@@blackirish781 Yeah isn't Paris basically rioting right now? I got a close friend and we just brought someone who lived there related to him back to the States because it's so turbulent there right now. Anyway I wouldn't go down in the catacombs myself but these videos are cool, I think it'd be really easy to get lost or like mugged even, cause people run into other people all the time down there. I am sure there's even some lesser known parts of it that are host to worse things like ... areas for criminal activity or like Satanic cults etc
I am actually a little familiar with the Paris Catacombs and can confirm that the footage is probably real but not in the way people think it is. Not only is exploring the Catacombs not a good idea but it is also illegal in Paris and it's illegal for a very specific reason. There is a group of explorers that frequent the catacombs that can confirm that whenever it rains the catacombs actually gets really flooded very very fast. Meaning the water can sometimes even go up to waist-length during this downtime. When this happens, explorers are encouraged to run as fast as they can to the nearest exit ladder to safety, however because the Catacombs is practically a maze this is a bit of a challenge. After looking at the footage i notice i can hear the sound of puddles as the man is running. whoever had this camera probably noticed the water levels rapidly rising and was in such a panic to find an escape he probably just dropped his camera on the way out. Honestly that's all I really think it is. Also fun little fact if you venture just far enough into the catacombs you might stumble upon a secret area where all the catacombs explorers frequently meet up to party with music and the like. Theres a bunch of cool things in that secret area from sculptures to replicas of famous paintings to an actual DJ Booth. In reality the Catacombs is not as scary as people make it out to be but it is still a bit dangerous.
My theory was since its really tight walls and level of oxygen probably isn't that high. He probably started to have some sort of halucinations. Just my theory
He probably got into a part of the catacombs that had next to zero oxygen and especially gases that build up over time from no air flow at all, him being down 300 feet below street level, this is a very real possibility. This can cause someone to panic, and breathe faster thus killing them in the process from the deadly air. That's what I think happened. He wasn't being chased, wouldn't you panic if you couldn't breathe?
Even if the footage is fake this is beyond one of the most terrifying concepts I can ever imagine a person being in; the tight walls, thin air, pitch blackness- totally horrifying. You bet ur arse I’m never going down there!
what is really scary.... some of the newer bodies found there are from dyeing of thirst or hunger...…… that means they get lost and are stuck down there for days or even weeks.
Yeah. And there has been people that have gotten lost down there and spent hours getting back out.. It is a believable thing to get lost down there. But these days I'm leaning on the footage not being real.
To people saying these images make them uncomfortable - please never go there. Friends and I thought it would be a funny expedition but it's traumatizing. It smells like death, and i don't mean it smells bad (of course it does) but it feels so overly cursed and ominous, every sound make you want to scream and cry. The holes can be so small you can't even go through, you get lost, you can't call the emergencies.. please, for the love of god. don't go there.
@C Ky No signal under there. (Unless you happen to have those military phones that have signal everywhere but i don't think civilians can buy them. No idea)
@misa smith Wow,..are you actually defending stupid behavior by calling this exploration? You cant really be serious or are you just simply not intelligent enough to know the difference between the two? Ill bet you are one that is easily hoaxed as well.
@misa smith So its quite obvious you have no argument to defend your illogical and absurd position so like every other idiot you resort to ad hoc word salad. Your critique of my gramatical abilities is not only incorrect but shows your inability to understand my point,...which by the way shows just how correct my assessment of you was so,....thanks for that.
@@CarayMay You are correct in that it is pointless to debate someone as delusional and so far removed from reality as misa smith is, but the point is for intelligent people to read what i have written in hopes they learn something.
I'm amazed that people forget these are man-made structures, meaning _people_ built them. The workers were there, with no electricity, digging away and putting up the brick and stone that holds the whole thing together. Wanna talk about scary? Imagine being down there for 16 hours a day, breathing rotten air (if you've ever been near a construction site for a subterrainean parking lot you know what I'm talking about), with a rickety oil lamp to light up your work and being constantly at the risk of having the whole damn think fall on your head. _That's_ fucking scary.
