- Calling Moose: A Moose's Perspective is a comprehensive moose calling video. This video is broken down into three sections: Moose vocalizations and sounds, moose behavior and scenarios that a person could mimic to increase their calling success.
In the first moose vocalization section I describe each call/moose vocalization a person might use to call moose, demonstrate the call and explain when moose use this vocalization and then I share video clips of moose using this call.
In the moose behavior section I share several video clips showing moose engaging in their normal behavior during the rut.
Finally, I share several scenarios where moose are interacting with each other. These examples would be good examples of a calling sequence that a caller may want to mimic to offer a real life calling scenario that may entice moose to come to a call.
The video clips in this video were all take from other videos I have published on RUclips. Below is a list of these videos.

@MrSka7cis Thank you for the kind words. When I planned this video, I wanted to add the moose themselves because I think that’s really where the authenticity is. A person can watch a videos of someone making any kind of noise and wonder if this is the actual sound the animals themselves make. Hearing and seeing the moose actually make the vocalizations is was I wanted to showcase because I think makes the most since. That said I appreciate the kind words and you taking the time to watch this video video.
Not a hunter but I just enjoy learning about animals. Moose are my favorite animal!

Thank you very much. In the videos that I have seen, I always thought I wanted to see more animals vocalizing rather people imitating animals. That made sense to me, but it’s harder to video animals.
Moose are my absolute favorite animals! Plus they do have kind of a meaning to me, since where I come from.

Awesome video, I like how you show the moose making the vocalization rather than just the human imitation.
Thank you. That is the exact reason that I chose to make this video. All the calling videos I’ve seen, whether it be for elk deer or moose, only have a person imitating what they say the vocalization should sound like. I’ve always wondered is that really what it sounds like and wanted to see the animal making the vocalization.

Moose are pretty amazing animals, but their calls are not nearly as regal as a bull elk in the rut: that will send chills down your spine.

I find moose calling to be a very difficult skill to learn. Having the moose call back and then keeping a conversation going is even more challenging.
I think moose learn from their experiences, so if you are in an area that has heavy human pressure the task becomes more difficult. Once moose respond and start coming in, I don’t do a lot of calling, I just let them come. Additionally, it has been my experience that if a bull is already with a cow he is far less likely to come to a call.

Yes, he is really something special. I have him in a couple other videos. I initially saw/filmed him two years ago. Last year he was bigger and he still on the upswing. I hope to see him again this year.

