Cannot believe Luke Kelly is being viewed outside of Ireland. He's one of the greatest singing talents of all time. Thank you for spreading his brilliance. I believe the child here has "downs" in the 1960s / 1970s and the guilt parents felt. Thank God its changed nie
Beautiful song written by Phil Coulter who had a child with down syndrome who died aged 4 and wrote this during his grief. Luke Kelly is an astounding vocalist and this version with just a few guys hanging out in a pub is gorgeously sad.
LUKE KELLY WAS A WONDERFUL DUBLIN. EIRE, BORN VOCALIST, R.I.P. HE SINGS A SONG WRITTEN BY PHIL COULTER, ALSO A WELL KNOWN, PIANIST & SONGWRITING TALENT, ON HIS OWN FROM CO DERRY. IRELAND. WRITTEN FOR HIS CHILD WHO DIED AT 4-YRS OLD. BEAUTIFUL RENDITION FOR ANY PARENT TO LISTEN TO. THIS SONG. WILL BE AROUND FOREVER.❤
Our beautiful Sinéad O'Connor also did a rendition of this song, so tragic considering how her precious son died in recent years RIP😢 Phil Coulter also wrote, the iconic The Town I Loved So Well, about the troubles/war in Ireland, how the Brits tried to destroy our beautiful Derry City. Poor Phil, also lost his brother & sister in separate drownings. He's an amazing man.
Reminds me of my beloved child he couldn't walk or talk but he understood everything people said and tears would come when people made comments sadly his gone to god we see him again I want to see his beautiful face again
Ah god, me heart. I’m Irish myself but never really listened to this song. I have a daughter myself with special needs, a lot of the words we don’t say out loud.
Luke Kelly is an Irish legend, not just for this song. We grew up knowing to respect those with disabilities & help them. We find it harder to understand those who dont..
I'm Irish and not all Irish people respected those with disabilities. I think there is a lot more understanding now but back then there were definitely idiots who verbally abused those with special needs.
The happiness i see in a child with downsyndrome eyes and non judgmental sometimes i say to my self they could teach us a lesson,, about being happy or our own struggle to be happy carefree and open to love and joy in small things , this song is so emotional and i think of theses things when i hear it a Beautiful song about beautiful people .
Thank you for bringing back a memory albeit a painful one. I knew this song when I was a child - we used to have cassette tapes of the Dubliners of which Luke Kelly was a member and he used to sing that song. When I was older I had forgotten about the song but I did have a disabled child. Driving through east Cork one day with my wife and family it came on the radio and I turned it up - well we both were crying at the end - I didn't play it since and skipped through the song itself when you played it here. My son passed away at 15 - I didn't know that Phil Coulter had a Trisomy 21 child and that he wrote this song when his child died - thanks. “The great Gaels of Ireland are the men that God made mad, For all their wars are merry, and all their songs are sad.”
Great choice for a reaction! Luke Kelly was a genius at his craft. His version of Raglan Road is one of my all time favourite songs. There's also The Town I Loved So Well.
Raglan Road is Luke at his undeniable best!! I know we all have a favourite “Hand me down my Bible” and “Wild Rover” are my top 2, but Luke’s songs can touch every part of your soul!! All the Dubliners are dearly missed 💚🤍🧡
Such a beautiful classic Irish ballad being sang by one of Ireland’s greatest artists. I love seeing the reaction on your face when you tapped into the song’s message. Your face kinda lit up after the first verse. You said you live with a condition that makes communicating with other people a struggle. Talking into a camera in an empty room is easy but posting it online so the whole world can see you is one of the bravest things anyone can do. You sir are stronger and braver than most people. You have thousands of followers on RUclips and you express yourself in an open and honest way.
