Wow what a difference. I wish I had that kind of time. Garage helps too. Maybe I can get to do a little cleaning this summer. Thanks for another great video Tom's Turbo Garage
You're very welcome Christopher and thank you for watching! It's true that doing a little at a time works. It can be very discouraging at first, but that's normal. Just gotta power through that and imagine the end result.
I love all of the cars you have shared with us, but there is something special about this Galant. Sharing the experience from the beginning has been really enjoyable.
Thank you for the sentiment and I agree. I didn't tune into it at first, but during the process of cleaning it up my appreciation for the car has grown tremendously. It has a great Japanese character, something that is missing from a DSM in my opinion. Keep an eye out for the finale video next week!
All of your vr-4 video are awesome. i never really like the galants before. But watching your video has really changed opinion on them. i hope to see more video like this. 10/10
I can't describe how happy I am this GVR4 finally found its real owner. There's something about seeing old, worn out, or nearly broken cars come back to life.
Thank you and I'm glad you feel that way! At first I appreciated the car, but throughout this process I've grown very attached to it and it's very distinct Japanese character!
Tom I admire you're videos so much! I don't wrench much because i really don't have much to wrench on. But like when i see you're videos i get all excited to start wrenching and just start personalizing my own vehicle! Thanks for all the small tips and sharing you're knowledge and tricks on how you do what you do! Keep these videos coming man!
Looks awesome! I wish more people would take the time and fix their cars like this. It will help the resale so much! Last year I bought a near mint 91 BMW E30 318is with perfect paint for $1500 put $500 worth of new parts in it, everywhere from replacing all the bushings, inner and outer tie rods, ball joints, every gasket on the engine, and hand cleaned every part to where the engine bay looked new, and detailed the rest of the car and I sold it for $4000 on the noise. And now I miss it lol
Great job on the end result! I need to start replacing those heat shields as well! I usually like to keep the valve cover stock just to be original. I can't believe you have 2 4G63's in your garage. Great cars very rare and original. They don't make them like that anymore!
Thanks for posting these videos Tom! I'm glad I found your channel, it provided me great quality in camera work and walkthroughs! I love how you put so much time in moving the tripods and working for your viewers, I think it shows how dedicated you are! Thank you!!!
Tom, awesome video again. I can't help but say it was very relaxing to watch this as I get the same joy from cleaning/organizing my engine bay and improving it's cleanliness. Though, I hate admit I don't clean as much in the winter time.
YES, 1st comment on a Tom's Turbo Garage video! outstanding and thoroughly detailed video as always. I absolutely love watching your meticulous work and your video's . thanks for taking the time in this busy time of the year ! Happy Holidays !
Haha, thank you Don! I'm glad you enjoy the videos and look out for the end result of our hard work on the Galant coming next week- I'm sure you'll enjoy that one. Happy Holidays to you too!
Wow she's looking great! I think you should toss a set of 93 headlights on. They're crystal clear, and really clean up the front end a lot. It's the #1 cosmetic upgrade to the GVR4 here in the northwest.
Great work! I'm restoring my old 79 Firebird and the engine bay is next up. This vid gives me some comfort that I will be done.. at some point :) But new paint, new engine and all the stuff is gonna work wonders. Keep it all up!
really loving the detailing videos, I have an 03 forester, and like you have a great need for attention to detail. I wanted a great finish, and to make it look pretty good for a 12 yearold car. Thanks tom, and always don't stop making videos.
You missed a spot. Kidding. It looks great. It's amazing how many people neglect this area. On my Datsun project, I'm going so far as to clean and paint every bolt on the car. It's amazing the results you get with a little extra effort.
