  • I’d appreciate it if you took the time to read this post today. In many ways, these next three videos are a big part of this whole journey for me, please read on. Thanks! Good morning everyone and let’s start the day with some fun! This is Part 1 of Rick’s Top Five Bulls. There will be three parts. Part 2 will post next Wednesday and Part 3 is a week from today.
To begin, my Top Five is different from Libby’s, as it should be. In review…. Libby’s #5 was Shred, #4 Hook, #3 Mismatch, #2 is 22, and her #1 is Grumpy! Let’s kick off my top 5 with Mismatch at #5 and 22 at #4.
WAIT! MisMatch is #5? I’ll be the first to tell you, Mismatch...that amazing animal fascinates me as much as any of them, Libby said I couldn’t have five #1 so this is how it goes.
Come along with us and before we know it, Libby and I will be hiking again in Alaska. Before I started this Top 5 project, I sat down and thought about things deeply before I made my picks. As it turns out, all five of the picks are so loved by me and so close in ranking, they are almost all #1 choices. What the heck can I say? These animals are all warriors, and I am blessed to have studied them and learned their individual characteristics.
MisMatch might be the most amazing bull I’ve studied because of the cards he was dealt, his antler issues, skull injury, you name it, he battled thru it. And he still found a way to navigate the rut, and do some breeding. 22 is a legend to me. Two things that come to mind are his ability to fight long battles and come away without a broken tine, and secondly, his “friendship” with Mismatch was amazing to watch. It is my belief he was affected by Mismatch not showing up in the Spring of 2022.
As we head toward Spring 2023, we say thank you for all the support on our page and channel. Tune is Wednesday for choices #3 and #2.
Thanks for watching our channel, we are the husband/wife team of Rick and Libby Libbey, (Libby squared), New Hampshire wildlife photographers (and part time Alaska.) It is our passion to document wildlife of any kind, but moose are definitely at the top. In New Hampshire we spend a lot of our spring/summer hours in kayaks photographing loons and moose in the waters of New Hampshire. And hike many miles in Alaska seeking all manner of wildlife in the fall.

Wonderful pair of buddies. Moose therapy and Tea. Mismatch crying was heartbreaking. Poor mismatch. Grumpy is not to be messed with…that must be painful for him. Thank you for great commentary bring me into their world. Just exquisite interactions, gentle and pure. I am in awe of you and your work.

Thank you very much Barbara. Your comment touches us both deeply. Yes, Mismatch begging not to be hurt is indeed heartbreaking. We loved that bull. We are honored to share what these amazing wild animals have allowed us to learn from them. Thank you for being here to share it with!

It seems fitting that 22 and Mismatch are in the same video: still hanging out together. 😍 Well played.

Thanks, R. They should have been hanging out on the porch in their rockers. But sadly that's not the case.

I love it!! "Mismatch" and "22", buddies forever!!🙂 It's incredible how "22" is so gentle with him, knowing that he's not a fighter. The scene here with the moose bearing intelligence, is so surreal. This touches my heart, on how special these guys are. They are part of the clan, but their intelligence shows that they are still "Monarchs" of the wild. A full-grown moose like "22" seems always ready for anything. He's been around, and has taken on some hefty battles in past ruts. He's just a challenging bull!! When I notice "Mismatch" however, he's just a sweet, non-temperamental bull moose, hangs out with the other boys, and "little ones" too. I would wonder if "22", who seems to be so nice to him, rather knowing he doesn't fight, if he would lend "Mismatch" his cows to breed. He's never a fighting type but a real "people-pleaser", because he seems so gentle as a lamb, going about his "other" "bull moose" ways, other then taking part in that unforgiving rut. He takes after "Grumpy", and how he once was. That's what made "Grumpy" a true Superstar. I think "Mismatch" is one of those too. Looking forward to many of your wonderful videos. Thank you!!🙂🙂

Fantastic comments here, Dan. Thank you so much! We have to figure that 22 knew Mismatch's handicap here. Mismatch, in his day, was a beast, he fought like 22 did. I wonder if they didn't fight each other and that's how Mismatch lost his right antler. We just learned it happened to him twice! in 2016 as well as 2018. That was a deformed pedicle from either injury or birth, but the 2018 fight really damaged him, broke bones, blinded him in his right eye. So whether or not 22 had something to do with it we don't know but it was very apparent that afterwards? 22 was very -I'll go out on a limb and say this here- gentle and forgiving to Mismatch being found in his territory. One day we were filming 22 way up on the side of the mountain, bedded, and because he didn't get up and it was time to hike the long trek out, started down, leaving him bedded up there. Well at the bottom near the creek I saw Mismatch come wagging in. Wondered what for? (they generally don't wag at us) there didn't seem to be any other animals around and we had no idea he was there and were out in the open. Not ideal! But it was Mismatch, after all, so I stopped to film it and next thing I knew 22 had found his way down the mountain, through all the trees and krumholtz, and was wagging in from the other side of a clearing. They could not see each other yet. As SOON as 22 recognized it was Mismatch in his turf, he stopped and turned his back to him and bedded down. Of course Mismatch did likewise, they bedded near each other. I had to pick my jaw up off the ground! Goes to show us all that they are capable of respect and understanding of certain limitations. Just amazing stuff. I'd put that video here but it was just so shaky I really couldn't stabilize it. (Hand held, and it was windy.) But I still have the video clips of it all. Great lessons in the wilds. Always! Thanks for being here to share them with!

@@MooseManNaturePhotos You're welcome!! I get what you say however; and about the "hanging velvet" on "Mismatch's" top right pedicle. I wonder if these kind of intrusive pieces tend to itch, or bother him in any way while it's still hanging there. There is of course the ridicule moments that he has to go through to try "raking" any solitary bush to try to get it off. The history between "22" and "Mismatch" sounds really bizarre, but the interesting thing here as of late, is that "22", knowing about "Mismatch's" handicap, they both are now life-long buddies. Truly fascinating story this really is!! Thanks!!🙂🙂

@@Dan.d649 Always happy to share the stories that these animals teach us (because we spend so much time observing them, many photographers dash in, get their shots, upset the animals, and leave because they've sent the animals away.) As for the velvet hanging, you know it has to bother them if it is in their sight line. Mismatch is all but blind in the right eye so maybe it didn't bother him as much. However, it would tickle his face so...it had to go! We believe that the velvet, as the blood vessels and nerves die off, does itch to a degree, kicking off the raking phase. It's all just so interesting, isn't it? Thanks again, Dan!

You called it. They were best buddies and boy, was 22 lost this year without his old pal. We figured they'd be two old bulls hanging out in their rockers on the porch talking about the good old days. Sigh.
