  • Review of the new Santa Cruz Blur plus a quick comparison to the 5010. Two things I forgot to mention: 1) the cable setup out-of-the-box is a bit gnarly, I had the LBS trim them down and, the SC factory routed them a bit differently than I was expecting, and 2) I also tried an Epic Comp Carbon (used it in an XC race), and these bikes were very similar - almost indistinguishable in my eyes! The Blur may have been a tad more maneuverable with the Epic slightly more stable, but only slightly.

    Update: I think I found the limit of the Aspen tires on loose sandy and light gravel. I will be upgrading to some Racing Ralphs or Fast Tracks

    The Tallboy does everything the 5010 does, only better. Also, shout out to SE Michigan! (Trenton)

    Would love more videos of your bike. I started XC racing this year and really like it. I’m coming from a Bronson and the bob and weight are killing my flow. Would love to hear about your race experience with it, tires, and any other observations. Any reason not to go for the highball?

    • @bensnyder2057
      @bensnyder2057  6 лет назад +1

      GhettoMoto my next race was postponed due to weather, will report back. Yeah the Bronson, like the 5010, would be a lot of bike for an XC race. I considered the Highball but read that although HTs may be faster, they take more average power to do so due to loss of traction (GCN video on this). Not to mention that I’m not getting any younger and so a little squish is kinder to your body.

      @bensnyder2057  6 лет назад +1

      I would add, I don’t like the Highball’s colorways haha you should like how your bike looks!

      @ghettomoto3804 6 лет назад

      sorry to hear your race was postponed...have you done any racing on it? Good points about the body and not getting a HT...that's what everyone is telling me too. I'm really interested in this bike but no shop in the Seattle area has one to actually test ride. It's odd...I might have to take a trip to the Santa Cruz HQ to test it, which wouldn't be that bad I guess.

      hahaha, what do you have against purple?! I'm kidding and I completely get it. I have a matte black bronson now so i'm torn if I get the "sunset" or the black if I did get the Blur.

    Just replace the cables with slightly longer ones to get them out of the way

    • @bensnyder2057
      @bensnyder2057  6 лет назад +2

      There may have only been one issue and in retrospect, I think it was the bike shop's fault. The right cable was routed through the right frame port while the left cable was routed through the left frame port - ordinarily this is reversed. Although, there did seem to be an extraordinary amount of cable to begin with too.

    You said you are on a Large. Can I ask how tall you are? Also, how long is the stem that came with the bike?
    Thanks!

      @bensnyder2057  6 лет назад +1

      FloCycling yep, I’m 6’2” with a 34” IS. I want to say the stem is ~100mm, I’m out of town and can’t measure it. Note that for the Blur, the sizing chart puts someone at my height on an XL, but I love this fit.

    Wait are those zip ties holding the cable along the frame 🧐... really high end bike and you see zip ties ... #noclassSC#cleanitup

    • @bensnyder2057
      @bensnyder2057  5 лет назад +1

      I suspect that those are from my LBS actually... unless SC sends the bikes with the cables routed and attached? The cables were also routed a bit strangely where they usually cross and enter their opposite sides, these were splayed apart and enter the frame on their respective sides, also something I believe my LBS did.

    I’ve got a 5010 built up ‘brolo’ style. 35mm stem, (sometimes run a 50) 30mm rise bars, 140mm pike, cane creek coil, 2.5 shorty up front, 2.4 high roller out back. Race it a lot at enduros and mini downhills and I absolutely love it! The perfect one bike for the uk! Jumps, races, xc rides. Does it all with a quick stem, shock, and tyre change!! That said, I’ve been thinking about entering some local xc races and also having a second bike, specifically built up light for longer 40-50 mile rides. As a Santa Cruz fan boy I’ve got my eye on a Tallboy (2 not 3 as I’m wanting steeper, more xc geometry) or a new blur. as an owner of both, can you (or anyone reading this) see any negatives in this plan? would my 5010 built with a longer stem, lighter tyres and the air shock back on be too good (by comparison) to justify a whole new bike purchase in your opinion? I test rode lots of bikes when choosing my 5010 but this will be a bit of a ‘punt’ and I won’t be test riding anything. Sorry for the essay! 😂

      I'll be honest, if you have money to burn, buy a new bike :P If you don't have disposable income and/or kid's college funds to pay for, at the very least, keep your 5010 for a season of XC racing to see what you can accomplish. I did a whole season of beginner racing on my stock 5010 and probably could have been competitive in sport, but the 5010 was just overkill for almost all of our trails. Where the 5010 shined was our local bike park-like trail with jumps etc. If you're going to get into racing (passionately into it - training and competing) you should get as close to an XC bike as you can get and I don't think the Tallboy hits that mark compared to all the modern XC bikes on the market. I suspect you will end up with a 5010 that's not quite a downhill bike and a Tallboy that's not quite an XC race bike.

    • @0kojack0
      @0kojack0 5 лет назад

      Ben Snyder Cheers for the reply. I certainly wouldn’t say I’ve got money to burn but I am fortunate enough that I can treat myself to a new bike every 3 years......that time has come! :) already have a downhill bike (which I barely use as I race my 5010 because most uk downhill races are ‘mini downhills’ and don’t really require a big bike! ) and I’ll never sell my 5010! I Love that thing way too much! training is 100% what I plan to focus on for the foreseeable future. while the 5010 can do the miles, id like a second bike for eating up the training miles without having to change tyres, shock and stem to optimise the 5010. xc rides on a 2.5 shorty and coil aren’t thaaaaaat fun 😂 Plan is to leave the 5010 set up for smiles and have a 29er set up for miles. That said, I want to be careful not buy a second bike and end up with what’s effectively two 5010’s set up differently! (I haven’t got that kind of money to burn) haha. wouldn’t rule out another brand, but as I say, I’m a fan of Santa Cruz and the lifetime warranty and bearing replacement is a massive bonus when you live in a wet, grey uk! all things considered and a touch of favouritism is pointing towards a blur

      @@0kojack0 Of course, I'm happy to talk bike options! Let me confuse your options a little more :) Give the Highball some serious consideration too. It's nice to have diametrically opposite bikes to give you more of a range of feelings, experiences, and capabilities. A hardtail will make any trail come alive unlike any other bike, it will climb like a motor bike, and will be blazing fast. To add, it would be more capable for gravel and cyclocross, should you ever want to give those a try. You'll love the Blur, but don't overlook the new Highball.

