      @@ericolens3 These aren't exactly "fighting" games, per se, but you might try looking into Assassin's Creed: Origins, Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, and the newest one, Assassin's Creed: Valhalla.
      Origins has special boss types where you fight beings from Egyptian mythology. Odyssey has Mythical creatures as special bosses, such as the Cyclops, the Minotaur, and Medusa, among others. And Valhalla has mythical creatures as well, although I don't know which ones. Valhalla is, as I'm sure you can guess based on the name, based on the world of the Norse (Vikings).
      The games themselves don't focus primarily on the Mythological aspects, but they do offer, as all the games in the Assassin's Creed series, the chance to learn a bit about actual history, be it people, places, buildings, groups, or events. older games in the series provided short-ish bios that you could read from the menu at any point in the games once you had encountered the thing, place, event, group, or person in question at least once, and would update with more info for certain things if something happened to them that was particularly important in history, or the plot of the game (for the plot of the game, it would always alter the way they died from truly historical to just mentioning how you killed them, but that's only for the characters in the games that you have to kill for the plot. Others who die in their historical way in-game are remembered as such, if that makes sense).
      As for the three particular Assassin's Creed games I mentioned above - Origins, Odyssey, & Valhalla, they are much more of an RPG-style than any of the previous entries in the series. but they also offer much larger worlds to explore, and, for the first time ever in the series, mythological beings.

    When I went into the catacombs the non-tourist way (for legal reasons this is a joke), I was surprised that they way we went in wasn’t patrolled or something. I don’t speak great French, and one of the guides who couldn’t really speak English explained why there weren’t policemen, but I didn’t get most of it. To get to this entrance, you had to climb over a wall that was very much in public without any cover. I’m sure we would have gotten in trouble if anyone passing by called the police. Anyway, it was a great experience going through the catacombs, and I saw some interesting stuff. If you’re going, make sure you get a guide. A FRENCH guide. Someone who has been down there before and knows their way around.

    I live in Paris and I had the opportunity to visit the catacombs with a cataphile. An incredible experience. The tunnels are quite deep under the surface, it took some time of climbing down to reach the network. It's so deep even rats don't go down there, there is no food for them.
    We entered through a hole by an abandoned railway in the south of Paris.
    We walked with water up to our waist for some time, as it had rained and a lot of water had infiltrated. I was able to see a very, very deep underground well full of water. We also visited a few famous rooms, but most of them very small. It's not the mine of Moria: ceilings are very low and paths are narrow. It's quite oppressing (even me with my tiny frame and my love for tunnels was feeling oppressed down there).
    People down there mostly listen to electro music and smoke weed (air was a bit thick...). Chill people. Older cataphiles don't really welcome noobs ("tourists") and use artificial smoke to lose them and discourage them!
    But this underground culture is very respectful of the place and plays a part in making sure the catacombs are preserved. Not a single piece of litter or bad smell down there!
    I think I remember seeing the tomb of that guy spoken about in this video. I barely saw a fraction of the whole network, it's so big and meandering. And we were in there for 6 hours!
    To exit, we crawled in a tiny hole (forwards, then upwards), and then crossed tunnels of cables (belonged to a phone company), climbed a few ladders and exited into the street through a maintenance trap door. I was covered with dirt! Good times.
    I would have loved to go back but I didn't have the connections (guide was the friend of a friend, and not interested in getting an apprentice...). I don't think I could find the entrance again today. Plus, entrances are often condemned by the authorities and cataphiles have to find new ways in.
    You could have mentioned that in the North of Paris, the stone is a different one than the south: therefore stone quarries are open and not tunnels. One of them became a very cool park called Les Buttes Chaumont. That's why there aren't tunnels in the North of Paris.

      Cool about the HP scar! A small portion of the catacombs is still generally open for tourism (though I’m sure covid has changed that for now!) but the rest is closed off; with a lot of people dubbing that small section as ‘the catacombs’ as a whole despite it being comparatively very small. You'd be surprised, but a lot of cities in Europe have tunnels under them... you know, most European cities are a few hundred years old, and if you can build up you can also dig down. Though most of us know rooughly where the tunnels are when you build /just check historical maps), on rare occasions we do find old tunnels.
      It is not unheard of once they start building, everything stops for a few months because they found something for arecheologists to have a look at before they can continue. They don't even need to dig for building something, not long ago our central church had to fix its floors and renovations stopped for several weeks because they found a piece of the older parts of the city walls. Europe, we are used to it ;)

