    We've been living with Apple's new MacBook for a few weeks, and sit down to discuss in-depth its technical merits and interesting design choices. Even if you're not interested in Macs, the use of Intel's Core-M chip and USB Type-C give insights into the future of mobile computing. Here's how the retina MacBook fits into Apple's laptop lineup, and how this pricey device compares to other Core M-based computers.

      @esaedvik 9 лет назад +3

      jonoc5 Downhill product wise. They're putting out utter trash and people still buy it. I wouldn't blame the company for not making any effort nowadays though. I wouldn't call a company that makes just tons of money, successful.

    • @esaedvik
      @esaedvik 9 лет назад +7

      Samtagri I've followed Apple's antics for a very long time and they're constantly releasing products they'd never have put out before Jobs died. Apple Watch is a joke in every way, similar phones with different size screens would've never gotten out before.
      Yes, other manufacturers release shit as well, but let's not go there.
      Profits do NOT make a good company for anyone else but the share holders.

    You Apple watch video convinced me not to get one. This video did not do that for me, I don't edit movies or photos, don't do anything but surf the web, watch video and write. So I bought this. I find it perfect. I got used to low lift keyboards thanks to the Microsoft surface cover, different blue tooth keyboards and even typing on my iPad. I find the keyboard to be very accurate and easy to type on. The only thing I have plugged in is the power, so one usb c is fine for me.
    To anyone else who is not looking for a powerhouse, but want a retina screen and light laptop, this will not disappoint.
    For power I use my Razer Blade, this MacBook is made for portability.

      Thank you! Finally someone who can help. My late 2013 pro with retina got stolen so I'm in the market for a new laptop. So I was so confused as to which one, the MacBook or the MacBook Pro. They're the same price and I need portability for school. No one had answered the question until you did today. Thank you :)

      I totally agree. People saying that it's not a good video editor and all that. Its good at what it says it does. It has a nice keyboard, great trackback and a stunning screen. Its perfect for my school as its light and portable and having one port isn't the end of the world.

UNLESS YOU NEED PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE (in which you should be willing to sacrifice) DONT USE OS X. Dude please, return it if you can. Don't get this laptop. You're making a mistake. Don't get me wrong, im not an apple hater. How about using the machine for what it was designed for? And how about showing some single power user apps, such as Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop in action, instead of running multiple apps that few people will run at the same time when using a machine like this? If I'm designing a logo or document with Illustrator on a machine designed to be light and portable, then I'll quit the other apps! Just as I won't cram 8 people into a Fiat Panda.
    I have spent hours playing with the slower (low end) 2015 MacBook and it's almost as fast at my Late 2013 MacBook Pro with 1TB of SSD and a 2.6 GHz i7! Launching and browsing through photos in Apple's new Photos app at full screen is smooth and glitch free, as is zooming in and out of the photos using pinch to zoom. The only time it glitched was playing back iMovie videos, and even then, I'm not sure whether it was glitches or intentional pauses in the video of skateboarders.
    Nothing being shown here is how people really use machines when they know the power of the machine. Apple users get on with the task at hand and don't faff around trying to stretch the performance of their gear just to try and break it.

      9 hours ?

      9 hours perhaps if left alone and not touched.

    • @Blustride
      @Blustride 9 лет назад +1

      9 hours is average for ultrabooks, which are more powerful than this. Therefore, it isn't mind blowing in any way, since it is fairly common place. 5 or so years ago it might have been mind blowing, but it isn't today. In fact, I believe the Macbook Air can manage 9 hours, and that has a full iCore processor instead of the Core M in this.

    • @Blustride

    What a complete pile of crap. One usb port that gets twice the wear because it is also your only power port. Those ports are going to break left and right. Only one usb port, that you can't use if you have power plugged in is such an incredible hindrance. I am glad you guys didn't sugar cote this, so many mac users blind themselves to any flaws in these computers.

    • @Artsificial
      @Artsificial 9 лет назад +10

      00meat Plays Yup. But, still, you don't get it. Go down your nearest Apple Store with all your worries and questions, go browse or inquire about something you really need (adapter, cable, whatever) and take your time to just watch the people that fawn over and actually buy that new MacBook in-store. You'll see that all they want and need is a platform that looks shiny, runs Facebook, lets them feel in control with TweetDeck and... yeah, that's about it.
      And that is why Apple can sell them a phablet that looks like a laptop computer.

    I used Photoshop CC with multiple layers per file with RAW format and it seems to run all smooth and okay and I was quite impressed. Scrubbing through the timeline in iMovie gets quite choppy especially when you're editing 1080p Full HD video at 60fps and the performance lags a bit. I got this last January so yeah a bit late but i had a discount and i paid for about the price of the 13 inch Macbook Air 256gb. But i rather get this as i had the choice of a much better trackpad, much sturdier keyboard and a much sharper and brighter screen and an amazing set of speakers on this thing. The performance kinda sucks to be honest. I bought Rayman Origins on the Mac App store and I can't even play the game at full resolution without the game rendering itself in slow motion because the graphics card isn't powerful enough....for F**king rayman and i had to lower the resolution to a maximum of 1440 x 900 for it to run smoothly.

