I think Matt said it metaphorically, they are kids as in like experiences, as in how they react to the world, they are still dicovering unknown things...
"Queer young officers from the army of an eugenistic expansionist state meet each other in the field Fall in love, betray their fascist home to live as refugees in the primitive land they were supposed to conquer Eventually they lead the guerrilla faction that will fight the same fascists they once came from" This could've been the sinopses of the HARDEST A24 film to ever be released But it's from a show that aired on cartoon network
Fusion is an inherently queer concept. It is neither this nor that but all. It is sexual and platonic, romantic and familiar and entirely a reflection of the relationship of the people involved. If the relationship is romantic, the fusion will be an embodiment of that. Ruby and Sapphire are not children, they are two grown people in love and this is why the song sounds so evocative of sexual themes. Especially with regards to the feelings of many queer people when they discover themselves for the first time and are unsure whether a pursuit of this love is worth the stigma or shame one might experience.
Yea. But it also works well with non queer people who just fall in love for the first time. So it can kinda be shortend down to just adults in general falling in love for the first time.
Interesting little fact: Right after the reveal of rose quartz, actually being pink diamond. (something that the fandom basically guessed at all the way in season 1, but the show creators told them that they were wrong.) The next couple of episodes were about Ruby and sapphire getting married. This was considered “problematic” in other countries because they didn’t want gay relationships portrayed on television. And had even banned a couple episodes of Steven universe previously because of those very depictions. Those countries even went so far as when they got voice actors for the characters they made a point of picking a man to do the voice of Ruby, because they figured they could more easily pass her off as male. In response, the show creators decided to basically see just how far other countries would take this by having several episodes about a lesbian wedding. (They even went so far as to make sure that Ruby was the one in the dress) That very episode was a key piece of the narrative to. Because blue and yellow diamond show up to destroy the crystal gems and they only stop because Steven was able to tell them that he was essentially pink diamond now. The response of those countries against LGBTQ content? They banned all the episodes in the arc, leaving a lot of the audience in those countries scratching their heads over the fact that suddenly blue and yellow diamond are on earth and they’re calling Steven pink diamond.
You can say all you want about how Steven Universe has aged poorly or whatever. But we all have to agree that they really knew how to tell homophobes to shove it up.
To clear up the Garnet thing: Ruby and Sapphire are genuinely in a forest, not in a 'fusion dimension'. Ruby says "and now your here forever" because fusion is extremely illegal and they had to run away together. We are unsure what happens during fusion. Another point- fusion can be intimate, but it doesnt have to be. Fusion means loves, but any form of love- Garnets is likely both intimate and romantic love, but Steven fuses with his dad platonically. Hope this helped! ❤
To clarify, fusions were allowed but most only for fighting on battle and JUST with two gems of the same type and class. Ruby is a lower class of gem, Sapphire is a RARE gem and an court gem, very important since they predict the future, Ruby are supposed to be just their guards and not even speak with them, the fact they fused even by accident was scandalous and unforgivable, Blue Diamond would shatter them for it, that's why they ran away
16:56 So the thing about Rose/Pink was that she was a the youngest diamond (pretty much one of the 4 leaders of their species) and unlike the other three she hadn't gotten her own planents yet until she eventually got to conquer earth for herself. Then she discovered that killing earth was not good thing and kinda sucked and tried to shut it down but the other diamonds didn't listen so she made a new identity for herself (Rose) and fought against the invasion that way. they eventually won but at the cost of a lot of lives. She never told anyone she used to be the one who conquered earth to begin with except for pearl. She also did a lot of bad things in her past and the Diamonds as a whole are just a prime example of a toxic family as well be eventually she grew into a good person in the end. Eventually pearl reveals this to everyone and they all get conflicting feelings about her.
@@Spekor Fr, she made Steven’s entire existence a moral quandary. She had a child because she knew she couldn’t change herself and humans could. The problem with that is that SO many people depended on her to be there for them. Steven grew up without a Solid mother figure(he had to fix the gems’ emotional pain so it took a bit before they were got GOOD at being parents, I’m not saying they were BAD just not experienced). Spinel ended up totally losing her only friend because of Steven’s existence, the diamonds became hollow, and so much more. Steven has to LIVE with that burden thanks to his mom.
