    That finger flick pinch harmonic is a really neat trick! I'll have to try that...

    • @rbdrbd
      @rbdrbd 6 лет назад

      I think it's actually a natural harmonic and quite popular with EVH. Just tap 12 frets above the fretted note, doesn't even need to have the string ringing before you do it.

      Check out Tommy Emmanuel doing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". Cascading harmonics, I've heard it called.

    • @DeathProof132
      @DeathProof132 4 года назад +1

      Old comment I know, but I actually found an alternate way of playing pinch harmonic parts that's similar to this since I could never quite get the "proper" technique down smoothly for whatever reason...instead of hitting the harmonic after picking with the finger tip like shown I gently touch the string with the backside of my 3rd finger and the result is a very clean harmonic squeal that can be seamlessly integrated into your riff without any careful precision or change in hand position.

    In the nearly 20 years I've been playing guitar, I've never managed to do pinch harmonics with my thumb, "the way they should be done". I've developed (by accident) a technique to do them with my index finger, probably a bit differently from what you're explaining in the video. I hold the pick regularly and strike the strings normally, just that every now and then I extend/bend my index finger foward a bit and push the nail (not flesh) against the string. It's not an additional move that I have to decidedly perform after picking, it's just become part of my picking process, sorta like the pick pushes the string down, and then the string hits the nail on its way up. Like that, I can get really loud and intense squeals on every fret, even first frets, really high frets and empty strings. Different frets and different strings will require different striking positions, so sometimes it takes a bit of "looking for the sweet spot". If I continuously bend the index finger back and forth while playing, so that the nail hits the string at variable intensity, I can even create flanging or wah (-ish) effects. Any speed, any string, any fret. Pretty cool stuff. Too bad I'm not an interesting RUclipsr who could make a video of it... :)

    Hi, new subscriber. I think it's great to see a metal player who also picks backwards. it's something I've been doing for quite a while now and to me its about how it sounds. I think the jazz guitarist Sheryl Baily also picks this way. no lettuce!!! only beer!!! anyway, peace!!!!

    Great FAQ! About the noise interference, also where your guitar is directed counts, if you record with the guitar facing your monitors or amp, the pickups of your guitar can pick up (heh) noise from the power amps and make a high pitched noise in your recording. Try turning around to see if where your guitar is directed affects the noise level. It also happens with fluorescent lighting, like neons and stuff like that. If you do have this kind of lighting where you are recording, try turning it off :)

    Hey Ola, thanks for all the great videos and content! I've been wondering these days , since I'm working on a new album (sorry if it has been answered in a previous video): how do you create a tone that will sound good in a mix and cut through? I'm aware of the "crank the high mids" rule and all, but it's notorious that isolated stems of great tones on records can sound like shit, so how can I know that my shitty tones will sound great after the mix and mastering?

    Hi Ola ! Did you have some "so f***ing messed up moments" in your career, as a musician ?
    It is quite my mood actually : "fuck it, I will never gonna make it, 'should probably sell all my gear, etc"
    I can't, because music is a part of me. But I am still stuck with this feeling
    Do you have any advice about that, to go beyond the demotivation ?
    By the way, thanks for the good vibe. Discovered you with the video of Neverlasting (on the DAR FBM100), you blowed my mind, and still do. Seeing you meeting Steve Vai or Guthrie after all these years following you, made me... proud of you, if that's a thing !
    Thanks a lot Ola !

    even the furman power bar cleans up some dirty power signal.. its expensive but built like a tank, the power conditioner... That thing is ACE for removing computer drive sounds, and dirtypower Hum... also make damn sure you are using balanced cable ( all the same type ) for monitors and make sure they are shielded... even "shielded " sterio cables Are not fully shielded, you need TS ( mono ) Cables for a monitor just as you need TS cables for your guitar, unless it has active pickups, then the cable that goes from guitar to interface shoud be a TRS cable ( tip ring sleve ) this is a proper sterio cable...

    Hi Ola, as you know, Poland is a beautiful country with many amp/guitar brands, not only HESU, Mayones, Skervesen or BlacKat. Did you ever try MG or BASH Amps, Merlin or Hathor pickups?
