In day 3 of this free surf skate course we will move from the street to the ramp (or any inclined surface you can find). This session is where we go from understanding the fundamentals in the flats and take things into the realm of simulating 3 dimensional surfing.
If you have only ever skated on a flat surfaces you are about to be opened up to a whole new world.... get ready for the stoke.
    ________________________________________________________________________
Today is all about choosing the right line. This is a place where I'm at currently in my surfing. It sounds simple, but it's pretty complicated. So lets dive in.
All right, if you're riding a bicycle wherever you wanted it to go, you'd look, and by looking where you want to turn to, you can start to adjust whether you want more turning, less turning, lower, higher, all of that information.
You don't even think about it. Like you don't do the math, to do that turn in the bicycle, but somehow you can feel it.
Now the problem with surfing and, especially on skateboards, guys look down at their board and try slide it around.
They never look at the line that they want to take on the wave and figure out well, if I do that turn, what's the outcome going to be?
Am I going to come out at what speed?
Am I going to lose speed?
Where do I want to go to next?
    They're not thinking ahead.
And then what happens is their surfing becomes very stop start. They do a turn, they stop and it's like, "oh, I got to create speed again". And they're almost go into like panic and flat mode where they've got to rush to get speed.
Whereas if they pick the line and figure out where to want to be after that turn, and it's almost got to set you up for the next 10.
So you want your surfing to flow and not to be stopped, start and lose speed.
Let's get into the exercise now.
You're going to need to find a bowl. You're going to need to find a ramp or find a driveway about, so you can start to get yourself in that off balance position.
What I did there was a vertical turn where if you look, I will go straight up and down.
The problem with that, and let's be honest. How many of you people surf vertically?
In other words, you bottom turn and going up and turning vertically away and make a Mick Fanning or a John John?
I know that I still don't do it myself.
I'm more trying to get some speed. I'm going down the line and I'm doing more sort of like carving surfing. And it's purely because of the type of waves that we ride. It doesn't always stand up.
In all honesty, this is more the line that I'm taking when I surf.
You'll notice that that line over there is a quicker line than the up, turn, come down. Now, if I did that line, like I was skating on a street whereby I'm not really leaning, I'm not going too fast. You'll see. It feels a little bit awkward. So I'm going to keep my head up straight. It's not nearly as quick.
Now, if I try to speed up the technique and just... Like the guys do on the surf skate on the street where they just rush the turn. Let's see what happens.
Huh. It feels really, really awkward.
All Right. Now what I'm going to do is, if you have a look here, I'm going to take my skateboard and match that angle. But I'm also going to incline my body into that angle. I'm going to be vertical to the surface of the ramp that I'm on. So it's going to be like my head's tilting my ears leaning and let's see what that does to my speed difference.
Okay. So pretty much what it means is that by dipping my head over and leaning and getting more parallel to that skate ramp. Because my head's leaning over, it's making me weightless, but also gravity's taken that weight and wanting to pull me down the ramp, which is actually making me turn faster.
By taking the right line and applying the right technique, you can get more speed through the turn.
Now, if you're surfing laterally, you kind of want to maintain speed through that figure eight. You don't want to go and lose speed. Because if the waves is flatter, it can't give you speed back. Or if you midface, you can't get that speed back.
You kind of want to flow through the turn, maintaining your speed. If you watch the difference here, I'm go through numbers two and four creating flow. Now most of the flow comes from going up and down. Want to go faster, I dip my head.
The big takeaway there, I was doing no wiggle between any of the turns I was compressing and extending. I was doing figure eights. I was picking my line and I was maintaining speed through all of those turns.
And if you can surf a wave like that with speed and flow.
I think you're going to love the feeling of surfing.

Finally! Someone is able to identify and explain what’s been holding back my surfskate progression.
I have been surfskating for a couple years now. I didn’t have any previous experience on a skateboard so it’s been a slow and sometimes painful process. Like many others, I’ve watched hundreds on instructional videos on techniques and equipment to help my development. All of which have been very helpful. But for me this one is a game changer. Thank you!

Wow that attention to detail is just amazing! The tilting of the head/ear is amazingly well explained, can't wait to try that out!

Thanks for the good video! Which carver model, length, and trucks are you riding here? Are those the stock wheels included on that model? Also, do you leave the trucks with the factory tightness or loosen/tighten them? Lastly, do you have the blueprints for your ramp?

It's seems easy when Clayton did it, but I fear that when I'll do this I'll be kissing the land with my face 😁. But, I can't wait to try it.

This would be better if you put cut of surfing that mimics thous maneuvers. If you don't have it the program already.

Hi Guys I just want to say i love your videos and find it the most informative regarding surfing. I am thinking of getting a Surfscate but i have a problem were i skate goofy footed and i surf natural footed. should i start over and learn to skate natural rather, as i don,t skate as often and also haven't skated in a few years. Maybe a idea for a video tutorial LOL. Great content love you videos

Learn to ride skateboard both natural AND goofy if you can. Or just natural if that’s too confusing.
If not, be in goofy position on board but add in moments of riding it switch (backwards).
Try your rear foot off the tail and nearer the rear truck bolts if that helps. Turn both feet 45° towards the front. Not safe on hills but fine on the flat.

You might prefer a front truck that tilts only, the tilt and rotate front trucks can be extra tricky.
I ride a Yow Pukas with S5 truck on flat & sloping car parks for technique building, but ride a regular street skateboard on hills & ramp (more stable, easier to stop).

Do you dip your head and tilt the "handle bars" on a frontside top turn? I've always had a slight pause on that turn rather than a smooth flow.