The "now we're here forever" is just about them being stuck on Earth for the first time. It is talking about their first fusion, just the whole thing's a flashback.
It was always more then JUST a kids show. And I'm not ashamed, its songs have made me cry more than once. It hit deep and honestly helped me see what unhealthy relationships look like and how we all grow. As human beings.
This is hilarious to me, because three of the Diamonds are... literal Broadway stars. But we also don't hear them very often, so that's still kinda fair.
12:00 As someone with DID who has experienced fusion and the rare splitting apart that comes from a bad fusion your brain… you don’t… your not you when you fuse… it’s this person who feels connected to you but more like your their parent… but also you share their memories… you get to see things in a new light… in a new way. Your new and you look at the two people who made you and it’s like instead of having any biological upbringing it’s all social upbringing. You are raised in a minute on the memorys of those before you. But you aren’t inclined to behave one way or another… you are the child of their experiences and that’s all your biology doesn’t come into play… but when you unfuse… when you return to you… you both share those memories… you both know what happened… and you are innately closer because of it… your still you… but your perspective on the world can never be closed off again… part of you still feels bound to that person. Like you are still a singular. Once you have fused that bond… that connection… even if it breaks… even if the fusion was unstable… you know each other in a way that is so intrinsic that it takes great hardship to sever that bond. It’s something that is like a soul bind in other media… and when you sever (unfuse) you still feel connected. Bound.
Seeing Mathew trying to figure out Familiar is really fun because every new conclusion that he got to I was like “No but actually yes.” Like everything that you said was correct, it was just missing a crucial detail that is the biggest spoiler in the entire show XD
Fusion is an incredibly intimate thing to gems, it's like the pinnacle of trust and an allegory for relationships in general whether it be paternal, romantic, or platonic. Gems don't have physical forms like people, as much as they are a rock with a projected body of hard light, fusion between two gems is a melding of that light to make a new being that is a mix of both of them. (Steven is a sticky subject because he also has like physical mass from being half human and presumably hard light mixed in from being half gem so he can fuse with both) As for Rose... She was the leader of the gem rebellion for Earth, a planet where the diamond authority (the leaders of the society the gems come from) planned to make a colony that would eventually destroy all organic life. The problem is (and spoilers for the shkw obviously) Rose is the rebellious alias of Pink Diamond, the diamond who specifically was in charge of the colonization of the earth. She decided after it started that she no longer wanted to do it but for a variety of reasons she herself didn't feel able to just stop the colonization, instead faking her death in hopes of scaring the diamonds away from the planet and hopefully ending the war that had started in the meantime. This instead corrupted a lot of gems (making them not conscious enough to keep their forms from anything but monsteorus forms without speech) and the war also resulted in countless shattered gems on both sides. This among other upsetting things occur from the rebellion to Steven's birth, but regardless yeah Let's Think About Love really does feel like a "hey we could think about and process everything new we've learned and everything we could have done differently before now but how about instead we look forward and at least for just today let's think only about the love between two loved ones as they get married" I love Steven universe it's such a good show about emotions and grief, even with a character who has mental health and emotional issues up to the finale, the movie, and the sequel spin off series
