MobileTechReview But seriously, your reviews are the best! I love how you take your time to go into details, since these devices are expensive and I would like to see it from all angles before I commit.
Preet Gurung agreed, nothing worse than seeing a "review" video and its only 3-4 minutes long. I love how in depth and accessible Mobile Tech Reviews is. Even if you don't know computers, youre definitely gonna come out knowing a lot more about a product with this channel.
Honestly, I keep seeing these comments about power but I have a MacBook Pro and I have only used it once for video editing a home movie shot on my iPhone. My needs are just surfing the net, Microsoft office suite for work (mainly Excel). I don't game at all on my laptop or do video editing. Why does every reviewer and commentary below keep bringing this stuff up when I think most people don't use their laptops for that purpose. I'm leaning on getting this for portability and light office work. I really don't get what all that extra power is for.
You are now my one stop shop for a "proper" review of hardware. You have none of the gimmicks that some of the other tech review channels on RUclips. Thanks.
This laptop is being dismissed too fast on face value. I did that as well initially until I revisited my needs for a small portable laptop with long battery life that talks to my personal devices as well as my work needs. Here are the important aspects for me. 1) Getting to use the Mac OS in a small retina form factor and using the power of Yosemite to send and receive messages and calls on the laptop as needed. Most of my employees etc have iPhones (although the texting works for non iPhones as well) 2) Able to run Windows 8 seamlessly with Parallels makes it OS-proof for any Windows centric programs I might need 3) All day battery and the ability to charge via any standard power bank 4) The support of a local Apple Store if needed 5) Super light and thin form factor. 6) I have my entire work PC hosted in the cloud by my company and run it flawlessly via the standard VMWARE app. Simply by flicking right or left I can enter into Work or Personal mode. Another flick and I can have Windows 8 running on a separate desktop as well 7) The ports are not as big a drawback if you are looking for small form factor and know the compromises. Amazon is full of USB-C to USB mini adapters for $10 and the Apple one offers HDMI and USB on one adapter. The Surface only has one USB so not sure why the big ruckus is to compare the two based on ports. The Surface is NOT a laptop for regular use. The floppy keyboard and tiny keyboard and tiny trackpad severely limit productivity on the go and requires a dedicated workspace due to the stand and floppy keyboard. The Surface is also no match as a tablet since it well has no TABLET apps...just regular windows programs that are a pain to use without the touch interface needed for tablet use. Bottomline - If you want a small form factor Macbook with retina screen this is the only option. The Air screen's are not great for 2015 standards. The Air 11 only has 2 USB ports and the 8gb/256gb model is only $100 less with a vastly inferior non IPS screen. A Macbook allows both Mac and Windows usage side by side seamlessly, making it future proof as well. The trackpad has no competitor. The Core M flies for daily tasks with no stutters. Specs are over rated with Macs since they are more tightly integrated and controlled and the experience is not determined by pure number crunching. I made the circle from Macs to Windows and now I am back to using a Mac. In the process my productivity has soared, multi tasking has been a breeze and the peace of mind of enjoying life rather than worrying about driver issues, viruses, freezes, forced updates, incompatibilities etc typically associated with pure Windows computers does not exist.
The problem with most of the reviews I've seen with this is that tech journalists aren't aware that the majority of consumers stopped using laptop ports a long time a go. Most just use their laptop for casual browsing and word processing, rarely needing a vast array of ports. This will be very popular.
Yup. A lot of times you just have to review it for yourself by checking out specs, maybe watch some example videos on the internet like unboxings, and try it out in person.
Stupid question: what are all the ports for? I only use the charger, usb and headphone ports on my macbook air. Never use the camera either, just work stuff so i'd actually consider buying this for size, weight, functionality and reliability of course, i've never had any problems with Apple products.
I use a usb mouse, external hard drive, usb fan, sd cards, and a usb fan, even in 2018. The thing that blows me aways is that when it's charging, this MacBook has _no_ ports.
MobileTechReview Make it the surface pro 3 :D lighter and so much more performance and more ports and just as thin and touch/pen can't really get better then the surface pro 3
MobileTechReview no lisa, you don't got to take commands for entitled idiots like them. screw them . I hate people expecting you to be their slave. i Wish you didn't comment the way you did, because your giving people power over you.
Great review! I don't think the installation beachballs are specific to the new Macbook. I have recently had 3 x 2014 13" and 15" rMBP's and all 6 of them hung in the same place with the Yosemite setup. Powering off and restarting the setup then worked.
I bought one, used it for several days and returned it. It's gorgeous, but the CPU is just not powerful enough, I am not talking about video editing or any heavy work, it will lag when you browse a big pdf file. I hope the skylake version will be better and I definitely will buy one.