They are called the gates of hell for a reason. Dont expect you to discover what you are not meant to know. Let's see you mark every trail and go deep as deep gets...
After watching too many videos and reading up on the history of the catacombs, Its clear he is WAY too deep in them. There's no graffiti, and in the footage it's very clear he's not in his right mind, paranoia and fear quite literally taking him over. I think the idea of some kind of "creature" or whatnot is interesting but...not very plausible. I think he was in there for too long, and as I said he was WAY TOO DEEP and alone, the silence can actually affect your brain. You can hear voices, see things of course, you're going to panic and run. But then again we have so much left to discover in our world so maybe one day there's proof that something is down there, but for now I think his surroundings got to him
This is very true that too silent can be very unsettling. Our mail room blocks any noise after you shut the door for some reason and its just dead silent inside. I was hanging around there for a minute on my phone. I kinda freak out a bit beacuse I could not hear anything and run out.
@@kathrynbalance1294 hi a bit late .. Why explore alone? Aren't there just hi-lights and no one goes too far? Are there residents? Was it homeless people pi$$ed off at a trespasser ..?
"Something down there," lol. If the video is real, he was just panicking. Like you said, being alone, the silence, paranoia, etc.. I don't think it's helpful at all to insert creatures, ghosts, or goblins. If a man really did die, it's a super sad thing. I find it a little disrespectful to talk about a tragedy like this and treating it like a spooky campfire nonsense boogie woogie tale bullshit.
Noted, when planning your trip into the catacombs, bring along one person whose sole purpose is to carry enough spare batteries to last until the sun explodes.
A sword is likely best, or spear. A gun would cause collapse in such brittle walkways. Yes, it would come down to the sword to survive. Batteries are most definitely a must. Backpack with food, and potable water. Other people are a must, too. Say you are trapped by collapse, what then? Never ever go alone in such desperate conditions. You will likely die alone, but another could reach help, which will reach you. Always record what you do, cause a maze can confuse, but video will always show the exact path taken. So batteries for that, too. Medical field kit for any cuts and or burns depending on if you somehow where so inclined to use torch and then burned self. Stead fast, and look for fairly recent collapses, likely, if this is a real incident, that individual buried himself down there under rock and refuse.
The catacombs are terrifying. Me and 2 friends explored for about 45 minutes and got the hell out. I’ll never go back down and, don’t suggest anyone else does.
@@TheDimz14 nah. But I’ve visited Edinburgh vaults and find the history interesting, and stayed only within the areas you’re allowed to visit with a tour guide. I’d do that with the Catacombs but can’t see myself ever leaving Scotland tbh, too poor for that
Even if this footage is fake, it still freaks me out because it's a pretty convincing depiction of a situation that has happened to people before, and is likely to happen again in the future. There is precedent to show these unfortunate events do take place. Great video, Mike. I haven't seen anyone actually cover this one before. Very interesting.
No it's not. That is unless you are really aiming for it since all of entrances have been sealed and the ones that lead to the greater catacombs are constantly under close eye
Anita Remenárová which is too bad. I mean, I guess it ensures safety. But, there is a whole world under there of things we do not know that’s hundreds of years old. I know it’s a bad omen to travel where mass remains have been set, but I’d love to go down there.
@@DisDatK9 If you want to get lost, never to be seen again there are some entrances in the sewer and in the metro that according to rumors weren't found
I've heard the story of a teen girl who after attending a new years party in the catacombs of Ukraine got lost and perished, only to have her body found years later.. her body perfectly preserved because even the rats didn't go down that far... I can only imagine the level of fear wandering alone in the darkness for days, crying screaming to no prevail. That's terrifying to me.
