Tracy wrote a perfect song, literally not a single note or word could be changed to make it better. What got me with this performance was her reaction to the crowd, it seemed like she was genuinely surprised that she is so beloved. I literally can't watch without bawling my eyes out.
She is Beloved. By many People. You could FEEL her Happiness and Surprise at the Audiences reaction to seeing Her. Because they are not just an Audience, they are FANS. Every one of them, it seemed to me.
Find someone who looks at you the way Luke looks at Tracy. This entire amazing performance you can tell how much he loves, appreciates, and respects her.
This is Luke's favorite song. He performed it in his concerts long before he put it on an album. He has so much love and respect for the song he doesn't change the gender words when he sings it.
The back story to this song is interesting. Tracy usually destroys ppl who use this song. She didn't with Luke, there is a level of respect both ways between them.
This is such an incredible performance. The look on Tracy’s face on that huge stage with massively successful artists singing HER song. As you point out, Luke so clearly soaking in every moment. This is a timeless song and a timeless performance. I think this one will be remembered for years to come. Great job, Jen. I love this one! ❤
Another great reaction Jen. ( as always ) This was an incredible performance & gave me goosebumps also. Just something from left field Jen… Amira’s new video just out “Down From His Glory”. This is a duet, compiled with Amira in Sth Africa & him in the USA. Would love your expertise reaction on this one. Cheers Graeme
In the lead up to this performance they showed a video of him and how he had a hit with this song, which seemed an unlikely thing for the country charts. In the video he described this had been one of his favorite songs since he was a kid, how he would sing along to it every time he heard it. I thought it was just going to be him performing it, there was no hint she was going to be on stage with him until, well there she was. Like him, most of us have sung along to songs we love. Imagine being able to do that with the actual artist. It would be surreal. So when he was mouthing the words even when it wasn’t his turn to sing it was so clear he was drinking in every moment of what was obviously an amazing experience for him. Someone else used the term "fanboy" which I think pretty much sums it up. It's kind of adorable how happy he is.
I've watched this performance at least a dozen times, and I've cried every time. The subject matter of the song combined with Tracy's long absence from the stage and Luke's admiration for Tracy and her brilliant music to create an emotionally loaded performance that gets me every time like it's the first. Thank you, Jen, for your beautiful reaction!
Great reaction!! How anyone wouldn't get the warm feels from this is beyond me! I've loved this song since it first came out in 1988 - Tracy's storytelling, simple guitar lines & beautiful voice always captivated me (as did the whole album). While I'm not a country fan, I admire and like Luke's version - and that it's breathed new life into a great 'old' song! This collab at the Grammy's was perfection! It was talked about prior how wonderful it would be for them both to sing it - they weren't wrong! Indeed, you can tell how star struck Luke is - his admiration and respect for the 'creator'. Kudos to him to let Tracy shine! He could've taken the spotlight as it's 'his' version that's current, but no, he took a back seat and perfectly complimented where needed. The arrangement was beautiful - as was Tracy! Cheers.
I'm subscribing because you did a very good job reaching to this video, you were very engaged with everything that was happening and very informative about everything you were thinking through out the video 👍👍👍
The best part of this whole incredible performance is that look of pure joy, especially early on, on Tracy's face...Brings tears....Also kudos to Luke for very intentionally taking a "back seat" in their Fast Car performance.
You could see how happy Luke was to be performing with this legend that made such an amazing and well loved song. And I’m sure he was pinching himself that the moment could even happen. As well as Tracy getting to perform her most famous song and its resurgence. Everyone in that audience was treated to something very special
What I love about this is that these two people could not be more different…but that is only what your eyes tell you. The reality is that nearly all of us are the same at our core…we just want to have a good life, make enough money to take care of our loved ones and live in a kinder world.
I have loved this song since it first came out. I was watching the Grammys and jumped up with excitement when I realized Tracy was playing the guitar! Luke loves this song. You can tell that he is honored that she is singing it with him on the Grammy stage.
He looks at her, saying, "Thank you for for writing this song"". She looks at him like, "thank you for doing it justice." The song is iconic, their reaction to one another.......priceless.
