A few months in, I noticed my ability to tune my guitar by ear has been improved dramatically, and now I constantly get compliments about my singing that I can tell are much more genuine than the simple “politeness” I had received before. Thanks Aimee, I owe you a lot for this one, and to anyone discouraged by the difficulty of this exercise (at first I felt like I had no control and I couldn’t do anything about my flatness or sharpness), like anything else in music, if you keep dedicating the hours you will come out successful.
So this is what I learned from the app. No one in my family learned to sing or play an instrument. Sure we could play a record player or cassette tape. I have always wanted to learn sing or play an instrument. Finally at age 58 I am going to learn. All I want to be able to do is sing one or two karaoke songs. Been watching several youtube videos and ran into this one. This is what I found out using the app. I am a bass. That sure answers the question of why I would try to sing an 80's pop song and people would ask me to stop! Thank you.
I was really only searching for a vocal tuning app video as I fid myself singing off pitch, and you have found the best one for me... So this is my first viewing of your videos and I find your style and presentation so very interesting and watchable.... So I've checked out a few of your others and now I am one of your biggest fans... Thank You Aimee!!!!!
Thank you Aimee, you are by far the best musical instructor on RUclips! The piano and voice lessons are fantastic and you're the first one I've come across that teaches how to play by ear! That is what I've been finding so challenging for so many years and your guidance has helped tremendously! I love that you are able to get your lessons across in a very effective and caring way. Your kind and graceful approach is very helpful for those of us who have the burning desire, but lack the raw musical talent that few are gifted with. You are very inspiring and your efforts are greatly appreciated!
Also the InsTuner is really useful with the Strobe View. Anytime I start getting cocky with my pitch all it takes is about 30 seconds trying to lock that strobe dead center and I am once again humbled. It is a great warmup to go from your lowest note to highest note in your vocal range ... locking the strobe into not moving... taking your time with each note... and seeing how long you can hold that note with the strobe locked in the middle. It is painfully humbling but immensely useful for ear training and teaching yourself to sing on pitch.
This video is just awesome, Aimee. Using the app, for the first time in years, was able to find my vocal range. I'm an Alto :) And now that I have a keyboard piano, I can now learn to match pitch. I've always had trouble knowing exactly what key I am singing in, but now I can learn to sing pitch perfect. Thank you so much. :)
Thanks Aimee, I did it and in one try, I my voice improved. I'm a new singer, but the app really helped me feel by breath control and cord closure. After a while I got a bit fatigued, and then I stopped belting out my same old blown-out, rough sounding tone and everything settled down (with me concentrating on getting the pitch right on) and my breath settled down and the cords found new closure and finesse and I actually started to make a real singer tone. It was really cool. Thanks a ton!
Just found this and wow! I've been using tuners with jumpy needles for ages, and the wheel display really makes a difference. Now that I can actual see my microtuning, I'm really curious about voice exercises to sharpen and flatten pitch in a narrower range.
This is good stuff. In addition to practicing with an electronic tuner, it is valuable (even essential) to practice with drones. If you put on a set of headphones and hum (don't sing, hum) a unison, octave, fifth, major third, minor seventh, major ninth, minor third, etc, with an overtone-rich drone (like those in Stephen Colley's "Tune Up" program), you will train your ear to sing intervals that slot properly with the chord. Against the root of a chord, fifths need to be slightly sharp, major thirds need to be flat, minor sevenths need to be VERY flat, etc. Because of this, it is very important to practice humming with drones in headphones, as this isolates the sound as it reverberates in your head.
Per your suggestion, I have been working with this app in combination with recording my warm-ups and rehearsals for about six months now and have greatly improved my pitch issues. Oh its far from perfect, but I can tell by the reaction of the audience and other musicians that they can hear the improvement.
This video is amazing and changed the way I play piano I've always had a good voice and been able to sing the song in tune but now using this app lets me see what note I'm hitting with my voice and let's me play songs by ear way faster after knowing the root note.
These comments give me hope 😭❤️ I am so out of tune and can’t replicate the notes with my voice, I never know if I’m doing it right but this video is just so amazing!! Thank you sooooo much!!
Nice, old video but it was on my home page screen so I watched. I think I'll use one when I do my warm up exercises even though my teacher is playing the notes on the piano (on RUclips) I'll use headphones for their playing then sing in the room with th app on - I think that should work? We'll see!
