I agree, I'd like to see the smack down with the Dell XPS 13. Also, can you throw in the legendary Asus UX32VD with SSD drive and memory upgrade? I realize the asus is not as new as the XPS 13 & new mbp, But it would be nice to see a comparision, especially size + display screen quality + typing comfort.
In my opinion, this is by far the best MacBook I've seen in terms of functionality especially seeing the HDMI port never thought I'd see that in a Mac. Being a windows user I can say I wouldn't regret switching to this Mac even if it's a bit dated now in 2018.
Go check DtroitBorg's review then you will understan the real meaning of review. Lisa is good but has 10% of the capability and information of DtroitBorg!!!
I just got this laptop a couple of days ago and I have to say its QUITE fast compared to my 2014 version .... LOVE the force touch tracpad and not only that but the tracpad is more accurate and feels better. I am impressed and well worth the purchase! On the other versions of macbook pro with retina I notice the tracpad gets firm and sticks after a while so I hope this one remains as it is .....
Thanks for this, well done; just one thing to consider in the future -- when presenting numbers, try putting them on the screen (in any form), rather than just read them; it helps a lot to get the figures right and compare them, especially with multi-level benchmarks and particularly when you're not an Anglophone speaker, which seems to be a good part of your audience; I would say that focusing on a set of numbers when listening to someone is more difficult in general, and you tend to speak rather fast (which is good).
Thank you so much, Lisa. You're the only reviewer to make me feel my purchase is justified. Your no-nonsense approach combined with your well researched, common sense commentary makes you the most credible reviewer on the web. Plus, there isn't a hint of bias to you, and that makes your stance all the more powerful. Thank you.
Thank you!! This review helped me decide on this model ..the 8gb 256 ssd 2.7gh. After weeks of research I have found this to be the best deal for a typical user (Netflix, word, light gaming, etc).

Hey Lisa, Did you noticed the well known yellow tint? Or image retention? Thank you!
I hate the fact that they call the new one "MacBook". Pro - Most powerful Air - Portable/All-around The next one should be "feather" or they should call it the new Air, then bring out an all-arounder and call that one the MacBook "something that says it is an all-arounder" like XboX, the MacBook One. I don't know, I just think it's dumb. Or they could do this MacBook - All Around Air - Someone who needs something ultraportable Pro - Someone who needs power
+Ze Gogo Seems more likely they're going to slowly discontinue the Air rather than update it to retina, like they're doing with the old macbook pros. I expect they will show off a 14 inch Macbook next year, and a 17 inch Macbook Pro and do nothing with the Air line at all, or give it a price cut to make it their entry level product.
I've always wanted a Mac and I'm going to be starting college soon so now it's great to know that I'm going to save my money for this. It's not overpriced and works really well. That's what I needed to hear. Thanks.
I'm thinking of buying a Retina MacBook Pro 13, but I heard that the Intel Skylake chip is coming out soon, and apple could possibly release a updated laptop with the new chip in late 2015. Should I wait or should I buy the current one with Broadwell?
Koushik Prasad they only sell the 2015 128gb in my country now? if u want 256gb or higher you need to go for the 2016 mbp 😔 I don't know if I should get the 2015 128gb with a 1tb external hdd and or a 256gb 2016 base model mbp... or maybe I should just go for a windows laptop with bad battery, I don't know anymore.... I wanted to get into music producing and some video editing which I already do on Sony Vegas, but I would need the hdmi, USB and sd card slot... What do you advise me to do?
Im looking at getting this machine since the 2016 model was such a let down in my opinion. I am wondering if the 16gb RAM upgrade is worth it simply on a longevity point of view? I think 8gb is fine now but am unsure if it will be in 2-3+ years.
Just upgraded my collectible unit to MacOS Sonoma 14.4.1 and it is working 100% with the OpenCore Legacy Patcher. Granted, battery had to be replaced once and about to need to be replaced twice. A super nice 75Wh battery was standard in this device, all the way back in 2015. And speakers had to be replaced in 2020. And trackpad had to be replaced after my daughter spilled liquid on it as it became her video class device during the pandemic. But the great thing about macbooks is that you can find all those parts from third party vendors several several years afterwards! So this unit is working and looking like brand new. Except unfortunatelly for the glossy screen coating, which many users and reviewers have noticed does not age well. But it is only observable when the screen is not in use. All in all, an amazing device.
Great reviews! I've been confused about the more in-depth hardware differences between several models as I plan on buying a new laptop this summer, and your videos have answered most of the questions I've had.
As always Lisa provides us with the most comprehensive review in the fastest manner, Bravo !!! I was holding off on this purchase the last couple days as these new MBP's started to roll in to my local Apple store.Lisa has answered all my questions now i just have to decide if I going to pick it up tonight or in the morning !!