@@maryfreebed9886 wait a minute, a girl was killed and chopped into pieces down in the catacombs??? I'd LOVE to travel over there and go exploring but only with a very experienced cataphile (sp???) and with a couple of guns.
I cant say about the authenticity of the Paris Catacombs but my father, as a child and his 2 friends stumbled on some in Sicily and scared the hell out of all of them. This was back in the 50's. They were exploring and found an entrance that brought them to a lower level of the town, into a church ruin. They thought they were opening huge cupboard doors thinking they would find old books or something and as they opened them them they encountered skeletons of dead priests etc In a panic they got disoriented and almost couldnt find their way out.. One of his friends was sick for months and the other two were so freaked out with fear that they never ventured near that area ever again.
In Sicily? Hmm...interesting. I wouldn’t think there wouldn’t be very deep tunnels under Sicily only because it’s an island. I’ve been there...but obviously I didn’t go anywhere underground. That’s creepy 😮. Now, Rome...that is definitely filled with a lot of tunnels and bodies, etc... After all they built the new city on top of the old city. There are plexiglass cut outs that you can walk over to look down on some of the foundations from the old city. It’s absolutely insane, in a really interesting and cool way. 😊✌🏻
Comment 2: I suppose if the tunnels were in the higher parts of Sicily...but not too close to Mt. Etna...as that would be almost impossible with the volcanic activity. I mean Sicily does go from 0ft above sea level to like 10,000ft at the highest peak of Etna. (Or something like that...don’t remember the exact elevation). Would have to know what town/city in Sicily these tunnels are supposed to be located. Still....interesting to say the least. 😊
guy probably just spooked himself, dropped his cam n run... you know that feeling when you go downstairs late at night, its dark and quiet... then on the way back upstairs you find yourself scurrying up the last few steps because you feel something behind you.
But it was his only light source you would think your survival instincts would keep you from dropping it? Unless it was too heavy, I just can’t imagine running into pure darkness. Wouldn’t not being able to see where you are going just slow you down more?
@@raymondmichalak1026 he was running away from something. Hypothetically, if he thought something was chasing him, he prolly thought that dropping his light source would prevent his pursuer from tracking him since it was clear that only he had light and this his pursuer could follow him because of that
BS If it was shown on the tv show first then its definitely fake. Tv shows have budgets to make fake videos like this look real. He should have stopped the video right there when he said it was aired first on a TV show. That just gives away its credibility. And the name of the person wasnt given, sure they dont have a missing person report for him now do they because its fake. And why would he drop his source of light and run into darkness if he was scared. The video is shot dramatically which is what studios do. Its a 100% fake. And I can bet it was Freedland himself who shot it and sold the clip to scariest places in the world program and offered to do an investigation clip as well for them lol
Realistic theory: the catacombs usually flood when it rains, and the puddle sounds suggest that he panicked with the catacombs started to flood. Most likely he tried to find a way out but failed, and became just another skeleton in the sea of the dead. Scary theory: Given his panic, and how he started to run, it was suggesting someone or something was down there with him. Also him dropping the camera could show his effort to try to lose weight in order to run faster, or the camera was knocked out of his hands.
If he thought something was coming after him then he might have decided to just drop the camcorder. After all, running with it, with the light on, means anyone following him could clearly just follow the light. Perhaps it was a panic thing but I'm guessing the thought was, "I gotta ditch this light and do it RIGHT NOW!" and so he just drops it. If I recall, a lot of camcorders had menus that weren't easy (or quick) to navigate. There might not have been a simple "on/off" switch for the light. Faster to ditch it and run!
He said the recording lasts as long as there was time left in the cam after the person dropped it. Wouldn't the video have some evidence of the flooding if that was the case? And even if the video wasn't long enough to show the potential flood, how did the cam survive the water?
Whether fake or not, Mr Friedland said he gave up after six miles...six miles! wow... I think I would have given up at the entrance, so kudos to him. Thanks Mike, another fascinating vid.