So, the thing with Steven’s mom: She was Pink Diamond, a member of the ruling class of the gems. She was kind of the little sister of the ruling quartet of Diamonds alongside White, Blue and Yellow; the others all had “colonies”, planets they had taken over and harvested the resources from. After Pink Diamond threw a tantrum about wanting to be taken more seriously she was given her first colony: Earth While overseeing the colonization of Earth, she realized that what they were doing was wrong: in taking the planet’s resources they left it hollow, destroying the natural life there. She tried to back out of the colonization but her sisters wouldn’t let her, thinking that she had just underestimated the work load and was being childish again. Pink realized that the other diamonds didn’t take her protests seriously and also that other gems treated Diamonds vastly differently; she created the persona of Rose Quartz, a quartz soldier, to more freely move about on Earth among other gems, eventually starting a revolutionary movement. The only being who knew that Pink Diamond and Rose Quartz were one and the same was Pearl, who was working for Pink Diamond and had helped her come up with the alter ego (also working for is a bit misleading, as Pink owned Pearl). Pink made Pearl swear never to tell anyone the truth and then faked her own death, likely under the false belief that with no Diamond to rule over it that the planet would be free. Instead the other three diamonds attacked the planet, turning nearly every Gem on it into the monsters we see the Crystal Gems fighting and sealing away in the early part of the series; the only ones to be unscathed were Rose, Pearl, and Garnet who took shelter from the blast under Rose’s shield. We learn later that the three remaining diamonds didn’t know about the corruption and had been under the impression that the blast they’d used had destroyed the Earth Gems completely, which is why they pulled their forces back: they hadn’t been beaten by the rebellion, they thought they’d won. Rose Quartz lived with Pearl, Garnet, and later Amethyst for thousands of years on Earth, never revealing her origin to the later two, preferring the life she built over the one she’d been made for. Eventually she met Greg Universe and with him created Steven, ending her own existence in the process-a conscious choice on her part. She may have believed that Earth was completely safe from the Diamonds at that point; she may have had some knowledge of the potential for them to return. Like the characters, we the audience aren’t given a clear answer. Steven’s mother is a very interesting and complicated character with many flaws and a lot of mystery still; we never see her for herself, not really, only as other people perceived her with the possible exception of a few fragmented dream segments. Idk where I’m going with this, except to give some kind of context for all of the thoughts Steven and the others are dealing with during “Let’s Only Think About Love”, which takes place shortly after it’s revealed to Garnet, Amethyst and the others that arose Quartz was not entirely who they had believed her to be.
Me watching the thumbnail with Steven in the wedding suit: "NOO THAT SONG HAS SO MANY SPOILERS 😭😭😭😭" then I remembered he spoiled himself a lot already
Ruby and Sapphire can separate from being Garnet willingly whenever they choose to, but it can also be forced to happen if they disagree about something too much, or if something happens to Garnet that causes them to revert to their gem form.
"Wait, is this them inside Garnet?" That would be REALLY cool but no, this is them when they first accidentally fell onto Earth and now they have no way to return to Homeworld
in The Answer (the second song) that was the first time Ruby and Sapphire ever fused. It's important context that in gem society fusion of two different gems is basically unknown, the only times gems ever fuse is with other gems of the same type, and Rubies are common foot soldiers whereas Sapphires are used for predicting the future and are quite rare. So Ruby has fused plenty of times but only with other Rubies whereas Sapphire has never fused full stop. Regarding what gems experience when they fuse it's dealt with a fair amount in the series. Basically they are greater than the sum of their parts, they're still in there but they're kind of components in someone new. EDIT: Also, they aren't kids, they're hundreds of years old.
The song Familiar is about Steven realizing that the position he's in now feels familiar. And as he's now mistaken for being his mother because he has her gem, he's realizing his mother, who has made some poor decisions, was just like him. She would want the attention of her family, but unlike the Crystal Gems did for Steven, they never dropped everything to spend time with her, or stopped to listen to her. This song is Steven realizing the hurdles he jumped through are identical to the ones his mother went through, and relevant to his current situation.
The "fusion dimension" is actually not shown in that song, but is shown in the song "Here Comes a Thought". Ruby and Sapphire on Earth a few thousand years in the past.
Yay! I HIGHLY recommend finishing the show. Hopefully not too much has been spoiled for you already through the songs. Either way, happy to see SU again! ❤️❤
Ruby would have been shattered (executed) for fusing with Sapphire. (Sapphire would have been forgiven since she's practically nobility). Instead, Sapphire chose to grab Ruby and run for it, essentially leaving the two of them in exile.