Wow, you do amazing work! I am not sure if I am this patient. However, I do understand where you are coming from. At times, my friends and relatives will find me in their garages cleaning their engine bays. It is definitely not normal.
Thank you sir! I honestly have never come across another crazy person who details friends and relatives engine bays! I have been doing this since I was very young and yes, everyone thinks its nuts. :-D
Tom's Turbo Garage Yea, it is cathartic. I do have a story or two. Yet, I cringe when I see someone with the hood up and the pressure washer blasting. Yeeks! Pressure washers are fine and dandy but I think they are abused and over-utilized. Rock on, valve cover lover.
This video just saved me from pressure washing my 89' GT-R R32's bay that im getting in December straight from Japan here to Texas. TBH i was kinda scared about doing that since my car is over 20 years old also, thanks man! :) Can't wait to get to it :)
Great to hear! Pressure washing is fast and works fine when done properly, but it does typically blow off the cool factory under hood stickers and can cause other problems. I like this approach as it's gentle on the setup and allows you to inspect things too. Have fun with your awesome import! :-D
Hey Tom, great video and ever since you did the video of the vbox on your lexus i have wanted to see it on the talon. Once again great work on vr4 glad to see it back in shape.
I thought I was crazy for enjoying this type of detail work. Like u said this shows the level of care for your car. Every car I have ever owned has a engine bay u could eat off of. And when it comes for sale. People always point out how clean the engine bay looks. I love how u did not just spray cleaner let it and power wash. That for me is a BIG NO NO. On new cars its of SOMETIMES. By hand with part removal like u showed is the proper way in my book. The car looks amazing . I cant wait to see more. I hope to find my project 93-94 Subaru legacy ss turbo car soon. still on the hunt for a clean 1. wish me luck
Awesome Tom! Good job! You made me spit my coffee out when the "NOOO!!!!!" part came on lol. It was scary watching you use the bench grinder with gloves on, I've heard some horror stories of them getting snagged and pulling the hand in and around the wheel, nasty stuff! Anyway, keep up the good work! I've been looking for Galants as I've never dabbled with 4G63s before and this seems like a nice modest Mitsu that doesn't grab attention.
Thank you Ben! I believe it was a spot where the stock heat shield rubbed against the manifold and made it appear kinda "chalky" I remember inspecting it at the time. That said, they do crack after many years of use.
Buffing bolts is great, but you can remove the zinc plating allowing the part to rust much easier. Bolts that have been under a wire wheel either need to be painted or re-zinc plated in order to maintain their shine.
Absolutely true and that's one of those things I wish I would've mentioned in the video. I only wire wheeled the battery hold downs due to the rust. For the zinc coated hardware, I usually just clean those.
Thank you Izzy! There are different tactics for rust repair that depend on the severity and location of the rust. Google searches will give you great examples and instruction on how to repair. It ranges from a simple anti-rust coating to cutting out and welding in new metal.
Thank you sir! Stay tuned for more on that real soon. :-D I will definitely not be building a monster like the Talon though - this thing drives like a dream and I won't be compromising that with cams that chop up the idle, loud, droning exhausts, etc.
this is the kinda thing I like to see...ppl taking pride in their rides and keeping em nice n clean. nice job man!!! I have a bmw e39 and I absolutely hate when its dirty. btw can u make a list of products u used to detail the car? I would like to buy some of em.
Hi there and thank you for saying that! For engine detailing, I like to use a mild degreaser like fast orange, or the one from Zep. I also use silicone spray to clean and restore rubber parts and a low gloss detailer spray. Enjoy your e39!
Tom, you need to invest in a quality blast cabinet bud. The best investment I ever made was in my upright blast cabinet and Qunicy 60 Gallon Two-Stage Compressor. I use the blast cabinet all the time, and find it an indispensable tool for restoration work.
