start practicing how to live the life whereever you live now.
    gardening, canning, freezing, dehydrating, fermenting.
Grow things, fruit trees in big pots. herbs in little pots, carrots in a deep bin.
chickens / bunnies can be raised in suburbia.Learn how to care for them, research what breeds are best for what you want. Build a small chicken tractor for 6 hens, pull it around your yard.
Learn to harvest those meats. find recipes, try them. Find out what you like & don't like.
Harvest eggs, ways to store your surplus. recipes?lemon curd, custard, besides fried, and boiled.
Try making whipped cream, yogurt, butter, sour cream, ice cream, cheeses with milk/cream.
Read figure out what breed of large livestock, if any, that you can support on your new homestead.
One thing I'm seeing is people are putting too many or too large of animals on too small of properties. And becoming overwhelmed.
GO SLOW, START WITH 2 ANIMALS, THEN BUILD UP SLOWLY TO WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD AND WHAT THE LAND WILL SUPPORT, AND HOW MUCH IT WILL COST TO RAISE FROM BABIES TO HARVEST AGE.
Here are some things people can do BEFORE getting a homestead. Hope it helps someone.

If homesteading desert areas, consider desert vegetation and animals to grow and raise.
Prickly pear cactus, the pads and fruit, are both edible and don't require extra watering.
Mesquite can be used for firewood and the beans can be ground into flour for cooking. Honey bees love mesquite flowers.
Ocatillos can be for building fences after they have died.
Quail is also a desert animal and does very well. Make sure to check with Fish and Wildlife Division. Some quail breeds require a permit.
Like you said...research your area. Knowing what to eat from what easily grows in a certain area is a very good idea.

I bought an acre to farm earlier this year, cash, in New Mexico. I’m saving to build a tiny home it’ll probably a garage, considering a pole barn home, but the garage is more likely. I’m a third of the way to saving for it. I’ve been working on my garden to make the big switch to farming full time.

Oh Katherine you are 1000% correct, and when I do the video about purchasing land (it’ll be within these next 30 videos in 30 days) WATER will always be the most important......

Thank you sooo much . It’s so inspiring. It’s been a dream for 25 years. Now we are seniors in our sixties with 4 adopted children all under the age of 9 to 3 years (all raised from newborns).
We’ve come very close to buying land but would get out bidded. It feels God is driving this dream so we trust he has it under control. I think the Lord wants us to Homeschool… alittle concern about my ability to do so . But you can see the world changing and doing what the Bible said the end times would be like.
Would you pray for us please? Direction and the money to afford. We have equity , my husband been video production for years , we are both on Soc Sec. The potential is there to homestead. We need Gods power to lead us. Thank you so much!

    1. Money. 2. Buy -or- get mortgage on raw land. 2. Make sure it's zoned so you can build/farm/keep animals on it. 3. if not immediate source of water you'll need to invest $$$ in well for water. Yes, MONEY is key to moving onto your own land.

Trust me. I have family that have full time jobs and they do this. So don’t be discouraged at all! That time is mostly used to setting up the land how they want. You still have off days holidays and when you get off work. They make it a family thing so taking care of the land won’t take you away from the family when you get home from work. If you have the drive and work ethic you can make it work. So then when you retire you have everything all set. You may not I’d restan having a full time job doesn’t mean it can’t be done and done well

Wow! This was the video I needed!!! I will go now and start watching all your videos. I just bought 160 acres in SW Colorado. It has a very old house on it that needs soooo much work. I am told it has 3 wells... 2 have not been used in 30+ years. I have a 16 yr. Old Daughter and I want to get this farm up and running for her to inheritance so she will always be able to have a small income and a home of her own. Right now, most of the farmable land is tied up in a government conservation program called C.R.P. (Conservation Resource Program) where the government pays me about $30 per acre NOT to farm it. I think there are about 120 acres contracted for 2 more years then I will be free to do whatever I want with all of my land. I paid cash for the property and I have no debt whatsoever. No credit card debt, no car payments, no school loans. Those are the good parts, but the bad parts are (1.) I do have an old tractor but no harvesting equipment and no implements to speak of. (2.) I have no real experience in agricultural production or where to sale my product which will be wheat or pinto beans. (3.) My land has not been actively farmed in about 20 years. (4.) 2 sides of my property are not fenced.
I have lived on a farm here in SW Colorado that belongs to my boyfriend's family. I have lived here for about 5 years now, but they lease their farmable land to another farmer who does the farming so I know nothing about farming.
I have raised chickens, ducks and pigs and 1 turkey. lol
I thought there would be classes and information available from the local agriculture extension office that would help me to know what to do next, but there really isn't much available in the way of educational help. I thought I would be able to learn about farming programs or funding programs from them as well, but I have hit a dead end. I'm not big on government programs but I would think there would be lots of how-to info from them. I guess RUclips is it huh?😁 I will rewatch this video and follow the links you mentioned. Thanks for all your help. I'll subscribe!