It's a cool product. Fits my needs. Can't remember the last time I needed a USB port or any other port. My school days are over. Just need good resolution, a good build, built in wifi, bluetooth and portability. ,
So they got rid of the plastic and unibody macbook just to replace it with "this"? Instead of giving the Air a new body and retina display they came up with "this"?
The MacBook 2015 Repairability Score: 1 out of 10 (10 is easiest to repair) from ifixit.com. See details below. Proprietary pentalobe screws continue to make opening the device unnecessarily difficult, and new cable routing makes the procedure even trickier. The USB-C port is secured by tri-wing screws, and buried under the display brackets, complicating replacement. Also, being the only port, it will experience more use and wear than a typical single-purpose port. The battery assembly is entirely, and very solidly, glued into the lower case. The Retina display is still a fused unit with no separate, protective glass. If the display needs replacing, it'll cost a pretty penny. The processor, RAM, and flash memory are soldered to the logic board.
John Walsh Would you not rather have important facts before you pay your money? or find out after you have shelled out $1300 that you cannot upgrade anything because Apple have made it impossible to even upgrade something as simple as the RAM.
You are the best reviewer I have ever seen. No nonsense & kinda seem so next door with so much simplicity combined :) I love your videos.. Awesome Lisa
If you thinking to buy MacBook 12 with Retina or MacBook Air with no Retina I would suggest to wait. I'm pretty sure we would see Air Retina very soon. After MacBook 12" there's no reason why Apple would not implement Retina display in its MacBook Air lineup. Air is better in terms of specs and it actually has ports ;)
I just bought it in Space Grey to replace my old Macbook Pro 13". Great for college, very portable, sleek design, nice keyboard, looks fresh, and possibly one of the greatest designs ever made. The thinness is close to a piece a paper, literally lol If you have the money and want something more up to date cop this if not go for the Macbook Air or Pro, both are great in their own ways depending on what you're using the laptop for.
this laptop is for someone who needs an ipad but wants something more capable. if this is going to be your main computer than its a problem. for someone like me who has a 15" top spec laptop and just need somethin on the go i think it is great. yes there is the macbook air but for the minimal power i need id rather have the retina, force touch, lighter and smaller body.
It's an iPad replacement (better this with normal OS X on board than awkwardly huge 12" iPad with iOS) and I suppose, it's great if you like to carry your laptop in a small ladies purse. However this particular device is not your daily laptop replacement and it too expensive for what you are getting. MBP 13" is far more superior in terms of specs, ports and sturdiness and I think it is light enough to carry it around.
Brian the lack of ports realy isn't practical if ypu realy want apple then go with the previous macbook pro. Otherwise I would advise something like the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro or the Dell XPS 13
Brian IF price isn't a problem get a 15" macbook Pro Retina....I used a MacBook air for the first 3 years of college and upgraded to the 15" MBP Retina for my final year and the difference was night and day. The larger screen is so nice and it is slim and light enough for travel. I carried around 2 books, 4 notebooks and my MacBook along with other necessities (calculator, pens, pencils, headphones, etc) in a slim North Face Backpack and it wasn't taxing at all.
Jai Bhavnani butterfly switches probably won't be adopted by anyone else anytime soon (if it was so good, then apple would use it in the macbook air and pro).
Wawaweewa Rice I actually really like the keyboard. It takes some time to get used to but now I prefer typing on it over my MacBook Pro. Using it right now in fact.
I don't know why many people are complaining about the one port. just buy an adapter it's honestly not that big of a deal. I use ports for programming but why would I program on a laptop. much better on a desktop. This is a perfect laptop for students. I'm thinking of getting it for school and just use my old laptop or desktop for bigger programs.
I'm debating between this and the Dell XPS 13. I don't really use ports so that wouldn't be a problem for me. If I only browse, listen to music, and use Office, would you say that performance-wise it'd be a good purchase? I also understand that for what you're getting it's costly, but I played around with it at an Apple store and I really love the design, track pad, and even the keys...
MURICA. F**k Yea Yeah, I think the issue isn't even the expandability, it's the price... it'll be much better once it's $1K or less (whenever that happens).
i have macbook air 11inch model and going to upgrade to one of these the port thing is no big deal for me you can buy ports cable for it and i don't really use many ports anyway but nice review seeing some comments down below if you hate the product why comment
As an ex MacBook Air (2013edition), I moved to a Surface Pro 3 back in January and can honestly say I wont go back. This new MacBook is lovely and useable but its just not enough to take me back.
lisa, could you do (at least) a physical comparison to the xps 13 2015? i know you been doing a lot of smackdowns with that machine but iI still cant stop looking at that beauty :) cheers, eric.
