Fun fact: The writer of this song (Rebecca sugar) actually was inspired to make Spinel after finding her old bunny stuffed toy in her garden years later after she forgot to get it. Spinel's designs were inspired from her stuffed toy.
She also said: "It's shocking how much the stuffed toy had changed after abandoning it for years".
She found her stuffed toy upside down, so that's probably where she got the idea of turning spinel's heart gem upside down to show people how much she has changed after all of these years of waiting for someone that won't come back.

Now, you are right about the abandonment stuff, but the biggest thing you are missing is what makes this even more heart wrenching. Spinel is gem, which means she is made, not born. She was literally made to be Pink’s best friend/playmate/toy. Then Pink just... left her. It’s not just abandonment, it’s the feeling of failure.

The sad thing is it was in Stevens perspective that then we heard from Spinels. We never got the perspective that Pink had and the show just kinda blamed her for everything. Maybe if countries weren’t so homophobic then we wouldn’t hate Pink as much...
EDIT: It seems as people misunderstand the last sentence as I’m talking about countries like Russia completely stopping their payement towards Steven Universe. And since Steven Universes budget is primarily using the money other countries give them to air it in their own country, the ending was rushed and we never got a season 6 that could’ve done a lot more justice for all the characters. This isn’t something everybody knows so this is a little Steven Universe fun fact for you, and sorry for the misunderstanding.

Other Friends really drives home that Sarah Stiles (Spinel's VA) is a Broadway performer by trade. The nuances in her vocal work in this and that song are so good.
Disobedient is also a really good song and the beat is great I think he would like the song.

Something to understand, in regards to Spinel’s, the heart gem, transformation. Gems as a species can only change their forms if they are “poofed” attacked to hard from an outside force, Which is essentially the equivalent of temporary death. and getting shattered is the equivalent of being destroyed. And permanent death.
Spinel transformed after receiving the shock of her life, that the being she was essentially created for didn’t care about her and abandoned her. And that is when we learned that gems can poof themselves, in this case, Spinel committed successful suicide from sheer shock and heartbreak
and when she reformed she became something sad, angry, bitter and full of hate.
Not really a suicide as much as it is an enormous emotional shock to her system. We see a similar situation with Pink’s old Pearl, where her trauma and refusal to accept the past had a toll on her physical form, even if her gem was perfectly intact. Spinel literally had the person she was made to serve and entertain abandon her, leaving her with nothing. And finding out that not only did she get left, but also Pink genuinely didn’t care about her and made new friends on Earth and forgot all about her loyal Spinel in the garden truly broke Spinel to her core. Her gem is a heart, and Pink all but shattered it emotionally. So she reformed into something with a new purpose of revenge and trying to hurt Pink the way she had hurt her.
@Nevaeh Woods Been rewatching Future lately, so some stuff sticks out a bit more. Honestly, it's one of those things where the show itself cares about these characters. I adore Spinel's design, it really shows her break. She has actually tear streaks on her face in her new form. The specifics of the upside-down heart symbolism are probably for someone smarter than me to pick apart. Like...it makes you want to cry. And the song is just so defeated.
When you rewatch the earlier seasons you also notice that all 3 of the crystal gems were in their retro outfits in the last scene where they were holding a heavily pregnant rose but the first time we see them with newborn Steven they’re in their forms from the first episode

It's not just that they share a writer, it's that they are of similar subject matter because they were both inspired by the same real event in her childhood (losing a favorite stuffed toy in a garden for a long time), which she has spoken about.

Man this song is a masterpiece, the 6/8 swing rhythm, the brushes on the snare, the mallet percussion and bass, it’s not just tragic, it’s bittersweet.

So far she has a 100% track record for fitting in a song about this rabbit on shows she composes for.

So let me explain if you didn’t know :3 Disclaimer! Spoiler alert
The two gems in the beginning were Pink Diamond the taller one with poofy hair, and spinel the one with the heart gem. Pink Diamond wanted a colony which is a planet she can control on her own, but the other Diamonds did not let her have her own planet and when the time she was finally given colony the time she went to go to the colony but Spinel didn’t want to leave her so she left Spinel there and lied about a game where Spinel had to stay in the garden.
Spinel waited for years for until Pink came back but she never returned, and she was slowly getting tired of waiting but she still did. That was until a message came from l around the universe(?) and Steven made a message that everything was alright every mistake was finished and he as the new Pink Diamond(Steven) will help as much as he can.
Spinel then realized that she was forgotten, abandoned, replaced by Pink and she was sangry (idk)
And boom wow that was the longest comment I have ever wrote. I’m sorry if I am being a major spoiler 🤭 I just couldn’t help myself. A person in the comment section kinda made a point when they said it’s not all about Pink so I made a few edits.

Well the message send out wasn't specifically about pink diamond, it was that the damage the diamonds had done was addressed. Spinel went haywire because she realised that Pink had abandoned her, replaced her and completely forgot about her to the point that Pink had died.
Outside of that, this song shows Pink reach a certain point in her life where she wants to be taken seriously. Spinel was, for all intents and purposes a toy. Pink's issue with Spinel wasn't the clinginess, it was the childishness. Many of us eventually get to a point where we consider ourselves to be too old for our childish toys.

Another thing that I love about this song is how the pitch is fairly monotone and low, almost droning, converting musically how this experience being abandoned by the only person she cared for has left her completely drained and dead inside. My God the music in the movie and this show is superb.

As someone who has gone through being abandoned, I feel as though the song basically punching you in the gut is done on purpose to reflect what it feels like to be abandoned. You always think that everything's fine, and them bam! They leave you behind it.

Actually yeah, you learn so much about how The crystal gems in the beginning reflected how Pink's Homeworld life was like. And his beginning of understanding towards Pink before he realized that she was not a good person before coming to Earth.

I would suggest "Let's think about love" from Steven Universe, if you have the time to listen to it.
And the waltz rhythm suggests a very flowery tone which reflects her innocence at the time and her heavy relationship with Pink Diamond

The fact this song hit just as hard for some one who doesn't have the context from the rest of movie is really impressive.

I know this is late, but did you notice how at "finally something. Finally news" it starts beautiful, cheerful beats, yet once it gets to "and all of her brand new friends" it stops. She got some hope/joy at the start of the beat, then when she learned there was no hope it dropped the cheerful beat

An old video I decide to comment on. But fun fact: every character in steven universe has their own instrument and those instruments fuse with the fusion. Garnets is base or electric keatar, amethyst is drums, and their fusion is a combination of the two. Spinels instruments is a synthesizer and drums, giving her that sinister yet bouncy feel

I’d recommend the song “Ellie and Carl’s married life” from “Up”. It’s an instrumental, and that scene is notorious for making everyone who watches it cry, and I’d love to hear your take on it.
You should definitely react to "Other Friends" from this movie but you should also react to "Something Entirely New". The latter song is connected to Garnet who sang "Stronger Than You" and some of the main melody is even included towards the end. The song focuses on the origins of Garnet's 'birth' in which Ruby and Sapphire met and bonded, slowly falling in love until they developed a relationship with enough trust and compassion to bond and fuse into Garnet who is a different person yet still a mix of the two. It's truly beautiful and represents same-sex relationships in kid shows perfectly.