I am from Ireland. My brother had Downs Syndrome. I loved him dearly. He was put away in a Christian Brothers home for people like him. When he was home on "short" holidays, the door bell might ring and I would have to hide him in the bedroom. For the life of me as a young child I couldn't make out why. In those days it was a "Shame" on the family to have a child like this. When my parents passed I could finally go visit and take him out and show him off. Nobody stared at him. Times were changing and I think they are still changing for the better. I see people out with kids with all types of disabilities and I usually make a point of saying hello to them. I see mothers and fathers proudly show them off and looking after some of them is quite a job, so it must be great for them to take their kids/adults out for a break and have a coffee and have friends join them. They guy that wrote this song had a child with a disability - I'm not sure what. A beautiful man and gifted singer songwriter and performer.
Long time sub here and an irishman. Wonderful to see you're reaction to one of our most beloved singers. Luke Kelly's voice is one of a kind. My all time favourite aomg by Him and his band the Dubliners, is called "The aul triangle". Its sung in an accapella style. And I do find myself becoming a stereotypical irish man when iv had a few pints and I start to sing it outloud
The song was written by Phil Coulter rt his son with Down Syndrome. So sweet and heartbreaking. Keep in mind....the error this was written late 1970s?? Society was not as kind or accepting as they are today!! We have come a long way. Love Luke Kelly!!
Luke Kelly was a phenomenal artist, he sang from the heart. He loved this song so much that apparently, he refused to sing it at big or rowdy venues & would only sing it at small gatherings where the audience would listen to the words & give it the respect it deserved. Thank you for sharing it.

Very moving song that Luke begged from Phil Coulter. Luke was so moved by this song that he insisted Phil would allow him to sing it. Back in the day children with special needs were called simple. This song brings many people to tears. Phil also lost his sister who tried to help one of her patients who suffered depression and left her daughters 12 th birthday to help him. He took her to her death with him when he took his life in the River Swilly, Sinead O Connor sang a song called “Shores of the Swilly” about this incident written by Phil another moving piece and worth a listen. He also lost his brother who drowned in the same place. Luke was a beautiful singer and also sang another one of Phil songs The Town I Loved so Well, which is a masterpiece.
You are wrong about that. Originally Phil Coulter didn't intend for anybody to record the song, and Luke had to ask several times before Coulter would give in and let it happen. If you don't believe me search on RUclips "Luke Kelly talking about Scorn Not His Simplicity" and it will take you to an old black and white interview with Luke explaining how he heard the song for the first time and how he had to really persuade Phil to let him record it.

Thank you for the intelligent respectful and sensitive reaction to this performance and Not talking over the violin solo which is such a part of this. The singer Luke Kelly was the lead singer with the Dubliners and like Sinead O Connor he was a "Belle Canto" singer who LIVED each song they performed.
God Bless you Luke. I got to sing with you in the Embamkment in Tallagh in Dublin. A privilege Sir. This is my home song, the song that I am known for singing in my family. I do say both Luke Kelly and Jim MCcann have the same hairstyle like Tom Baker who played the 4th incarnation of Dr Who, in the mid 70s to early 80s Tom had brown hair like Jim MCcann and also that hairstyle was common in the 70s.
Loved your take on this special song. Much respect for your insight and sharing. From an Irishman who lost a special sister, growing up in Ireland this song was special to us all and taught much of the nation as a whole...empathy ❤

This song brings me to tears, all that potential gone with the child who should have had the chance to live a life like the rest of us. All the WHAT IFs his parents wondered about, she blaming herself ,for having done something during the pregnancy to cause his Down Syndrome. So hard to lose a child, and this song is their Heart Break for everyone to hear.😢
It's more important than ever to show love and understanding to people with special needs. I knew this singer well from attending a lot of concerts with the Dubliners. He really sang from the heart, for Phil young son.
Thank you for airing this, it’s a song I played many times in my youth as I have a brother with Downs Syndrome and always felt a connection with the song. I think it was recorded in the Embankment pub up the Dublin mountains, with the Dubliners(band) having a few pints and being interviewed about their music and lives at the time. Luke Kelly sadly left us some years ago at a young(ish) age, but he is revered here in Ireland and rightly so. Phil Coulter is a phenomenal song writer, I believe he wrote ‘My Boy’ recorded and sung by none other than the King himself Elvis, which he held close to his heart, one of his better later recordings. Lovely to see this rendition of the song be acknowledged by your good self, thank you again.
love listening to your relaxed insightful reactions. you're always the coolest person in the room when I'm listening to your reactions. keep up the good work. Great song listening to it all my life.
the town i loved so well by the same writter and the same singer my friend . this and the song here might be the 2 of greatest songs in irish music EVER .