I am planning on getting my homestead in 1 1/2 yrs in N. Idaho. I have 3 short term goals before I move to N. Idaho.
1 buy a strong 4x4 truck that will be useful and functional on the homestead and the cold snowy winters. Buy a 5th wheel to take to the homestead. Have the truck and 5th wheel paid for and last.. Save save save all the money I can before I move.Since 2016 I live and work on Co. Property. I bought a small travel trailer and do not pay rent or utilities. I paid off the trailer and will sell it after I get my 5th wheel. My 5th wheel I will pay cash for. I just bought a Ford F350 4x4 LariatI paid cash for more than half of my truck and will have it paid off by early March or sooner. In May I will have cash to buy my 5th wheel outright then sell my travel trailer and my car. So then all the money I make will be saved for my homestead . I work hard 118 a week 7 days a week to achieve my 3 short term goals. My dream of my homestead is very real now as I have achieved my first goal and my 2nd goal is not too far away.

Thank you for this video and others of yours that I’ve watched. This was mine and my fiancés (of 11 1/2 years) dream, was to live more self sufficient, with less city restrictions and be able to teach our young kids (7 and 5) how to live a better lifestyle. We talked about it forever and watched videos on how to build your own cabins, and learning about permaculture and how to make a food forest, etc. We had plans and lists and all sorts of ideas…I was a stay at home mom while he was on the road and we were living with my parents to try to save money to get out on our own again. Wether that was buying raw land, or buying a property with some good acreage and a house already there…we were going to invest in alternative energy where ever we ended up…. But unfortunately he was just recently killed in a semi-truck accident and I’m lost and now I don’t know what to do or how to do it without him. It all just seems so impossible now.

Is severe weather a concern? With a small home? Did you do anything extra to secure your tiny home? In case of tornadoes? Your kids are living a great life with all that space around for adventure

    • @BetterTogetherLife
      @BetterTogetherLife  4 года назад +2

Well Carol here is our main thought, YES of course we do think about severe weather and it is certainly a negative about small home living.
We plan on getting a storm shelter hopefully in the next couple of years.
Now....we also aren’t too concerned. Because IF a tornado is in your backyard then you are in trouble no matter what home you’re in. Of course that is over exaggerating a little. But if a tornado hits your home it is going to do serious damage no matter what.
And for shed to house or mobile home or RV living..... that structure will be dust in the wind if a 🌪 hits you directly.
Certainly something to think about, but we try not to live by fear.
I hope this makes sense, I’ll be glad to put this in a video in the next 30 days. 😁👍🏻

For homesteaders, please remember to teach your children why you decided to be a homesteader. Your values to reflect in politics, faith, food, etc. When they go out into the world, they will be bombarded by the world/cities values and you need to arm them to think for themselves founded on values.

My husband and I are planning on living in a travel trailer (will buy after house closes) and maybe living in my moms front yard in it or in my mother in law’s spare room. I’m pregnant with our fourth child and due in December. We are working on replacing my husband’s normal job with multiple incomes now. We hope to save a down payment by spring time to buy raw land in Idaho. Our family of six would be so blessed to be your homestead funding guinea pigs! I know this video is from last year but I just want to say that I am so grateful for your channel! I'm about to be a single mom of three and have been researching for months ways to own a home that isn't cookie cutter and also not be in the suburbs(I really love dandelions...turns out that neighbors don't hah). I am moving home to Florida for the first time in 10 years next year and finding your channel has really given me hope that we can have what we need and where we need it. I love your tip on incomes. I will unfortunately have to have a 9-5(7-3?) which was really feeling like a big blockade on my ability to do the work myself(which is the big thing that would make it affordable, what a catch, eh?) but now I have some ideas budding on how to get multiple streams in a one adult home. Thanks for being you! I have only watched five of your videos so far but I can already feel the wheels turning. Can't wait to watch the rest!

Amber, you are doing the hard stuff in life and that is never wasted. The rush to homestead is usually just bc we really want it. But the time in the waiting is what sets us up for success. We started with that same desire to want to make a huge shift. Trust the process is producing everything you need for this to become your reality. We are cheering for you. (I love dandelions too!)

hi there, looking forward to the 30 days of 30 videos :) would like to know more about how to test the quality of the soil, as in how do you know if it is good or not in the matter of growing your garden? Also, how do you make your own compost/manure and what to keep in mind in the matter of what animal poop you are using for the purpose - you talked a bit about rabbit poop being cold manure, maybe a video about hot manure as well :) Furthermore it could be very interesting to learn more about how you get electricity as well as water/drinking water on your property - do you use solarpanels, generator, well, rain water catchment? And in case, your property didn't already had a well etc, which solution did you go for and why? Lastly, do you plan on expanding your range of animals, perhaps even a video on what farm animals you recommend and why (like the video on your rabbits, which was really educational) :)