The question I have is around running fairly complex excel documents, perhaps with macros. Is this computer capable of handling something like this? I need a computer for grad school (MBA) and I'm considering this, but don't know if it can handle some large excel files.
Yeah, I'll stick with my 2013 13" Air. I really can't see this new Macbook serving a real purpose for any particular demographic. Some people have suggested that it's a good choice for college students, but I'm a college student, and having to carry around an assortment of adapters 24/7 would get old very quickly. This laptop seems best suited for just sitting on a desk, at which point a Mac Mini would probably be a better option. Lol
Hi Lisa, Would you ever consider doing more Chromebook/Chromebox reviews? I'd be curious to see a review of a new model now that the OS has matured and there is better hardware out there. I've been looking to hook a Chromebox up to a TV but am not sure if that would be a good use case.
Do you think Apple will add the force touch technology to the Magic trackpad? the external trakpad they make? I think this is a well done video. Again, I thought i'd be seeing more cons about this really thin macbook, it's actually getting some really good feedback.
Lisa, I love your presentations and critiques. I would like to request a smackdown between the new Pixelbook and the 2017 Macbook (12"). Thanks for what you do!
Exciting product! Great review! After dealing with fan noise from powerful Vaios that I use for work, I decide to replace them with 'fanless' notebooks. The noise seems unbearable to me lately, mainly when working at night. I will sacrifice some performance for quietness and comfort. It's great to see these products coming up now.
Lisa, great review as always. Just received my MacBook (1.2GHz dual-core) yesterday and it's an amazing device. I use a new MacBook Pro 13 Retina for heavy lifting but new MacBook makes the Pro seem very large and heavy. As Lisa said you need to set your expectations properly for this computer. There's no way a M core is going to compete with a Broadwell i5 or i7 but for internet browsing, watching movies, and everyday computing tasks it has been a joy to use so far and the display is beautiful. Battery life is awesome. I been using it quite a bit over the last two days and still have not had to charge it. Lisa, how about a smack-down between the Yoga 3 Pro and new Asus UX305?
This pricing is actually somewhat ok. You’re paying for the “memory.” If Apple offered a 128gb version for the 12" Macbook, it would cost $1100. They did the same thing with the iPad Mini 4 by having an enlarged storage for a base model.
Hey Lisa! I've just started watching your videos and I wonder... What video editing software do you use? I used to use iMovie but I just switched to Final Cut Pro X and I think it's brilliant! :)
Another great review there Lisa. I like the new Macbook, but do I want one? Well not for me. I do need a lot of ports. I have the 2014 Macbook Pro Retina 13" and I love this machine.
In terms of CPU power: this machine is almost twice more powerful than my previous Macbook Pro 15" 2.4Ghz Late 2008, which I used until recently with no much power issues. Just saying :)
really I liked your presentation on this particular model. I bought today. the previous model used was a 13-inch MBA, which was much faster for simple tasks, such as working in email, watch some videos on Netflix, watch RUclips videos, and surf the web. because my job is public relations need to be very mobile and therefore decided to change the model of the computer and despite the slow changing screens, I'm honestly happy. This computer is really thinking for those who wanted a mix of ipad and computer. obviously you can not have everything in life.
Hi Lisa - first have always gotten a lot out of your reviews. Would this new Macbook be a strong option for a traveling exec who would use it primarily for e-mails/calendaring, presentations, docs and some spreadsheet work?
Lisa, is it wise to get the m7 model or the m5- is there much of a difference? Also, forgive me if this sounds amateurish, is there a bigger drain on battery life between the 2 models
I'm going to get this laptop. Sure it may not be powerful but that's why I have my old laptop and desktop for power. I think this would be perfect for school.
I've been avoiding reviews from other sites just to see her's first.
Preet Gurung You know how to make me smile :)

I don’t know what I’m doing here 7 years later, but one thing for sure is that this a nice review and that MacBook was ahead of its time.
the adapters should have been included for free. this is outright gouging

Jony Ive forgot to drill usb and thunderbolt ports.
kapullas lol

Drill was broken

Thumbs up for geekbench, this is the first review on youtube with actual geekbench numbers shown.
I picked up the 2017 i5/16GB Ram model and it's amazing!
You seriously have the best reviews on RUclips! I love how mix the best of a tour and an opinionated review.
I have it for a month now. It's perfect for my college life :)
Could you tell me how?
+Mac GuY17 it's compact and light.
Yeah it's not all bad.
