I can relate. My family is always telling me do this and that. And take care of this. Check on that. Why aren't these bills paid... no kid needs to learn about rent and bills in middle school or how to balance a checkbook. I had to do everything. Translating, calling places looking things up. Even after I married and my younger sister lives with my parents my parents don't trust her at all to do things. They keep mounting everything on me. I decided to move out of state and it helped a bit but still have alot of baggage to carry with my parents. It's alot. This song hit me right in the feels.

I felt this for my grandma. She's the oldest and if it isn't her siblings it's her kids or her grandkids. She holds everyone on her shoulders and I can see as she ages how much of a toll it really takes its the first time in my life I've seen her slip and break and let others handle stuff themselves because she simply can't anymore. She's the gentlest yet strongest women I've ever known in my life and I hope she knows I'm here in the background picking up peices she dosnt have the energy to anymore and that I've got her back forever

  • @jas17p

The line "I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service" hits hard. The whole song being the effect of putting so many expectations on the "strong" member of the family are too real. I am not the oldest sibling; however I'm seen as the more responsible one and have bailed my siblings out (sometimes literally) more than I can count, while at the same time juggling work and school. I have so many expectations from my family that I've had panic attacks and hid away lying I had a headache and needed to be alone. Sure my family says they are proud, but when I have accomplished something for me it either doesn't matter or something else comes up. If I'm not the one to keep the balancing act together who will? If I break would any of them be there for me? Honestly, I don't know the answer to that.
On a less serious note this movie is amazing

The music from Encanto really does hit different. I can't recall the last time a Disney movie made music that made me want to dance (Family Madrigal), feel intense (We Don't Talk About Bruno), relate to a character (What Else Can I Do?) or just cry (All of You).
Under the Surface while not fully relatable to me, is still something that hits me, not as a sister, but as a daughter. The expectations people have from you, that your family has from you, and not wanting to seem like you're incapable of doing those things. Even when those expectations aren't forced upon you anymore or you're given a break at last, the pressure doesn't let up that easily.
And saying that, I think you should listen to What Else Can I Do? when you listen to another Encanto song, because we go from the middle child singing about the pressure she's under as the strongest person, not only in her family, but in the entire town, to the oldest singing about how she's made something new and unexpected, but it's still beautiful, and most importantly, HERS. And it leads to not only her wondering what else she can do, but her and the youngest of the three sisters (Mirabel) getting closer. She's breaking out of the expectation of perfection that has been assigned to her and it's honestly an amazing song.
And after that, All of You just ties everything together, with the youngest finally seeing herself. All of herself. And the family learning that, they're more than just their gift and that there is a town full of people ready and willing to help them.

the “give it to your sister, your sisters stronger see if she can hang on a little longer. Who am i if I can’t carry it all?” always makes me cry. As an older sibling, I’m always given the “heavy” things, it always pushes me to an edge but then again, who can I be if I cant carry it? It’s too much of a heavy burden for my little siblings to carry. I can always relate to this song since Luisa is always trying to make people think she’s this strong confident young lady when she’s just hiding that she’s tired and scared if she is the strong confident one. I’m always trying my best to be perfect for my parents and younger siblings. I feel worthless when I can’t be perfect to them. When I can’t do everything they ask me to do.

  • @Makithehybrid
    @Makithehybrid 2 года назад +106

Something I realized recently about this song is that the beat is very inspiring and uplifting but the lyrics itself are a desperate cry for help. It works brilliantly to mask Luisa’s (the character singing it) stress and pain, something that she has more than grown accustomed to doing for the sake of her family. It still has subtle moments of her true pain coming out, but it still makes the audience not fully process or even recognize her true feelings under the motivating music.

  • @MagicalAnimecat

I like how the chorus changes slightly each time with "give it to your sister" but my favorite is the last one "give it to your sister and never wonder, if the same pressure would have pulled you under". They expect her to be able to carry everything, and don't even think about whether or not they would be able to handle the same thing.
Also, spoilers kinda? But at the end of the song Mirabel hugs her cuz she had no idea her sister felt that way, and tells her she's carrying way too much.