Thanks Aimee. Really nice. I teach guitar and vocals, and have been trying to use guitar tuner apps to help my students. And you're right. Most of them are way too "jumpy". Thanks for turning me onto instuner. It's much better.
This still works to this day, at first I was too obsessive over making it always green, but watch your video again showed me it doesn’t always have to exact once it’s close and it helped a lot You still use this today?
I am an Android user and I like to use Pano Tuner. If you watch the Britians Got Talent clip with the Deaf woman singing and playing the Ukulele, you will see that is what she uses as well. Aimee, you may not like it because it is jumpy like the others, but I like that has the option to display the soulfege (do re me fa so la ti do) instead of the note names. You have to be sure to select the transpose and transpose it to the key in which you will be singing for the soulfege to be correct, but I find that it is a great tool.
Thanks mate. Appreciate the app and the advice. I’m trying to get back to basics after a way-too-long break and this is one of those little ideas that has huge benefits. Very clever. Again thanks.
I use InsTuner as a trumpet player. Thanks for suggestions, like nailing intervals. I went to the last nine years of theJamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop. Alas, it is no more; Curse you Covid! Jamey said that he made up an ear training exercise that he often used while driving. He would blow a starting note on his old-school pitch pipe, sing up the scale, then check to see if he nailed the octave. Ditto intervals.
Great app, regretfully not for my android phone, but on my ipad it works well with that wheel; this gave me inspiration to finally buy and start playing saxophone again (in tune this time!). Thanks!
Thanks for posting. Was looking to recommend some app to some of our students. And I like your humor (best music teachers use that - your look re: G strings, lol). best, JN
Anyone know of an app that plays a note and you have to sing it in tune? I don't think I'm anywhere near ready to just try to hit random notes like these apps seem to have you do.
This is great :D I just have one question. How much are you "allowed" to be off the dead centre? How many cents? I can see the dial wavering a bit when you produce a tone but it doesn't sound off. So what kind of playing room do we have?
Lord have mercy! All these years I've been telling myself I could sing pretty well and BLOOEY..................did you ever just straighten me out. Just sang the first 10 notes of " Somewhere over the rainbow" and only hit 2 of the 10 on the money. Yikes................. Thank you......I think............
A Wonderful lesson. It's given me some great ideas to practice my intervals. InsTuner isn't in Android's play store. I did find CarlTune with a very similar wheel. It also displays the note on the staff. It's fun making the needle jump around the dial. I wish it displayed the scale degrees. But I'm getting faster in translating numbers to the actual note. It is a pain when a song modulates. Numbers don't change. 😄 How close should a student get in pitch? 25 cents? 15? 10? I'm not a guitar. Zero probably ain't happening. 😗
Martin B oh mannnnn something to do with my server...it keeps re-downloading them after I've deleted them. I need to figure out how to stop that in my settings! I don't really have that many! ;)
Thank you, Aimee. That was a really helpful post. I'm singing backup vocals in our little band, so I always have to sing outside of my comfort zone. Tested a bunch of apps for Android and there's one called TE Tuner. Make sure you set the mode to voice, though. Thanks from Berlin, Tom #berlinbayband

it's been two years, do you still like this best? I'm looking for something that will listen to me and tell me if im hitting notes as well as I think I am but I may just need to hire a coach haha
They’ve upgraded this App, its even better now. I wouldn’t worry about being flat or sharp vocally, that’s your sound. Live there’s always some instruments slightly out of tune, and if everyone was perfectly in tune including your voice, it’d sound sterile AF. This is fun, but in the real world perfect pitch is kind of a curse.
You have a lovely voice. And it stands for instrument tuner. That usually just means it's not chromatic. Thxs for the cool idea! I'm going to attempt to teach myself how to sing backup and I'm going to use some of your videos to help me. Thxs!
I was thinking about using this for getting the intonation correct on a cello. But both my teacher and an article I read where dead against it. The argument is that when you are in a tune you should be able to hear it in the resonance of the cello and how all the other strings react. You want to train your ear and fingers to adjust the position in real time. Using an app means you using involving the eyes as well. On a fretless string instrument its all about muscle memory and your ear being very sensitive to how the instrument is responding.