    • @kateschmid2889
      @kateschmid2889 3 года назад +10

      I had a strange experience! I was also there about the time of the strikes, but they were open on the day we booked! Someone else had booked for us, so I hadn't seen the website/booking website. Anyway, once inside, we got those audio guide things to listen to, then I noticed a guide telling another group some facts, so I tried to listen and she told us we weren't allowed to listen to her! (She was telling them something about info she was given when she bought an apartment in Paris). That group was also allowed into more private parts of the catacombs. I was confused as to why they got a better tour, and when I asked (politely), the guides acted like I was crazy and were rude to me. Found out later there were multiple ticket options and we had the cheap ones. I didn't see anything interesting that I hadn't already seen on Google before and it was extra frustrating watching the other groups get their "better" tour! So ja, if you get the chance to go in future, get the more expensive tickets if you can!
      Also because I was frustrated, I walked through quickly and finished early so they searched my bag, thinking I had just taken the tour to steal some bones!

    • @gnarthdarkanen7464
      @gnarthdarkanen7464 3 года назад +3

      Got my chance(s) in the 90's... Took a tour-bus to Paris when my ship was docked in Cannes...
      Anyway, I did get the more expensive tour... It was AWESOME... The pic's and vid's you see are still kind of "filtered" if that makes sense. There's no better way to let the gravity sink in than to walk through and see and touch the tunnels.
      AND if you should ever get into an underground tour that's a bit "dodgy" (no matter where)... Keep at least one spare light source that's reliable and old-school... like an old lantern you can wrap in foam in your pack... AND chalk. I prefer "Sidewalk chalk" because a stick will last longer... As you enter the underground (cave, caverns, old mines, anything really) and reach an intersection step near a clean spot on a wall and right at a specific level of your body (I use my shoulder mostly) mark a triangle pointing exactly back the way you came... Don't worry about which way you're going. That's no good. It sounds good, but it's terribly unreliable, especially when you're worried about the longevity of your light and starting to shit pants... Point the thing back down the tunnel the way you came in... This will automatically indicate the way OUT... white chalk is usually best, but not always, so several colors should be brought in a small bundle together... and protect it. This way, as the rocks change colors, you can pick colors that stand out. AND repeat this process at EVERY intersection... EVERY branching off... ALWAYS on the same side of the tunnel you've used, so you know right where to look and how high the next mark should be... This could save your life one day (because I know how tempting it is to go check out dodgy places with dodgy people)...
      Don't ask me how I know about this sort of thing, and I won't have to lie to you. ;o)

    When I was a child, I had a recurring dream that I was standing in an underground tunnel that was carved out of rock, facing the opposite tunnel wall, where standing human skeletons were lined up side by side, as far as I could see, down the length of the tunnel. As I stood and watched, two men dressed in lab coats came into view, one held a lantern, and the other had a clipboard. The two would stop at each skeleton, the man holding the clipboard would make a few notes, then they would move on to the next skeleton in the row, and repeat the ritual, taking notes. I can't recall how many times I had this dream, but the last time that I had it, (during the dream) I realized that I was actually one of the skeletons, that the wall that I was standing against was also lined with a row of skeletons. It was the creepiest dream, and I had never heard of the Paris catacombs. When I was a child, I don't believe that the catacombs had been explored much, or mentioned. I wonder where the seeds for that dream originated. It scared the crap out of me.

    I've never been to Paris, but I once went on a tour through some catacombs underneath a Franciscan monastery and another set underneath the main Catholic (I believe, don't remember for sure) church in Peru. The ones underneath the second aren't used anymore, but I was told that a monk had recently been buried in the Franciscan one, which we explored more thoroughly. We obviously were only allowed to see the long-dead bodies that were just bones, but it was still kind of creepy to think about it and see dark tunnels off to the sides.

While it's not about the catacombs beneath Paris collapsing, it does give you a feeling for the time period and what a collapse would be like (it's got a great cast, Dustin Hoffman and Alain Rickman, bot favorite actors of mine.)

      There are a great many reasons one should at least spend a few days at a time in Paris. It depends on the time of year, though... They have a WONDERFUL wine tasting festival along the Champs Elysee. There are tons of out of the way shops that cater to nearly any palette or craving you might have. AND if you're just a bit jovial about your poor command of the language, but authentically TRY to work on your French, they're actually not nearly as rude or mean as the stereotypes. Tours are offered at various spots, but taking a local (who has the time) to lunch is also a good way to find out places you really should see and things you really should do (instead of the dumb touristy crap like the tower and louvre... like everyone else) before leaving Paris... It's how I found out about the Catacombs in the 90's when I went. ;o)
