it a lot. Admittedly I first found Rengoku to be hollow, speaking tritely in a bland, under-the-top manner. As the film progressed, though, my opinion changed. The apparent hollowness actually encompasses essentially an infinite depth, with the core so deep it is very difficult to fathom. What I had thought to be a facade is what he actually strives to be on every level.
I think I major theme of Demon Slayer is the value of life. The Battle of Rengok and Akaza was about the limits of talent vs infinite training with immortal regeneration.
A combination of continuous suicide, minor gore and constant body horror with a f**kload of fleshy tentacles, eyes and other crap straight out of Lovecraft/Warhammer chaos spawns. At least that's my theory.

I was very impressed. It was a fun experience.

No. The dream starts when Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke go all "Big Brother!" and the animation gets weird. The demons Kyojuro fought at the start were real, you even see the first one at the end of ep 25 I believe?
I feel like the story gets demon slayer to a 6/10, the animation makes it a 12/10
It's rated R because the MPAA hates, and I mean dispises, dismemberment.
When I watched this Movie a Thunderstorm popped off hard during the final fight and damn if that didn't heighten the mood.

Honestly, the moment Akaza appeared was when the movie really 'started'.
Man I said this before, but it really sucks that this got snubbed at the Oscars. Like, it’s not the best animated movie of all time, but come on, the competition was super slim in this year’s animated category, this should have at least gotten a nomination.
Sorry you're wrong films like boss baby and Shaun the Sheep: Farmageddon. Are just too good and deserved the nomination more.

I completely disagree lmao idek what else was in that category but I'm not surprised demon slayer didn't win I didn't like the movie at all
The Oscars and other awards shows generally pick dramas over anything else, which is why you get the same type of movies that are nominated. They tend to do a better job of showing off emotions and thus are considered as better acted. The one thing that Demon Slayer definitely does well are its action sequences. Unfortunately, there isn't a category for that last I checked.
The animation was breathtaking, when I first saw the train I thought we were in the wrong movie theater because it looks so realistic.
This movie so was beautiful. Nothing felt rushed and characters were good as in the anime. People are pretty stupid for thinking this series is carried solely on animation. Rengoku is the goat and the fact that he lost is SO unique to me. Tanjiro didn't even save the day here.
"People are pretty stupid for thinking this series is carried solely on animation."
If you _actually_ paid attention to people's criticisms, you would know that "carried by animation" does not mean "the story is shit." Most people who criticize it acknowledge its value... which is why people say that it is carried.
To people who consume this type of medium frequently, it is yet another moment (though that's not to say that it wasn't cool as hell).

I mean, when you first read the Train arc chapters, did you think Akaza was particularly interesting?

Season 2 bud. Youll see :)

Seeing this in the cinema was such a delight, I'm thrilled to have had the opportunity
Mother’s basement: “Akaza isnt really a nuanced, or strongly motivated villain”
me after final season: *oh how the turn tables*
Yay I'm so glad you got the video up again!
“Set Your Heart Ablaze!” - Rengoku
I was so excited for this video. Nailed it man!
I'm really looking forward in some long years when the story progresses and they actually show Akaza's backstory.
Spoiler: its as emotional as it gets
Thanks for the excellent review. I just watched the movie yesterday on Funimation and liked it a lot. Admittedly I first found Rengoku to be hollow, speaking tritely in a bland, under-the-top manner. As the film progressed, though, my opinion changed. The apparent hollowness actually encompasses essentially an infinite depth, with the core so deep it is very difficult to fathom. What I had thought to be a facade is what he actually strives to be on every level.
And... Inosuke!
this line cracked me up way more than it should have
I think I major theme of Demon Slayer is the value of life.
The Battle of Rengok and Akaza was about the limits of talent vs infinite training with immortal regeneration.
I'd bet money on the reason for the R-rating is entirely due to the self-harm scenes, tasteful and more alluded to than shown as they were.
Yeah, I always assumed the R rating came from all the continuous suicide, which is understandable lol
A combination of continuous suicide, minor gore and constant body horror with a f**kload of fleshy tentacles, eyes and other crap straight out of Lovecraft/Warhammer chaos spawns. At least that's my theory.
I seen this in theaters, the final fight was amazing to watch the audience reaction. It was like a rollercoaster going up and down. Cheers and crying.... Then back to cheers and crying. From, he's got this, to, oh god he's going to die, to no, this Chad of chads is still alive and he's winning. It was something amazing. It even passes the marvel movies too with the crowd reaction. I was very impressed. It was a fun experience.
17:01 mans gonna be eating his words when we get akaza's backstory in the anime
Yeah, that's what... most of four cours and another movie away? So, maybe someone will remember to remind him to eat his words in two to four years when we're at the end of the castle arc and about to fight for the dawn but I'm not holding my breath on that.
“it does not do to dwell in dreams or fixate on the past. We must keep pushing forward through life’s hardships. But, if we do all we can for others in the time we’re given we can in the time we’re given when we do reach it’s end we can at least meet our loved ones with pride”
That made me tear up
Jeff: Akaza is very simple not too much to him
Me: *screams in manga reader*
Review was solid. I always love hearing your takes on my favorite animes.
Movie for me was a solid 10/10. I came into it with no expectations and no prior warnings. Movie had me feeling every damn emotion possible, the death of my second favorite character had me in tears in the theater.
When it takes around a year to add subtitles in a movie based off of one of your favorite shows: *feels bad man*
Banger video, Geoff
No. The dream starts when Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke go all "Big Brother!" and the animation gets weird. The demons Kyojuro fought at the start were real, you even see the first one at the end of ep 25 I believe? Enmu killed people and slayers on days before Kyojuro and the trio got there, that's why Kyojuro and them were sent there, because people kept dying. Enmu says the spell on the tickets takes time to be effective
I just watched it last night amd woke up to this! I feel blessed
Someone the theater unapologetically yelled out “he ain’t beating goku”. Yeah it was me what of it
Glad to see you got to watch the movie. Hope you get to see it in theaters. I always enjoy your focused reviews and this one was no different. Great stuff.
Would you be willing to do a fight review of saber alter vs rider from fate/stay night heaven's feel 3
I went and seen it the day it was released here in Texas and I loved it; so beautifully crafted and seamless