I love how this was supposed to be "his moment" at the Grammy's, but he made absolutely sure that the spotlight has always been on Tracey. When i first heard that he had done a cover of this song, i was super dubious since this song has meant so much to people, and he as a white straight man singing a song written and sung by a lesbian black woman. But when i saw an article about his absolute admires her, and he has taken steps like this one to not just include her, but make it "her moment" it's absolutely adorable and to be respected. When you used the term smitten, you were right on the money!
he tells the story of why he recorded this song. It was his favorite and he remembered his dad playing it when he was around 5. Said it had been his favorite song ever since. He was totally in awe of Tracy and you could totally see a dream coming true for him.
The story is Fast Car was Luke's favorite song as a kid, and he sang it routinely as a cover on tour... one way or another got convinced to release it to radio, and ended up smashing the country charts, and winning numerous awards, including one credited directly to Tracy Chapman at the CMA's. So then Luke gets invited to sing at the Grammys... and he's got an idea and takes a chance... contacts Tracy and says it would mean the world to him to sing Fast Car as a duet with her leading. Keep in mind, Tracy Chapman hasn't performed anywhere in nearly 2 decades, going completely out of the spotlight. Sure enough the Grammys roll around and the audience gets the surprise of their lives... which you just watched. As far as I can tell, it wasn't rehearsed, and nobody but Luke knew she'd be there. As you know... there's power in music... and my goodness you could feel this in your soul, and as if that wasn't enough to make you cry tears of joy, the story behind how this even came to be is just beautiful!!! Take care, my friend!
In another comment section of performance, someone said she flew in for a couple hours to practice it with him. He wanted her to arrange the duet the way she wanted. She also wanted the original musicians, so it seems this is made up of most of her original band.
This song gets me back to time when I was still a student and listened it a LOT! Nice to see new generation of listeners finding it (like my son). Thanks for yet another nice analysis. Btw why are there often small "cracking" sounds in your videos, are they on purpose or because of some technical issue?
That Was Beautiful! Here I am at Work on a Break watching this Reaction, In Tears. I've Always been Nostalgic with this Wonderful Song. It's a Classic that will Live on Forever Thanks to Tracy Chapman and Now Luke Combs for Making This Big Fan Cry All Over Again.
I was in middle school when (or maybe slightly after) the original came out. I recall specifically because there was a nationwide songwriting contest, which was going to be judged by Tracy Chapman. (I entered; I definitely did not win.)
So here’s a backstory to this song and why Luke is so into it and everything. Luke Combs said Tracy Chapman was one of his favorite artists and Fast Car was his favorite song ever, he said he and his parents listened to that song a million times, he loves it so much he call her to get her permission to sing the song and put it on his last album he made which he did and it sounds great, well when he was told he would be singing Fast Car with Tracy Champan he cried and was so nervous to mess it up while singing it with her!
Oh man, Tracy's Folk Music carried me through the 90s. So glad to see her getting some recognition. Luke Combs did well too. But please, everything is not about Taylor Swift, cameraman.
Why can’t you just play the entire video from beginning to end and then say you want to say. When you keep stoping a song to say your feedback, then you losing the feeling of a song. Arggggg
The camera went over to her, dude. She didn't beckon it over. There's a recording of the show from the back and you can see the cameraman turn and look at the crowd, see her and go over to her. She's just enjoying the song like we are, buddy.
You should really do the original. The story works so much better when it is all from one person. The duet kind of ruins the whole message. She has a soulful voice, and Luke sounds like an American Idol contestant in this. Tracy is so much more authentic and the duet kind of ruins the point of the song. And no harmonies? It's weird. Watch the original video.
You ruin it by talking too much. And it's not "Body too young to look like this" - It's "Body too young to look like his". You can't even get the lyric right!
Tracy wrote a perfect song, literally not a single note or word could be changed to make it better. What got me with this performance was her reaction to the crowd, it seemed like she was genuinely surprised that she is so beloved. I literally can't watch without bawling my eyes out.
So beautiful 😊
Thank you!!! I don't know how many tissues I've gone thru during this video. So nice to know I'm not alone!
I've looked at Tracy Chapman like that since I first heard Give Me One Reason in about 1994-ish. I feel the same way today.
He knows how great she is and is in awe!
You can just tell he was so excited and scared to be on the same stage as her. He has the ultimate respect for Tracy.
He s incredible too