It's nice when you can fly and spot, then go stock a nice bull. Not everyone has that option.
@@nadewitt-yf6ng aircraft hunting is not really as easy as you would think… can’t carry as much weight, can’t hunt same day you fly, are pretty stuck hunting within a mile or less of your hunting spot. You can’t just land anywhere, and where you can land might not be thick in moose. The really only upside is that you can go further out where there’s less people pressure. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a blast, but it does take a lot more planning and logistics that road access hunting doesn’t require.
@@AkPacerPilot I hear you. The people that road hunt really are at a disadvantage like this past hunt now. Peterville Road was congested in the mornings and nights with road hunters. I'm aware of only two bulls taken, and f&g verified them both for me! You can get further out and that helps. You can also scout areas. Road hunters can't. With all the water, a four-wheeler didn't stand a chance. A 6x6 with tracks would have helped. The Argo, if you had 3-4 to go out together they got out and back in helping each other as tgey got stuck and high ended. There are no really good answers this year, except I saw a sherp that I didn't get to talk to the guy, but it seemed he did ok.
@@nadewitt-yf6ng where do you think we can usually land? Where the moose are, are typically next to swamp lands, rivers etc… all of my go to spots were under water. The only moose I saw and got in on, were ironically in the petersville area, all 4 bulls I got in close with, none were legal except 1 that would have been near impossible to get out due to its access. There wasn’t hardly anyone in the Dutch hills area and guess what I used to access that area? A 2 wheel drive 2003 Honda 4wheeler.
16B, 16A, and 14 moose population is significantly low this year. It’s why 16B is allowing same day hunt for 5 black bears, why wolf limits increased last year and this year. It’s why some of those areas dropped the resident locking tag requirement for brown bear… Between predators and the last 2 winters, the population is hurting bad this side of the range. My friends that flew out west of the range, or ones who road hunted went north, were the only ones I know who were successful in harvesting bulls. Do you know what it takes to do a hunt on the west side of the range? 15$ a gallon fuel at 10 gph once your west of the range. Imagine having to do 3 x 4 hr trips trips from the valley, just to get you and your stuff west of the range, lucky enough to drop a bull, now you’re looking at 6 more trips to get you, you’re camp, you’re meat back home. That’s every bit of 1300$ in fuel at a minimum. Using a bigger faster airplane like a 180, you can easily double that cost. Now let’s talk about the time and money it takes to get to a point where you have enough skill in a plane to go out there, find a new spot and not bend up an airplane doing such…. Then talk about aircraft insurance bring 6K a year… then the annual Maintenance on a plane that will run anywhere between 1000 and 12,000$… if you do back country off airport stuff, is kind of like riding a motorcycle, you will bend and break stuff, if it hasn’t happened to you yet, it will… it just takes one little mis-judgment to bend a prop and you’ll be spending anywhere from 12,000 to 30,000 to fix your 50k bush plane…
You can get a transporter to fly you out to an area for a lot less then any of that. So I don’t accept you’re argument that you don’t have the same opportunity…
Hunting is not the reason I have a plane, but I absolutely do my best to get every benefit I can out of it. This season sucked for south central, not just road hunters, not just private airplane hunters, local guides… it sucked for the vast majority of us. The grass was not any greener on the other side of the fence. I spent 18 days hunting moose this year, the only reason I’ve got moose meat, I Hauled my friends moose meat from McGrath because my friends plane got bent up.

Really great info! Coming from another Alaskan, that was absolutely some of the best calling instructions I’ve seen. I would add to your discussion on raking, it’s easy to rake too much or too aggressively when perusing an animal, you don’t want to sound like a big bull ready for a fight, you’re just trying to cover human sound! Have a talk with your hunting partner before hand about limiting human noise, you think that’d be general knowledge but apparently not, ask me how I know! Meat lost from the freezer that day! Excellent advice all in all and I really appreciate it, outstanding job!

@@danielsaulteaux3788 He is a pretty amazing bull. I’ve been watching him for three years and each year he’s gotten bigger. He’s actually still a few years from his mega prime. He shows up on some of my game camera videos as well as a couple other videos. The coolest video I got of him was this one: ruclips.net/video/HaLi_ui-S1k/видео.html
In this video, he is challenged by the dominant bull in the area, and It looks like they’re going to throw down. At the last minute he backs down. The cool thing about it is you can see by the look in his eyes and second he decides that was a bad idea.

We hunt interior Alaska...patience is key. We like to call using a long-distance broadcast cow call with a water routine about 100 yards away from our sitting location. Then sit and glass for at least 2 days...often a bull appears the next day after calling from the same area. We like a big lake downwind so a bull can not come in and scent the hunter from behind and calls carry a long distance across the lake.

I once had a cow call all night from12 to 5:30 am 20 yards from my tent. That morn a bear jumped on my tent at 5:00am. I copied her at 8:30am and in 3 mins a sat bull came in. 3 days before that a meteor hit somwere near by loadest 3 booms ever. I'll never forget 2017 sep 17 3:00am. The pressure waves made my 3 inch air mattres flatten and inflate rapidly in like 1 or 2 seconds only know 1 guy other than me that heard it. He said it almost took out his windows and he was 20 miles from me.
Holly smokes, that would certainly be a memorable trip.

That is absolutely reassuring. They are not generally very vocal in this time of year, so to get an answer back is awesome. Once the rut rolls around, you’ll have them charging through the brush coming out right in front of you looking for a fight. It is a rush.

Great video. I think you are mistaking the bull tending grunt though. That is the cow doing that because she isn't ready to mate.
When calling moose in they'll try to get down wind of you to smell you
Frequency yes, so try to set up where they have to expose themselves to get your wind.
When im deer hunting i pay attention to all animals. First the birds, then squirrels (they dont get along with deer🤔). If the squirrels start going crazy a deer is around. For me its a for sure thing.