DUDE same, I've been my moms "therapist" since I was little, it took so long to tell her how much I've been traumatized by having to hear all her problems, and sometimes LIE to make her feel better from such a young age. Yes parents can show emotions, but I dont think it's good to have mental breakdowns in front of your daughter and expect her to be wise enough to pick you up at such a young age (this is why when people say "you're so mature for your age" it makes me uncomfortable 😭if only they knew WHY) this song hit me hard. I'm the middle child, but I'm the most responsible and I'm always looked at to be the one keeping it together and keeping the peace between everyone, my parents were harsher on me than they were to my older sister, saying they wanted me to turn out better. It sucked and I got so depressed. Only recently have I been able to focus on myself, but before I really felt like I had to hide my feelings and worries, so I could be the backbone for my siblings and mom. Sorry for ranting, this song nust really hits home for me, and it sounds amazing

Honestly all the songs in this movie make you feel (way too much) and they're catchy (I blame Lin-Manuel Miranda). The biggest songs that you have yet to react to are "Waiting on a Miracle", "What Else Can I Do?" and "All of You"(performed in that order (minus the songs you already reacted to). In my personal opinion that is the order you should react to them in (mostly because the ending song "all of you" is just that much more impactful after you got the chance to know all the characters).

I keep imagining it in my head lasting a few seconds longer with an ascending brass section while the note is held out. IDK , but I want to learn how to make that on my own. This song is gorgeous!

God this song really speaks to me. Lines like "Every family burden" hit home as I have sort of become the mediator in my family. And not even just in my family. I have helped friends out of horrible situations and even had to talk one off the edge. And on the one hand I am incredibly thankful that I can say they are all ok and I am holding everyone together, I understand this feeling of pressure and expectations. A friend recently called me the emotional rock of our friend group. Saying that if things seem rough, I am always right there. And that really just left me with the question of if I am that that rock, who am I supposed to go to when everything is too much? That feeling just builds, and you don't feel like you can ask for help because at this point its not just your reputation or self esteem that would take a hit. Its the idea of someone reliable that people around you need which is damaged. Your afraid that if they see you as less, you won't be able to help. But if you don't get help, then it will all come crashing down anyways.

I was so hoping you noticed the breaths at the start of the song. In the scene itself there's sound effects that help to hide and mask it from Mirabel (and by extension the audience), but you can still pick them up when you listen closely and it's easier to see in just the audio by itself. It's one of my favorite little details in the song that are like an early showing of all the cracks that have been forming over time.
I'm definitely more of the 'Mirabel' in my family with the massively gifted older and younger members while my older sibling is a lot like Louisa where they were always expected to just handle me and everything else...

I'm not the oldest - actually, I'm the youngest.
But even still, I relate heavily to this. None of us ever took the pressure for each other, I think. We always handled our own pressure.
Only... being so empathetic as a family, means that we all felt really burdened. We shared a bit of each other's pressure, just as much as we endured it. My brothers moved out immediately after graduation high school, making that stability against pressure seriously falter. My sister, the oldest, ignored that pressure in favor of hedonistically dumping it on my mother and myself - she's over a decade older than me and still lives in the same household as my mother.
And that is suffocating, sometimes. Staying behind to support my mother emotionally, or to help out around her house, and seeing my sister just... lounge around, complaining yet rarely helping.
    It gets on my nerves.

I relate to what you said lol, not really the situation (i gotta stop to says how awesome you are for doing that. And I’m sorry your sister leaves that all to you)
Anyways- I meant to say that I relate but to being the youngest child, not the situation:
“Give it to your sister and never wonder, if the same pressure would’ve pulled you under.” Has to be my favourite lyric from the song. Bc even though I’m the youngest sibling, I was basically forced to keep a horrible secret to myself for 10 years of my life. And this lyric (for the past few months that I’ve known it) always makes me wonder how the other members of my family would’ve coped if they had to deal with that same thing. Idk it makes me feel strong but also weak depending on when I’m listening to the song somehow lol
(Strong in that I think I dealt with it pretty well considering what it was (and morbidly laughing at the idea of my family members crumbling under the weight of it). But also feeling weak thinking about the very real possibility that I actually handled it really poorly and that my other family members wouldn’t still be hung up over it/would’ve coped better??)
(Adding to that thought it makes me wanna see it happen to my dad bc he literally forgave the person who “wronged” me a week after I told him 💀) lmao anyways
Once again sorry you have to deal with that, and I hope it gets better for you! ^^ sending you love :)