    Anybody else fed up of all the Apple-bashing in the comments? If you don't want an Apple laptop, don't get one. If somebody else wants one for whatever reason, why do you care? Not everybody uses specs as the only criterion when choosing a laptop. I've become convinced that the main reason that people here "hate on" those who opt for Apple products is envy. Nobody wants to hear your whining - get over it.

    • @asdjesdsd
      @asdjesdsd 9 лет назад +1

      I prefer to build a powerful gaming pc than to spend same money on half performance, dated hardware and overpriced apple product, nope not envy at all.

    • @Rob-pb7lm
      @Rob-pb7lm 8 лет назад +4

      +Victor Aravena Leal Cool, fortunately Apple isn't forcing you to buy their product.
      If you've ever seen the inside of the laptop, it's pretty easy to tell it isn't dated hardware at all. A shit ton of R&D goes into something like this to get everything this thin. Look at the motherboard, the screen panel, keyboard, track pad, battery tech and motherboard size. Getting everything that thin is pretty groundbreaking, and it can power one of the nicest screens around too. That's why it's expensive.
      Good for you, enjoy your gaming PC. This isn't for gaming. It was never advertised for gamers. Apple doesn't advertise any of their laptops or desktops for gaming. It's for people that want a really fucking thin laptop that's also really nice. I'm a software developer and it's perfect to take to meetings or use on the go for travel. All my work is done through remote desktop anyways, so it doesn't need to run much.

    Laptop potential with tablet mobility.

    Now this type of thing warrants some reflection; I need a place to ramble for a bit so here goes:
    This type of device needed this kind of price tag. This is Apple we're talking about, and there's no way they're going to put a device out there that will be mistaken for some port-lacking netbook. This is a statement that they've made with regard to the future of ultrabooks and notebooks as the Tested guys are saying, and it wouldn't be quite the same if the everyman had access to this pioneer. Apple is catering to the early adapters, the people that really love the vision the company has for technology, and if you buy this computer they will make damn sure you understand the statement they are trying to make.

    My new Space grey Macbook may look gorgeous but it has the quality of a $200 computer. I've been experiencing so many problems with it, the FaceTime camera not working, the screen flickering, the computer turning on and off as it pleases, battery getting unusually hot and etc... I took it to Apple and they sent it out to get repaired. When I got it back from the Apple Store in Manhasset I played around with it for 40 minutes while they where replacing the isight camera on my defected iPhone 6 plus. Everything appeared to be fine so I thought nothing of it. They changed the entire screen and the bottom part that contains the battery and put all new wiring in. As soon as I got home all the issues that I had before sending it out to get repaired with Apple started to re-occur, and new problems started to present them selves as well. When I went to pick up the computer I felt and heard a component on the inside of the computer move(which is odd because the computer has no moving parts). Which made me infuriated because I got the computer back in worser conditions then before I originally sent it out. I called Apple care because a brand new computer should not be having these issues, its unacceptable. When I was on the phone with Apple care I demanded a new computer because I am a freshman in college and that is my main computer to do all school work on, my text books and basically my entire school life runs off of it. I can not afford to have the computer out of my hands for two weeks in a row. It is spending more time in the shop then it is with me. I said to them why can't I just walk into an Apple store and say take this junky PC and give me a new computer. Then they said there no one can take care of something like that. Then I told Apple care theres always someone who can do something and demanded that they connect me to someone who could, and they refused to. Then they go on about how it takes longer to go through that process then it would to be repaired. Can someone please help me with this major issue? I would be so grateful. Apple should not take care of customers the way they did with me, and i'm sure this is not the first time Apple Care has treated someone like this.

    Truly five years ahead of its time! If we'd had an M1 chip Debut with this model, and a method to fit the Magic keyboard, FaceID, yes, FaceID, for the power button is too thin for TouchID, and two USB-C ports (one on each side), then it is a perfect system to push design forward and justify the notch, while pushing the display to the corners. I'd pay for one with a binned M2 or M3 chip with two high performance cores and four efficiency cores, and at least 32 GB of RAM and 2 TB of storage. That, would be the perfect travel companion and life laptop for me. No questions asked. Plus, include the dual-port USB-C adapter as a value-add, as well as an E-coupon to purchase the extender cable, and you've got huge potential, as the computer can be used as your mobile charging station for your iPhone, AirPods and Apple Watch (not all at once, but in turns), and I'd be set!