Great video. Very Informative. The only thing missing, is tips on how to call cows...for those of us who didn't draw bull tags. Any suggestions?
I would stick with cow calls to attract cows. I’ve not had a cow come to bull grunts. That said, logically a calf call would also be interesting. I don’t think I have any video examples, but they are a higher pitched, short cow call. I will keep an eye out for video examples: our predation on calves is so high that I do not get a lot of calves on game cameras and I give cows with calves a lot of room.

I was testing out a new birchbark call in my backyard. A couple days later I noticed a bull track right in my backyard. He must have come in during tge night.

Ok, I’ve had this happen a few times. Do some cow calls, hear a bull coming in, circles me, zero wind, then 45 minutes later he rakes his antlers but won’t come out. I tried to rake but that didn’t work. Another time figured I’d keep sounding like a cow, but he still didn’t come out. How can I interpret that different. Was the bulls little ones and I sounded too big. Or he was a big fella and I didn’t sound like a cow well enough.
@@Dan-qt7kq Great questions: I think each animal is somewhat different depending on what they’ve learned from other encounters. It’s common that they circle downwind, so it’s nice to set up where when they do so they have to expose themselves. I think brush raking is an easy way to go. A long cow wine goes along way. It also depends on what part of the rut they’re in and if a bull already has cows. I think a guys is hard pressed to pull a good bull away from his cows: realistically, why should he leave his cows. It’s been my experience that the easiest bulls to pull in for the ones who were trolling for cows.
I'm really enjoying your videos. I'm up here in North Pole and plan on hunting early September. Would you recommend calling that early since the moose are not yet in rut? If so, what call would you recommend, cow or bull? I seem to find a lot of calling videos but they seem to always be during the rut.
Thank you. I doubt you would call a bull in that early: however, you might you use some calling tactics, on your way in to a sneak, to cover your human noises. Moose do vocalization to each other year around. That said, I have not seen the use of the bull grunt outside of the rut, so I’d stick to cow calls.

Thank you very much for the advice. I'll hold off on calling bulls. Next year I'm going to try muzzleloader so I can extend my season and get into the rut and do more calling.
Also, I was looking at getting a side by side this coming year for retrieving my moose but I'm not sure it will make it through to where we hunt but after watching some of your videos I think you sold me on an Argo. Very impressive what kind of terrain they can go through.

@@johnstodola1488 Thank you very much for the kind words. There’s pros and cons to every machine: An Argo will go just about anywhere, but they are not fast and require maintenance.
@@johnstodola1488an Argo is low to the ground and I am tired of going out in my 4 wheeler to retrieve them from being high ended all the time. I'd say if you have the money with my 39 years, a good 6x6 with tracks is your way to go.

We've been calling moose using mostly cow calls but we've had no luck drawing a bull out, we've been seeing a lot of calfs and cows, but no bulls.
Should we try a different call?
Raking and bull grunts do call in bulls. I like to think about a real life moose scenario where a bull is courting a cow.😍

Are there any bulls in the area? Sometimes not. If cows stay in an area, that is the reason. If a bull is in area cows even with calves, will go to the bull.

Thanks for that great video! How do you feel about the milk jug for raking brush?
I knew a guy who cut the bottom end off of a 1 quart oil jug and used it to mimic raking. It sounded pretty convincing.
Last year,
We had one pop up outta the brush after one rake of the bailing can, milk jug ,on the outboard jet cowling.
A boat paddle, plastic can,it'll work...if they are in earshot.
I cut bottom out of square milk jug from Walmart ans a stick about 2-3 feet long duck taped throw hole all tge way to the cut end of jug. It's tge most realistic other than using a scapula from previous years. The jug as it hits trees/brush hits tge stick for a racking and tge plastic doesn't get to out of control. It's awesome. Try it!

You are correct. I use the two words interchangeably when I’m talking, but that is technically incorrect. I should work to correct that vocabulary error in my posts and videos.