I was already super excited to see you revisit Steven Universe because that's how I found your channel but I was so pleasantly surprised that you actually remembered as much as you did. When you named Amethyst and even Spinel (ly) it was like woahhhhh, after 4 years, still, proud to be here to witness this XD
Heres a little fun fact: the reason sapphire, who usually wears a dress, is in a tux and ruby, who usually is dressed very masculine, is in a dress in the wedding episode is because in russia ruby is voiced by a man and this was done to show that garnet is in fact a queer relationship. To make it impossible for russia to not air the episode they made it extremely relevant to the plotline.
First song: Amethyst was hit by spinel's (the heart shaped gem) scythe, it resets the gem back to what they were made to do, Steven is trying to get her memories back, like a puzzle piece, for her to turn back to herself. And yes, Spinel was bad, Steven sliced her with her own scythe. Second song: Steven went to the diamonds, they put him in her room because at the ball he danced with Connie and fused in front of everyone. The platform he was laying on adjust to the person or gems size. The pebble people are a result of his moms healing powers, and they helped her in her room. AND his mom, Rose Quartz ( Pink Diamond) isn't dead in order for Steven to be brought into the world she had to become Steven, but he is himself not his mother. I just realized he was in his room before the ball, my bad. Third song: They're not kids, even though they're small thy are around thousands of years old. Like pearl said she had been a criminal for over 6,000 years. They exist together as Garnet. They are as one gem, even though they are two separate gems. They can separate at will and when they have afflicting emotions. Fourth song: She was playing two roles at once Pink Diamond and Rose Quartz. She lead an army against the Diamonds and made Pedal shapeshift into Rose Quartz. Rose turned back into Pink. Pink made a real pink diamond with dirt and a pink flower. Rose and Pearl then got into position and Pearl had to literally stab Rose. When Pearl stabbed Rose, Rose broke the diamond in her hand, making it look like she shattered. This is to my knowledge as a Steven Universe fan. I have watched this since I was probably 10 or 11. I have watched a lot of reactions to this amazing show. I hope I informed you correctly. By the way I love your reactions to their music. Edit: By looking at the comments they also have good information.
If you listen to garnets song "made of love" she says "I am their fury I am their patience I am a conversation" they are both in there speaking together and garnet is what is produced from their conversation.
It would be really cool to see you react to the full story, even if it's just through watching all the songs in order, or maybe a recap, cuz there's a lot that happens that I think would be interesting to talk about.
Plot of the movie was basically just all the crystal gems forgot who they were(they were reverted back to how the were before the crystal gems came to be) and Steven was trying to get their memories back.
to answer the garnet question. a key part of fusion, is "to be of one mind". they need to focus on one thing, and as long as that's what they are focusing on, they remain fused. they split apart when they disagree. Garnet just doesn't disagree (too often), which is why she has stayed fused for so long.
Matt I NEED you to react to Phil Collin's live performance of "In the air tonight" If you havent yet. Everyone I know is so impressed by his performance and its just so INTENSE
Tysm for taking my reccomendations! I loved the reaction For some explanations In Something Entirely New, it was a flashback of when they were first getting to know each other. Where they are from (Home world), fusing between gems is highly looked down upon, and fusing in general is looked down upon if the fusion isnt doing anything useful with their combined size and strength. Its most likely a metaphor for interracial couples or same sex couples. Thats why they are so shocked abt it, like "and you hadn't before?" "Of course not! When would i have ever?" Fusion is a type of metaphor for any kind of relationship, whether its familial, platonic, toxic, and in their case its romantic. As described in the show by garnet: Sapphire and ruby might aswell be names for her left arm and her right. My guess is that If the fusion is unstable, it does seem more like two people trapped in one entity and able to talk to each other, and if the fusion is too unstable, like if they just cant work with each other, then they would unfuse. Although yes, they can unfuse at will. For some explanation abt steven's mom (this definitely has HUGE spoilers in she show so read at your own risk): Pink diamond was neglected by the other 3 diamonds. They made her feel like she wasn't important even though she was basically one of the 4 diamonds, who basically were conquering the galaxy. Pink diamond only had one colony that they were invading all to herself, earth. Although she started to realize how much life was on earth and she started to appreciate it. She disguised herself as a Rose Quartz to go down and see more of the earth. Eventually she tried to convince the other diamonds to stop the colonization, but they just told her to finish what she started. So, Rose Quartz started a rebellion and basically fought against her own armies along with the other diamond's armies, while convincing others to join said rebellion (others such as garnet, after they were cast out for fusing.) Later on, she and Pearl decided to fake Pink diamond's death so that she can live on perminantly as rose quartz. And Pink Diamond's last order to Pearl before becoming rose quartz was "we will never speak of this again." Pearl was physically unable to tell anyone about it for over 5000 years. Then 5000 years later she met steven's dad and they fell in love. They had steven, but because gems cannot exist without their gems, when steven was born, he had Rose's gem so rose kinda just stopped existing outside of her gem. And in the movie, yes, Amethyst had lost her memories. Spinel also lost her memories of ever being mad at them which was why she was so happy and going along with them.
