    I made this Fold-Up Work Table to save space in my small shop. I plan to use it for a CNC machine so I can fold it up between projects, but the same idea would work for a space-saving workbench, assembly table, or craft table.

    Great idea, Steve! Using it for your CNC, you'll most likely wind up adding a thicker top to the table. A half sheet of 1/2" MDF would probably do it, and 3/4" MDF would certainly do it. Vibration of that thin top might end up being a factor. My cnc vibrates slightly when the bit is cutting, and 1/4" plywood has a lot of flex to it. I could be totally wrong about your CNC, but it's something to think about anyway. When you get your CNC set up on it and running, watch it as you move it around on the X and Y axis. Pay particular attention to the table when you move it along an axis, then stop moving it. If the table rocks in the direction of travel when you stop it, you might need to brace the table a bit to prevent that rocking. The table looks pretty tight as built, so that may not be a concern, but it's something to watch for in the beginning. As someone else has already mentioned, your CNC is going to create a ton of dust itself, so you might want to consider a dust collection system for it. Otherwise you're going to need an air hose to find the drumsticks, and a respirator to play your kit (nice looking kit, BTW!) All in all, I like that table design. The wife could use a couple in her craft room. Thanks for the idea!

    • @SteveCarmichael
      @SteveCarmichael  9 лет назад

      Mark Lindsay Thanks for the suggestions Mark! Yeah, I agree the 1/4 table may flex too much. I may have to get a whole sheet cut in half since they don't sell the mdf at HD or Lowes in 4x4 size. Will do an update video for sure when I get it all worked out.

    Nice looking table.
    Since you mention the sturdiness of the top, something to consider is to move the legs to the outside of the top and attach a panel on the bottom side. This will turn the top into a torsion box which will be even more sturdy than only adding bracing or a only a thicker top surface. You could use 1/4" and add a small amount of weight while adding a lot of strength.
    As always, I enjoy your videos.

    • @SteveCarmichael
      @SteveCarmichael  9 лет назад

      Barry's Workshop Great suggestion Barry! I might have to do that. I don't have much faith in just the 1/4" top, but it's all I could get at the moment. I will most likely have to buy a full sheet and cut it in half anyway. Thanks!!!

    Thanks for the plans and video. I made one for my X-carve, which is now in the corner of the dining room. The only hick up I hit was that I don't have a drill press, and my hand drilled holes for the hinge bolts weren't very straight. But with a bit of hammering it still works, although I need a prop to keep the legs open nicely.

    • @SteveCarmichael
      @SteveCarmichael  8 лет назад

      +Mike Byrne I used a clamp a couple of times to keep the legs in place, but I've found it's really not needed since the weight holds it in place. As long as you don't have other people around who might kick the legs in, it should be alright.

    Thanks for the design inspiration Steve! I made a few slight variations on your design to fit my shop and it works great. One thing in particular that streamlined the whole thing was to flip the carriage bolts on the T-legs so the round heads act like detents to hold the folding legs in place when the table is vertical. It also cut out the step of notching the bottoms of those legs.

    This would be a perfect assembly table for my one car garage since I still park the car in there and only move it out when I'm working. Maybe I could put some locking casters on the base end to make it easier to move in and out of my little corner of the garage. Thanks for the inspiration!

    Awesome project, and a great space saver! For something to keep the legs from getting kicked out from under it, why not add a link between the "back" and "front" legs to keep them parallel? That way the support legs fold down automatically when you lower it. Try googling "parallelogram linkage" if you don't know what I mean.

    Sharing a space with your instruments is great. Just work on your dust control to keep from having CNC dust all over your music! You could use a 'plastic tent' type enclosure, but you still need to extract the small dust particles, not just 'chips'. ... Just a hint!

    As I haven't got a CNC Machine I would try and build that, and use it as an extra prep table or even an out feed table. As with all my tables etc I have in the shed they are on wheels as no room, so this one would probably have some attached as well, it would also be very handy with it being a fold down table.

    Hey Steve! Just a few thoughts, If you fix the legs a bit further in so when the open they are at an angle pressing against the frame, that would help stabilize them better and you wouldn't need a screw or bolt to hold them in place. Also the 1/4 plywood may not be thick enough to hold your CNC machine, it could tear out over time. I would add braces underneath for support where you attach it to the top. Also why not use 1 x 4 lumber to lighten the tables over all weight, would it not be strong enough? Just a few thoughts but over all a great project, Thanks for the video!

