We are a peaceful people who never wanted the british butchers and their violent culture here. The scars are still visible and people like me will never forgive or forget. My grandfather and his brothers suffered deeply and were evicted from their land in the south. We want to live in peace but we're always ready of they want to try again.
It might come to that. One of their uneducated government, unaware that UK imported much of its food from Ireland, threatening to starve us again if we didn't support their racist brexit. No respect for us but even worse the 2 million of us they starved during the genocide of An Gorta Mór. They don't even understand if they declare war or invasion against us now they are declaring it against EU27. TiofTiocfaidh ár lá.
Taken from us too soon at 43, and we can't even blame it on the British, but with enough Guinness we can probably come up with something. I stop by his statue probably twice a week, have a smoke, watch the tourist take photos and enjoy my home town I love so well.

I honestly never expected to see anyone react to this. The lyrics are strong with a lot of Irish songs. The Fields of Athenry (about the Great Hunger), Grace (about the wife of one of the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising), Isle of Hope Isle of Tears (about Annie Moore, the first immigrant to set foot on Ellis Island), Amhrán na bhFiann (in English: The Soldier's Song, the Irish National Anthem.) I absolutely recommend all of them for reactions. This is the best month for it, after all.
The first time I heard that song, it was in Derry/Londonderry being sung by John Hulme who won the Nobel for bringing peace to Northern Island with the Good Friday Agreement. In later years I heard it sung by the Dubliners live in concert.

Hearing this song again now, I would like to dedicate it to the Ukrainian people.. as an Irish person one has to admire the Ukrainians 'bruised, never broken' spirit.. so many of their cities and towns destroyed by Putin, so many killed and wounded, so many displaced. I remember when all the Irish refugees fled South to Dublin. I was final year at school and the school encouraged us to go to the RDS in the city centre where the refugees were brought in the initial chaos before finding accomodation for them all.. and sign up to help a family. My friend and I were not able to take a family to live in our homes, but befriended a family instead.. which meant that we visited them in the army camp where they were accommodated, got them things they needed, took them out or for meals in our homes etc. Their house had been burned down the night they fled and their little 2 year old boy had stopped speaking since that night and didn't speak for months afterwards. When I saw all the millions of refugees flood from their towns and villages out of Ukraine at the start of Putin's brutal invasion of their country and neighboring countries mobilizing rapidly to provide for their basic needs, it brought that time of refugees from Northern Ireland fleeing South all back and how traumatic it was for them. My thoughts to all refugees from any country who are forced by violence from their homes and their way of life..

This is a fantastic song, but this version isn't great. I'm not sure if the guitarist, Ronnie Drew, simply played it wrong by accident (they were all heavy drinkers) or if this was an earlier rendition they later elaborated on, but literally every other recording if this I've heard is different to this, and far more moving.