I feel like you’d enjoy the songs from Dead End Paranormal Park. You’d really like songs like, Somewhere down there, My Frankenstein, and Just some guy
Hello Matthew, I think it would be really cool if you reacted to some more songs from Steven universe; more specifically there are some songs from the movie and the spinoff that you haven't reacted to yet that I'd love to see.
You need to listen to more Steven Universe songs, i recommend these that you didnt heard yet: Escapism Disobedient Independent Together True Kinda Love Haven't you noticed that im a star Mr Greg What can i do for you I could never be I think i need a little change The Working Dead Sadie Killer and the Suspects Ruby Rider Let us adore you Happily Ever After Who We Are Found Being Human
Okay. ⚠️Spoiler warning⚠️ For “Something Entirely New” this is Ruby and Sapphire’s first time on earth. They had no way to het back to Homeworld, the planet they came from, and were stuck on this foreign planet. This was them experiencing Earth for the first time and reflecting on fusion. What you saw in the end was them fusing back together for the second time. And yes, they can split at will. For “Let’s Only Think About Love” Steven’s mum, Rose Quarts, was actually a part of the gem hierarchy that is the Diamonds. Rose Quarts was actually Pink Diamond in disguise, which refers to the line, “and the form she chose.” Everyone had just found out about the leader of The Crystal Gems was the very person they were defending Earth from so this song actually is them leaving processing that for another time so they can focus on Garnet (Ruby and Sapphire’s) wedding
Steven universe if my comfort show. Everything I get overwhelmed or start spiraling it helps ground me. Would highly recommend finishing the show, even in your downtime. The later seasons really get good with story telling.
This video came out two days before my dog died and when my dog died the song familiar was stuck in my head as I was grieving and now the song dispute it being more then a month since she died the song still reminds me my dog so thank you Mathew for giving a song to remind me of my dog (The dog in my profile picture is the dog I am talking about)
idk if someone's explained this already, but Fusion is (as someone already mentioned) meant to represent relationships in all forms, Garnet is inherently a romantic relationship, meanwhile Steven's fusions represent the friendship he has with the other Gems (and then Steg is the familiar relationship with his father) however, Fusion requires a level of emotional sync between its participants, however any instability in that sync will result in either a Fusion failing outright, or falling apart, like when Garnet splits into Ruby and Sapphire at a motel due to conflicting feelings about something intense (I think it might've been the "mutant" shard gems in the Kindergarten (which is where the Gems get made)) Malachite is even an example of an unhealthy/toxic relationship, as Jasper initially forced Lapis into it to get an edge over the Crystal Gems, but then Lapis used the Fusion against Jasper, saying "now you're *my* prisoner". and this is probably the closest we've seen to a "fusion dimension", probably because this one was forcefully held together by Lapis; even after they unfused, Jasper came back and *begged* Lapis to come back and fuse
Hey! I’ve been watching your content for about a year now and I love your take on music and certain animated cartoons. I would love to pitch a suggestion of a cartoon to react to, if not the show then at least the music. There was a show that flew under the radar for most people called Centaur World. A lot of people were put off by the overly silly nature of the cartoon to make it through 2 episodes of the show. The show is absolutely amazing but more so is the musical pieces. Very reminiscent of Disney or higher level orchestrated cartoon movie scores. I have the sound track on most of my playlists and despite the show’s silly nature, it touches some darker areas and sadder topics, similar to Adventure Time. Doubt my comment will be read, but I know it’s something I’d extremely love to see you react to and I believe the how deserves more attention/love. It’s on Netflix and was produced by someone who worked on a Death metal comedy cartoon called Metalocalypse. This is their first time making any show and their writing went really under radar. Anyways, if you do read this, thank you very much and I understand if it doesn’t get read.
