Really awesome series. You have some excellent wood working skills.
Great tips Cody, I like videos that people give tips on even if they are basic, not all of us are master craftsmen including me! Take care, God Bless.
I liked your exact 29 and 5/8s... said it like 4 times... marked it 28 5/8s heh. I did find an old skil saw at an antique store and grabbed it up right away. Old and heavy, cant wait to do an oil change on it and try it out. Love your videos!
Respect for not editing out misjudgements/mistakes.
I really like the "Quick Tips" in reference to using some of your tools more efficiently....While I have used many of these tools before, I wasn't using them as well as I could have been...Thanks for those tips.
Hola......saludos desde Chile.....muy buenos videos....sigan haciedo más por favor👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Great Fun! Good Lessons!
God Bless Brother!
Thank You!
Oh my, I just discovered Wranglerstar treehouse videos. Didn’t know these existed.
Que boa dica amigo! Grato
did you mean 28 5/8"? lol just picking on you! great series! love it!
Shayner006 I was wondering if anyone would pick up on this. Be sure I did cut the board 1" short LOL. I should never ever do math on camera. It never ends well,
I caught it too!
I do stuff like that all the time! It is my only down fall.
wranglerstar
this is God's wrath for not using metric system
pjakkur007 Off an Inch or a cm... a mistake is a mistake... for me I'd rather be wrong American style!! LOL
I have that same set of stanley no. 750 chisels with original handles as well. was actually sharpening them while watching this!
great series! following along.. one thought..
a friend of mine had an accident at work for pulling the guard like that. i wish i had the pictures to post them. should not tell your son "not to do that" then do it in front of him. sends the opossite message.
but great videos thou! you got a new subscriber!!
:)
this so cool u got that throw you make siding and shingles roof, or timber frame it or long cabin it. all stuff already practice you do 2/3 normal size down so not so heavey. you could even hurdles or what called the wall just like make basket only make flat like sheet paper. leave that or cover mud keep air flow through.
I can hear it now. Mrs. hollering at Jack "If you cur your leg off with your Dad's saw with that guard wedged back, don't come running to me"!! !0/4 on the Estwing. I like the ring!
Very cool how you used the chisel.
Cody, if you are worried about the door slamming on fingers you use toy box hinges. They won't let the door slam and some will give you a lift assist.
Woodcraft or rockier has them, I am sure you can find them on Amazon as well.
We might have to take your tool belt away... you told Jack he had to drive a 16 penny nail in five strokes. I counted 9 or 10 on that 12 penny. ; ) This is a great series keep up the good work!
Awesome
Is it possible too build a trap door in a express van say above the step.... double doors on the side of the van for an auxiliary battery compartment ? Great channel by the way!
How about a shock absorber for a car hood to soften the close on that door.
+628DirtRooster yes! you don't want to get any disturbance from violently closing doors..
Gino Foogle Or banged heads or smashed fingers. :)
Kids don't pin the gard back! Good stuff cody its looking good!
hey wranglerstar,
would it support the weight if you used a wooden dowel instead of 2x4?
Have your considered a hydraulic strut to hold the door up? They seem like a cheap and reliable solution for the trap door and will make it look nice.
I like that.
"Don't ever pin the guard back on the saw like that!" Lol, and don't ever use it after it falls off the ladder and shatters the guard compleatly off, specially not for 6 years after... I finally got rid of it after the "Daddy, why doesn't your saw have a thingy over the blade like Grampa's?" question...
Nice video. Here in Brazil we're not used to build treehouses for our kids. I hope be able to build a well to my son, when i have one hehe
Congratulations!
I would suggest some struts mounted on the sides under the door to help pop it open and hold it, like on newer car hoods, or springs like older car hoods. That way you don't have a string/cable/whathaveyou in the way up top when the door is closed :)
On 1-1/2" stock, the correct bevel is 10 degrees on the swing side of the door to prevent binding. It's just enough so that (in this case) the bottom side of the door barely clears the top corner of the floor boards. That way, you don't have to put a reveal in the swing side of the door if you don't want to.
I would suggest setting up the counterweight so that the door slowly closes and won't stay open. It reduce the chance of someone forgetting the door is open and back into the hole in the floor
As someone who is completely new to working with wood, what determines whether or not you use a screw or nail? Coming from a mechanical background, i would just try and use a screw every time as they would stay in better right?
That is a proper "secret door." Great idea with the window weight, that door falling would really hurt your fingers or head. Looks great!