+vuthina roeun did u get a refurbished or brand new?

I was just gonna go to bed then saw this upload haha yay MTR
Frans LifeVlogs Your wish is our command ;)

+TECH JUNKIE I never use the cameras for laptops. So that wouldn't be a problem for me honestly
its all a problem when u want to skype
I just found your channel the other day. Love your videos and love your style. Keep up the great work!
So they got rid of the plastic and unibody macbook just to replace it with "this"? Instead of giving the Air a new body and retina display they came up with "this"?
The MacBook 2015 Repairability Score: 1 out of 10 (10 is easiest to repair)
from ifixit.com.
Why are you bashing this product so hard? Hate to see what you think about that Apple watch
John Walsh Would you not rather have important facts before you pay your money? or find out after you have shelled out $1300 that you cannot upgrade anything because Apple have made it impossible to even upgrade something as simple as the RAM.
Name one recent apple product that does not have a repairability score of 1.
John Walsh Stating facts = bashing? That seems a little bit irrational.
John Walsh So your CV say that tim cook secretly pay you to make pro apple post.
You are the best reviewer I have ever seen. No nonsense & kinda seem so next door with so much simplicity combined :) I love your videos.. Awesome Lisa
Beautiful, but too small. Pro version of this with ports would be interesting.

Is this a good laptop for just a regular college student doing regular college things? Price isn't a problem here, btw.
Brian the lack of ports realy isn't practical if ypu realy want apple then go with the previous macbook pro. Otherwise I would advise something like the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro or the Dell XPS 13
Brian I would say yes. It's super portable. But just get a docking station or dongle for when you are in the dorm working.
Brian Get a PC for College. Don't get a Mac.
Brian Get the XPS 13.
All I'm interested in is how this "butterfly" switch keyboard is
Wawaweewa Rice it is so bad. you don't feel any key travel at all. its like your typing on unmovable plastic.
Jai Bhavnani butterfly switches probably won't be adopted by anyone else anytime soon (if it was so good, then apple would use it in the macbook air and pro).
Wawaweewa Rice Its different. Will take a bit to get used to, but certainly not terrible.
Wawaweewa Rice I actually really like the keyboard. It takes some time to get used to but now I prefer typing on it over my MacBook Pro. Using it right now in fact.
Interesting. I have a feeling it will cause your fingers to get sore after typing on it a lot (like a touchscreen)
I love how you show how the product actually works, rather than just benchmarks.
This is the the best keyboard Apple has done. Your typing speed goes up instantly. The satisfaction of each click is amazing.
Good review, but I would much rather see a side by side comparison with the MacBook Air 11", rather than the larger 13" MacBook Air.
I don't know why many people are complaining about the one port. just buy an adapter it's honestly not that big of a deal. I use ports for programming but why would I program on a laptop. much better on a desktop. This is a perfect laptop for students. I also understand that for what you're getting it's costly, but I played around with it at an Apple store and I really love the design, track pad, and even the keys...
Hi great review, I love how detailed you are. How do you reckon this laptop copes with macro heavy spreadsheets?
i just bought the new macbook pro, but the price for what you get on the 12" macbook is just stupid. id rather get a macbook air
MURICA. F**k Yea indeed, macbook air should have the retina dislay
MURICA. F**k Yea Except the screen on the air is not nearly as good.
Better get the pro instead. The display on the air is just crap
MURICA. F**k Yea Yeah, I think the issue isn't even the expandability, it's the price... it'll be much better once it's $1K or less (whenever that happens).
The Air will be discontinued.
I love your reviews. I always wait for your review on any new device. Hopefully we can get that SP3 vs macbook soon.
Excellent review! I liked the fact that you tested out Photoshop to show the performance. Thanks! :)
i have macbook air 11inch model and going to upgrade to one of these the port thing is no big deal for me
you can buy ports cable for it and i don't really use many ports anyway
but nice review
seeing some comments down below if you hate the product why comment
As an ex MacBook Air (2013edition), I moved to a Surface Pro 3 back in January and can honestly say I wont go back. This new MacBook is lovely and useable but its just not enough to take me back.
Been waiting for this review all week and it really has put a lot of anxiety to rest! Great review!
i would love to see how does it handle hardcore games (without fans)
lisa, could you do (at least) a physical comparison to the xps 13 2015? i know you been doing a lot of smackdowns with that machine but iI still cant stop looking at that beauty :) cheers, eric.
The question I have is around running fairly complex excel documents, perhaps with macros. Is this computer capable of handling something like this? I need a computer for grad school (MBA) and I'm considering this, but don't know if it can handle some large excel files.