All of the bodies would have been decomposed, it was built as an ossuary- you take the bones and reinter them someplace else. In some places you can see the bones stacked into piles, usually by bone type, like most ossuaries would. There's at least one ossuary church that I'm familiar with- the Sedlec Ossuary Church in Kutna Hora, Czechia (you should check out pictures of it, it's morbidly beautiful). Just last month they announced that if you wish to take pictures inside the church you need to ask for permission three days in advance to curb the onslaught of 'inappropriate selfies' that tourists have been taking.
*I believe he began to panic when he couldn't find his way back. succumbed to a lack of oxygen upon running. It's been over 25 years, his body likely deteriorated into just bones.*

@ᴀᴋᴀᴍᴇ sʜɪɴᴏʟ the thing with found footage films is all of the footage we see has to survive to the end of the story. For example, Chronicle tells us at the end that the third friend edited all the footage together. So when one guy gets himself sucked down to hell in As Above, camera and all, all of the footage we see from him disappears with him. That happens a couple times in the movie and it broke my immersion.
I swear on my life and everything that I love. I saw/heard this footage years ago (with headphones in) and *immediately* before he drops the camera and starts running, you can hear a woman’s voice say “are you scared?” Its literally making my eyes water just thinking of it. I listened to it dozens of times, with my eyes open, and closed, and at different speeds. I don’t know if the footage was messed with in some way, but I KNOW I heard that voice ask “Are you scared?” the very second that he drops his camera and runs. I cannot even imagine that kind of fear and helplessness.

You could have tried to have trace the camera. The serial number could be traced to a distributor and possibly an owner if there was a warranty... My bet is the trail will lead to Friedland.
yeah cameras were expensive back then, even I filled in my warrant for those old tape cameras, also the shops you bought them from often encouraged you to take out extended warranty and took down your details. Sounds like a BS story to me given that the entire footage has never been screened or published.
Yep, it's a fair bet if you could find the distributor, and then walked in there with Friedland they'd recognise him as a regular customer... now what would be the chances that a catacomb urbexer would happen to use the same camera shop in Paris as Friedland?
I also find it odd that Francis found two of the landmarks that were seen in the original video such as the skeleton painting and the room full of bones which seemed like it wasn't far from where the camera was dropped and decided to call off the search.
The thing is, while finding the skeleton painting, the catacombs are full of charnel houses (rooms packed with bones) so the room Francis found may not be the one in the video... if it is, then I agree, it's odd that two key locations have been found, which again flags up that it's fake.
ppl that say its fake forget that there ARE PEOPLE that live down there. and they will try to attack you. if it was fake the french tv show would not have gone as deep as the footage is if they could do it close to the top. The people down there have been known to try n attack tourists and take cams, maps and lights. thats clearly a cause of death. if he heard the ppl coming id run too
Cam recorders back in the 90s were expensive, and I would assume the owner would have registered that camera with the manufacturer for warranty purposes, so WHY NOT contact the manufacturer with the serial number for that camera to see if the owner can be determined?
If the man wasn’t identified, and the cams don’t show any identification or any talking, thus making it impossible to contact, and the camera was dropped, making it hard for other people to track the user and the camera was almost impossible to get to if it was lost,
i was born in 1980, my family had a bunch of camcorders in the 90s, and i'm in a developing country (a.k.a. third world... lol) ...it wasn't that big a deal, like, you wouldn't have been able to call sony to help identify our corpses or wtv... 😂
There's graffiti everywhere down there, everywhere!...meaning people have been down there extensively for decades. Kids used to party down there in the 80's.
I think they still do. There are probably areas that are frequented more often and maybe well known, so you don't get lost there. But there are certainly more deserted, less well explored and dangerous areas down there es well.
There's no graffiti where the tape was filmed, meaning nobody has been that deep. It's incredibly massive and hundreds of feet underground and almost 300 miles of mazes.