Honestly idk if the gems have brains , if its possible to get pregnant , who knows what else they have. Also both rubby and sapphire need to be in sync and on the same rhythm to fuse (any gem does) if ine of them fall out of that rhythm. They split , sometimes then can do it if they just want to
14:45 I do love how looking back we really shouldn’t have been surprised about SUF considering the whole song is just “let’s shove everything away and be happy, just shove, shovey shove shove shove”
Contexto for the songs from the movie: Spinnel used a wepon that reseted every gem back to their base programing as if they had just beikg born, destroying their memorys and character development and trought the movie Steven tries to restore them and manages to do so in music montages in which they simulate the important experiences they had in the past. Spinnel also hot reset by the weapon and she isn't evil.
YES STEVEN UNIVERSE OH MY GOD YES ‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️:DD Edit: I haven’t watched the full video yet but i can tell your confused basically what happened was spinal(? The pink one) has a Weapon that when you get hit with it it resets the gems so they don’t remember anything. With the second song he got trapped by white, blue and yellow diamond because he’s like half pink diamond
When I was like 15 years old I was just listening to the S.U. songs and my English was very bad so I only understood some words but I still loved the songs. Now hearing those songs again as I can understand every single word, it's like listening to them for the first time 🥹
The funny thing about familiar is that when you don't know the plot, or only know about the first seasons it seems like they're talking about metaphors but everything is very literal lol, like "everyone wants me to be mom" to a normal person it would sound like a songy way of saying living up to his mom's legacy but the diamonds want him to literally turn into his mom LMAO
If you want to know about Garnet, there is an episode called 'The Answer' I feel like you could enjoy to learn a little more about her and what happened with Ruby and Sapphire. Is very cute!
Context for "Familiar": The other Diamonds found out that Steven is Pink's son and brought him back to Homeworld in an attempt to replace her with him. He recognizes a lot of behaviors from his own family and comes up with an idea to try and "start the Diamonds' redemption arc", for lack of a better term. His main goals with them: get them to stop seeing him as Pink 2.0 and get White Diamond to come back to Earth with him so that she can help him heal all the corrupted Gems.
Mathew, could you kindly watch a full Steven Universe show with us, like you did with Ever After High?🥺 SU is soooo good and it would be so fun to re-watch it with you🤧💕 there are lots of interesting things in the plot!!
what a lovely thing to revisit
You actually need to watch the series and movie, its so weird to see how much questions you have to the songs and everything, its not bad just weird because you react to movies and everything and just for someone who saw it whole its so mind blowing to see that.

Steven Universe is DEFINITLY a show where you need context of the episodes to truly understand and feel these songs.
I really like how you worded this!! Thanks for sharing your thoughts :D
OH. MY. FUCKING. GOD.
THIS IS LITERALLY THE BEST EXPLANATION OF FUSION I HAVE EVER SEEN!! THANK YOU FOR THIS!
I don't see how any of this explains how fusion is inherently queer.

Interesting little fact:
Right after the reveal of rose quartz, actually being pink diamond.
(something that the fandom basically guessed at all the way in season 1, but the show creators told them that they were wrong.)
The next couple of episodes were about Ruby and sapphire getting married.
(They even went so far as to make sure that Ruby was the one in the dress)
That very episode was a key piece of the narrative to.

To clear up the Garnet thing:
Ruby and Sapphire are genuinely in a forest, not in a 'fusion dimension'.