Well, there is a difference between being in tune with the position of your fingers and having your open strings in tune before you start playing. The tuning app is a fine idea to actually tune the open strings.
I just downloaded the INS tuner, it did not have the wheel associated with it. I’m not real sharp at this tech stuff but the icon looked the same as yours and it said free, although it has been updated
This video was posted in 2017. Back then, the Ins Tuner was only available for iOS systems (Apple). I have an android Galaxy - does anyone know if the Ins Tuner has been upgraded for android OS ?? I can't find one on any search engine.
I have a problem that if I sing it dead on key (multiple syllables) then it sounds mono tone until it changes key. If I sing it relative to key then it jumps around from one note to another. I always seem to be in the middle note of a chord instead of the root.
I downloaded the free app on my iPad and the dial/circle reference did not appear. Only the top red/green area. The bottom 2/3’s of the screen is black. Do you know why?
Aimee- gosh you''re pretty in a lovely natural way. G- strings are women's bathing costumes here in Oz. As to sharp and Flat I have good days and bad days- What to do? I played trombone and violin and can tune to within 3 cents. My ears tell me when I'm flat- always been the nominated singer- hate the spotlight- I need a guitar to hide behind. What can I do about my irregular voice?
Tuning apps are often used to invade your privacy. Obviously, to work they have to have access to your microphone. The problem is if you do not set the right privacy settings, they can listen whenever they want. I figured this out when I noticed that I was getting a lot of online ads that related to private conversations I recently had. To test this, my wife and I had a conversation about buying a new car. We really were not interested in a new car, so we had not searched online for anything related to new cars. Nevertheless, the next day I started seeing ads related to buying a new car. I removed all the "free" apps (including a free tuning app) that used the microphone from my phone and the ads related to my conversations stopped.
You don’t even have to sing a note to test if you’re about to sing on pitch. If you play a note and put your mouth opening as if you were going to sing it to a little speaker or your phone you will hear the resonance boost if you’ve got it. There’s a cool video on this technique by Gary Sage showing using a phone as a vowel resonator.
@@kirstenanderson3783 I haven’t tried it yet but no idea, the numbers 0 to 8 don’t make sense to me. I don’t think it’s anything to worry about. The difference between each note is usually measured in cents (100 cents is a semitone or half step) and cents show how sharp or flat you are.
But how do you sing in tune for a song? Change the tune of your voice for each chord change? And for example what do you do for minor chords, em, am, bm etc.
2019 Hey Aimee, you are adorable and knowledgeable about music, especially the mental aspect of music. So, a story that fits with your opening - I've been a singer for all my life, in between those day jobs : ) anyway always learned songs by just repetitive playing the songs over and over and most of my jobs were in top 40 bands - finally in my late 30's I ge a neat gig that lasted two years a cabaret musical - and most were really consistent singers and also Berklee School of music, yeah, some already graduates and a few students. This includes the band also..man it was a great 2 year run. Anyway, the piano player, Deena had a job as a backup singer for a group that was having a cd release party - cut to the chae, she asks me would I want to do it and I did..and she kept hitting this note on the piano in practice and couldn't believe I really couldn't hear that I was, think it was sharp, and I couldn't, was it probably close enough, yeah, though here she is obviously with a better ear than I - she wasn't mind more like, really, really...no no no, I cannot hear I'm not hitting that note. The funny thing - man oh man that band was so loud, I mean vibrations rattling my brain and I was so disoriented a bit. I like the that Ins Tuner too - think we're both visual in "seeing" abstract things such as notes, though your ear, didn't need that much help. Thanks for your tips - I see it's inactive, yet these past few days when I've posted what seems like an old or no longer in use that much, I get answer. Will bookmark this page. : )
Total Energy Tuner is really amazing. Great drones. Play them over your earphones and then sing into the microphone. It will show you your pitch overtime which is super helpful.
OK, I've got a weird one. Pick a note, any note, and I'm flat. Just a touch. I have a frequency monitor, and if it's C3 at 130hz, I sing 128ish. Jump the fifth to G3 at 196hz, and I'll sing 193ish. Huh? Yeah, I'm in my 60s but I used to be a professional singer, so it's pretty scary. And it's not like I can't physically produce the sound, cause when I see the monitor I can tune my voice correctly. But I'm not matching the sound I hear. Play C130, I sing C128..... and etc, etc. Any thoughts, please? Is this air flow, resonators, the chords... in other words, something physical? Or have I somehow learned to be tone deaf? Thanks for any help.