My heart skipped a beat when that film crew stopped at the latter, said the hatch was stuck, and then that they'd have to backtrack 5 or 6 miles. Just a taste of what the person in the footage went through, if indeed it is real.
@@Romulus_aint_shyt your reference to clipping had me believe you where talking about Minecraft like the entire rest of the comment section again. "Oh look I found a videotape that might be evidence in a missing person case. Should I take it to the police? No, I think I'll give it to a cinematographer." Completely plausible.
It's illegal, a lot of people wouldn't report something cause what they did was illegal, second, the police isn't trained for that, i'm pretty sure the people who's job is to go down here or they know the way don't want to go cause it's dangerous, did go down here and it's useless or just the path got blocked.
Now I've never been into the catacombs, but feel down a rabbit hole and ended up researching them way to much. From what I found, the catacombs act a lot like storm drains when it rains, and can fill up with water up to the stomach rather quickly. Seeing how the water was flowing past the camera, I think the explorer just noticed the water level rising and panicked, making a break for an escape ladder and leaving his camera behind.
Doubtful. His camera was his only source of light and keeping it with him would have helped him find an emergency ladder faster than searching in pitch darkness in a maze.
Imagine being lost down there in the dark with no light and all that history of death down there with you and your mind running wild. You wouldn't last long.
Omg yes agree! I Literally would had given myself a heart attack. Like my body would be on the main path and easily discoverable because I would had dropped dead 💀... I call bullshit on video unless this person had zero family or friends because as much as it’s aired , nobody’s claimed him yet 😞
The movie 'As Above So Below' was inspired by the video and honestly is pretty damn good. Definitely worth a watch if you're interested in the catacombs.

We currently have, in real life, drones that are capable of scouring the Fukashima reactor cores. We have entire squads getting PhDs in micro robotics designed to survive nuclear radiation. The catacombs are nothing for a drone, so send some in.
Well, maybe because some people really know whats hidden in the lowest sections and prevents that people discover it. Im not saying gosths or demons, but animals like cocrodiles that can atack humans or the drons thinking that they are some kind of animal, or maybe there are gosths down there, who knows. And, why would any one want to go down there whit a drone? I dont think there is a pile of gold waiting, and, as i see it, if it isnt confirmed that down there habit some paranormal shit is pointless to go check it out. At least i see it like that.
Always makes me suspicious when film makers just so happen to be handed films of amazing footage. What a coincidence he found the exact room! Lol. Who found the camera and gave it to him again?
He can't continue because after the moment when the camera hits the floor, we don't know where the man went. And yes he found the room because on the original footage (unrealesed) the man filmed all of his travel, from the enter to the moment when he dropped the camera, so they just had to follow the video
That's who ALWAYS ends up with footage like this. But I guess they're the ones that would do something with it. We didnt have RUclips back then. So in a way I get why you would give information like this to a filmmaker. The police wouldn't do anything, news stations probably wouldnt be interested. All that leaves is the crazies.
@Olympia Fulcher I know what you tried to say but I can not accept it because here we have two hugely different scenarios that can not be compared like that. But yes on average person who does not think further than the first thought might *reasonably assume* it is possible.
Alicia Marcel factssss. Most id do is that official your where you walk in one lil room so I can be like yo I seen it. Dude, I relate. If some villagers came up to me and are like "don't go in there, it's cursed and everyone who explored has died" and I just be like "cool just point me to the first exit out of here and the nearest McDonald's"
I agree! It has great rewatch value too. Easily one of my favorites. Can't even count how many times I've watched it. I wish there were more horror films about the catacombs.
So this Freeland guy found the exact spot the guy recorded somehow... miles and miles of tunnels going in every which way... but he just happened to find that spot.... interesting.
What terrifies me most about this video are the things that look like faces or full bodies appearing on the walls (could just be a drawing) & after he drops the camera, he continues running down. The puddle next to the camera is still for a bit & then ripples like something else ran by it after he was out of sight. That part mostly still terrifies & confuses me to this day.