I'm the older sister, and heavily relate. My little sister means the world to me, and I try to take all the things that could hurt her on. From a being the peacekeeper between her and a very unstable family member, to hiding my own depression and sorrow. I'm the older one, and had to be the more emotionally stronger to keep her safe and happy. I don't want her to know how much pressure I'm under, because sometimes I does feel like im in that circus. I don't want to fight cerberus, but to keep that family member from causing problems I did. She doesn't need to know the extent of bullying I went through. As long as she's happy and safe, that's all I ask for. I'm the older sister. It's my job to protect my little sister against what I can of the world.

I haven't even seen this movie yet, but I've fallen in love with this song, because like so many others, I relate to it so hard. What makes that more ironic is that I'm not only not the oldest of my siblings, like most of the others here are, but I'm actually the youngest of 3. But when you have an oldest sister who decides very early on that every authority figure in existence is the enemy, so she acts out in every worst way imaginable, nearly tearing the rest of the family apart in the process; and then your older brother, having seen how the oldests' actions hurt those he loved, develops a bit of a short temper towards her, and anyone outside the immediate family, his own way of protecting his loved ones the only way he knew how; you end up growing up while watching essentially a guide of exactly what not to do. You absorb all the conflict you saw, and in order to avoid causing anyone else any more suffering, you subconsciously decide to always do the opposite: you stay quiet, and you always behave, almost to a fault. So you end up becoming "the good child", "the mature one" etc., and between that and my
stellar grades, those labels became so ingrained in my own self-image, that I ended up having practically no real "teenage years" experiences to speak of, since I was unconciously avoiding anything & everything that could pull me away from my "Goody-Two-Shoes"/"Golden Child" identity. Now, I'm an insanely burnt out & late dx neurodivergent 21 yr old, & I can barely bring myself to tell my parents anything about my life regularly bc, even if I know they don't actually think so, I just always feel like I fell short of, idk, what I was capable of, or what I should've been, ig.

Yes, as the eldest of to special kids (one being autistic and the other physically disabled both since birth) you have to be really strong for your parents. Because of the age gap that we have (nine years, phew!), I do most of the chores that my mom can't do because of work [which is the cooking, some of the cleaning, washing the dishes (which I hate doing, but still do because my mom is scary-) , and when she has to go out of the house, I'm the one who has to babysit. Most of the time, I stay up when one of my siblings decide to stay up (theyre still babies) so that my mom can get more sleep, All of this on top of school work.].
When I get out of the house and go to school for my voice tutorial, is one of the only times I actually relax, even if it is just for a few hours.
My family don't understand how stressful it is, sometimes... I just want to scream from how frustrated I am, cry on how hard it is about how my autistic temperamenal sister is so frustrating... But... I don't. Because I am afraid of their reaction. Will they be angry? Disappointed?
Thanks... I really needed to vent.

I'm so sorry, that sounds really stressful, in the meantime, always try and frame your current state as well as possible, e.g. you're learning amazing life skills that many other people may not through this. But if you feel that your schoolwork is being affected, could you enquire about whether another family member, (dad, aunts/uncles/grandparents etc.) would be in a position to help too? Of course you know your family situation and whether that would be appropriate but I hope you get to enjoy your childhood too.

And in my opinion, they further add to the feeling of overwhelming and the seemingly unending drip of pressure and expectations that Luisa's constantly having to carry, especially being one of Mirabel's older sisters. Although, I am so happy that even without the visuals, you can still feel so much of that tension and pressure and weight that Luisa feels that she has to carry. He really needs to see the animation for this song it adds so much to the track because you can actually see how she feels.

