    I appreciate these videos man. Its often difficult to piece together the complicated history of some of these breeds using note books and wise tails. I found it particularly interesting about bulldogs having issues keeping weight. It’s like the metabolism on these dogs is next level. Hard to make them fat

      Thanks for watching 👍🏻 and yes some of these Bulldogs have a very High Metabolism especially when they’re active.

    What’s up brother… don’t let the nay sayers bother you one bit. Your doing a great service to the AB and all the other… I’m going to be careful with my words here…Mastiff, bull and terrier’s, “bull type” breeds. We have a lot of uneducated people out there. The more people do their research and learn as much history of these breeds the better. From one dog man to another. Keep up the good work!

      My bulldog uses his dew claws to holds things to chew or eat and also uses them to grab and pull down toys or playmates. I wouldn't remove them with these dogs. Especially if you are going to work them.

    What was the discussion like as a new breeder to them as far as the market? I know a lot of American Bulldog purist have kind toned down the aloofness in their dogs and sold more to family dogs. Is that upsetting for the future to see the ability of the dogs not necessarily go to waste, furthermore, be left untouched.
    I know your trying to build to a certain level of satisfaction of your dogs; do you keep said dogs internal.
    You mentioned some of the old practices they would use, what would be your approach or direction with majority of the dogs?

    • @prideofthesouthlandkennels
      @prideofthesouthlandkennels  3 года назад +6

      Not sure I quite understand the first part of the question regarding the market. Forgive me if I misunderstood but I’ll try to answer to the best of my ability. From what I’ve seen with my own eyes and heard from others is this, now keep in mind I haven’t spoken to every breeder out there but I’ve talked to several over the past year. You have your “show” breeders who are breeding for confirmation and agility, your hog hunters who only breed to keep a good hunting line going, and then you have people who are just breeding to be breeding. I have yet to come across a breeder that is breeding for the original purpose of this dog which would be a utility type animal for the farm that can guard, protect and catch when needed. What I am finding with the dogs that I have purchased from others is most of them are too drivey to naturally work a farm. They want to attack everything that moves. I have this problem with Monroe and Summitt and I believe I will have this problem with even a few of the pups out of them and Neyland. Only 2% of dogs today are bred to be working dogs to serve a purpose, that’s just the change in society. We do not absolutely need dogs the way people did 100 years ago. Dogs of today can and do still serve a purpose just not to the extent they did in the past.

    • @prideofthesouthlandkennels
      @prideofthesouthlandkennels  3 года назад +4

      Over the last year we kept 1/3 of our productions so they can be tested and worked in a farm type setting. This will be a very slow process because only time will tell how they turn out. They can’t start being really tested the way we want them to be until atleast a year old. Another thing that will slow this process down is we can only test our dogs when we absolutely need to. We can’t put dogs on hogs or other animals for the fun of it. So when the opportunity presents itself then and only then can we truly assess the dogs. Any dogs that perform the way we want them to will be kept here and bred to reproduce those traits.

    • @prideofthesouthlandkennels
      @prideofthesouthlandkennels  3 года назад +5

      We are working to get more space fenced in so that we can move into more of some livestock guardian work with larger animals other than chickens. The direction we’re working toward is an all around family farm dog that is gentle around kids and family but weary of strangers and intruders and also a dog that will protect his property, his flock, his herd but will also catch any animal that enters the property or any livestock that’s unruly. I hope I answered your question correctly.

      @@prideofthesouthlandkennels I understand, that's what I was trying to understand. I guess more of the challenges of what you want out of your dog as far as the line goes, versus what the consumers of those reaching out to you want. You have mentioned several times you would prefer to get these dogs in environments where you see them striving. You hit the money we don't use dogs as often in agriculture, hunting, catch as often as we did years ago. I have seen some breeders get for lack of better word at the moment turned off to breed a dog that is aloof of strangers and protective instincts. Begin to focus more on the esthetics breeding that out of the line. So would you say with your foundation and productions you would like to head in which of those categories?

    • @TriggaPapi24
      @TriggaPapi24 3 года назад +1

      @@prideofthesouthlandkennels ok I didn't see these responses in my initial response to you. I know of a couple guys in Katy, Texas that have gotten into hog hunting kinda introduced these dogs to baby hogs when pups were around 6 months in controlled environments, haven't checked in on them, however like I said I know it can be difficult to judge especially early on, however you mentioned that working dog and catchers true bulldog instincts is what you want I was just curious over the next several years where you plan on taking the kennel as far as the dog trait goes and which "bulldog world" your wanting to live in. I'm very fond of these dogs the look, the temperament and I know they can do a lot, however I know a mass amount of people will want alot of those features and traits but the dog won't be a working dog; they can also wind down better than other breeds. I was curious on your thought personally. You may have already answered this by saying you keep those dogs and keep developing the ones with those traits and the others can be sold, unless someone shows they want that working dog for work.

    What made you change from game bred pitbull to the American bull dog and what qualities do you see that made them better for you personally

    • @prideofthesouthlandkennels
      @prideofthesouthlandkennels  3 года назад +6

      The reputation of the breed and the community involved with the breed at the time that I owned them. There was a lot of controversy with the American Bully and Pit Bull around that time. Everyone that I knew locally that owned APBT were morons and uneducated about the breed. I couldn’t take it anymore. The American Bulldog is similar in a lot of ways as far as behavior goes to be honest, at least the standard side of the breed. To me the thing that sets the breeds apart is the community around the breed. I have had several people reach out to me that want to help with the AB’s. If I would have owned APBT’s now at the age I am I wouldn’t have gotten rid of them. I was young and inexperienced but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Still love both breeds