Eventually pearl reveals this to everyone and they all get conflicting feelings about her.
though to be truthful the things she did as rose even tward the end before she gave up herself to birth steven.. she was still kinda the worst
Ruby and Sapphire aren't kids, they're just small. That's just what Ruby's actual voice actress sounds like 😭
It was always more then JUST a kids show. And I'm not ashamed, its songs have made me cry more than once. It hit deep and honestly helped me see what unhealthy relationships look like and how we all grow. As human beings.
"I love how real they sound, like no Broadway singers"
THIS IS SO REAL. It gives so much like authenticity to it and idk their voices are so beautiful
This is hilarious to me, because three of the Diamonds are... literal Broadway stars. But we also don't hear them very often, so that's still kinda fair.

Context of no matter what is basically amethyst had amnesia
Bound.
More Steven universe?! Love to see it!
The SU movie is an amnesia story. The end of no matter what was when amethyst got her memory back.
(Steven is a sticky subject because he also has like physical mass from being half human and presumably hard light mixed in from being half gem so he can fuse with both)
As for Rose...
This among other upsetting things occur from the rebellion to Steven's birth, but regardless yeah Let's Think About Love really does feel like a "hey we could think about and process everything new we've learned and everything we could have done differently before now but how about instead we look forward and at least for just today let's think only about the love between two loved ones as they get married"
I love Steven universe it's such a good show about emotions and grief, even with a character who has mental health and emotional issues up to the finale, the movie, and the sequel spin off series
Sapphire and Ruby on earth in their song. Ruby says theyre here forever because they were banished for being a mixed fusion.
So, the thing with Steven’s mom:
She was Pink Diamond, a member of the ruling class of the gems. She was kind of the little sister of the ruling quartet of Diamonds alongside White, Blue and Yellow; the others all had “colonies”, planets they had taken over and harvested the resources from. After Pink Diamond threw a tantrum about wanting to be taken more seriously she was given her first colony: Earth
While overseeing the colonization of Earth, she realized that what they were doing was wrong: in taking the planet’s resources they left it hollow, destroying the natural life there.
Me watching the thumbnail with Steven in the wedding suit: "NOO THAT SONG HAS SO MANY SPOILERS 😭😭😭😭"
then I remembered he spoiled himself a lot already
Steven Universe music is always a gem to listen to
Praise the sheen! Oh praise the sheen!
Eternally shiny and chrome!
Ruby and Sapphire can separate from being Garnet willingly whenever they choose to, but it can also be forced to happen if they disagree about something too much, or if something happens to Garnet that causes them to revert to their gem form.
Steven's voice actor Zach Collison has an album that is absolutely amazing. You should totally check it out.
"Wait, is this them inside Garnet?"
That would be REALLY cool but no, this is them when they first accidentally fell onto Earth and now they have no way to return to Homeworld
in The Answer (the second song) that was the first time Ruby and Sapphire ever fused.
Some context
The first song, ‘No Matter What’ is in the Steven Universe movie and Amethyst was…reset we’ll just say. Yes her memories were reset
Man I love all of these Steven Universe songs

Steven Universe songs will never not make me so happy when I listen to them. Truly a treasure for me to experience such amazing music as a kid.

Oh my god?? That’s so random it’s been so long I’m so happy lol!!
I haven’t thought about these songs in so long! Honestly such great songs 🥲
It would be really cool to see you react to the full story, even if it's just through watching all the songs in order, or maybe a recap, cuz there's a lot that happens that I think would be interesting to talk about.
In the first song Amethyst was memory wiped (her gem factory reset) and Steven was trying to make her remember their relationship.
Plot of the movie was basically just all the crystal gems forgot who they were(they were reverted back to how the were before the crystal gems came to be) and Steven was trying to get their memories back.
Zach Callison (Steven's va) is an amazing singer that has his own original album. I recommend it!
MORE STEVEN UNIVERSE!!! THANKS GOD! THANKS UNIVERSE! THANKS MATHEW!