Regarding batteries running out when you're exploring, it reminds me of a rule of thumb I once read about concerning cave diving: divers use a third of their oxygen going in, so they have a two-thirds supply to get back with. If I were exploring the catacombs, I'd use a similar rule of thumb concerning the batteries. About the video: The Blair Witch Project came out in 1999; this seem very much in that vein - even the figure on the wall reminds me of the mysterious crosses in The Blair Witch Project. It could be coincidence, but what we see of the catacomb video seems rather derivative, to me. I doubt it's real.
Fake or not, that wall painting creeps the hell out of me. But to Friedland's credit, Baggans isn't exactly a respectable name in the "weird mystery shit" community... If I was gonna go down there again at his age, it'd have to be for someone a lot more legit than Zak.
That painting isnt painting its marks of the tortured people back in 1600-1800 i bet they puted them there and wanted information thats how things worked back then
The moment you said it was found by a film maker and said film maker goes down to the exact spot that was filmed and he said he omitted footage makes it a definite hoax.
Occam's razor says the most logical, least complicated explanation is likely the correct one, so it's clear this guy was being chased by a demon, and fell into a pit that led to Hell.
Sure was convenient that as massive as the catacombs are, Freedland and their crew stumbled upon 2 of the main sights in the original video. Terrifying to think of nonetheless though, i dont do tight spaces.
The only thing that makes me believe this is bullshit, is the fact that the footage was given to a filmmaker. Why would you not take it to the police? Or to the media? Why a filmmaker, of all people? It just doesn't make sense. Also, the fact that the person who originally found the footage is "anonymous". Of course...
One day there needs to be a massive group that goes down there and explores the damn thing. Lots of equipment to keep track of where you’re at, nobody staying alone, taking every single precaution and marking everywhere you’ve gone.
I remember that documentary , definitely dramatized as I believe the guys very good at manouevering those entrances and would never allow a manhole to be closed while they were down there (illegal or not). I believe Friedland made the footage himself , due to his skill in moving through the area and mapping it out . Ahhh Syfy , back when it was decent in the early 2000s showing movies all day long with a few paranormal shows on throughout and some flagship series .
3:52 Wrong, the footage was actually first mentioned much earlier in the mid 1990s in the Fox tv show called Sightings, I remember the tv host said something like they recently received a video from an unknown source that shows a person lost in an underground tunnel and they asked their tv viewers to contact them if there is any further informations on the video .. I went to check the wikipedia page for the Signtings TV episodes and found that Season 4 Ep5 aired in 1995 did contain a description of "haunted catacombs", i believe thats the one mentioning the lost man footage ... I think people got the wrong impression that it was first mentioned in 2000 because Rob Gavagan wrongly mentioned that piece of information in his own youtube video on it ...
Also pretty fishy he never showed his face or voice, and he didnt tell anyone he was going? and he dropped his only light source to run blindly in the dark? If someone found a camera like that why wouldnt they give it to the police instead of some random guy? Why is there no full footage anywhere? Why did he decide to record in the middle when he could of backtracked if he recorded in the beginning? Why are they trying to make it seem as scary as possible like " oh he probably saw something" and the guy just so happens to pass a really creepy monster painting when they are trying to make it seem as scary as possible to begin with. Idk it screams fake to me.
i know this comment is from five months ago but as someone who has worked with tape cameras from the early 90’s, some of them had the ability to play back the tape straight from the camera but it looks like the one he was holding had no view finder, which means whoever was filming would have had to convert the tape to video on a computer later to watch it back. my guess is he didn’t have that equipment with him.