I'll never forget Luke Kelly singing the night visiting song on the late late show, my mother was crying as he was seriously ill at the time and it was his last performance a legend he was
Phil Coulter who wrote this song is a good family friend. This is my dads favourite song and he remembers knowing Phils son. Amazing song and amazing writing from Phil as per usual. And of course amazing performance from the legendary Luke Kelly.
Such a hard song to listen too. It brings me to tears every time I hear it. My beautiful baby girl will never be able to live a normal life, totally removed from the world around her. It was always a sad song to me But now it it so hard hitting. I live in fear everyday of what will happen to her when I pass. She is my greatest joy and my greatest sadness all at once. God bless all of these children. My baby has shown me the face of God and I long for the day when I will be reunited with my baby girl when we meet in His kingdom
You should also try Raglan Road. It was written by an Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh and he personally gave it to Luke Kelly to sing. It's a lyrically stunning love song.
This song truly tells the story of a parent's grief. As sung by Luke Kelly we hear the pain of a father who is helpless to change his son's situation or make the world better for him.

Luke was one of the greatest things(person) to come out of Ireland. How you could not like this song. Luke was taken too soon.😢
Thankyou, may your light shine on❤
Mr L boyd Lake Kelly , The Sun is Burning, Gabriel, Ireland 🇮🇪
Please react to more of Luke and The Dubliners!
New here. Irish. Luke is one of my Heroes. Thank you for publicising him xxx
It's more important than ever to show love and understanding to people with special needs. I knew this singer well from attending a lot of concerts with the Dubliners. He really sang from the heart, for Phil young son.
My favorite ballad singer of all a true Irish folk hero...
I love most Irish song's but one of many I really like is spancil hill.
Thank you for sharing your reaction and feelings to this amazing song. 🇮🇪 🇺🇸 😊☘️
Thank you for this amazing song and the story behind it, Luke Kelly was an amazing artist
Sinead O’Connor does an incredible version of this song as well.
Rip sinead.
@frankdunne3440 she's up there kicking up a storm, with all the greats 🇮🇪💔🇮🇪
My aunt was with Luke when they were younger godbless her.
True story from a dub 🙏🏻🇮🇪🙏🏻
Can not beleive you found that song, its my favourite Ireland forever
Luke was a iconic artist & he's voice is beautifully rare. Not at all biased being related..
love listening to your relaxed insightful reactions. you're always the coolest person in the room when I'm listening to your reactions. keep up the good work. Great song listening to it all my life.
Luke sings this song well in billions of ways, and also it is getting a message across.
the town i loved so well by the same writter and the same singer my friend . this and the song here might be the 2 of greatest songs in irish music EVER .
Raglan Road is a must, preferably the live version with Al O Donnell , for me anyway.
The blast from the past😂
I'll never forget Luke Kelly singing the night visiting song on the late late show, my mother was crying as he was seriously ill at the time and it was his last performance a legend he was
Thankyou Kelly has that unique sound and nobody can sing a song like an Irishman
Stunning, compelling, evocative..............running out of ways to describe this beautiful song
Phil Coulter who wrote this song is a good family friend. This is my dads favourite song and he remembers knowing Phils son. Amazing song and amazing writing from Phil as per usual. And of course amazing performance from the legendary Luke Kelly.
Your honesty is beautiful ✌️❤️🇮🇪
Your reaction is beautiful for this song😊
I remember when Luke died, my mammy cried and cried. Both gone now RIP ❤
Such a pleasure to hear the appreciation for our Irish artists thanks 🙏
Such a hard song to listen too. It brings me to tears every time I hear it. My beautiful baby girl will never be able to live a normal life, totally removed from the world around her. It was always a sad song to me
But now it it so hard hitting.
