Mismatch, a favorite bull friend whom we've been able to locate and document for 5 years now, FINALLY allowed us to witness and film his digging a rut pit. Amazing that we never observed this with him before, but he's always in the periphery due to his not wanting to fight, so a lot of this behavior with him goes on behind the scenes... It was a bit of an honor for us to film this integral part of the rut with him as we followed him during his morning walkabout. (Pity that no cows came running --not this time, anyway. But we have no doubt that he has success with the girls.) Enjoy this magnificent animal as he lets us in on his morning!

Amazing videos, especially the audio. I worked with captive moose in grad school, and have had numerous up-close encounters with them in the wild since moving to Alaska. Your videos are just like being there minus the smell.

@@MooseManNaturePhotos Pine Sol actually has a good smell, nice & clean. But in this case it's mixed with urine & testosterone.
@@MooseManNaturePhotos I live in Soldotna, and my master's thesis was on moose lactation. Part of my project included following human habituated captive/cow calf pairs around their paddock recording nursing activity. I got to experience all sorts of intimate moose interactions up close and personal. Although there are lots of beautiful videos of moose in Alaskan landscapes, your videos, with all the grunts, groans, and moans really transport
@@edreese2761 Thanks for the kind words, Ed, and wow, that must have been an enriching experience; cow/calf moments. That's one phase we really don't get to see much of. The occasional cow/calf in Maine/New England as the cows feed in the water in spring/summer. How cool for you!

Ótima pergunta! Isso é chamado de veludo. É assim que o osso do chifre cresce, fornecendo nutrição por meio de uma rede de vasos sanguíneos e nervosos. Quando o osso está totalmente formado (no final de agosto de cada ano), o veludo basicamente morre e o touro o arranca nos arbustos, o que é chamado de derramar seu veludo.