So does powder coating warp your valve covers or not? People say the heat warps them but those were posts from years ago. People's thoughts? I hate painting mine, it always chips within a year and doesn't pop as much. Plus I think grime sticks to it over time when the paint is hot while the car is running.
I would trust that a skilled powdercoater knows how to do it right. The quality of the work varies greatly depending on the skill of the coater, from what I've seen. For example, Justin (at detective coating) has coated hundreds of valve covers on both street and race cars. His work was on display at the shootout and I didn't see any leaks.
Hey! I recently bought a 1990 eagle talon and your videos are helping a ton with the restore! I've been having a nightmare looking for new hood insulator for it! Any websites i could find it on?
Thanks man, glad I can help with your new project! I would suggest www.jnztuning.com Give them a call, they can get any Mitsu/DSM part if it's available.
I had cleaned my engine bay when the motor was out along with everything associated. A few test drives later I got oil gushing out the hotside of the turbo through a leak in the downpipe while going down the highway at 70mph. It sure did ruin nearly everything I cleaned. Now Im stuck everytime I pop my hood cleaning this and that trying to squeeze my hand under stuff.
Tom's Turbo Garage thanks for the reply! Just got mine but it's not a Vr4. It's a GTI FWD with the same engine. Thanks mate! -Your subscriber from Philippines
Tom I just found your channel, this and the exterior video were very informative, I think with a little patience I can clean up my old 4Runner a little bit. :)
I started cleaning the hood with dishwashing fluid. I couldn't get baked in oil and dirt. How do I go about that? Is the dishwashing fluid not capable enough?
Hi Gino, yeah probably not strong enough. I use a citrus based degreaser (test it out to make sure it doesn't damage the paint, etc) and then a cleaner wax.
Another awesome job by TurboTom! Haha. I miss the old 4G61t.org forum, but most of all, I miss my old Colt with the 4G63t swap. I've never owned a VR4 but they're definitely awesome cars. Almost like a 4 door T/L/E. My old 90 Tsi was an awesome car too. Anyway, good to see that you're still at it bud. -89d15crx (Rob)
Now this an attention to detail i would give a ten to on the engine compartment holy crap! And also i wish i knew your mitsubishi parts guy cause they are fricking awesome
Thanks for a speedy update! Are you kidding? you're friends with Justin at detective coating? I was thinking of having the valve cover done there for my GSX, Their work is amazing.
Or can I convert the Elantra 94 like this Lancer 92 car that you are working on knowing that my Elantra 94 is automatic, but I want it as the first wheel drive. Please help me. 1.8 cc fully automatic, powerful, economical, attractive and coherent ,,, also with the rims knowing the same cut of the Elantra same Lancer 92 that you have
I have got to get out of the 1970's and get one of these turbo charged sedans. I do enjoy my 1972 stage 1 Buick, but I think it is about time for a new home. V.
Thanks Xavier, it is a fun car and yes you're right the GSXs are getting harder to find. As for upgrades, I always say catching up and making sure all of the maintenance is taken care of is #1. If that is all up to snuff then here's a good source. www.dsmtuners.com/threads/1g-dsm-upgrade-paths.486218/ Good luck!
hey tom... can i soggest you something? create a facebook's page with albums from your restored cars. i did naver cleaned my engine bay cause i had much fear but um gave me some courage. thanks for this tutorial (cause i can't call this a simple video)
Hi Thiago, that's a great suggestion- currently I keep all of that on each of my individual car websites, but putting pics on FB makes sense too. Glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful!
Wow what a difference. I wish I had that kind of time. Garage helps too. Maybe I can get to do a little cleaning this summer.
Thanks for another great video Tom's Turbo Garage
you can do it bit by bit, doing small part jobs each spare hour you have.
Eventually you will have a complete ly cleaned engine bay.
I tried that, but then I see the rest, get disgusted, and close my hood.. lol
You're very welcome Christopher and thank you for watching! It's true that doing a little at a time works. It can be very discouraging at first, but that's normal. Just gotta power through that and imagine the end result.