Hey Cody is that Mount Rainier that your property over looks? I have always loved the Pacific Northwest especially the Cascade mountain range. Over the last 6 months I have been looking at property all throughout the region to establish my own homestead. I am curious to know if you y'all live on the east or west side of the range and what side you would suggest. I would tend to think the west side would be a better choice. I love Nevada with all my heart but I loath the summers and the heat!!! Lol. Any insight would be great and very much appreciated!!! Your channel and videos are fantastic hahaha but I am not much of a commenter or a fan of "social medias". I enjoy seeing and sharing your love and appreciation for the tools and trades of those generations before us and keeping them alive. So many of these skills and trades are becoming a dying art form and it saddens me. I am glad to see that there are others like your self holding on to them and helping reignite them!!! Keep up the great work! Your friend in Nevada Tyler
wranglerstar On the trap-door you can use the lift struts on a car trunk door (prefferably like a van with some hefty size ones) they are basically like hydraulics but will just spring up when you push o the door and then stand there then when you want pull them back down and they will sit there until you want to come back in. (I'm sure you know what I'm talking about). But you can just pick some up from a junk yard and mount two to the door and now you have that to keep from crunching fingers.
I get the biggest kick out of your sayings for safety! haha "dont pin your guard back" hahah
You're a good papa.
Cody I've noticed a few video links at the end aren't clickable ... could be just me but just thought you might like to check...
A thought regarding the window weight concept, what if you were to set it up with something like a pneumatic closer for a screen door, or a hydraulic arm closer for a commercial door ? Then it would close more controllably and could not slam on little fingers. On the screen door closer, most come with some sort of hold-open feature as well, killing two birds with one stone.
By putting the wall on top of the hinge, how do you access the hinge if you have to replace it?
Being a carpenter myself, I have had a saw guard lock back on me without my notice, I set it down on a finished deck. I had to tear up three 2x6 decking boards and replace them. Needless to say I always look at the guard before I set the saw down now.
Hi my tree house hatch is expanding causing it to stick any tips apart from cut it back more?
Heya bro, what hand tools do you carry in your bags all the time? I know you probably add to it for different jobs but what is your basic load?
Here's mine:
1. hammer (22 oz framer, estwing)
2. tape measure
3. chalk box
4. snips (Wiss)
5. straight blade (I like the old stanley)
6. wood chisel
7. pencil
8. speed square
9. 8 and 16 penny nails
(usually more nails and screws than I need, you know :))
Jim Watson I gave them up about 14 years ago and I couldn't be happier. I use a Vaughan 28oz with a hatchet handel now.
Got to have a secret trap door! Awesome.
+KennethKramm as long as you don't have a secret back door.. it's fine.
when you use your speed square to guide your saw try having the long side of the square on the starting side it will help keep the saw squared easier.
Imagine if the trapdoor opened into the room, with something to stop it when it was upright ( or just a fraction past ). That way there would be only one danger zone, and you could have a swinging safety bar to cover that region, so it would be safe to leave the trapdoor open. Dunno if you want to retrofit that for Jack, but people building a treehouse for their kid might consider an alternative.
Old school wranglerstar dominates new school wranglerstar....
I'm starting to notice you're leaving out big chunks of the building process. I really would have liked to see as much as possible from building the floor. Maybe like a time lapse or something. Also hope to see as much as possible from building the walls and roof and so on.
Another, faster way to get a wquare cut on a board with no other tools is to use the baseplate of the saw and line the front of it up with the far edge of the board, start the saw, plung in and cut through. Sounds more complex than it is. It's something I heard about from Larry Haun on some of his videos.
I've got the perfect window weights out back but being on oppusite sides of the country, shipping would be a killer. They're currently buried in about 4' of snow as well.
A couple degree bevel on the jamb end of the door would help with swing clearance
Do yourself a favor and either fix the guard on that saw or get rid of it. My cousin has one mean scar on his hand from about 50 years ago when his father was setting down a saw with a broken guard and did not see him standing there. It's just not worth it.
Jim Watson I've been framing for almost 20 years and haven't really had an issue with the guard. It has a handle on it. When it gets in the way, which isn't often, you just flip it up as you start the cut. And I wear safety glasses when I do it, too.
Nice old Mag 77. Loved those compared to the regular worm drive at the end of a long day. That Mag body and table weighs less. Problem was the crack heads loved it more and stole it off the work truck.
hey whats your favorite hammer ?
I have no Idea, You just know what needs to be done when its done. That is how I finish my best projects.
i love how every dad says "do as i say, not as i do" and then when he is a father, he will say the same to his child.... the way you delivered that line... don't pin it back, as you are doing it, was my kind of humor... ha!
I love these vids. But as an European the crazy measurement make my head hurt, haha.
So how long did it take you to realize you said 29 5/8 instead of your 28 5/8? Looking good. TY for sharing
"Don't pin your guard back on your saw like that"
What about a spring to hold it open? It would work much like the weight system, but the "weight" will be in the spring. It will stay shut when closed past a certain point, but will stay open and open easier when opened past a few inches or so (can adjust with angle of spring). Would probably just put it parallel to the door so when the door was closed it would be flat against the door (could even recessed into it so the door closed to a flat surface inside to avoid tripping). An inset handle cut into the wood would also be nice to avoid tripping issues.