So moving!! Loved it 😊 thank you!

crazy that he even got her to perform !
I watched the Grammys the night they aired & got teary when I saw her and the crowd’s reaction.
Chills still when watching the video.

So great. Thank you!
I have loved Tracy's music since I first heard her on the radio and then bought her first album the summer of 1988!
Great reaction!! How anyone wouldn't get the warm feels from this is beyond me! i don’t think she would’ve come back for anyone else tbh

Classic song, great R&A, makes me want to dig my Tracy Chapam CD out and have a listen 😊
Thank you!!
I have loved this song since it first came out. I was watching the Grammys and jumped up with excitement when I realized Tracy was playing the guitar! Luke loves this song. You can tell that he is honored that she is singing it with him on the Grammy stage.
This performance moves me so much! It really is the respect and admiration! I’m literally in tears.
My friend Larry Campbell laying violin on this. Quite a surprise to see.
Playing
He played on the Tracy’s original recording if I recall correctly.
He looks at her, saying, "Thank you for for writing this song"". She looks at him like, "thank you for doing it justice." The song is iconic, their reaction to one another.......priceless.

In no universe would this ever have been his moment. The moment she agreed to it, it was her moment.
Thank you for covering this. One of the BEST performances at the Grammy Awards ever. Great coverage Jen!!
he tells the story of why he recorded this song. It was his favorite and he remembered his dad playing it when he was around 5. Said it had been his favorite song ever since. He was totally in awe of Tracy and you could totally see a dream coming true for him.
i think this performance was a bit of a dream come true for luke.

i just love to clean sound of that acustic guitar. I also love both versions of this song in particular even if its a sad song.
Watching his childhood dream come true. Amazing performance. She’s a treasure. He honored her well.
Its definitely interesting the difference between their 2 styles, Luke brings his country twang to the table
also love that you can see that Luke Combs is fanboying out here
This song gets me back to time when I was still a student and listened it a LOT! Nice to see new generation of listeners finding it (like my son). Thanks for yet another nice analysis. This was one of the first songs I learned to play on guitar 😊 I hadn't heard this performance before it's great

Tracy & Luke gave us a gift...Enjoy the GIFT!

I love their humility.

Enjoyed your comments and subscribed. Have loved Tracy since she came on the scene.
subscribed.
Fantastic reaction want to hear more of you...
Enjoying this - very lovely where it sits
This is such a beautiful song.
I love this though i didn't care for the country-ification that Combs add to it, but that reference for the song and the artist just shines through.
Hi Jennifer hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
you should check out Luke Combs "where the wild things are"
Great review

Interesting bringing up Cyrus. She and Chapman have similar adrygonous voices.
Please watch her interview with rosie O'Donnell about the Muppets it's precious
Ah Tracey. Youth sentiment
13:24 Translation: They stayed in their own damn lanes Lol!
LUKE WAS JUST A HUMBLE CHAP IN FRONT OF HIS SPONSOR.TRACY S THE ONE TO GET ALL THE HONOR BUT HE S CERTAINLY A GOOD ARTIST AS WELL
Can you do something from Leonid & Friends

Why can’t you just play the entire video from beginning to end and then say you want to say. When you keep stoping a song to say your feedback, then you losing the feeling of a song. Arggggg
Taylor Swift is trying to be the center of attention in that brief segment… she adds nothing
The camera went over to her, dude. She didn't beckon it over.
There's a recording of the show from the back and you can see the cameraman turn and look at the crowd, see her and go over to her.
She's just enjoying the song like we are, buddy.
6:42
She singing
His body's too young to look like his
not
His body's too young to look like this...
I know nothing about singing but i know that!!!
You should really do the original. The story works so much better when it is all from one person. The duet kind of ruins the whole message. Please stop talking and truly enjoy this perfect duet.
You ruin it by talking too much. And it's not "Body too young to look like this" - It's "Body too young to look like his". You can't even get the lyric right!
guy is superfluous ...