Thanks for the shout-out, Tom!
Everything looks amazing, as always. The before & after shots really show that your hard work has paid off!
You're very welcome my friend and thank you!
All of your vr-4 video are awesome. i never really like the galants before. But watching your video has really changed opinion on them. i hope to see more video like this. 10/10
Thank you Austin, glad you enjoyed them! I didn't fully appreciate VR-4s either until I owned one. They have tons of character and are fun to drive.
Austin Flynn galants are amazing cars, I really wish Mitsubishi would bring these cars back to their rallye days with the lancer.
I'll be doing my Impala soon before I sell it, I figured watching your detail videos again would help motivate me and give me ideas.

Thank you and it definitely improves the perceived value of a car! Good to hear about your BMW project, I get attached to cars too. :-/
I love your hard work and dedication to the details. I'm sure that first impression is a good one when people see this car in person!
Thank you for saying that!
What a beautiful work you did right there! Makes me happy just seeing it. Congrats! Subscribed.
Thank you Hugo and welcome!
You really are a hardworker man! i already watch all of your galant videos and i am amazed! Great Work!
SpinFrostX12 Thank you sir, I appreciate that! Thanks for checking out my videos, glad you enjoyed them.

Thank you for saying that Phillip! Very glad to hear that you enjoyed the video!
i have a galant gti-16v hatchback 88 siting almost 5 years and a want to clean it but my dad dont let me do it
YES, 1st comment on a Tom's Turbo Garage video! outstanding and thoroughly detailed video as always. I absolutely love watching your meticulous work and your video's . thanks for taking the time in this busy time of the year ! Happy Holidays !

Looking great as always, Tom. Wouldn't had thought to take items off the firewall or clean the bolts that way. Excellent tips.
Thank you Adam and I'm glad the info is helpful!
amazing. I just had the oil leaks fixed on my montero and now I need to do an engine bay clean up. Nice to see this video
Wow she's looking great! I think you should toss a set of 93 headlights on. They're crystal clear, and really clean up the front end a lot. It's the #1 cosmetic upgrade to the GVR4 here in the northwest.
Thank you and I agree that is a good look. I'll check into that!
Looks gorgeous. I love a clean engine bay too, especially when it's stock and clean. Factory fresh.
Thank you!
Great work! I'm restoring my old 79 Firebird and the engine bay is next up. This vid gives me some comfort that I will be done.. at some point :) But new paint, new engine and all the stuff is gonna work wonders. Keep it all up!

Gavin Matt Thank you Gavin, I appreciate the support and am glad you're enjoying the videos! Enjoy your Forester!
i do and will continue to do so.
Excellent job Tom. Looks really good.
Thanks man, check out the end result video coming next week!
You missed a spot. Kidding. It looks great. It's amazing how many people neglect this area. On my Datsun project, I'm going so far as to clean and paint every bolt on the car. It's amazing the results you get with a little extra effort.
Haha! I probably did! I agree and enjoy wrenching on your Datsun!
Yes, good job, I luv that feeling of fixing something up like that and seeing good results!
Thank you and I agree!
I use my Mitsubishi 6G72 engine bay photo for my signature!
Nice work and thanks for all the hard work on the videos. Happy Holidays!
Thank you and Happy Holidays to you! That engine bay looks great!
Wow, you do amazing work! I am not sure if I am this patient. However, I do understand where you are coming from. At times, my friends and relatives will find me in their garages cleaning their engine bays. It is definitely not normal.

bg147 Thank you sir!
Once again, nice work Tom! The Grand National looks a little jealous sitting there. You should take her out and do a couple of smokey burnouts.
Simply amazing.
Has to be the cleanest US vr4 there is.
Thank you for saying that! It's been around the block a few times, but it is a very clean and well taken care of car.
This was awesome. I had my Galant Gti's engine rebuilt and I am into car mode again.
Thanks Gino, glad you enjoyed it!
This video just saved me from pressure washing my 89' GT-R R32's bay that im getting in December straight from Japan here to Texas. TBH i was kinda scared about doing that since my car is over 20 years old also, thanks man! :) Can't wait to get to it :)