I think, if you're early enough in life and you make small income 9-5, and adhere to these principles, you can make it happen.
But having the ability to be self employed, and then just saying "get multiple income streams", is a bit like saying "just be rich!"
Finding legitimate income stream sources, is hard enough. But even once you find the legitimate ones, it takes investing considerable amounts of money over years, and possibly a decade, before it's (a) viable "income stream", let alone "multiple".
This has been a dream of mine, since I was a teenager. I'm many decades past that time, now, and still in a 9-5. I just don't know how I can make this happen, at my age.

    • @BetterTogetherLife
      @BetterTogetherLife  Год назад

      Great comment!!!!
This is easier said than done, BUT….I’m going to say it….
Instead of using your language of, “I just don’t know how I can make this happen at my age.”
      Say….
“I still have enough years ahead of me, HOW can I make this happen?”
There is a mental hump there that you have to get over. You CAN DO IT!!! But you have to find a way to unlock the most powerful computer in the universe….the computer in between your ears.
When you say, “I can’t do this.” Then your 🧠 computer shuts down. It thinks, “oh good, my person already solved the equation for me. I can go to sleep.”
But, when you write down on pen and paper and hang it up where you brush your teeth every morning…. “How can I homestead, make more money, etc?”
Then, you 🧠 computer has to go to work and solve the equation. You’ll begin to get ideas when you are: driving, showering, doing dishes or laundry, at dinner, or basically everywhere you will get ideas. Your job is to merely WRITE EVERY IDEA DOWN, there are no bad ideas!!!!
Then….you pick the best idea and you go for it!
Hope that helps a tiny bit.

hate when people diss 9-5s I love my job and love my guys, I'm looking at a new home (not the acreage i want but it is right next to the pool river and baseballfield so life will be beautiful while we gain some equity!
But at the same time its over 40 minutes from my job and that just means I wanna buy some good CDs to get me to and from, and maybe a more gas efficent car!
I would have passive income if my music went mainstream lol, or if I had the time away from the 9-5 to work on my books/comics
microhomesteading would just add happiness to life, thats all I want, because I need time for art, Once I draw up enough to fill up some shelves I can get hustling on the marketing end! Spend too much time thinking about it instead of getting it done but art takes time and i'm in no rush, it wont be valueable until the message clicks, till you hear it and want it all, or till i'm gone and you wonder why

@@BetterTogetherLife It's just that people always say (people meaning my dad) don't quit your day job, maybe turning the hours into part time could work for some people. Idk what you do for passive or self employment, but youtube videos doesn't seem like a feel like a real option to me, and passive income makes me think stocks and investments which I need the money for bills and to invest in myself/land, maybe in the future when I have a stockpile (tax returns with kids is AWESOMEEEEE :P)
i'm not knocking your hustle and I agree that iffff I could find a way to work at home all day I would (Maybe one day a week cooking at the bar becauseeee those are my guys) but to put my faith and expect peoples generousity just for happiness is too much, growing food would be cool but selling it seems soooo confusing and restricted/permitted. I do know that with the industry I'm in, I would be able to find customers, sooooo if I go with the flow and prove my worth I think that one day other income will be on the table other then an hourly wage. but step one is committing and working your ass off instead of just doing the job and looking for alternatives.

I love your guys channel and the reason why is the straight forward talking like you did in this video.. thank you! When I am ready, I plan on being in Texas as well homesteading somewhere between Amarillo and Lubbock because I still like the change of seasons.. I am from Nebraska and just cannot take the cold we get here anymore but still like the change of seasons and being able to have a yard so no desert areas for me. Here in a little over 3 years, I should be ready to roll.. working on paying down debt and building some more equity in my house before I sell.My plan is to find a piece of property that is ideal for me and live in my converted shuttle bus while I do the build on the property using a shed or something similar like you guys did. Hopefully get something close to rural water so I don't run a well or carry it.. I also plan on a propane tank that would sit in the yard, grew up on a farm using them and that worked great only having to fill once or twice a year, and running solar for electric with generator back-up.

Get out of debt before you buy your property,, pay off those credit cards and put them away. Why pay them off then buy, because if you do not have any bills to pay you can pay off the land so fast by making larger payments. I have done homesteading before, currently have a flock of 35 chickens, and garden in our back yard but cant wait to get back to it, I miss the larger animals. We will be buying our (I live with my daughter, I am 62 she is 37) property in the spring and moving into a home the next summer. We will still have a mortgage to pay for the home, but the property will be paid in full before we put a house on it, which should double the value of the mortgage once completed.