Overall build quality goes to apple. The XPS 13 has some flex, plastic and doesn't feel AS rigid. Apple will always win overall build quality. Unless dell goes ALL alluminum. Apple's keyboard is also much better quality. Also the insides, the motherboard and components what most reviews NEVER show are much better on the macbook pro.
I have the late 2013 13" Macbook pro and at home I use it connected to a 32" 1080p TV as a desktop but have the laptop when I need that. I run virtual machines without any issues on here, but I don't usually run more then one at a time, but I have been able to run two at once without issues. I like to watch the spec videos just to see what people are saying, However, Because My budget has only allowed me to upgrade macs every 5 to 7 years, I can honestly say I can appreciate the changes over the greater period time then gen to gen.
I wanted to also add that I use a combination of computer hardware. Linux, and mac, and sometimes windows. I am someone who learned Video editing while MiniDV was popular, and HD was just becoming popular so my expectations of what a suitable machine is may differ from others here. My other Main computer is a 2008 HP Pavilion that I've been upgrading little by little and turned into a linux based server /editing desktop because it still has firewire 400 for backward compatibility with the camera without messing with adapters. And being the Hacker type, I like a computer I have full control over, and OS X is a wonderful beautiful os but I don't like apple doesn't give much of a choice anymore other then the top of the line stuff. So that's why I have decided to learn Linux as a secondary OS because it will run on anything. I've even gotten the HP to run OS X pretty well too so that gives me an older machine I can run older apps on that won't run on current apple hardware.
Hi Lisa! Do you own one of these personally? and if so, have you experienced "staingate" or any permanent marks from the keys damaging the screen? I just learned about this issue today, and I am worried if I should buy an rMBP now because of it.
Lisa - excellent review (as always). Question: with a 128GB Flash drive, how much space is left when you take the MBP out of the box and power it up? Per Apple CSR they are saying only 8GB space is used when fresh from the factory, leaving 120GB. Was wondering if you could confirm this..?
Most useful review i've seen to date & answers the 1 question no-one seems to have covered which is being able to connect to my old Apple non-Thunderbolt display. Thank you Lisa I'll be going with this one!!! :))))
I absolutely love it. The screen is unbelievably sharp - it makes using the computer more fun and engaging. The speed is very good as well. I notice shorter boot times and increased gaming performance. Paid $1200 on eBay and feel like I got a great deal!
Hey Lisa, Nice review as always! Question, what do you think Apple will do with the butterfly keyboards? Will they implement the technology into thicker keys (cause the new macbook keys are very shallow) and add it to the pro? If so, why didn't they do it with this upgrade since they updated the trackpad
I had a go of the new Force Touch Pad and it's like magic! Single click, force click, both easily differentiated. Also the good news is you can do a tap to click still and I'm hoping, a double-click and hold to drag, although I forgot to test that. It's really accurate, so much so that as you gradually increase pressure from a click to a "force"-click, the little word definition balloon gradually opens up from nothing and you can control it. Very clever stuff. I tried highlighting text and that was also fine.
I've been using PC laptops for as long as I could remember. I'm in my senior year in university as an IT student so PCs have been my main-go. Thing is, from the very beginning of when I started university, I bought a new laptop/surface tablet each year because of how shitty it's been turning out. Everything either crashes on me, gets too slow, over heats so bad, doesn't have supported software, etc... Right now I'm using a surface pro 3 for over a year and it's really not bad, but it's annoying using it for coding and database management because it's not all that comfortable to use for hectic softwares for a long time, especially because it overheats and crashes (i'm not making this up, folks). I've fixed 2 of my laptops quite a few times, and to be honest, I have HAD IT with PC!!!!!!!!!!!!! I cannot take it anymore! I decided to do the switch to mac in a few weeks when I saved up and I'm excited because one thing mac is known for is reliability and great CRM. Not to mention the average span of a macbook is 5-7 years. Can't wait to make this purchase. All my PC problems would be solved
Hi guys im studuying computer science! First year, so it will be much programming!! What do u recommend? Macbook pro or something else? Been thinking about lenovo yoga 710. Anyone plz
dr who bom you're better off with a mac. All coding software is usable with a mac. That way, you won't have to worry about following costs such as repairs... If you do with the mac, it's usually covered for a couple of years and there are many apple stores around the world to easily take and fix your laptop for free in whatever country you're in.
The trackpad doesn't actually move at all. This is a trick where the trackpad uses haptic feedback to trick your mind to thinking that it's "clicking". So its really just vibrations with no moving parts in the trackpad. I've tried this trackpad and I honest thought there was some type if wizardry going on because it feels like clicks but its just vibrations.
I'm stuck in the same boat. Don't know how long is left for skylake so not quite sure what to do. If skylake is still a year away I would probably stick with broadwell, but if skylake U is coming in the summer then I will wait. Anyone have any new info on this?