    I went from a 2012 Macbook Pro and was ABLE to install a Crucial 512gb SSD and 16gb ram and mid 2014 I got the itch for a new laptop and "Retina" was calling something i was just drooling over because they have so many of us programmed that way and I dropped $2500 on a fully worked mid 2014 and after only a few weeks I realized it was a waste of money. These macbook pro's and other mac's are so good now that I don't think id be looking for a new one until something extremely unique comes along. This one port is death IMO.... you also have to have a SD card reader.
    To think you have to unplug your power, add an adapter probably $40 bucks at apple to USB and transfer a file from a flash drive is just ridiculous. Also what they say about Display and charging would be a big deal killer for me. 2015 is now the year of the macbooks.

    The 11" Air also has an 11" 16:9 display as opposed to the 12" 16:10 display which is a sizeable difference. For me the 11" Air display is definitely too small. Shame I'm not a fan of the new MacBook's shallow travel keyboard though as I wanted as light as possible + retina (and not a tablet). For me the perfect Apple portable is when the MacBook Air goes Retina: tick-tock.

    The lack of upgrade ability is a serious problem in the whole new lineup. I miss the days where I could upgrade ram and HDD a year or two down the line. Currently use a 2012 MBPro ( non retina ) with a 256gb SSD and 500gb HDD and 16 GB or ram and I don't feel the need to upgrade at all. Next step is a 2tb drive and I'll be OK for another 2 years.

    Honestly I think the performance is alright. On a desktop or MBP as a desktop replacement, sure, but on this most people wont even consider using 5 spaces with lightroom and eight chrome tabs open at the same time. Its just not what its ment to do. The broadwell core M processors are amazing for what power they use and for this laptop which is not ment to be used as a main work computer I think their tradeoffs are very resonable.
    I dont know about the price in the US either but here in Sweden its only slightly more expensive than the entry level xps 13 and the same price as the baseline mbp 13" (which is should be everywhere i guess). If youre looking for something to actually use as a laptop and not a desktop replacement for editing and stuff I really think getting this with more portability, better design (subjectively), and double the storage over the baseline MBP.
    Obviously the air should be considered aswell but then again, if youre not looking for more than enough performance the passive cooling, screen and force pad could outweigh the negatives.
    Im not saying it shouldnt be cheaper or that I wouldnt change some things if I could. It doesnt blow my mind but it for sure isnt as bad as some people cconsider it either. Its a good laptop with some pros and some cons just like most others.

    I would be really curious to see a similar video now in 2017 because it's the 3rd version of the Macbook and power was increased over the years, and the keyboard was improved. And now the Macbook Pros are also thinner and lighter making the Macbook Air 13 inch really ridiculous unless you really want a cheaper mac. 13 inch Macbook Pro being as light as the 13 inch Air is crazy, while it packs so much more power and such a better screen and better speakers.

    Very good review.
    I just bought a 13" Pro Retina [still didn't received it], cause my old 13" Pro, just teases with its soon coming death...
    I believe, that Apple will drop the MacBook Air. Why they didn't offered a Retina display [or anything "new"] this year? I think the only reasonable explanation is, that they will drop the air totally out of the portfolio in one or maximum 2 years. It anyway makes no more sense, to have an "Air" when the MacBook is thinner, lighter etc.
    The new MacBook will definitely become far cheaper and more powerful in the same timeframe. And more of the new technologies [force touch, USB-C, the new backlit keyboard - maybe with improved travel, the battery technology etc]. will be found also in the Pro...

    I am a Director of an commerce business, a website developer, I do photography editing and other common tasks, and I will be getting a maxed out Macbook because:
    - Its ultra portable and I travel a lot, and I won't have to worry about battery life like i do now with my 2008 Macbook Pro, which does not perform anywhere near as good as this Macbook (look at Geek Bench).
    - The keyboard is easy to get used to and the keys are actually bigger than before.
    - The trackpad is bigger and force touch felt great for me. It solves that issue of being hard to click at the top of the trackpad on previous models because of the mechanical button design.
    - I manage my photos wirelessly and therefore do not need to plug peripherals into the machine before editing them.
    - Photoshop tasks perform just as well as on my old MBP, if not better.
    - This machine's 512GB PCIe Flash is suitable for managing my web applications locally.
    - Using Sublime Text on this machine with its crisp text display works absolutely great. The program also performs extremely well.
    Overall this will be a big upgrade from my current machine that has lasted 8 years. I will appreciate the smaller footprint and the fact it performs way better than what I currently have. For an application developer this is a very handy tool to have, the chances are you will be meeting with clients or people from your team on a regular basis and want a great experience answering email too whilst out of the office. This machine delivers on those things.
    What would make this machine better? Probably coupling it with a 5K iMac for heavy video editing and such, if that's what you require.