Hey Tom, great video and ever since you did the video of the vbox on your lexus i have wanted to see it on the talon. Once again great work on vr4 glad to see it back in shape.
Thank you Caleb! Vboxing the Talon is a little trickier than it seems. It's really fast these days! :-D
haha how much awhp is it putting to the groung
caleb Reedy Over 600 according to drag trap speeds and the data logger.
wow
I love doing all this cleaning, as well! It feels like such an accomplishment when you're all done.
I totally agree Mitch!
Looks Great! What products do you use?
I thought I was crazy for enjoying this type of detail work. Like u said this shows the level of care for your car. Every car I have ever owned has a engine bay u could eat off of. Great videos! I agree with you on cleaning up the engine bay. A lot of great tips and tricks for cleaning up a car.
Thanks man!
Great work tom... its looking better and better
Thank you sir, glad you thing so!
Thank you and I appreciate the kind words. Thank you also for the tip about the gloves and the wire wheel, I honestly do appreciate that!
You get these out so quickly!
unlike other youtube auto shows....
Thank you for saying that Charles, I wish I had more time to dedicate to these videos- it's strictly a "spare time" project at the moment.
great job man looks great cant wait to see what people think at the shows
Thank you Matthew! Look out for that video coming next week.
great job! Although, when you took off your heat shield, there looked to be a crack in your manifold. Did you notice it?
Thank you Ben! I believe it was a spot where the stock heat shield rubbed against the manifold and made it appear kinda "chalky" I remember inspecting it at the time. That said, they do crack after many years of use.
I know when they crack and leak, the cracked area looks white. Didnt want to to waste all that hard work!
ben lieske Thanks Ben, I do appreciate it!
Incredible as usual my friend.
Thank you!
very nice..I got my '92 galant and im doing the same too.I love to see under my hood..nice & clean.
Thank you Edan and good luck with your car!
Like the videos! Can you give me any clues on the trick about replacing the stationary back door glass?
Just curious on where did u get the original parts from like that hood insulation
What is the orange spray bottle that your are using?
It's a degreaser with orange oil in it. I got it in the auto section at walmart, I believe it is called Orange Clean or something along that line.
Hey Tom! What is your job? What you do for living?
Great job cleaning her up and the end result is fantastic. Do you plan on keeping her stock?
Thank you and watch out for the final product video next week. As for next steps...stay tuned! :-D
How you did a great job! Thanks for sharing all of your tips!
Thank you and I'm glad you find the videos helpful!

Why didn't you clean under the hud before cleaning the outside of the car?
hello i have also galant 1989 but how u import parts from mistobise???
How many hours do you figure you have in the engine bay cleaning? Excellent job as always.
Thank you Trevor! Oh man, I don't keep track of hours- mainly because I'm fearful to know how much time I'm investing, haha! It took a LONG time!
as i said before! i appreciate your work for our success... but what do i do for rust?
Thank you Izzy! There are different tactics for rust repair that depend on the severity and location of the rust. Google searches will give you great examples and instruction on how to repair. It ranges from a simple anti-rust coating to cutting out and welding in new metal.
Great video as always!
Thank you sir!
A night and day difference. Spectacular work, Tom! Is this one going to stay stock, then?
Thank you sir! Stay tuned for more on that real soon. :-D I will definitely not be building a monster like the Talon though - this thing drives like a dream and I won't be compromising that with cams that chop up the idle, loud, droning exhausts, etc.
Tom's Turbo Garage
Looking forward to the next episode!
JobeMinacum Thank you so much Jobe, glad I can help!
Hi tom, what would be a good source for purchasing that exhaust heat shield? and oem parts for DSM?
Im very amazed with yur detailing.... mad props man :)
Thank you Dave, I appreciate that!
Good work Tom. As always!!
Thank you very much!
Cairan apa yg di pakai itu untuk membersikan nya

Bummer! We've all been there :-/
Did you replace the wire loom or dis it clean up fine?
Thankfully it was just a little dusty/grimy and cleaned up nicely.
I'm just curious, how hard would it be to find parts for a galant?
Nathan Worland depends on if the part vr4 exclusive or not
Hello did you put some clear on your valve cover?
+Darth Armr Hi there, no I don't usually with this kind of paint.
Tom's Turbo Garage thanks for the reply! Just got mine but it's not a Vr4. It's a GTI FWD with the same engine. Thanks mate!
-Your subscriber from Philippines
if you put a vr4 in a galant do you have to change the transmission
Rashad Halabi yes and the floor
What did you use to clean the filler caps? Thanks.
I believe Bleach White.
Why didn’t you just unbolt the hood and wash it like you would any other body panel?
I be sad then when I see tom on my news feed I get happy =)
Glad I can help out! :-D
Look great love the car. Your should do a 3000gt vr4 next.
Thank you! Oh man, I've always had a soft spot for those super-rare spider hardtop convertibles!
Good job, Tom! How long did it actually take you to clean up the engine bay?
Thank you Dmity! Oh man it took days and days. I lost track :-D
Tom I just found your channel, this and the exterior video were very informative, I think with a little patience I can clean up my old 4Runner a little bit. :)
This is what I do to my engine bays! So much hours of hard work most people think I'm crazy! Stay tuned to my Talon video coming soon!
I'm sure we're the same in this regard, but a clean engine bay just makes me happy. It always has. I look forward to your videos man!
Magic moment...a true car lover...

