    The Onewheel has essentially changed my entire approach to life (only about 400 miles on my XR); I’ve become pretty much constantly aware of my body and my balance, and I really appreciate TFL and the Learning With Leary series-really dig the technical breakdowns of the Onewheel and the riding mechanics. You guys are great. Float on my friends.🤙

    Knowing about this video would have been helpful 3 weeks ago when I was arguing with a moron on the internet that was trying to explain to me how to keep my body weight behind the wheel while accelerating by "pushing down with my front foot." I tried explaining that this was physically impossible but the fact he had "1500 miles" to my 100 made him absolutely convinced he was right.

    3:00 - I loved that.
    Soooo, seemingly it is the angle of the board, rather than weight distribution in isolation, but weight distribution is the method for controlling the angle of the board, so that is what should be focused on either way.
    If one tries to accelerate via only changing the angle of the board, without putting their weight to the front of the board... then the board will go that way a tiny bit, but that action will then very quickly mean that your weight distribution is now on the other side of the board, which will then make the board tip the other way, changing the angle of the board to the opposite side, and so you will now go backwards...
    I think.
    The board goes where it's angled, but weight distribution is what determines that angle.
    Then there's pushback where the nose is raised up, which can confuse and make people panic in the moment, since the angle should mean that they slow down, but the same weight distribution principal applies, it's just that the board is at a different angle due to pushback.
    I think. lol.

    Great info as always! 👍
    I'm now over 5000 miles on my XR with mainly fast urban riding, and my technique is to accelerate in "bursts" then immediately center my mass over the wheel for sustained speed between bursts.
    During a burst of acceleration I dont really push the nose down, what I do is push the board behind me, but at the same time keeping my feet level to the ground. Forcing my feet, they MUST be level to the ground. That allows a burst of hard acceleration for a couple of seconds but the nose of the board can't go down. Occasionally when I'm pushing it hard I can feel a little "dip" where the nose tries to nosedive because i pushed harder than the board can cope, but that's fine I immediately back off and it can never dive.
    Also because I accelerate in bursts I only have to be super careful about the nose dips during a burst, the rest of the time at steady speed I can relax.
    Its a lot easier to do than my clumsy explanation, and really suits urban riding which is constantly speeding up/slowing down for footpaths, ramps, people etc. 🙂

    There goes my whole strategy. Thanks prof, i will be pondering this one for a while. Fortunately, my big brother will be in town for some major riding. We will discuss. Aoxomoxoa

    that was legit LwL. I totally have been the push the foot down lean back. If I engage my body I feel the board start to tip forward. It just feels really loose forward. Is that the balance point I should be focusing on ?
    Thanks you guys. this series is great. and you float life content is fantastic.

      What do you mean by feels loose?

    • @stompyd
      @stompyd 3 года назад

      @@TheFloatLife it's as if there is a momentary loss of center from the board. It has the quick feeling of diving, which causes me to initiate a quick shift backwards (front foot pressure to rear foot pressure). if Im going uphill, I get the surge Ive heard about. (im totally siked you responded!)

    • @TheFloatLife
      @TheFloatLife  3 года назад

      @@stompyd that sounds like a surge! Sometimes you accelerate too fast for the motor to handle well and the nose dips down really fast, and then comes back up really fast to correct itself. Try to avoid pushing the board to a surge! The episode coming out on Tuesday will have a lot more detail on body position, I think it will answer your question better than I can here, let us know!

    It took me a while to understand why, if you can tilt the board without shifting your weight, you can't accelerate this way. I think it comes down to the complex relationship between your body and the board as it accelerates. Calling upon my high school physics, if the board is accelerating, then your center of weight actually needs to be slightly ahead of the wheel so that the normal force of gravity can balance the forward force the board exerts on your feet. Same reason that when you are turning, you need to lean into the turn. If your weight is centered when the board moves, it just starts to spin your body rather than moving your center of gravity forward, and quickly your weight has shifted enough relative to the board that you can't help tilting it back towards you.

      That is correct! There is a really good diagram if you google image search "physics behind segway" that shows all the forces. If you factor in wind resistance, then your body weight will need to be ahead of the tire when cruising at a steady speed as well! (even though acceleration = zero)

    Can you relate the board angle and acceleration for hopping down a curb? I still hit the curb with my tail too often.

    • @JakeLeary
      @JakeLeary 3 года назад

      For smooth curb drops, you want the board tilting down for the whole process so that the tail doesn't smack, and your body ahead of the tire so that when you land you accelerate naturally. In other words, you want to be accelerating the whole time, so it helps to slow down before or approach very slow. so that you have room to accelerate. I find it helpful to approach at a 45 degree angle but some people find the opposite.

    • @TheAnimeist
      @TheAnimeist 3 года назад

      @@JakeLeary Okay, I finally figured it out, thanks to you. My problem was not understanding that tilting the board does not translate to acceleration. Now I understand it's the change in center of gravity that influences the acceleration. Now I just have to learn to tame/get used to the acceleration when I land.

    I fought the hell out of gravity at the park today. I lowered my treaded tire to 11psi and I was flying over speed bumps catching air n going through all the grass was mad fun n chill.

    • @JakeLeary
      @JakeLeary 3 года назад

      Leave SimpleStop on while you are practicing. Practice balancing at a total standstill, and once you can stay steady, work on the dismount. To dismount, transfer all the weight on your front foot from heel to toe. Make sure the board stays totally level until the board clicks off.

    Jake... Every day I see on the internet the advice, "keep your weight over the wheel"... Every time, I try to tell them it's impossible... I use the simplest math and analogies, but they are just too stubborn, too stupid... I link them this video, they only watch the first minute before your "however!" explanation and think you're agreeing with them... I'm tired, Jake. How do we make it stop??