Not Matthew spoiling himself into oblivion 😭😭😭
YESS MORE STEVEN
steven universe is one of my favorite shows It’s so incredible for so many reasons I could infodump for hours
to answer the garnet question.
a key part of fusion, is "to be of one mind". they need to focus on one thing, and as long as that's what they are focusing on, they remain fused. they split apart when they disagree. Garnet just doesn't disagree (too often), which is why she has stayed fused for so long.
YES! I *JUST* rewatched the entire series about a week ago, it’s great to see you listen to these again!!
starting the video… STEVEN UNIVERSE FOR LIFE BRO
Matt I NEED you to react to Phil Collin's live performance of "In the air tonight" If you havent yet. Everyone I know is so impressed by his performance and its just so INTENSE
Tysm for taking my reccomendations! I loved the reaction
For some explanations
In Something Entirely New, it was a flashback of when they were first getting to know each other. When would i have ever?"
Fusion is a type of metaphor for any kind of relationship, whether its familial, platonic, toxic, and in their case its romantic.
For some explanation abt steven's mom (this definitely has HUGE spoilers in she show so read at your own risk):
Pink diamond was neglected by the other 3 diamonds.
OMGG i was not expecting this
Mat getting spoiled on Steven Universe hardly matters, since by the time he watches it he won’t remember.

For “Something Entirely New” this is Ruby and Sapphire’s first time on earth.
Rose Quarts was actually Pink Diamond in disguise, which refers to the line, “and the form she chose.” Everyone had just found out about the leader of The Crystal Gems was the very person they were defending Earth from so this song actually is them leaving processing that for another time so they can focus on Garnet (Ruby and Sapphire’s) wedding
is this a sign to watch steven universe?
Steven universe if my comfort show. Everything I get overwhelmed or start spiraling it helps ground me. Would highly recommend finishing the show, even in your downtime. The later seasons really get good with story telling.
This video came out two days before my dog died and when my dog died the song familiar was stuck in my head as I was grieving and now the song dispute it being more then a month since she died the song still reminds me my dog so thank you Mathew for giving a song to remind me of my dog

She did not fought an army invading earth well she did but she literally fought HERSELF, she n her family were the ones invading JAJAJAJA
su breaks you into a million pieces then take the best pieces and remakes you into your best self
Hell yea Steven universe!
idk if someone's explained this already, but
Fusion is (as someone already mentioned) meant to represent relationships in all forms, Garnet is inherently a romantic relationship, meanwhile Steven's fusions represent the friendship he has with the other Gems (and then Steg is the familiar relationship with his father)
however, Fusion requires a level of emotional sync between its participants, however any instability in that sync will result in either a Fusion failing outright, or falling apart, like when Garnet splits into Ruby and Sapphire at a motel due to conflicting feelings about something intense (I think it might've been the "mutant" shard gems in the Kindergarten (which is where the Gems get made))
Malachite is even an example of an unhealthy/toxic relationship, as Jasper initially forced Lapis into it to get an edge over the Crystal Gems, but then Lapis used the Fusion against Jasper, saying "now you're *my* prisoner". and this is probably the closest we've seen to a "fusion dimension", probably because this one was forcefully held together by Lapis; even after they unfused, Jasper came back and *begged* Lapis to come back and fuse
Dam, was hoping you’d do more bangers, the songs you did go through were aight though
I'd really suggest you finish up the series. It gets very serious and deep. I think you'll really enjoy it
I'd be so here for it if he'd do that!
Holy shit Mat your steven universe videos is how I found you this is hilarious

Can you do a reaction to undertale fan songs they are super good and I believe you would love them
Honestly idk if the gems have brains , if its possible to get pregnant , who knows what else they have.
For more context just watch the show
YES STEVEN UNIVERSE OH MY GOD YES ‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️:DD
Edit: I haven’t watched the full video yet but i can tell your confused basically what happened was spinal(?
I love no matter what
If you want to know about Garnet, there is an episode called 'The Answer' I feel like you could enjoy to learn a little more about her and what happened with Ruby and Sapphire. Is very cute!
Please watch the show.