I'm almost positive the trackpad doesn't click at all, I'm pretty sure it's not a mechanically moving part but a static piece of glass with haptic feedback.
Great video. I have one suggestion though: it is very hard to follow the numbers you are saying here. It would help us a lot if you could actually show them while speaking. Cheers, M.
I am still using my 2010 MBP 13" base model every day, and with FCP X and it works just fine still...that said, i will be buying the top of the line 15" MBP this summer when it comes out, but will still use my 2010 :)
Nice review Lisa, lots of info that is actually useful to someone thinking about buying one. As it's been updated now for 2015 and is unlikely to get another one in the next few years, I have a choice,...buy the 13" or wait for the 15" update but am I right in thinking that if my biggest issue at the moment (on an early 2009 MBP 17" 2.9Ghz) is importing and editing my 26MB Fuji RAW files in Lightroom, the quad processors won't make any difference? I guess my question is, if I buy the i5, 8GB version, will I be kicking myself in 3 years time, wishing I'd maxed it out? What do you think?
I went to look at one of these today. They still suffer from the same heat problem that has always plagued the MacBook line. There were four on display and each of them were uncomfortably warm at the bottom of the case, and this was just due to customers surfing the web. Can't imagine what they'd be like watching movies.
+kamaboko1 Watching movies - That's a hard task to do now? Seriously? I'd say running SVP on a movie would be intensive, but just playing it normally? I'd be worried if my computer even noticed that.
I Love your reviews amazing I was able to make a purchase and decide after watching your videos multiple times LOL Thanks Lisa your the best Tommy Las Vegas NV
i own a 13" Mac book pro from the year 2012 when they first came out with the new retina technology, the only real down side was that it only came with 128 gig's of storage on the solid state flash memory. but it has 8 gig's of ram which was nice for that year i still use it it's still truckin along still a good piece of gear. but i am in the market for a new lap top for work and for school pourposes. i hope this thing is worth the freakin cash..
MobileTechReview Lisa would you be doing a video review of the new MacBook Air 13" 2015? Would like to know more about how the new Intel HD graphics 6000 perform. Love your reviews.
Hi Lisa - Great and detailed review. Been looking forward to this and waiting paitiently. I returned a mid 2014 13" rMBP mainly because it could not support 4k @ 60hz. However this is now supported. Also got a mid 2014 15" base model and Im on the fence with returning it for this model as I prefer the form factor and it has the faster SSD with better battery. Not really concerned about the trackpad as I use tap mode. Is the trackpad really any better if you are used to tap mode? Is this model faster in general operation (for non CPU intensive tasks) than a mid 2014 15" base model? i.e due to the faster SSD and higher single threaded clock speed. On a white background is the screen uniform or does it have uneven yellow /dirty cast to it. Is it nice and white (not warm /yellow)? Keep up the great work.
It won't come out until after fall. You should buy this one if you need one that bad and then when the newer version releases, just trade in this one for the new one.
+Elias Borchert apple has a two week return policy if you dont like the computer after that period of time just take it to the apple store and your money will be returned.
I'm glad Apple didn't go too hard in refreshing the 13' Macbook Pro! I just bought my Mid 2014 Macbook pro retina, and would've felt ripped off. I can't wait until next autumn! I will be buying my son a laptop, and will get he 15' 2015 Macbook pro!
This is a great system for my needs: writing, reading, research, cruising and the occasional movie. I chose the 8GB ram w/128GB SSD and I plug in a WD 1T external that I used with the old unit as sort of a cloud back up. I upgraded from an iMac (2010)
Should I buy this laptop? I wanna use it for Minecraft, school projects, homework, browsing, music, etc. I like it a lot but I'm not so sure because of the price. If this is not the best what would you recommend?
I guess now that Apple has done a refresh of this line we won't see another refresh before the end of the year. I have a 2013 MacBook Air but want to upgrade to this so badly, wonder if it's worth it purely for the display and the extra RAM/storage.
Could you please do a comparison video for the 2015 Pro Retina 13" + the 2015 Air 13" please. I'm buying a Macbook next month + am torn between the 2 models.
Nice review, thanks. I think this one will be my next purchase, upgrading from late 2013 rMBP mainly for the: SSD and gfx boosts, 8GB RAM and Broadwell and of course Force Touch.
i like your videos more than other tech channels because theres no irritating music in the background when you talk and theres no flashy edits and graphics flying everywhere

Hi Lisa,
what are your views on USB - C?
Are you optimistic or pessimistic about its adoption?
I'm sure USB-C will be standard and common in a few years. Leaving out the rest of the ports in early 2015 is jumping the gun though.