Aimee Nolte Music thanks for the reply. I was wondering if I would get response or not cause I regard you and Rock Beato idols in music, I am humbled to have a reply from you. However, mam I have another question, Rick Beato says we cannot learn or develop perfect pitch, its an inborn talent or must be trained at a very tender age. Is it doable mam? learning and developing perfect pitch
Lots of practice. Train your ear to hear what A sounds like and then match it with your voice. Over time you will memorize it and hum the pitch in A without reference. Maybe not perfect but you'll be close
Do you think it's practical to use this app to find the chords at the time of worship practice? Instead of waiting for chords I can I can work upon finding it this way and play along? Wow anyways iam going to try it, cause I think you cracked it. 😁👌

@@AimeeNolte Thats for sure. Thanks for your great content and for your interest in your viewers even after all these years.
this is fab thanks. any idea of an android app?
I just downloaded the INS tuner, it did not have the wheel associated with it. I’m not real sharp at this tech stuff but the icon looked the same as yours and it said free, although it has been updated
Best and most helpful video. Thank you
This video was posted in 2017.
Thanks for this video, I really mean it. I hope you put sense into some noob singer.
So helpful, Aimee. Thank you!!
This is great! I'll be right back in a couple years and I'll be Mel Torme! But seriously -for practicing intervals this is the BOMB
I've been looking for thing like this. Thanks!
Thank you for this video. I always wanted to know exactly what note I am singing.
No prob! Glad to help!
Or the TE Tuner, this one's great for students on clarinet, oboe and flute.
What an awesome idea!
You are good!
I on the other hand, I have to do more vocal practice. Thanks for this idea. I downloaded a tuner and its great
I downloaded the free app on my iPad and the dial/circle reference did not appear. Only the top red/green area. The bottom 2/3’s of the screen is black. Do you know why?
App’s like this are so cool 😎. I tune my guitars, Uke and hopefully one day my voice as I have failed to do it by ear.
This is very valuable...thank you!
What can I do about my irregular voice?
you are great history teller
how do i know tho like which note am i suppose to hit ?
I like the wheel too. Great. Thanks so much
Hey Aimee. What's your warm up routine? Thanks.
I removed all the "free" apps (including a free tuning app) that used the microphone from my phone and the ads related to my conversations stopped.
the "how the hell do I know?" in the beginning is exactly me haha
You don’t even have to sing a note to test if you’re about to sing on pitch. If you play a note and put your mouth opening as if you were going to sing it to a little speaker or your phone you will hear the resonance boost if you’ve got it. There’s a cool video on this technique by Gary Sage showing using a phone as a vowel resonator.
Do you know what the numbers on the wheel mean?
@@kirstenanderson3783 I haven’t tried it yet but no idea, the numbers 0 to 8 don’t make sense to me. I don’t think it’s anything to worry about. The difference between each note is usually measured in cents (100 cents is a semitone or half step) and cents show how sharp or flat you are.
Are the pitches in equal temperament tuning, just intonation or some other
I just got the INS TUNER but it looks nothing like yours. There is no wheel. Bummer since I paid for it.
WHat if you have android?
Carl tuner
Thank you
@@joetroutt7425 Thanks 😊👍
Thanks for the unboxing this!
By far best one is te tuner. It has a specific vocal mode and allows drones and chords to be played simultaneously to sing along with
But how do you sing in tune for a song?
Does anyone know if there's something like this for windows desktop?
I want your opinion about bandmate
How do I download the Ins tuner...
How do you memorise the note i. e. note of A or F#? as you did without the help of any music instrument.
See my video about how to develop perfect pitch
Aimee Nolte Music thanks for the reply. I was wondering if I would get response or not cause I regard you and Rock Beato idols in music, I am humbled to have a reply from you.
However, mam I have another question, Rick Beato says we cannot learn or develop perfect pitch, its an inborn talent or must be trained at a very tender age.
Is it doable mam? learning and developing perfect pitch
He’s right. In the video I say that you can’t really develop perfect pitch, but you can develop very good relative pitch.