As an only child for several years, this hits so close to home. Sure taking things for siblings is hard and no fun (I've done that too), but when you are the only child and you carry the pressure of being the only one to be able to make your parents proud, it weighs down so much more. There isn't anyone you can run and hide behind. You have no where to bail yourself if something goes wrong. You just have to keep taking on more and more. As I got older, I was told that I couldn't do certain things because I had to watch my younger siblings. From there, it just expanded. This song hits so close to home and I am so glad to hear that I am not the only one who can relate

5:17 I love how when we are waiting for things to explode, everything is just concealed, like you juste CAN'T do so, to explose later, like '' I'm keeping it in because I have too '' and we it does exploded, it's like the DREEP that was too much and made the vase just fall

Unsure if I should keep posting this, but here it is anyway x3 "Falling fast" from little miss perfect the musical, it's a back and forth between the singer's of "little miss perfect" and "ordinary" and you're going to LOVE it! The creator is Joriah Kwamé

Not only is this song gorgeous, but the message it’s sending is also very well delivered, I wish the animated video was out because the visuals are great too

I'm glad you pointed out her sighs, those first 50 seconds just got me. I already knew how tired she was, and I feel like it just gave more space for you to feel for her. I love it, those subtle details 😌

I was always the strong protective older sister but when my dad died unexpectedly a few years ago I became even more so the family rock. I picked myself up and never let myself fall apart or at least thats how I felt. I was always standing strong and taking on the weight of everything going on around me as my mom and sister healed. Because of that however I felt like I have internal cracks that are so deep they may never heal...

What else can I do is DEFINITELY the next you must react to, after that is Waiting for a Miracle
Both songs are amazing but I feel as though if you did Luisa you should do Isabella’s nexy

David, you should react to the Encanto song “All Of You”, it’s such a touching song. Definitely one of my favorite songs from the movie.

This entire song is the one that hit me the hardest while watching this movie. Just seeing someone trying to take everyone's burden onto herself visualized so perfectly hit me like a train.

Bro the animation makes everything even cooler like when she says “who am I if I can’t run with the ball” you see her shouldering a GIGANTIC GLOBE and everything is just freaking amazing the symbolism is really good

The song itself is so amazing. But I am a bit disappointed you couldn’t watch the video with the full animation because the animation is so so phenomenal. Not only in this song but the whole movie.

First time I've ever related so much to a female Disney character.
I lost my mother at 14 and being the eldest sibling, had to be the strong one and shoulder the pressure. So this just cut deep!

Even though I am the youngest between my sister and I, I strongly relate to Luisa. When I was very young I witnessed the fight that broke apart my parents marriage, my sister was away at camp. That night my mom told me I was the glue that's supposed to keep the family together. I spent my childhood taking care of my mothers emotional needs and I spent my time cleaning up after her (she pushed her dishes towards me when she finished her meals, he would rip apart her filing cabinet and leave me to reorganize the files, she would talk to me about her martial issues with my dad) I spent years making my father stand at the top of the stairs to wait to kiss my mother goodbye before he left for work every day but my mom stopped coming to get a kiss. She told me my dad said to her that he didn't love me as much as my sister. My mother didn't treat my sister very well at all and she ended up moving out around 16 I was happy for her when she left she spent years being treated badly for seemingly no reason. When my parents finally got a divorce I'd never felt to relieved and broken and at the same time. I was relieved they could finally work towards being happy on their own, but I was shook to my core to realize I couldn't do what I was supposed to do. I couldn't hold my family together. It still breaks my heart to this day. This song always makes me shed a tear.

I have always been taking care of everyone in my family emotionally and a few years ago I broke hard and there was no one to catch me or pick up the pieces. I lost a lot of family relationships but if someone is gonna blame you for folding under pressure, they may not have had your best interests at heart in the first place. Im much more relaxed when im not around those people who keep demanding without giving

David, what I love about watching you is that you are one of a very small number of people I’ve found who really seem to have a relationship with music like I do. I’m no musician by any means, but music effects things in me that the people around me just don’t understand - but you get it. You engage with music, on a technical level yes, but just as importantly on a very personal, emotional level. And the sheer giddiness you get from a good piece of music… it’s just so nice seeing someone feel as deeply as I do about music.
Keep being a light to people, man.

Here I am still waiting for you to do a reaction to Paint it Black by Sebastian Böhm. 🥺
Edit: Okay, just saw Encanto and now I see this song is indeed within the movie. I was wrong.