Dude. You don't understand how much this tripped me out. I was watching "Above, So Below" (horror movie about the Paris Catacombs being the gate to hell) RIGHT NOW, and was like, "Hey, where's the Paris Catacombs footage that I remember?" And I couldn't find it right away, so I clicked on your face, because "HEY MIKE!" (every time you say "Hi, my name's Mike," we immediately go, "HEY MIKE!" in response. But then got TOTALLY confused by the title and thought RUclips was lagging or something. My brain could NOT compute that you were actually talking about EXACTLY what I was watching/looking up. Oi, that was hard on me brain,
Here’s my theory: He was searching around for ores, and a creeper appeared, and he panicked and accidentally hit Q, which explains why he dropped the camera. But he got away before the creeper exploded which is why we don’t see nor hear an explosion in the video.
@Marko Milivojević Rust Portland too.... Ugh, they give tours of sections of the underground tunnels in Portland. I've gone on it twice. It's scary with a bunch of other people, steady light sources and a guide. They call them the Shanghai Tunnels and was used for human trafficking as the tunnels connected to the Columbia River which eventually connects to the Pacific (if the guides are to be believed). The thing that freaked me out the most? There were cells down there, like a prison, made of iron and super old (or, very convincing set dressing?) but the bars were flat, not round, and so close together only a finger could fit though. Never saw anything like that before or since. If it's not some bs publicity/touristy stuff, it's horrific.
I saw a horror film recently called "As above, so below", which was about a treasure hunt in these catacombs. Worth a watch if you like feeling claustrophobic. Another great video Mike.
I've been there. It's not scary at all really because there are quite a lot of people in there and it's almost like a museum at this point. But yeah, if you were locked in there, all alone, lost... you can totally go nuts by the time you're found.
Since they won’t show anymore of the video, even though he claimed there was about 45 minutes of exploration before he dropped the camera, I’m going to say it’s a fake. They were obviously in the same part of the catacombs as the supposed “Explorer” for the show. We can tell by the same graffiti on the walls. They could have filmed the footage themselves while they were also shooting the show? While they were in that part of the catacomb, they could have stayed in one place while one guy went ahead of them and taped the “found footage” on an old 90s camera and dropped it on the floor. Wouldn’t be the first time some show created their own mystery video or pictures for an episode. I say it’s fake. Video cameras were very large and heavy back in the 90s. I seriously doubt the light mounted on the camera was his only source of light , because those old camcorders didn’t give you hours of light before the battery needed recharging. The low volt usage of today’s LED camera lights didn’t exist then, so the only lights that were bright enough for filming were halogen lights, which are extreme energy hogs and would drain those batteries quickly, probably and hour at best. The host said it would take 5 hours to backtrack. Five hours of batteries would have been a lot of batteries back then and camcorder batteries were a lot bigger and heavier back in the 90s. I can remember the cellphones from the 90s and the batteries were huge and very heavy compared to today’s lithium batteries for cell phones. It smells like a fake, especially since they refuse to show the video in its entirety. That’s enough reason to think it’s a fake.
Id like to add that this wasnt the first time this footage showed up. He said that the first time it aired was in the 2000's, but it actually also appeared in 1995 on a show called "Sightings" that also claimed that an anonymous explorer gave them the tape.
Yeah it's fake. They refused to show the entire video because they only filmed the beginning, and the running and dropping the camera part. There's nothing in between.
I always wondered how the guy who found the camera wasn't terrified or lost the footage shows he is so deep in the catacombs probably fake I hope so...
I was intrigued by this case in 2015 and I found it incredibly frustrating that the 40+ minutes of footage have not been released, or possibly "leaked"? Wish Freedland would just put it on the Internet
I don't think so... my family bought their first camcorder in 1993 (and it was hundreds of dollars, was a pretty decent camcorder I now possess... you place the piece in a VHS tape, plays on VCR, I don't know the technical terms). I remember getting it, it was a big deal to me- I was 6 almost 7 years old, one month before my 7th birthday. It was paid in cash, no link to my parents or forms they filled out. I'm pretty sure the paper receipt (an old written receipt on transfer paper- it was from a place similar to Radio Shack, next door to it back then) is still in the massive case. Those old cameras were huge. My camcorder actually still works, believe it or not, but it doesn't have anything linking it to the owner or a registration of sorts, that I'm sure of. I'm in Wisconsin though. I don't know how it operated making such purchases in larger cities though or in France. Just saying my experience is all ;)
@@mrs.elentz2336 Thanks for the great explanation! I am in Australia and serial numbers were more common on appliances, the purchaser sending in a guarantee or warrant card after purchase, thereby linking him or her to the item and its serial number. I sometimes forget how different things can be in the US.