Feel dumb for never thinking to use a speed square as a fence on those short cuts. Just never know what I'll pick up watching these vids. Thanks!
just like the Three Investigators!!!
if the front of the fence on your skilsaw is parallel to the end of the stock your cut will be square. framers trick, from the legend Larry Haun
Is this tree house really for your kid or for you? I really like all your videos.
I'm used to using a skill saw with the guard pinned back my dad was a cedar shake roofer the guard was taken off of his saw you just get in the habit to turn the saw upside down after you were done.
LOL! don't pin your guard back on your saw like that, ever! :)
Cody, notice that you wear the Occidental Lightweights, I do as well for my job. Thought it would be interesting to do a brief review in a video of a "proper" set of bags. Oh, loved the guard shimmed up on the saw as well. Old school!
I think you might consider using a knee-cap to avoid stress on the knees.
You could go to a junk yard and pickup a couple hydraulic hood lifts for the trap door.
Could you round over the corners of both the trap door and the floor edge where they meet so that even if a finger did manage to get trapped down the road, that it wouldn't sheer the finger off? Do you ever see the ladders on the sides of water towers? How they are ladders within a cage? If it was me, I would build the access to the treehouse like that and bypass the whole trap door thing and let the kids climb in and out through the caged ladder on the side of the structure. This would eliminate any of the other issues and all you'd need to do is have an opening in the wall to allow them to get in and out. Thoughts?
A couple falls builds character
Climb through a cage to get into a treehouse...? Sounds like you'd be missing the point of enjoying a treehouse to begin with.
Ben R. And scar tissue.
easy to find and cheap options for the trap door support, friction supports or even spring loaded with a little research. These are used for toy boxes, but can be used with other projects ( add one to each side ) www.homedepot.com/p/Schlage-Friction-5-in-Bright-Brass-Lid-Support-Right-Hand-Hinge-C9220F3-RH/202315143
wheres is the video of the floor installation ??
ints only the trap door, not the floor with the 2x4.
Are you going to have to get this appraised? Just messing with you. This is going to be an awesome Tree House for you.... I mean for Jack. :)
I forget the source, but apparently it's only 1 1/2 inch of screw that holds.
Install a magnetic lock and this would be perfect
Rand paul 2016
Really?!? ......Not particularly Mr. Paul, but this is no place for politics. At least IMHO.
why didn't you put the hinges on the door frame and they would be hidden from the top.
You could ave used a washer with the screws
Colby Charette No these screw are countersunk,
29 5/8 ?
just add a small car trunk shock to the trap door and call it a day
measure twice cut once.......
I'd hope you meant twenty EIGHT and five-eighths, Cody.
29 and 5/8... You said it like 10 times but yet marked it out an inch short...
I'm surprised you use Philips head screws considering how much attention you pay to the quality of your work.
Sigh.....
The hinges are UPSIDE down! Installed that way they are a trip hazard. Flip them over and chisel out for the barrel.
Why even make the door that heavy? Are zombies coming? I think it's dangerous. What if your weight retainer fails during operation? A light weight door (1×2's and a half inch plywood square) would not need a weight assisting mechanism.
That's the kind of mistake I used to make. A heavy door like that can break fingers and toes. A sliding door is the safest way to go. Also there should be two hand holds above equal to the ladder steps. A child coming up will reach for your upright door and BLAM!
I worked as a framer building houses and worked with a crew that took the guards off of their worm drive saws. One guy toward the end of the day...when your tiring....laid the saw right down on his thigh......he did this just once. Some have to learn the hard way!
Some common sense warning signs are for these people who have a deficiency of common sense.
Your having fun aren't you.
u side 29 and 5/8 but u marked it at 28 and 5/8 or am i just seeing things lol
you said to never pin your guard back when in fact that's what you did
Correct
the tree huggers will die over you driving that nail in that tree to hang that chord on bot who needs tree huggers anyway
Skillsaw! Don't do that!! Dangerous
do as i say not as i do
you inched yourself
Really don't care to be a winy sap here, but I kinda really don't like this "do as I say (not as I do)". My dad's said that numours times and it seems to be more of a hypocritical thing. If you're goin to be a proper roll model, then do it proper.
+Alvin Dueck Exactly what I thought Alvin.
I feel ya, being a kid it is very confusing when my dad does something a bad way then says "never do it like that" then continues to do it like that. If you are going to tell me to never do something, dont do it either.
Because dads are stupid but confident enough to do things that way, but they care about their children to the point they don't want them copying that kind of stuff.
Are you sick
You sound a bit different
1st lol
not meant as a real critique, but you did seem a little more hurried than usual.
Well, the secret is out ....there's no fricking secret.
Can I have my nine minutes back ?