      John Sellers Thanks for the great suggestions John. I like the leg idea...reminds me of the cornhole game legs. I have doubts about the 1/4 top too. It's light which is a plus, but will need bracing underneath when I attach everything. I got the 2x4s to build a 4x4 workbench, but decided to make this instead and I already had the 2x4s. I think the 1x material might flex too much.

    Finally got around to watching this and the timing is perfect! Have the same CNC on the way and am thinking that I will make a table that will fold up into a box on the wall. Might try to support the gantry with a housing for all the components but that remains to be seen. Do you have a measurement for how high the top of the X-Carve is from the bottom of the sacrificial cutting board?

      ***** Hi Tyler - I'm working on a follow up video for this week. Will show the xcarve on the table and show how it folds up. I will try to include the exact width, depth, and height in the video. It folds up great btw.

    Great idea .... however to get over this problem at a place I used to work at, I simply mounted the CNC machine's bed directly to the wall (ours was a brick wall, but into the wall studs should be just as good). A couple of T-Bolt tracks with a bar between them allows the work piece to be clamped to the table. The CNC machine doesn't care that it is now vertical instead of horizontal. The only problem is if you do a full depth cut, the cut-out section will fall out if it hasn't been double-side-taped to the machine bed.

    • @SteveCarmichael
      @SteveCarmichael  9 лет назад

      CodeFoxAus I mentioned that to some friends, but wasn't sure if it would work with the xcarve. That would be cool though. I may fold up the table and try it...that would be a fun experiment as long as I don't break something. Thanks for the suggestion!

      Steve Carmichael I should mention that ours was worm-gear driven X-Y-Z, not belts, so gravity didn't really have much impact in loading down the drive as the load of the drive head was on the gear rather than the motor.

    I like your fold-up work table Steve. I think your videos are great with good lighting and audio and camera angles that offer a clear view of the work.I know you made this video a while back but you asked for comments on the table. I question if a 2x4 frame with 1/4 top is sturdy enough. Yes, it will support the X-Carve but will it be stable. Did you consider making a torsion box top? I would add some leveling screws to the bottom of your legs so you can get the table top reasonably flat. Did you end up beefing up the table top as you suggested you might need to?

    • @SteveCarmichael
      @SteveCarmichael  7 лет назад

      Hi Bob, thanks! It really saves a lot of space my my drum room. I haven't needed to change the table at all. It works just fine. I haven't noticed any issues with the stuff I've made, but then I don't make anything that has to be really precise. I did make parts for a guitar once but they fit together fine. I think the torsion box would be best, but it's kind of overkill for what I do with it.

    Steve, awesome video and a great idea. I would even consider for my workbench but I need to have a full enclosure for the device as I am doing work where noise and dust isolation are a must. What do you think of a 4 ft x 4ft enclosure that has a sliding tray so that you can partially pull out the XCarve for cleaning? I am working with some carpenters in my area and we will try to design such a thing. Maybe you would want to tackle an enclosure project in the future? I am subscribing to your channel today.

      TJ Woodworkshop It would work great for an assembly table. I was going to add wheels but I don't have room to move it around. lol The garage floor is so uneven, I may have to put bolts on the bottom of the legs so I can adjust them to level out the table.

    Great! I'm just worried about the CNC, do you think you will need to calibrate it everytime you set it back in horizontal position? I don't how the cnc bears with this kind of things. Anway that's a nice folding table!

      Yes, however it stays folded up most of the time since it's in my son's practice room. I can fold it down and start cutting within about 15 minutes. I haven't had any trouble cutting out stuff. I always check the four corners to make sure the clearance is about the same.

Also I can't wait to make the bandsaw jewelry box that you made for your girl. As you know you can't make that one with a little bench top. Also I'm pulling for you in that 2x4 contest. Hi Steve, I'm really amazed when found this project, I really love it, I just get my XCarve and search around for a solution to suit my needs and this is definetly the one, I just have a question, Whats the size of the separator table you used to make the holes to de folding legs, I mean the wood strip you used as guide. I think is around 10" but not shure, hope can get this response.

    • @SteveCarmichael
      @SteveCarmichael  7 лет назад +1

      Hey, the holes are about 13" in from the back edge of the table, because the max height of the x-carve is about 13". That way neither the x-carve or the table hits the wall. You might want to check yours to make sure it needs the same clearance.

    • @fabricaderockolas2315
      @fabricaderockolas2315 7 лет назад
