- We bring you lots of moose videos here at Team MooseMan, and we put a lot of our passion into each one. But today’s video is special in more than one way. This is the best of the best, but from the VERY early parts of our adventures in Alaska. If you’ve been with us on this page/channel the whole time, great, sit back and enjoy! But if you just started following along the past few years, this is one you REALLY want to watch! Why? Because virtually all of this footage is from the first few years of our journey.
And right up front, we don’t mind admitting that our video skills were not the best back then. It was all new to us, our friend Michael from Wild & Exposed was mentoring us and we were soaking it up like a sponge. Even now, each year is still a learning experience and we love the challenge of that.
To all our friends here on this page/channel, we appreciate you, and we’re very excited to share this one. Here’s what really cool, most of these clips are from the very first encounters with these moose. To go a step further, all of the clips are from the first couple years. This is Part 1. Libby put captions in identifying the bulls to make it more fun for you. There will be a Part 2 which will include some bulls not included in this one. The quiz for you folks is…”Who will be in Part 2?”

Thanks for watching our channel, we are the husband/wife team of Rick and Libby Libbey, (Libby squared), New Hampshire wildlife photographers (and part time Alaska.) It is our passion to document wildlife of any kind, but moose are definitely at the top. In New Hampshire we spend a lot of our spring/summer hours in kayaks photographing loons and moose in the waters of New Hampshire. And hike many miles in Alaska seeking all manner of wildlife in the fall.

It's great to look back on some amazing moose footage. These look like mostly full-grown bulls during the rut. With all the "Grumpy" footage that you find, it never ceases to amaze me how special he really was. The little character that happened into "King James'" territory, was willing to "size up" with his bigger companion, and little did he know that "King James" was not all amused with his antics. That gave "King James" an opportunity to wander about, until he came across a "tripod" with a camera, well, the rest explains why he really couldn't figure this thing out. Lots of other nice moose footage, including the "Dancing Cows", that played the "seeking rights game" to hang around that bull for breeding privileges. Thank you again!!!!
Ha thanks, Dan. Glad you enjoyed this stroll down memory lane. We have learned so much from these animals since our journey started. And we learn more all the time. Can't wait for July in Maine for moose on the waters, and then the rut again in AK. Appreciate the comment as always, very insightful. Thanks for being here, Dan!
Amazing, you cannot imagine how big these animals are until you see one up close...and I've only seen them in New England.
Here in New England, our moose are the second largest subspecies.The biggest are in the Denali Range, in the interior of AK. The ones we film are very close in size to those monsters. And yes, they are massive! Thanks for the comment!

I LOVED having a wood stove too, Jo Jo! I miss it. Used to love splitting the wood by hand, harvesting it from the woods. The whole thing. But I must say, I'm really OK with the boiler heat and having the generator is a godsend! The minus 34º we never felt. Hope you fared well through it! Bundle up indoors, right? As for your having seen a cow give birth to twins? WOW!!! That's huge! I'd love to witness a birth. Closest thing I've come to that is horses. Which is way awesome. Glad you enjoyed this video. We had some fun with it for sure. Stay warm, and at least it's warming up again now!
At the end, I would wonder if "Swagger" concedes to "Mr. T", after wrongfully taking his "pit", and creating a "Dancing Cows" game for breeding rights. I would wonder if any of these crafty cows would later go back to "Mr. T". However, it did seem that "Swagger" at the end, did respectfully leave "Mr. T" with his pit, and found cows. Quite funny of an exchange, if you ask me. When the month of July comes, do have a great time in the state of Maine. I've been there like in Alaska, and I really enjoyed it a lot. I've never got to see really giant bull moose yet. Hopefully my time will come soon when I can take one of these trips. I never got to see any moose in Maine, but there are lots of them everywhere up there, just like in northern New Hampshire, and in northern Vermont. Take care!!
Thanks Dan. We hope to get on some good moose in Maine but getting on a decent bull is very hard to do. We're going to try like heck though! As for Mr T/Swagger? That was back when Swagger was young. Now? There's no way he'd back down to anyone. He's ruling that territory. What a difference a few short years makes!

While Grumpy is ever my favourite, I will forever be in awe of the majestic Hook, as well as the ultimate badass himself - King James.
Whenever either of those 3 glorious bustards make a showing in your vids, my heart skips a beat 🥰
Though I must admit, the more I watch, Swagger is steadily creeping his way into my heart as well 😊
Love it, IOA! Personally (Libby here), Grumpy is my fave just for the reasons I stated in my top 5 bulls video. But Hook was one of the first BIG bulls we knew, and his death hit us as hard back then as Grumpy's did this year. Hook had THE most amazing racks. And he was ever so gentle and tolerant. King James...omg. Short fuse. Ill tempered SOB but what a massive beast he was! And now lookout: Here comes Swagger. Another bull who never avoids a fight, who has matured now into such an imposing bull that it seems nobody wants a piece of him! Can't wait to see how it all shakes down this year! Thanks so much as always, so glad you found us!!
Great clips, but that opening match took the cake for me. That said, this series where grumpy gets his name was pretty awesome.
Thanks, R! The Grumpy naming bit? we were holding heavy DSLR's with big lenses out in front of our faces to watch on the LED screens. No tripods. No mirrorless. No way to view through the viewfinder. Wow, Dramamine! Sorry about that. But at least we got some of his moments when he was young and OH so wound up! That fight...we watched the wag in part but they went behind a hill and into a different clearing and were already hammer and tongs by the time we got filming. But wow, huh? King James v Pig Pen. KJ won. Or course!

Being new on this channel Grumpy was the first to really grab my attention but seeing King James really got my attention. Since I never seen much of King James over my short time I assume both he and Grumpy are in the same place.
By same place, you mean dead? Yes. Grumpy died in a freak fight accident with another bull (who also died) in September last year. But King James died a natural death. If you mean same place physically, King James held a territory that Grumpy would later take over after King James retired from the rut. We were able to document King James for 2 years. Grumpy for 6.

@@MooseManNaturePhotos check into Sun Country Airlines. They do a direct flight out of Minneapolis to Anchorage and it's fairly cheep.

We have been losing our moose here (winter ticks) but today Rick was up on a hike in the woods across from the house and spied moose tracks! That's huge here!! (He was checking for bobcat tracks. We hope to photograph more bobcats soon.) Anyway, I'm blathering.