I would LOVE a smackdown between this one and the XPS 2015. I am absolutely torn between both for college
From what I understood the force touch trackpad does not click. It has haptic feedback to make it feel like a click
Did you notice that the keyboard in the 2015 model is different compared to the 2014 model? Really wondering why they did not announce that change.
Glad to see I'm not the only IT major with these issues!
I got my macbook retina 13|2015 as a gift from my mom! just last sunday... Lovin' it.
Your videos are so wonderful and so much great detail, great video.
For all those benchmark numbers would be nice to see them in the video.
Should I wait for skylake?!?!?
I've been waiting for this broadwell chip.... and almost every article tells me to wait for skylake...
I'm stuck in the same boat. Don't know how long is left for skylake so not quite sure what to do. If skylake is still a year away I would probably stick with broadwell, but if skylake U is coming in the summer then I will wait. Anyone have any new info on this?
Me too! How long till skylake macbook pro's anyone know?
Same here! Skylake plus space grey word be cool.
As usual Lisa, you are the BEST!
I'm almost positive the trackpad doesn't click at all, I'm pretty sure it's not a mechanically moving part but a static piece of glass with haptic feedback.
Probably going to be getting one in a couple of days
Great video. I have one suggestion though: it is very hard to follow the numbers you are saying here. It would help us a lot if you could actually show them while speaking. Cheers, M.
You could do a boot up speed comparison , and real everyday use comparison between this and the mid 2014 macbook pro.
Watching on Macbook pro 13.3 2015. Thanks Lisa, your reviews helped a lot to make a decision. Real machine machine. :)
You're awesome! great review
mac owes you because you convinced me to get the MBP 2015 256gb model
so happy
Ultima Online especially now that the shit 2016 one came out
When does it make sense to use I7 and 16GB RAM?
Did someone test other games on it, f.e. World of Warcraf - WoD?
This video was great! I am saving for a macbook and am very happy of what I'm going to be buying. thank you Lisa!! :)
Is one of these brand new sealed unopened ...2.7ghz 8gb 128gb flash storage for $400 Canadian good?
EYEAWKN films hi. My opinion....YES! I purchased a 2nd hand last month with the same specs except I got the 250 GB for 350 US Dollars and love it!
Great job as always Lisa, Hopefully you will do a comparison/smack down between this 13" MacBook Pro and the new Dell XPS 13".
When you read out benchmarks, can you show them on the screen as well? I am sure that'll be useful.
MobileTechReview Lisa would you be doing a video review of the new MacBook Air 13" 2015? Would like to know more about how the new Intel HD graphics 6000 perform. Love your reviews.
XPS 13 vs Macbook Pro smackdown please!
Any sign of anti-reflective coating peeling off on this 2015 model? Read somewhere about the MacBook Pro retina staingate issue.
When will the 2016 model come out? I need it before I start college this fall
It won't come out until after fall. You should buy this one if you need one that bad and then when the newer version releases, just trade in this one for the new one.
apparently it wont be out until the end of the year X(
I also need a laptop for university. Might just get this.
+Vampdiariesandpll Creations how do you trade it in? Will you get all your money back or?
its coming out at mid september
+Elias Borchert apple has a two week return policy if you dont like the computer after that period of time just take it to the apple store and your money will be returned.
Yes please; smackdown between MacBook Pro 2015 and new Dell XPS 13.
Thanks.
Do you have an iPad too?
no
Please review the space grey macbook when it releases! Love this channel
Should I buy this laptop? I wanna use it for Minecraft, school projects, homework, browsing, music, etc.
I like it a lot but I'm not so sure because of the price. If this is not the best what would you recommend?
Are you planning on doing a smackdown of this VS the similarly priced XPS 13? Or any similarly priced windows counterparts.
Still waiting for the 2016 version
I guess now that Apple has done a refresh of this line we won't see another refresh before the end of the year. I have a 2013 MacBook Air but want to upgrade to this so badly, wonder if it's worth it purely for the display and the extra RAM/storage.
I think if you put graphs and such when talking benchmarks it would be easier to understand
The model Mf839 Retina is compatible with Samsung 950 Pro ssd M.2 model? Thanks!
Very nice review! You have a very pleasant voice and face! I actually just ordered mine yesterday :)
when quoting benchmarks could you please display comparisons onscreen. my brain only has 512kb of ram
It would be nice to have subtitles on your videos
You can turn them on....
Could you please do a comparison video for the 2015 Pro Retina 13" + the 2015 Air 13" please. I'm buying a Macbook next month + am torn between the 2 models.
A smackdown between the two would be amazing!
Nice review, thanks. I think this one will be my next purchase, upgrading from late 2013 rMBP mainly for the: SSD and gfx boosts, 8GB RAM and Broadwell and of course Force Touch.
I'm tossing between the new 13" Pro R and the old 15" Pro R. Which is faster in multitasking adobe/video?