I really want this for school but I am just super worried about the single port. I wish Apple would make an iPad/Mac convertible like this.
Always the best most thorough reviews, you always do the gadgets I'm thinking about, so relevant and on top of things
Great review like always, nice but I would wait until next year for the macbook with 2 USB-C .
Lol
How does the webcam work for light duty video conferencing? It was advertised as 480p but picture quality can highly depend on the optics and sensors.
Hi Lisa,
Would you ever consider doing more Chromebook/Chromebox reviews? I'd be curious to see a review of a new model now that the OS has matured and there is better hardware out there. I've been looking to hook a Chromebox up to a TV but am not sure if that would be a good use case.
Hey Lisa,
I noticed the new MS Word icon on your screen, is the new version of office for Mac out?
Do you think Apple will add the force touch technology to the Magic trackpad? the external trakpad they make? I think this is a well done video. Again, I thought i'd be seeing more cons about this really thin macbook, it's actually getting some really good feedback.
Hey Lisa, a smackdown between the macbook and the dell xps 13 non-touch :)?
How about a smackdown with Dell XPS13?
ciprian moloci lol
ciprian moloci That would be hilarious
ciprian moloci it’s too expensive
The best review I have seen of the MacBook 2015!
Very comprehensive and excellently presented.
Good review, the only thing I kind of miss is playing some games on it as you used to in other laptop reviews.
So beautiful. But I don't like the new arrow keys and esc key. Looks strange.
What MacBook would you recommend for a high school student ? (This would be my main machine)
HI, Lisa, A smack down between this device and surface pro3 or new surface 3 will be awesome!
Hello Lisa, do you know when apple might update their 15" macbook pro?
Thanks!
Makes me want one, since it’s an cheaper alternative to every Mac book I have looked at
Lisa, I love your presentations and critiques. I would like to request a smackdown between the new Pixelbook and the 2017 Macbook (12"). Thanks for what you do!
How can you exceed 100%? I never knew what this color gambit thing really was
It is Basically iPad. 2 Ports like an iPad, can't be used heavily on Professional Editing. Just a iPad but bigger and beautiful.
Great review as always Lisa! Do you know the new Macbook runs Parallels Desktop 10 at a normal speed?
i know this laptop is not the most powerful out there, not even close but but but... it's so BEAUTIFUL oh my gosh (esp. the space gray)
How does the keyboard compare with the two surface keyboards?
What do you do with the computers you review?
Can you also compare this to the dell xps 13 2015, I'd like to see how it compares not just in size, but also raw performance.
Another great review there Lisa. I like the new Macbook, but do I want one? Well not for me. I do need a lot of ports. I have the 2014 Macbook Pro Retina 13" and I love this machine.
i want a smackdown between the macbook 12-inch and the surface pro 3!! please
Nice solid even-handed review as always Lisa!
If it had maybe 2 more ports then yeah it would be perfect.
What exactly is the point of this laptop when you can get the rMBP 13 for the same price with far superior specs?
Hi Lisa - first have always gotten a lot out of your reviews. Would this new Macbook be a strong option for a traveling exec who would use it primarily for e-mails/calendaring, presentations, docs and some spreadsheet work?
Lisa, is it wise to get the m7 model or the m5- is there much of a difference? Also, forgive me if this sounds amateurish, is there a bigger drain on battery life between the 2 models
That FileVault bug happened to me too on my RMP setup :/
a comparison with the Y3P next? Sp3 shouldn't be a contender, the next SP4 though.
Please do a video comparing the top of the range Microsoft surface 3 and the top of the range MacBook
I'm going to get this laptop. Sure it may not be powerful but that's why I have my old laptop and desktop for power. I think this would be perfect for school.
Please smack down it with Surface 3 Lisa. Thanks!
WOW 1.1Ghz when overclocked. Are you sure this isn't a microwave?
Can you smack this down with the dell xps 13
can you do a comparision between macbook air 11 inch and new macbook
Lisa, can't wait to see smack down between MacBook and Dell xps 13 2015
Going to start shooting 4k videos anytime soon? :)
This new MacBook is definitely awesome but let's wait for a more powerful processor.. The MacBook Air also took its time
Have you been happy with the core M processor? I'm torn, the 13" air comes with the I series.
DO they offer a telescope with that? Will they ever build a 17 inch?
Please do a comparison smack down of this new MacBook and a German microwave: both low powered and ridiculously high priced. Thanks.
What about running InDesign and PS on the Macbook 12" ?
Hey Lisa
i was wondering, how well is its performance in the office programs. is it a smooth and fast experience?
wonderful review
