- Binky should need no introduction, but in case it does go visit @Bad Obsession Motorsport to see the build in it's full excessive bracket detail. Here Nik Blackhurst fires up Binky at the end of the show and loads it onto the trailer, which is just wide enough.
Nik & Richard brought Binky to the Historic Rally Festival at Weston Park on Sunday 16th October 2022. The Festival is a celebration of classic rally cars, which can be seen in action throughout the weekend at various locations near Telford.
For those that like to speculate - no, Binky is not finished. Nik had to reassemble the car for the show, even then parts were missing on the stand and Nik fired it up only a few times as the map is not sorted, idiot lights on the dash were not wired up and safety cutouts in the ECU are not implemented. What you see in the video represents probably 1/4 of the mileage the car has done in public under it's own power. Once finished, a proper rolling road session is needed to sort out the map so it runs properly. None of this stops the car being awesome in the metal - you missed out if you didn't come and see it!
Many thanks to the @Bad Obsession Motorsport team. Although I never did get a bit of that banana cake.

Nik is a clever guy, he installed a switchable tune to go from sorted to balky carburetor cold start mode on demand. Makes for quite the realistic depiction at a rustic venue.
I really would like to see a final episode on binky.
An update would provide some closure after 9 years.
Glad you kept the original character, she bad starts, stalls and misfires just like a proper mini ;)
Hahaha, who said Minis haven’t got feelings! Even when you try to rip it’s beating heart out, it still retains that “nah, not today” attitude. Once a Classic Mini always a Classic Mini 😂
After the years following this build, it's nice to see Binky finally moving under it's own power, albeit a bit hit and miss but that's to be expected considering Binky is a prototype and a one off
Good to see it moving at last.
Its a throwback to the very first episode..., "As if you doubted it..."😆
Amazing it still sounds like an A series engine
Good to see the Mini in action, finally!! Greets from Spain
A perfect example of the quote “perfection is the enemy of done”. Speaking of which, I am. What a bummer.
8 years later, and it won’t stay running. I’m disappointed.
Even though that’s a Celica in there it still sounds like a Mini.
Wow, congratulations. I've been following this build. I'd love to see more of it driving.
I think we all would 😂😂
I gave up in the end. Just happened across this today. Same old unfortunately.
that tickover needs a bracket making to hold it up!
Yep more brackets 😂
Beautiful art.
Yes good to see, but too early yet, it is not yet really finished enough to go on show.
I would love to see the finished car and admire all those brackets.
Mmmmm brackets 🤤
Hi Great - how about an update program on what has changed. It has been part of my life growing up and many others
Sounds rough 😮
Its alive! It's alive!! (You can hear it breathe!)
Seriously though, I have concerns that there is not enough room behind the radiators for the waste/hot air to escape and freash/cooling air to pass through, meaning Binky might overheat. For an analogy, consider Betz's Law.
I'm sure you watched the build but to say 'there's not enough room' is an understatement.
@@mattydare Indeed, I have, and indeed you are right. It is not just a matter of fitting everything in there, but of the flow of air (which is a fluid) through the radiator (to extract the heat) and then that air/fluid needs to be expelled. My concern is that the radiator(s) is effectively blocked, and I saw nothing (no calculations, no rule-of-thumb guesstimates) in the BOM vidoes that addresses this.
@@taylormade_at_aut Yes. I'm sure the airmass movement achievable through the original bonnet grille then through the intercooler, radiator and out under the engine will be insufficent. But don't worry, Nik will construct a custom bracket to take care of this.
well it moves and has a long last long crank battery On the seat edge waiting for more Like the rest of the Universe
Desperately needs a tune.
Give them some time..........
Give it six years…….
Don't let it end like this
When you get the escargot done you need to film an Italian job special and drive it in while driving the escargot. Just don't tip it over a cliff 👍
And then there's the Gold 😂
You’re only supposed to blow the bleeding’ doors off!
Need to put some honey in the oil, that bearing rattle is nasty!
MoTeC …. As we say in Australia… there is no tech like MoTeC ..the idle sounds like the fuel table is way to course ? What sort of rpm resolution are you working with ?
They are running on a base map without tuning, fairly sure it is running extremely rich and without proper timing for the injectors
Hey. Who forgot the petrol?
Sounds great if a little rough. Bigger trailer needed?
That's a first one for a Mini 🤣
What are those rims?
I would call this parking not driving.
I would hazard a guess that BOMs next vid will be 'blinky gets mapped '
My guess is that will be after something about the Weston event (Ben was filming lots - I'll probably appear in their timelapse!) and a video detailing the saga with the electronics and instruments (that has caused all the delay)
Typical Mini [Non starter] Try the Dizzy or Cap Bro. Built MANY Minis in my time which is why i stayed the course on this build.
If you were following this build you'd know that there's no distributor and no distributor cap. Don't lie to try and look smart
Needs mapping properly
umm... you need a wider trailer!
or thinner tires : )
sad that we have to watch random channels to see this car actually drive.
Yes running on three plus nasty bottom end rattle on the cold start before the oil pressure came up…Also I noticed the special trick paintwork on the rear side panels has gone? (Or is this a Mk2 Binky?)
It's still there.. you just can't see it in this video
One job!!! Eat your cake or load the car!!!!! Why was this so much like my Wife guiding me while reversing the caravan
Dearie me.
Barely fits on the trailer. There's a bracket for that. Lol
22s Fart and stall 😀
First time I seen finished product...actually disappointing to look at .
Over-engineered bag o' bolts.
Bad obsession, bad starting, bad looks.
BUY A BETTER TRAILER
A shame that it's become a bit superfluous now. It's no good having custom this, gold plated that if you don't take the trouble to make it run properly. All show and no go. Wouldn't cross the road to kick the tyres.
Huh?? It's not done yet, like last year they probably scrambled to get it together a bit more just so they could show off the progress at the fest. I doubt someone like Nick would leave it like that
Please tell us about your achievements in any sphere.
@@dogphlap6749 watch this video again and then you go first.
@@troo_story If it is not clear my comment was to Chris B. He chose to be critical of a wonderful piece of automotive fettling. So naturally I would like to see his achievements, which I suspect are non-existent. Why do you want me to watch the video again ? It is made clear that the project is not finished, in particular the fuel injection and ignition timing have yet to be finalised.
edit: Well I built a rally mini back in the late nineteen sixties which started out as an 850 but I put an A series engine from a Austin 1300 into it (with a half race cam shaft, stage 2 head, 28/36 Weber and works exhaust system), still keeping the original gearbox which was nowhere near strong enough (I had to rebuild that a lot), also original 850 drum brakes with AM4 and VG95 friction material for the 2 shoes of each front drum, the AM4 would fade first while the VG95 would not fade but the coefficient of friction was so low they would hardly slow the car. I doubled up on the front shocks. With more money I would have put discs or at least a brake servo on the car but you do what you can afford. I put 12" Hillman Imp wheels on the front to allow the car to go faster without over revving (standard 10" wheels on the back). Got a few minor cups but never won anything outright (not even close).
They've got it in little pieces again - customizing their own dash so all the gauges, and dash lights all match, even making their own PCB's FFS. It will never be finished because they can't help themselves - mad as lorries, the pair of em.