The serial # can pinpoint when and where the camcorder was put through production. It's also a way to figure out where the recorder was sent and where it was bought. But chances are it was bought with cash.

I am actually a little familiar with the Paris Catacombs and can confirm that the footage is probably real but not in the way people think it is.
Not only is exploring the Catacombs not a good idea but it is also illegal in Paris and it's illegal for a very specific reason. There is a group of explorers that frequent the catacombs
that can confirm that whenever it rains the catacombs actually gets really flooded very very fast.

The camera layed there until it ran out, if the water was rising it wouldve probably broken the camera or atleast the water wouldve been filmed

Because cameras really slow you down, Not!
If something was behind or following him, it must have been filmed with the cam after he dropped it. Which wasn't.

The thing is, while finding the skeleton painting, the catacombs are full of charnel houses (rooms packed with bones) so the room Francis found may not be the one in the video... if it is, then I agree, it's odd that two key locations have been found, which again flags up that it's fake.
Imagine you're walking in water in the dark and you stop, and hear footsteps running towards you

David because the video is faked for attention, don’t be unsatisfied there is no person in the video that got lost
I believe his body was found, so they must’ve identified him from remains but not released his name.
If the man wasn’t identified, and the cams don’t show any identification or any talking, thus making it impossible to contact, and the camera was dropped, making it hard for other people to track the user and the camera was almost impossible to get to if it was lost,

Remember that going into the catacombs is illegal. So it is very unlikely he would go to the police telling that he found it in the catacombs.

He can't continue because after the moment when the camera hits the floor, we don't know where the man went.
Wrong, the footage was actually first mentioned much earlier in the mid 1990s in the Fox tv show called Sightings, I remember the tv host said something like they recently received a video from an unknown source that shows a person lost in an underground tunnel and they asked their tv viewers to contact them if there is any further informations on the video .. I went to check the wikipedia page for the Signtings TV episodes and found that Season 4 Ep5 aired in 1995 did contain a description of "haunted catacombs", i believe thats the one mentioning the lost man footage ... I think people got the wrong impression that it was first mentioned in 2000 because Rob Gavagan wrongly mentioned that piece of information in his own youtube video on it ...
yet no one had been reported missing to the police
Also pretty fishy he never showed his face or voice, and he didnt tell anyone he was going? and he dropped his only light source to run blindly in the dark? If someone found a camera like that why wouldnt they give it to the police instead of some random guy? Why is there no full footage anywhere? Why did he decide to record in the middle when he could of backtracked if he recorded in the beginning? Why are they trying to make it seem as scary as possible like " oh he probably saw something" and the guy just so happens to pass a really creepy monster painting when they are trying to make it seem as scary as possible to begin with.

Nine teen ninety tree🎄
well who picked up the camera I would start my investigation with him
Since they won’t show anymore of the video, even though he claimed there was about 45 minutes of exploration before he dropped the camera, I’m going to say it’s a fake.
Thank you 🙏
Yeah it's fake. They refused to show the entire video because they only filmed the beginning, and the running and dropping the camera part. There's nothing in between.
That "he" drops his camera - his only source of light - means it's absolutely fake. I think Freedland saw a good way to get some attention.
"Why would he drop his only light source?"
To ensure his fake footage was well lit.
How would anyone know if he also had a flashlight?

What about the serial number of the camcorder? In those days this linked to the identity of the owner.