    • @0kojack0
      @0kojack0 5 лет назад +1

      Ben Snyder Haha! Noooo, I don’t need more options 😂 Although tbh, i rode trials and bmx through my teens and into my early 20’s so my days of no suspension are well and truly behind me 😂 i like a bit of comfort 10 years on 😂 I do have a ragley blue pig hardtail but tbh that rarely sees the light of day!

    Why did you prefer the blur over the 5010? Weight?

    • @bensnyder2057
      @bensnyder2057  4 года назад +1

      carlos alvarez the trails I ride are very tame. In fact I just ordered a highball 🙂

    • @carlingas666
      @carlingas666 4 года назад

      Ben Snyder the blur is basically a highball but with rear suspension, right? In your opinion the blur is way faster than the 5010? Is the 5010 slow on the climbs?

    • @bensnyder2057
      @bensnyder2057  4 года назад +1

      carlos alvarez The 5010 is a trail bike with longer travel suspension than the blur. It is a little heavier too. The blur is an xc race bike with short travel. The highball is an xc race bike with no suspension. It is the lightest of their mtb line and the least “burly” or ready to take on chunky trails.

    • @carlingas666
      @carlingas666 4 года назад

      Ben Snyder yes I know but my question is there a lot of difference in weight and climbing between the 5010 and blur. I want a jack of all trades bike that’s why I liked the 5010 but I want it to be a good climber

    i have a 5010 and was thinking of getting the blur as a 2nd bike. do you think theyre too similar?

    • @bensnyder2057
      @bensnyder2057  6 лет назад +1

      I'd say it's dependent on what type of riding you primarily do. For me, the 5010 is too heavy and sluggish for XC races, but I also didn't want a pure XC race bike (hard tail, super light, leaving you feeling beat up after a long ride). This is a do everything bike for folks that live in locations that don't have a ton of tech, big boulders, and large drops. It has enough suspension for well built jumps and features. Whereas if you are including super chunky trails or trails with rough/long jumps, hard drops etc, you could benefit from also having the 5010 in your stable. Note: I bottomed out the rear suspension once or twice jumping it, but I didn't notice or have any adverse reactions.

      Hey Ben, great review and couldn't agree with you more on how capable the Blur is. Proud owner of an XO1 CC build here! Curious to know what your thoughts are on the brakes and tires now that you've certainly had a bit more experience on the bike. I'm considering going to a beefier tire set up, but confused as to which to go with without trying to turn this into an Enduro rig by going with a Minion or Butcher tire up front. The level brakes seem to work well, but I'm 205lbs thus probably going to up the rotors to the 180's F/R for just in case purposes.
      Any who, would like to here your thoughts and possible see a follow up review after a good amount of miles. Subscribed and looking forward to your answers and or more videos on it. Cheers!

      Fyi, I was 200 lbs 2 years ago so, I feel ya. I'm ~175 lbs now, and still, no issues with this bike's stopping power or grip with the out-of-the-box tires and brakes. At 205 lbs though, you might benefit from a larger rotor. As a matter of example, in DH you'd see rotor sizes like ~200mm whereas the Blur is much more in line with XC rotor sizes (~140/50/60mm). My SC 5010 has 180mm rotors and on the trails I frequent, I haven't noticed a difference in stopping power. You'd just need to get out and see what limits there might be.
      In terms of tires, on my 5010 I have the 2.25" Crossmark on the front and a 2.25" Racing Ralph on the back. The Minion DHF that came on the front was a monster and the new tire setup was great for me (though RRs have thin sidewalls and there have been reports of issues - none from me). A friend of mine also has an SC Blur and he just replaced both tires with one he swears by, the Specialized Fast Trak. Good luck! That's a super nice build of the Blur!

      Miguel Navarro I went with Dhf up front, aspen in the back. Loving it Careful with that 180 rotor... The SC fork seems a little fragile. Do you have sram or Shimano brakes? Mine is the XE so I've got xt

      I just bought this bike two weeks ago - four rides in and I love it! To add to the tire discussion, these were the first thing to go for me. I didn't give them a proper chance (swapped them out before I even had it all together), but was really concerned about the grip they'd provide on anything other than hardpack. I swapped them out to the Specialized Fast Trak 2.3, which have been a great for the last few years I've been using them.

    • @bensnyder2057
      @bensnyder2057  6 лет назад +3

      Is there some correlation between compatibility and price that I don't know about? Haha... I have a box full of bottle cages, this is the one I prefer as it offers a speedy bottle entry and exit. I consider the cable placement on the Blur a design flaw - bottles sizes are all pretty standard, no reason I should have to hunt for the perfect bottle cage on a bike. Still love the bike, and this is minor.

    • @johnburmeister7167
      @johnburmeister7167 6 лет назад +1

      No, there's just plenty of bottle cages that are cheap and don't need to be hack sawed to fit. You can get a set of carbon ones on ebay for ~13$. Just saying you made a large investment in a nice bike, what's a few more dollars for something that works as is and keeps the aesthetics of the bike looking good.
