RED V-Raptor X on DJI Ronin RS4 Pro: Will it Balance?

  • This video is at the request of a viewer, and it's VERY quick and dirty. My apologies for the hectic and unplanned footage. Also, technically this video shows the RS3 Pro, but the max payload is the same on both models, and actually the new RS4 Pro actually has stiffer motors, so the positive result holds for both gimbals. Cheers everybody!

      My back is fine! But my arms definitely get tired on longer takes with this setup.

    Wow that was fast! Thank you for doing that! That’s very helpful. I need to do more research on the DJI stuff I guess. But the U-shaped handle… is that part of the RS3? Before I’ve just seen the single stick handle grip that people have. I foresee using a gimbal in some tight spaces in a small room so I’m hope to minimalist the gimbal rig. Thanks again for the video!

      I mentioned it in the video. That is the Tilta advanced gimbal ring. I like using just the bottom half as shown. You will usually see it in photos with the complete ring that goes over the top as well.

      I’ve tried several. Easyrig, Stradicam, and Readyrig types of systems. At the end of the day I don’t like any of them when I’m the one operating. If I want support, I’ll put it on a jib. Otherwise for shorter takes, I prefer to hold this setup.

    Hey Nick. I tried a bunch of gimbal solutions, even the tilta float but decided on the half tilta ring like you have. Having the grips level with the camera is so key to have center of gravity at grip level rather than right a top-heavy rig. In any case I have one question, what slick looking mounting plate did you put on top of the ring for your 15mm rod for the monitor. I need that and then I think I will have my setup finally together. Minus the lidar focus which is still coming.

      @@nick_salazar sorry I mean the monitor attachment on the top left of the ring itself. It looks like you have something on the top of the ring post itself (immediately above the left handle grip on the ring) that is a plate or something that holds your 15mm rod that your SmallHD monitor attached to?

    • @nick_salazar
      @nick_salazar  2 месяца назад +1

      That’s just a NATO rail with rod clamp. Smallrig makes them. The ring has a nato clamp which grips the rail, then the rail grips the rod, and the monitor mounts to the rod using my custom Plastic Fantastic clamp which you can see at www.fzerocamera.com/plastic

      The original V-Raptor is every bit as good, and it seems like everyone is starting to offload them in favor of the new model (like I did … guilty). So maybe you’ll be able to pick one up at a good price if you look long enough :-)

    So how does one power the ring without the top half. I see you have a battery mounted to the ring and the power accessory mount but no cables between the two. If you have a battery on the camera, can that battery power the ring via a D-tap cable from the camera battery? Or do you need to directly mount a battery to the ring via a the tilta battery mount? Also curious what adapter you got there that you have the 15mm rod clamped to for the red monitor. Thanks for the help Nick!

    • @nick_salazar
      @nick_salazar  2 месяца назад +1

      The battery mount on the ring is wired directly into the gimbal inside the bottom half of the ring. There are wires inside. The top ring is wired as well and contacts via the pogo pins, but would be used as power OUT to accessories, and is not necessary for power in. I don’t have any external wires powering the gimbal. It’s the battery on the lower half of the ring.

    how come Nisi wide ones work with breakthrough mount?

    • @nick_salazar
      @nick_salazar  3 месяца назад

      Because ... math! Athenas need 25mm of clearance. The Breakthrough DFM provides 27.

    I’m wondering if there is a quick release plate, adapter or option that would make switching back-and-forth between a tripod and the gimbal super easy? I have the red quick release plate, so I’m not sure if there is an adapter for easy switching between that and the Ronan gimbal 🤔

    • @nick_salazar
      @nick_salazar  3 месяца назад

      Yes. The plates that work for Ronin gimbals are manfrotto sized dovetails. There is a small difference on the plate bottom such that the retention features aren’t identical. But they will clamp on any plate with Manfrotto standards.

    How comes you use a mount with the Nisi lens ?

    • @nick_salazar
      @nick_salazar  3 месяца назад

      Those are the PL versions of the lenses. So to use them on RF bodies requires an adapter.

      Thanks! If I were putting this on an Easyrig I’d either use a crossbar and grip the two sides, or replace the top half of the ring and grip the top. I don’t presently have an easyrig though so I can’t show you.

      They're not cameras at all. They're gimbals. And if something fits on the RS3 Pro then it will ALSO fit on the RS4 pro, as mentioned in the video description. Most people are searching about this question in relation to the RS4 Pro, which is why it's in the title. But the video is applicable to both gimbals.

    This is really cool . Why did you choose the V raptor instad an Alexa Mini LF ?

    • @nick_salazar
      @nick_salazar  4 месяца назад +1

      Great question. Several reasons. More compact rigging, integrated monitor (fewer dangling cables), lighter overall setup, compatibility with all my RF lenses, compatibility with my existing CFExpress B media, compatibility with my existing batteries, and finally, the financing RED offered at the time. The total cost for this setup is about 60% less than what the comparable Alexa Mini LF setup would have been.