Hi Gino, yeah probably not strong enough. I use a citrus based degreaser (test it out to make sure it doesn't damage the paint, etc) and then a cleaner wax.
Tom's Turbo Garage I tried GooGone which is citrus based. That helped a bit but some stains are fully baked in.
Subscribed! Great work!
Thanks man!
Tom's Turbo Garage Hey man, does the US have GTI VR-4 AMG TUNED?
Hi Emmanuel, no we do not. A few folks have made clones from parts found online though.
oh, haha i was almost planning to clone as well. but on a spacewagon. ultimate sleeper.
Sounds awesome to me!!
do more rare classic american muscle. like the grand national .
Is that a 5.0 off to the left?
Hi Vincent, the car to the left of the Galant in the garage is an 87 Grand National. I would love to have a LX 5.0 though!

Robert Keeton Thank you Robert! Oh yeah, I miss my old 4G63 Mirage too. Good to meet you and have a good one!
Now this an attention to detail i would give a ten to on the engine compartment holy crap! And also i wish i knew your mitsubishi parts guy cause they are fricking awesome
Thank you Joseph!
went as far as polishing the factory aluminum a/c lines lol. Great job!
Thank you and that's a nice little detail that adds some nice color contrast. Love that natural aluminum color.
Thanks for a speedy update! Are you kidding? you're friends with Justin at detective coating? I was thinking of having the valve cover done there for my GSX, Their work is amazing.
Thank you Christian! Yes, Justin is a great guy and hard worker. He does such awesome work, call him up!
Hard disagree with taking the sticker off the battery since you don't have the cca for testing it then and dont know how old it is
Or can I convert the Elantra 94 like this Lancer 92 car that you are working on knowing that my Elantra 94 is automatic, but I want it as the first wheel drive. Please help me. 1.8 cc fully automatic, powerful, economical, attractive and coherent ,,, also with the rims knowing the same cut of the Elantra same Lancer 92 that you have
Very good your work! (clean and tidy to detail mechanical) "good mechanic is" very lucky and you have a very merry Christmas and New Year
Thank you my friend! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you!
I have got to get out of the 1970's and get one of these turbo charged sedans. I do enjoy my 1972 stage 1 Buick, but I think it is about time for a new home. V.
Turbo cars are great fun! You'll have the best of both worlds with the 70s muscle and modern turbo horsepower!
I hate this kind of work, but I love the results!
I agree! At first it just seems insurmountable, but as time goes by it gets more rewarding.
Wish i had a Vr-4 yours is awesome ! I just got a gst would get a gsx but they are hard to find an expensive haha what should be my first upgrades ?
Thanks Xavier, it is a fun car and yes you're right the GSXs are getting harder to find. As for upgrades, I always say catching up and making sure all of the maintenance is taken care of is #1. If that is all up to snuff then here's a good source. www.dsmtuners.com/threads/1g-dsm-upgrade-paths.486218/ Good luck!
Great vid!!!
Thank you!

Hi Thiago, that's a great suggestion- currently I keep all of that on each of my individual car websites, but putting pics on FB makes sense too. Glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful!
Love it looks sooo good!!
Thank you Dillon!

Thank you Robert!
Interesting cleaning video
I'm going to do this with my dads GVR4 when the snow goes away so it can be nice and clean!
Sounds like a great project, good luck with it!
